Thanks so much for sharing Blake! I am always in awe of the work you post to Instagram. I am eager to try this method to get away from always ending up with "flat" eyes! Also I picked up a couple of your knives from Helvie. They're my favorites now! Much appreciated!
Sometimes it is difficult to record when you don't have any help. Check out my video on International Association of Wood Carvers for more of the details.
The tools are dockyard u -microgouges. You can pick them up from Stadtlander Woodcarving. The Pouch was bought several years back in Charlotte and is perfect for the microgouges.
I would recommend you buying Dockyard micro gouges. You can find them at several woodcarving dealers on line. I use the set that is 1.5mm to 5 mm....(5 in a set). Thanks for the feedback on the videos!
good day, just a little constructive comment. You should put the camera on the other side, over your left arm to see if it is better. Have a great day.
Hey Blake, pretty new to carving and I saw someone else mentioned the rough-out knife you used. I'm new enough I'm still trying different knives until I find "the right one". Which knife is that one? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.
Hey Mark! I usually use a 2" Helvie roughout knife (usually my signature knife) and I can do just about all roughing out and carving details with it. I have used a long line of knives from different makers (OCCT, Drake, Ralph Long, Allen Goodman, Helvie - just to name a few). I like Helvie because the bevels are flat and they glide though the wood. I hope this helps!
@@lunsfordcarvings yes sir. I've got 2 helvies on order but wait time is over 330 days! 😲 i've ordered and used a Hahn's, Drake, and i have a Mora 122 on the way but i keep going back to my original Mike Shipley 1 1/4 knife. Thanks for the response, and thanks for doing the IAWC channel also. Great info on there.
Yes, I use my thumb as a lever to push the knife. I turn the gouge and carver towards me as I feel like I have more control of the tool which helps keep you from cutting skin.....no fun!
I'm to the point now where I use a 2" blade for most everything I carve. I may use a smaller detail knife for the small chips in the eyes, but it depends on the size carving I am doing.
Hey Blake I’ve been carving for while ,this is one of the best video on faces to date .
Thanks for sharing .
Thanks Ben! Just a video to help people get started. I'm sure there are tons of different ways to do it. I appreciate the kind comments!
I agree his face tutorials are the best. Helped me out massively

Blake where did you get those carving tools in that leather pouch. Looks loke Sothern carving and leather.

You should do some more videos, really enjoyed it.
Thanks, will do!
Great video! Filming from the left side of your body next time might help us get a better view of the carving due to the way you carve.
Thanks for the tip! I'm working on my setup. Hopefully you will see gradual improvements that I am making.
Thanks again ! 👍
Absolutely!
Hi Blake I'm a new subscriber thanks for telling me about this video
Welcome!
That is one of the best demo on cutting eye that I have seen eyes are my down fall.....
Thanks so much! I apologize for the camera angle. Hopefully you were able to get some good information from the video!
Great work and video, Dave. I need to purchase micro-tools. Can you recommend a set for me? Thank you, Mark

@@benbisson2412 Thanks my friend!
Blake what size was the micro gouge you were using?
I use a 3 MM dockyard for most all of my eyes unless it is a larger piece.
@@lunsfordcarvings thank you

excelent video. one of the best I´ve seen. I follow you in instagram under woodcarvincoffee. thanks for sharing
#9 is great but what is the mm's?
3/8” #9 (I’m using an old Denny)
You might try repositioning the camera, so we can see better
I have changed my setup since this first video. Hopefully it is better now.
So I see the direction u use with knife is different than direction of gouge

Glad I found another awesome Carver to learn from on here. I follow your Instagram also under Cursiveman_Carves.
Awesome, thank you!
Great job Blake. You started with what you called a rough out knife. Is it often the only knife type you use?
