You were the first person I ever watched carving and with your help, I am now totally addicted to the craft. My pieces don't come out like yours, but I have had great satisfaction with the skills you have taught me... Thank you for your time and patience to produce such valuable content. Oh and thanks for the Hatchet tip... Worked like a charm... Easier than batonning ! LOL!
“Bob’s your uncle” sure is cool to hear that. I say it all the time and NOBODY understands it. Love it. Thank you for these videos I’ve recently started carving and your videos are a tremendous help. Cheers!
You are just awesome, I started out watching your videos and now I watch many others as well, but you're easily my favorite...every time you put something out I can't wait to watch it. Thank you for always sharing your experiences with us, no doubt you spend countless hours editing, thinking of ideas and sharing for the benefit of everyone else. Appreciative of what you do, and I am now proudly a carver for life thanks to you for giving me the confidence to start and not be afraid of it!
Have to say as I continue to make quite a few of these that your line about ' have fun with it..don't get caught up with being exact, that only you know'....are great words that have made me carry on and having fun! Thanks for that!
Doug! I find lots of your carvings are good and inspire me to give some a try. I don't follow exactly as you do them. Take my license where I can here and there. But I do credit you for really giving my that push to get me carving wood. Folks ask me if I power carve like with a dremel. I shutter and say NO. Traditional tool carving only, knives, gouges, chisels, time and effort. Most come out as I expected them too. Some have not but I call those pieces "not finished yet"! Tha ks for giving me the basics and pushing me on.I started with a flip out razor knife and a woodspirit face on a redwood walking stick from the Redwood forest out in California. Using your method it looked like something. So I bought a cheap Ukrainian carving knife and have not looked back. I find stuff to carve everywhere now but always find somwthing on hour channel. While East river South Dakota gets good amounts of cottonwood bark we over here in West River don't. So I have carrot man but no base yet to drop him into. Someday I'll score a chunk of bark from east river and finish him off. I have been doing what I saw Denis Stallings cLling a stylized Owl, I have done three now, they come out pretty cool.i usually post pics of them on my facebook page. Check them out sometime. Your a good guy Doug, you help lots of folks. Good for you! Thanks Jeff Moak in South Dakota.
I think I'll make a few of these with magnets in the back. I'm sure a hand carved refrigerator magnet will make a perfect little gift for the extended family.
With the world in the current state that it's in, it is such a relief to kick back and enjoy one of your videos, pick up some pointers and get lost in something wholesome for a change. Keep up the fantastic work Doug!
Thank you so much for your videos. I was baffled as to how to cut the wood, so showing how you split it so easily was a gift. Please keep doing your tutorials they have been so helpful.
Hi Doug, just give your carving a quick shot of matte clear after the color, then water down some brown-black paint brush on and wipe off quick, that's what I use on my decoys.
Hello sir, i just wanna say thank you for your content, it really helped me cope with my depression this pandemic. your calming voice reminds me of my father who always liked wood work, so this type of content a real dream
I think everyone wants start carving and even advanced should go to this channel. My hobby is wood carving as well, and I find this channel so helpful and relaxing.
I have no idea that I needed whittling in my life. And I have no idea how I got to this part of RUclips. But I am thankful and LOVE your videos. I'm about to buy my first set of wood and a small kit with knives and gloves and stuff. I need to make something!! And I have no creative bone in my body. I'm hoping that I get to the point where I'm willing to show people my projects.
love this and definitely going to give it a try. I couldn't help noticing the one in the corner though, the eyes were fantastic!!! any chance you could do a tutorial focusing on eyes? that's where I get hung up every time
I hope that you will do lessons and explanations for beginners about wood carving, as I have not been able to learn and would love for my teacher to be as creative as you I am an Arab girl and you are my role model in sculpture
Doug, I appreciate your work. You are one a the reasons I finally made it to start wood carving, even though this idea was brewing for a while. I do like not only your craftsmanship, but also your artistic view and agility while your work on your projects and you seem as a very pleasant person. Keep up the great work! Wishes from Ukraine!

I absolutely love your videos, and your talent as well! I'm new to whittling. I've been relief carving and power carving for about a year, but whittling is so relaxing. Thank you Doug, for sharing your wisdom. Dee Fieret North Carolina, USA.
This is it! I am going to get out the new carving knives this weekend and try my hand at carving. I've been watching Doug for more than two years with my grandbabe and it's time to just DO IT! I'll make sure I have the First Aid kit handy. Thanks Doug.
Lady bug, I started a few years ago watching Doug and for every project I averaged two deep cuts on my hand, now I average only one deep cut for every six projects, take his advise, use a anti cut glove or gloves, good luck🇬🇧
@@colinrobbins6713 The first thing I bought after some basswood was a safety glove! It saved me a couple of trips to emergency for stitches (or worse) in the first two weeks. Absolutely the best investment I’ve made for carving yet 😉👍
Love your videos. They are helping me a lot and are my go-to start new projects. I am as new as it gets. Thank you VERY much for doing this. Your conversation, instructions and talking us through it are what makes you stand apart from others. Thanks again. Tom
