    Correct me if I'm wrong but I have the impression that colleges and universities nowadays are becoming more like businesses rather than education systems. I mean, they try their best to sell by increasing their reputation, buying their names in newspaper and ranking sites, etc. to attract more students. It's not necessarily a bad thing, colleges are trying to improve to polish their names, but I wish people, especially young, disoriented people would come to colleges and universities with the intention of learning what they want and what will help them to become productive members of society in the future, not because a school is simply considered "prestigious" and "highly ranked".

      Max Weber already saw this (I think it was in his "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" 1904). He compares the (then normal)European style of education - The Mentor-Student relation with the American pragmatical "You teach me-I pay you" model. Weber gives cons and pros for both systems. Basically the American model is more cost-effective and creates more experts in less time, but at the same time it destroys the possibility of genius - I don't have the numbers but I believe that most American Nobel laureates in the past 100 years studied abroad or where from there to begin with. But at the same time USA is still the most advanced nation on Earth mostly because of it's industry and educated middle-class.

      They also increase their ranking by spending the tuition we pay on things like gardens and more swimming pools. I got my degree at SMU. Don't get me wrong, it's a great school because they pay their professors well. But they also spend a fortune on landscaping alone and that degree cost me an arm and a leg. I'm basically paying the equivalent of a second car payment every month just for my bachelors degree. I pick some of their flowers ever now and again. Hell, I'm paying for them.

    • @phinguyen97
      @phinguyen97 7 лет назад +12

      yes, that! thank you for mentioning it. instead of spending our money for improving the quality of classes, they spend a big amount on useless things. my university increases 10% of our tuition every year and yet they spend it on a stupid parking lot security system that doesn't even work! who the hell knows where the rest of that money goes to!

    I went to a top ranked university because I believe it mattered. Honestly, I would've probably been happier at a lower ranked school and I still would have gotten a decent degree. This ranking ridiculousness really shows how elitist the education system can be! It is a popularity contest!

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 7 лет назад +10

      WrinkleinTime42 when you go to a top ranked universities, you don't just go there for the education, but for the connection you'll make while you're there.

    • @wrinkleintime4257
      @wrinkleintime4257 7 лет назад +21

      Michael Panggabean you can make connections anywhere really. In my experience, it's more competitive, the school is huge and it's hard to be viewed as an individual, it's near impossible getting classes you need or talking to advisors, it's very beaureucratic, there's very little support because the school is so large, and most importantly because of the fancy name, it's so expensive!! I love studying at this school but I definitely understand that it's not for everyone. If you can go to one, great! But if not, a quality education can be acquired anywhere! What matters is you pursuing higher education. Sure some have better opportunities than others, but what matters is the most is how determined the individual is to pursue what they want to pursue. With enough dedication, one can be successful no matter where they studied! Most people don't attend top schools, so it's stupid to have such a narrow view of what a "quality education" looks like. And making connections or not is very individual- you can't always depend on the school for that :')

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 7 лет назад +2

      WrinkleinTime42 again, I'm not saying that you can't make connections outside of top universities, but it helps. For example, if you graduated for a university that's famous within the field that you're interested in, you will find many professionals in that field graduated from your uni. They will find you more recruitable just because you graduated from the same uni as them, because people generally love something that's in common. You can still get accepted at that company even if you don't graduated from the uni as him, but if there are 2 similar candidates but one graduated from his Alma mater and the other from a different uni, it's obvious who he'll pick.

      My prof could have potentially gone to a New York university, but because the costs were so unreasonably high, he decided to come to Canada since it was cheaper. Really intelligent guy, and he's still finding lots of ways to remain relevant today (and it looks like he still plans to). I'm always intimidated by going out into the real world, but in getting career advice from him, I really just got the impression that as long as you're focused on what you want and find all the ways to do it (and being sensitive with what you have, who you're connected to), you'll be just as set as the others.
      Really, it should be about how you present yourself... In time, people will figure out whether that presentation of yourself is in line or just totally off base, anyway.

