Easy to make - you need a couple of slices of buttered bread. Slightly stale white or brown is fine. Stir an egg into half a pint of milk in a mug. Lay the bread into a shallow cooking dish with some sugar and raisins on the butter between the bread. Pour the egg mix to cover, add a bit of cinnamon. Place in moderate oven for half an hour until top is a little crispy. It can be eaten cold as well as hot.

Chip Butty, definitely only made at home, a cheap and filling food made with chips from the chip shop. Try this with brown sauce or salt & vinegar. 'Spotted Dick' traditionally steamed suet pudding. Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie are pretty much the same dish, except the first is made with lamb, the second is made with beef. In the USA I have been repeatedly served Shepherd’s Pie made with beef! I love both, I also love bread and butter pudding and Spotted Dick. Nigella has a bread and butter pudding made with croissants, the after-effects of which require prolonged recuperation in hospital. You also get recipes for bread and butter pudding made with brioche or panettone - like the croissants one, IMO those are waaaay too rich: everyday plain or fruited breads are the best base.
A variant of a bread & butter pudding is a breakfast Bread & Butter Pudding. Which instead of raisins or sultanas it contains bacon, sausages and mushrooms topped with cheese and sliced tomatoes. Extra bacon slices can be laid across the top as well if desired.
Oh and there is a Lancashire speciality called butter pie, its rich shortcrust pastry with a layer of sliced potatoes, onions and a slab of butter, with multiple layers, miss that so much

In Brazil, I was introduced at a bar to Cow's tongue ( Lingua) . It is well-cooked, sprinkled with cheese and often eaten with very hot peppers! When cooked very well it can be tasty to eat and to wash down with a cold beer! Nice video Vanessa!
Hi Vanessa...I think when trying different food, it's important to consider whether what you have is a good, bad, or indifferent version! You did very well to restrict yourself to just one bite of your crumpet....albeit a big one! As an art student in the '60s we knew how to party!!! I can't just remember what my food allowance was for the day (perhaps £1.00) but whatever it was we had to use it wisely, and one way was to buy an enormous bread cake, and a portion of chips and scraps, between two of us! That meant that we had left enough for two pints of cider, and a Cornish Pasty for later, at the pub, before our evening classes.....lol Considering its simplicity B&B pudding is a brilliant last minute desert, and I never saw anyone who doesn't like it! Not too sure about using raisins, as sultanas are the way to go! If you want it to be a little more special; try using croissants, and there are some who like it with marmalade (me being one such) but my family just like it plain and simple, but with additional egg yolks, vanilla and 'Devon Custard. of which we disagree over hot or cold! I prefer it cold, and I could talk to you about food all day.....:-)
since you like crumpets try eggy crumpets. partly toast the crumpets for 5 mins of both sides then dip them in beaten eggs ( give them a good soaking) then fry them on both sides untill they go brown and crispy and serve with a dollop of hp sauce. heaven.
Great video as always. Definitely should’ve had some cheese on the crumpet, like someone else already said, Philadelphia cheese is nice, or grilled cheese. But by itself with lashings of butter on and a cup of tea is also nice. The chip butty, it looked more like fries, it has to be done with chips from the fish shop, or fried chips at home. You should try something like a Birdseye potato waffle and cheese sandwich. White bread is definitely the best food invention, because you can virtually make a sandwich out of anything, pies, pasties, anything really. ;)
Well, just to let you know, I’m a very picky eater, especially when I travel internationally, but you did such a wonderful job in describing these food dishes, that I’ll have to try them next time I travel to England. Also you have such a crisp voice and wonderful smile, you could do commercials. Thanks for sharing
Ten out of ten for the video. Always good to see a lady with a decent appetite - not just a little nibble but a good nite and s proper taste. Well done. I haven't had a chip butty for years (not as good as a bacon butty anyway) but if I had one I would not have brown or red sauce. Instead have a decent layer of butter on both slices of bread, and a splash of vinegar on the chips.
A delicious twist on bread n butter pudding is to make it savoury. Make cheese n ham sandwiches with buttered bread and a little English mustard. Cut each sandwich into 4 triangles and arrange in a dish stood up on end and overlapping.. Make the custard without sugar. Important to use cheap white sliced bread and let the custard really soak into the sandwiches before you put in the oven.
