I just whittled my first character with the help of you and another RUclipsr .I cut myself twice in the process but I really enjoyed making the character, hopefully the first of many.
I cut myself almost everyday when I first got started. You soon learn ways to avoid cutting yourself. A glove being the best way which I was to stubborn to use.
My dear old friend Jerry Harper once told me how to carve wild birds. He said you take a stick of wood and a knife, and cut away everything that doesn't look like a bird. I guess he was right because he had birds perched everywhere in his home. If only it were that easy. You do beautiful work, and thank you for sharing your remarkable talent.
Very nice details on this piece. I've enjoyed the video and watch how your hands and your tools works like they are dancing. Do you have time to list down and share what are the different tools you've used for each of the project? I believed it will help us newbies to get to enjoy the hobby and will also save us money from buying tools that we probably don't need. Thank you Kevin.
Thank you Alex. Really all you need is a good knife. A lot of my videos are done with just a knife. I have a few gouges but I rarely use them. I prefer just using a knife
Nice little set-up with the wood tacked onto upright log. Think I will do that as something to hold piece against always helps. My neck is fused and can't look straight down. What is an Outport character or what does that refer to?
I use it most times. It takes a lot of the strain of my hand that I hold the wood with. I call them outpost characters. I live on the island of Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada. Fishing was the main industry here for a few hundred years. There was little communities all along the coast. A lot of them could only be reached by boat. They called them outport communities. It's different now. I carve a lot of these characters now for the tourist trade
@@KevinCoates98 Thanks, that's what I figured since you mentioned using White pine from the coast of Canada. So, characters that hang around the old port towns. I visited my aunt around Acadia in Maine back in 09'. You're really far up North in Newfoundland. I'll have to try some of those. 👍

Thanks Travis. It takes lots of practice. A lot of my customers reach me through Facebook where I post photos of my work. I sell through some craft shops. I do some giveaways. Not a lot. Hi Kevin! I have been carving for 56 years. Here in Austria, I carve in either cembra pine or linden (lime/basswood). What type of pine do you use (ponderosa, white, sugar...)?

Thank you Kevin for replying so soon, I was intrigued as I have not seen anyone but yourself do it this way, it is really effective. When I was in the sports shop years ago a fish filleting knife was extremely flexible to run the blade down the bones or spine to release the flesh. What you call a filleting knife over there must be different stiffness as I could see very little flex as you were carving. Good one that you have adapted to your style. I will keep watching your videos over here in Old England. Regards from John.
john goodall I made a mistake in what I said. That knife is a boning knife for fish. The other knife I use in the more recent videos is the fillet knife. There is no flex in that one either. It is missing more than half the blade. Good luck with the carving.

Fabio Natale I live in Canada so there's a fair difference between the Canadian dollar and the US dollar. Anyway my 8"-9" characters sell for $80-$120 depending on what they are. You can send some photos of your work if you like. I would like to see them

reltcl1995 the knife was used for filleting fish once upon a time. It had a much longer blade. I cut 3”-4” off it. It makes for a real good rough out knife. I had the knife for about 30 yrs but as to where you can purchase one like it now I have no idea. Sorry I couldn’t be more help

Linda in my more recent videos I put in the description the size and type of wood I’m using. As for the knife, I’ve mentioned it dozens of times in the comments what I use. It’s a fish knife.