      Lots of money is spent on recruiting and marketing by universities. Many people think community colleges are sub prime, when they are not. If you want to enter a profession that does not require a bachelor's degree or higher, then going to a community college is best. Even if a bachelor's degree or higher is required, getting your first two years out of the way at a community college makes the most sense (or cents). It breaks my heart to see so many parents of middle and high schoolers set on universities, and willing to go into so much debt for a bachelor's degree or higher that has little to no return on investment (ROI). Sadly, I see this getting worse, since no higher ed institution is incentivized to keep tuition the same, now that the Biden administration has awarded student loan forgiveness.

      It all depends on what you are majoring in. I am a physics teacher and value my physics degree as well as my postgraduate teaching credential. But there are definitely many useless degrees out there, sometimes a lucrative 2 year vocational degree proves far more useful than a bachelor's degree in something useless.

I always felt my advantage until I studied vector calculus, then I wished I was young again. My ex-wife taught herself how to value houses by going out to value houses for fun. With no college, she became the assessor's valuation defender in county board hearings. Inspiration is the key to anything, and tuition is very inspirational. I guess its "follow your bliss." University rankings are done for unis all around the world. The Shanghai ranking just came out for this year and despite being slightly less garbage than other rankings, it is still a pile of horseshit. These rankings do very little in terms of judging the quality of education. The Shanghai ranking, in order to judge quality of education, looks at the alumni having earned Nobel prizes and Fields medals (counts for 10% of the score). That is not very useful for students and employers wanting to know the quality of an institution, yet most people still seem to trust the Shanghai ranking.

    The university I went to eliminated the deans since it only had three and they were largely a title and not a real job for the previous couple decades after the university decided to make the chancellor more easily accessible to students. After about 5 years the school's ranking dropped a few spots even though it was getting better and looked into why. They found out some ranking systems randomly ask deans if they have heard of a particular university and one way to boost that is to have deans who go to conferences for deans so they brought back all three of the dean positions and their official job is basically acting as PR to other universities and companies to get the name out there. The deans are rarely on campus and the actual hierarchy didn't really change they were just inserted alongside existing positions.

    • @missireason8998

      Agree. Presidents of universities and colleges are just highly paid bobble heads. When it comes to the day-to-day, the provost matters more. It saddens me to see so many deans at a school. It has gotten worse, as more schools embrace the virtue-signal programs. Each program comes with its own Dean.

    Would it be possible to do a “Ruins Everything” episode about the truth regarding the acceptance to Ivy League Schools - it has been a problem for low income people to get into these exclusive schools for years, but it seems that if one is wealthy or well-connected it is almost never a problem to get into a college like Harvard, Cornell, Brown, Duke, Princeton, or other higher end universities. I was wondering if you would like to do an episode about elite and exclusive schools and how factors like wealth and connections really make the difference, not necessarily how smart a student is.

    The international ranking is very important, and they invest a lot of time and money to do better. That's a good thing for students. My school was quick to drop under performing professors, invested in new systems and facilities. We jumped in the ranking last year because of completely overhauling the lab systems, a few years back.
    The ranking system generally works and makes it better for students, soon we will be getting new buildings and increased work spaces. I've already passed out and won't avail those facilities, I know I can visit almost every capital city and find an office, where talks and discussions are help regularly for Alumni.