Simple dish tin of new potatoes dried in a frying pan with butter and garlic a very low heat with lid on toss a few times leave till browning then chop an onion into not so small pieces put in pan replace lid cook till the way you like your onions thats it, I suppose you can put it with whatever but if your skint do for a meal love
Bread and butter pudding is sooooo easy to cook, literally just buttered (preferably de-crusted) white bread layered in an buttered oven dish or tray, with a sprinkling of sugar in between each layer (optional added raisins or other flavourings like nutmeg/cinnamon). Then cover with milk mixed with whisked egg, just so the bread has fully been soaked, Bake for around 45 mins on 180 C (until the surface goes golden brown). Serve with cream...I love it. I guess I've probably seen it eaten with custard...but did that one have custard actually in it? Never seen that before. I don't usually do measurements lol, but I know how I like it!
It’s what’s left over from Sunday dinner ( cabbage, potato, cauliflower, broccoli etc .. they must not have gravy on )put in a bowl and put it in the fridge, take out 4 - 5 hours later. Put into a frying pan no oil, and stir and mix till slightly brown, then serve. Yummy, don’t know how it got its name
Dark bread and butter pudding does exist. But still white bread. You swap out for chocolate custard and chocolate chips alongside the raisins. Last year there was a recipe for creme egg custard floating about, I guess that would work here too.
In order to properly enjoy a crumpet, it is necessary to toast it repeatedly for short periods. That way the inside remains soft, moist and fluffy, while the outside gets crunchy. Must be served hot with lots of butter, so that it drips right through.
Not exactly a main course or dessert in the traditional style, but when I was younger, it was customary in some parts of Yorkshire, where I originate from, to eat fruit cake (eg. Christmas cake) with a slice of Wensleydale cheese on it. The contrast of sweet and savoury together is delicious.
Bread and butter pudding was always made with any stale bread that families had left. My aunt used to make a fantastic bread and butter pudding. Can I suggest steamed syrup pudding, Lancashire hotpot and Scouse for your next video
In my day and region a crumpet was called a pikelet. Although crumpet is a very old word for them. Chip Butties and Crisp Butties are commonplace. You need to try a knickerbocker glory...
Crumpets are delicious if you cover them in scrambled eggs, and some smoked ham. A couple of other things to try: piccililli, all the Swiss I've known love pickles so you might live it, and something simple toast and marmite.
How refreshing to see someone eating properly . I'm sick and tired of seeing people putting spoonfuls of food in their mouths and seeing half the food still on their spoon when they remove it . It's lovely to see a beautiful lady being ladylike .
I can't imagine ordering a chip butty at a restaurant. Maybe a random chippy to take out. Honestly they're something I make when I have some potatoes and bread to use up, just a nice kind of sandwich. When the chips are crunchy and fluffy they also have a really great texture.
Hi Vanessa, love this and all the Vids you do, so so easy to watch and enjoy, and well done on your Presentation skills, which are of course exceptionally good. Can i put a link here for something from a time gone by, sadly, it was a time when i know Great Britain, was at it`s happiest, and in a good place, this video link, shows a series of clips from our regular Saturday night tv must see programs, that everyone loved. It started here in the 70`s, and was an instant hit, it evolved over a short period of time to start including teams from Villages and Towns across the UK competing against each other, It was Called `It`s A Knockout` . . .just pure mayhem and fun, and full of rib aching laughs at what they had to endure, for the sake of winning that days competition. Later and during the mid 70`s to 80`s it went international, with a team GB representing us against teams from towns and villages across Europe, mainly Germany France, Switzerland, Italy Holland Belgium and maybe a couple of others too, it was then known as `Jeus San Frontiers` basically the International version, and oh boy did they come up with some incredible games. ruclips.net/video/eHQyylxst1U/видео.html . . . .remember this is just a highlight program that is about an hour long, so you may have to edit the funniest bits, you want to show yourself ok? I would love to bring this back to mainstream TV and give it a real 2021 up-to-date Theme. It would be a `Knockout` for sure!! Sit back, relax, and enjoy it with your partner, i promise, you will be seeing a different side to just how crazy this country and it`s people can be aswell as our friends in Europe too. Take Care . . .Chris. :)

Crisp sandwiches! used to be a staple for teenagers in the Uk. As a kid I used to have sugar sandwiches too! I am 55 so its been a few years :) Enjoyed your video. UK food is weird sometimes, but when you are brought up on it it is normal. Same with US food, or Canadian, or any other nation.
something I love is something we have on bonfire night, warm pork pie and real mushy peas, the kind you soke overnight then cook on the stove, with a dash of mint sauce or some onion gravy. Eaten out of a bowl with a spoon in front of a roaring bonfire with fireworks exploding all around the smell of wood smoke and gunpowder in the air, will forever remind me of being a kid, real comfort food.

i would have to say cottage pie as one of my fav's also a chip butty but what i've been doing lately is making sandwiches with potatoe waffles instead of bread with hot or cold fillings for a quick and easy snack
*buzzer sound* chips and fries are different, its the way they are cooked and cut that makes them different. Fries are a kind of chip, but not the other way around.

Brioche choc chip bread pudding is amazing .
A variant of a bread & butter pudding is a breakfast Bread & Butter Pudding. Which instead of raisins or sultanas it contains bacon, sausages and mushrooms topped with cheese and sliced tomatoes. Extra bacon slices can be laid across the top as well if desired.
Oh and there is a Lancashire speciality called butter pie, its rich shortcrust pastry with a layer of sliced potatoes, onions and a slab of butter, with multiple layers, miss that so much
There's a Welsh version called teisen nionod (onion cake) without the pastry.
Well done for trying them, I agreed with everything you said, my favorite was the Cottage pie. Most are war time recipes, that folks still love today.
Brioche is ideal for a bread'n'butter pudding.
Especially if you sub the raisins/currants for chocolate chips 😋
Hi have you tried black pudding? I like a good chip butty they are great 👍 another dish I like is a pie sandwich or even mashed potato on toast yum yum yum. I am so glad I found your channel it really funny well done luv❤️
Thank you Derek! I love a good Black Pudding 😍
Try sticking some black pudding in a chilli con carne, you can thank me later.
That meant that we had left enough for two pints of cider, and a Cornish Pasty for later, at the pub, before our evening classes.....lol
Considering its simplicity B&B pudding is a brilliant last minute desert, and I never saw anyone who doesn't like it!
Not too sure about using raisins, as sultanas are the way to go!
If you want it to be a little more special; try using croissants, and there are some who like it with marmalade (me being one such)
but my family just like it plain and simple, but with additional egg yolks, vanilla and 'Devon Custard. of which we disagree over hot or cold!
Spotted D with a dollop of raspberry jam on top, then drown in custard. 😁
I meant a good BITE and a proper taste. Sorry. Fat finger syndrome on the keypad!
Stale bread is what you would use for bread and butter pudding, Doris, stale.
Normally stale sliced white bread. I have had it with brioche bread and an apricot compote at the bottom of the dish and it was fantastic.
Chip butty is a good hangover cure, though it's better if it's a barm (roll) with nice thick gravy as well.
An elderly lady I knew used to take the top off her mince pie and put in a slice of cheddar
@@tinaosborne6837 A woman after my own heart, by the sound of her. 😄
In a similar vein when I was younger I used to like putting blue cheese on my digestive biscuits.
@@stevebarlow3154 yep. Cheese on digestives is a favourite snack for me too. Great minds, and all that..... 😃
Bread and butter pudding was always made with any stale bread that families had left. My aunt used to make a fantastic bread and butter pudding. Can I suggest steamed syrup pudding, Lancashire hotpot and Scouse for your next video
Try a cold Yorkshire Pudding with strawberry jam in the middle....Yummy!!
Proper Yorkshire brekkie when I was growing up or as puddin after the Sunday roast🤗
YUMM - I want to try this vanilla Pudding bread thing 🤤😂
Bread and butter pudding Bianca... If it's done right then it's light in texture and melts in the mouth.
@@colinglen4505 I prefer bread pudding my mum makes a wonderful one she soaks the dried fruit in brandy, I need a care package lol
Its pretty easy to make and lots of recipes out there
In my day and region a crumpet was called a pikelet. Although crumpet is a very old word for them.
Chip Butties and Crisp Butties are commonplace.
You need to try a knickerbocker glory...
@Chelsea Fc Well I'm northern and I guess it could be a while ago... I did say in my day...
Crumpets are delicious if you cover them in scrambled eggs, and some smoked ham.
A couple of other things to try: piccililli, all the Swiss I've known love pickles so you might live it, and something simple toast and marmite.
Crisps in the chip butty makes it so much better and fish fingers with rocket and tartare sauce butty, heaven on a plate
How refreshing to see someone eating properly . I'm sick and tired of seeing people putting spoonfuls of food in their mouths and seeing half the food still on their spoon when they remove it . It's lovely to see a beautiful lady being ladylike .
“A little bit of whipped cream never hurt anybody.” You can take the Austrian out of Austria, but...