    There's one ranking I like: Call it the ADJUSTED ROI:
    ... Step 1: Take the median income of a graduate of said school for their 5th year after graduation. Step 2: Subtract from this what you would have made the same year anyway ... Subtract the current median income of a student when they started school if already at the peak of their career without the effect of the degree (usually only applies to grad schools and adult degree programs), otherwise subtract about 75k, the estimated median income of someone like a lead first line management level skilled tradesman (supervisory level electrician for example), car dealership general manager, police detective / police chief / fire chief / degree-less senior government administrator, degree-less network engineer, auctioneer, upper middle performing realtor, small business owner, etc, ... the jobs and pay grade that someone who made the cut to get in a good state university but decided against college would usually end up with by default about 10 years after graduating from high school (about the same age as someone who finished college about 5 years ago). Step 3: Multiply that number by 10 (this component of the index is the median 10 year salary difference attributable to going to that school. Lastly, divide that total gain by the total cost of attendance which is the sum of all tuition you paid, books, interest on student loans, PLUS foregone income from not working an associate level / starter job for 5 years; Go with the greater of 45k OR the median income of a student before they started school at said school). This is the ADJUSTED ROI. That ranking tells you what an 'average' education at that school is WORTH. If this number is 0 or negative, the 'university' is a diploma mill (nearly all public 'universities' come out to be diploma mills). It brings to light, the sad reality that the only universities that actually are universities are the original ones (Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, etc and maybe like 5 public universities that marginally make the cut). Those of us who couldn't afford to go to one or live in a state that doesn't have a public school that is a real university, we got $100,000 in debt for not.... Unless you became a surgeon or a neurologist or a VP of a decent company.

      You will go far. CCs provide the most return on your investment. For example, many RNs do not realize until it is too late, but the pay is the same with an ADN as it is with a BSN. Hospitals and clinics pay per job duties, not education. New Nurse Grads learn that having that BSN from a top ranked university or university with a good football team does not warrant a higher salary. The BSN and MSN only come in handy when you want to be in management, teaching, or advanced practice i.e.: nurse anesthetist. Same thing in the tech world. I have seen recent CC grads with an Associate's degree in Information Sciences, and a certificate in cyber security be immediately hired in the private/govt. sectors making a minimum of 60k. I am going to piss off some virtuous people, but, this is what I have seen, graduates from universities with degrees in gender studies, and theatre, live in their parents' garages, and work at Target, with a huge ball and chain on their leg called student loans. I do not feel sorry for their position, I feel sorry they put themselves in that position. Parents need to be more assertive on this, IMO.

    My high school does this, they pretended to support my robotics team by hiring a robotics "teacher" who he himself told me he has no engineering experience and only has carpentry contracting experience. In fact he told I probably know more about robotics than he does. My school is rude to my team and corrupt, they take money "left over" from team's finances and forced my team to go to a liberal arts high school to build and they don't even give us a dollar. You'd think that once we got a sponsorship from nasa they'd support us more but nope, they tried to take possession of our robot (we needed for some parts) and tried to take our awards for their display. Instead we gave the duplicates we were given of some of our awards to the mayor since he helped us and put the others at the liberal arts school since they helped us and still do. Sadly well probably never be allowed to build at my school and will probably never be allowed to even wear our medals during graduation.

      Tucson Jim I think Adam is mainly focusing on US news national university ranking as he started we a guy picking up a us news ranking book and subsequently analyzed us news' ranking criteria. He did not mention any other rankings being crooked though. Moreover when I was applying for college us news was the ranking that the majority of people base their judgements on. I compare us news to other rankings as an act of agreeing with Adams video. I'm not saying that every other rankings are right or not crooked, just that ucb does well on every other rankings but not us news seems odd.

      Yeah, internationnal rankings are okay, they don't reflect everything but give a good overview.

  • @petelee2477
    @petelee2477 4 года назад +1

    Why don't they just place the importance of graduates that have jobs and the employers who are satisfied with the training that the graduate has. If only 10% of graduates at one school has a job in their field and employers who did hire a graduate form this University gave them a low score then that's a good indication that it's not a good school.
    If another school has 90% of graduates with a career in the field that they majored in(bonus points if another 50% of students didn't even graduate and still have a career in their field of study) and employers all said that the graduates have had adequate training then that means it's a very good school.
    That's literally the ONLY thing that matters yet that factor is completely overlooked when regarding the quality and prestige of a school.