It's always good to try new dishes :)
I can't imagine ordering a chip butty at a restaurant. Maybe a random chippy to take out. Honestly they're something I make when I have some potatoes and bread to use up, just a nice kind of sandwich. When the chips are crunchy and fluffy they also have a really great texture.
when i go to mcdonalds i put the chips in the burger and omg its amazing
Wow, why have I never thought of that?! Defo trying it when I next get McDonalds!
CRUMPET WITH HAM, POACHED EGG AND HOLLANDAISE SAUCE🤩
Take Care . . .Chris. :)
Take a medium sized loaf of unsliced bread and cut the whole top offand hollow out the centre of the loaf Heat up a tin of oxtail soup and pour into the loaf Return the hollowed out centre of the loaf Turn the whole thing a couple of times to absorb the soup and enjoy !!
Great reaction, for the chip butty you need to load it with butter so when you eat it the butter runs down your arms to the elbow, lol.
“ White bread for naughty stuff “ 😱😂😉 never thought of white bread as “ naughty ! “
something I love is something we have on bonfire night, warm pork pie and real mushy peas, the kind you soke overnight then cook on the stove, with a dash of mint sauce or some onion gravy. Eaten out of a bowl with a spoon in front of a roaring bonfire with fireworks exploding all around the smell of wood smoke and gunpowder in the air, will forever remind me of being a kid, real comfort food.
i use crumpets as a substitute for bread for cheese on toast(ed crumpets).
Add a couple of splashes of Worcester (pronounced 'wusster') sauce to the cheese.for a taste sensation
Stumbled across this through the peter kay video! Seriously underrated!!
Bread and butter pudding...usually with stale bread. A simple and delicious dish.
We also say venessa is a nice bit of crumpet 👍
In a completely respectful and non-objectifying sense of course.
i would have to say cottage pie as one of my fav's also a chip butty but what i've been doing lately is making sandwiches with potatoe waffles instead of bread with hot or cold fillings for a quick and easy snack
*buzzer sound* chips and fries are different, its the way they are cooked and cut that makes them different. Fries are a kind of chip, but not the other way around.
Treacle sponge and custard - yum!
A chip butty is something you get from the chip shop and walk up the street eating it and the cottage pie, the only thing you left was the pattern on the plate
A Chip Buttie is yummy comfort food, best enjoyed with a cup of Tea while watching Tv 😜👍
I just saw this British vid of a talk show host that reheats people's food and reserves it to them in a restaurant. Super funny and wholesome. I think you've done a vid on this host. It's a gentleman, forgot his name, but this vid reminds me of it cause in one of the episodes, he serves this lady a pie that she made, sheperds maybe. It's so funny. I'm sure you've seen it and if not have possibly reacted to it on camera?
You should try a chip butty Hull style, season the chips with chip spice, a locally developed seasoning that is slowly finding its way across the country.
Love how you try British food. Try a giant Yorkshire pudding full of stew..its so yummy 😋
Deep fried haggis is from Scotland but delicious. You should try it. Have you tried trifle? Homemade with real cream is better than from the supermarket.
Trifle I agree with but not haggis.
Try making bread & butter pudding with brioche or pannatone!
cottage pie is the ultimate comfort food, but no shop has ever made a good one.
M an s gastro pub range trust me

Is there anything this girl won't eat? When I see these women (american) holding British food like it's poison, with their faces all screwed up, I think...send in Vanessa and that'll be gone in seconds...😂😂
Bless ya, Vanessa is from Austria!
@@RichDoes.. ...I know, thats why I put American in brackets....I was referencing the 'Billy Jo tries British foods' vlogs, where yhe tiniest taste of most foods induces a face like a slapped ****!
My mum makes a chocolate and Bailey's bread and butter pudding and its AMAZING!!!
There is a variant to bread and butter pudding called bread pudding. It is completely different in look and taste being much darker. spicier and more stodgy. It is also more tray bake in appearance and for my money is much tastier and generally better all round.
I hope there is butter on that chip butty? Butter-butty, geddit? The butter melts all over the chips and even without sauce it is wonderful.
Other desserts made using (white) bread include Summer Pudding and Apple Charlotte. Spotted Dick would traditionally been made with (beef) Suet.
Try crumpets with a slice of dairylea cheese with a fried or poached on top it's pukka but toast the crumpet really well
Bread pudding my favourite bread soaked a with currents and raisins mixed with lard baked in a roasting dish let it set sprinkle with sugar cut into squares ,serve hot or cold with custard !
Baked with lard!!!!! It should be butter!!!
