And that isn't all either. A tech channel, LinusTechTips, had actually bought an Apple product for review, but when they made a slip-up while investigating the hardware specs, they went to Apple to fix it, only to be denied because none their employees were trained, and the people capable of fixing it would have their licenses for Apple repair revoked if they tried to fix the product.
Apple tries everything in their power to sell you more devices. Multiple employees have stated that they got PUNISHED for mentioning a repair service over a new device.
If you mostly print black and white douments, get a black and white laser for about $100-200. Toner has a much lower cost per page, and unlike ink it doesn't dry up when you don't use it. You spend a little more on the printer itself, but you save money on the cost of consumables. I've bought third party toner high yied cartridges for about $8 and they last me years. 1:45 it goes even further than that, if you take 2 fully functional iPhones that are identical and swap certain parts of them they will both lock you out and not allow you to use them. The chip that checks for this is called the T-2 chip and the device won't function without it. It was made exclusively for this purpose but Apple added functionality that is crucial for the phone to work in it so that you can't remove it. The T-2 chip is also in some iPads and I think MacBooks, and either way it's becoming their standard.

This is a legitimate issue that has been plaguing the tech industry for years, even when it comes to Android, HTC was the only one that allowed you to root your phone, though you did still give up your warranty. The majority of tech companies like Nintendo, Xbox, and some others will also void warranties if you have third parties make any changes, some changes will result in a ban on the system itself. Cheating is understandable, but it's not always for cheating, and I think that it should be banned from the specific game rather than the entire network. I worked for AT&T, Xbox, Paypal, and have been doing computer repair for 12 years. The same goes for John Deere tractors, farmers even rose up because of that. People need to be more vocal.
The talk about "cheating" and "piracy" are just a surface level excuse. The primary reason is control, and ensuring that they stop resales, stop people from repairing the machines, can re-release anything.
I agree with every word you said, but I also understand why manufacturers would void your warranty. If you don't know what you are doing you can brick your device, and they will have to pay to fix or replace it. It's easier to not kill your device today, since there is more literature on rooting, and the technology in phones have gotten better.
@@deoxal7947 when it comes to software, such as bricking your device, that really doesn't cost any money. I mean aside from paying the employees their wage, which they were already getting paid anyways. But software is where we should honestly be more lenient. I could understand that this was on a hardware level, where someone replaced their screen, or attempted, and actually ended up damaging their phone more and cause additional damage the Apple for example would have to fix themselves as well as cover the cost of the additional Hardware.
@@ReaganRuinedEverything I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. If you were to corrupt your bootloader and you couldn't fix it yourself, you would be inclined to bring bit to the retailer or manufacturer. Ya, the employees are getting paid the same, but if they have to pay their employees to fix your mistake then that's labor/capital that could be put to better use elsewhere. And there are people who are technically proficient and also stupid. I saw a guy on Reddit that deleted some AMD drivers that were included with his laptop. He ended up with a machine that would not boot. If it was a phone he wouldn't have been able to do that without rooting first. Where do you think he will go for his software issue if Reddit can't help him?

No issue when my net is down or Neflix. It also helps keep the pre-owned market going for Games & Movies! If it's ONLY a digital market... there will no such thing as second-hand.. which is what companies want and they will be able to dictate the prices they want with no pre-owned (or physical media) as competition. Companies spend a lot of money to market it to us that Digital movies & games are "better" but all it does for them is increase profits. I'm going to be quite sad when companies like Steam, PS Store, Xbox Live have no physical competition... no lending a game to a friend to try, no picking up a cool pre-owned game for cheap on the way home from work, No finding a rare game... if a company pulls a game from the digital Store (eg Silent Hill PT).. it's simply gone (only a lucky few have it tied to their PS account and only one that PS console!) Apple, Google & Amazon (digital) Stores Don't have the same quality as physical media, you can not sell your old movies or buy pre-owned ones either... you will be stuck paying what ever those companies want, with greedy share holders over time that will just get more & more expensive as those big 3 eat up the smaller competition & physical media. I'm not really against digital per-se, I more recently have jumped on Netflix to get shows that I can NOT watch anywhere else, I am just really against greedy companies bending the consumer to their will. I know their are benefits to digital only... but would it not be better if we didn't loose things we already have? If a brand new car came out... it get 200mils per gallon of fuel (50km per litre roughly), it could seat 5 people but it only had one tiny kid size door at the back, so small that plus sized people could not fit through and you HAVE to get the vehicle serviced that that car makes work shop.... oh wait, they are already doing the later on e... Only thing the common person can do is Vote with your wallet - companies want you to buy on impulse & hate the smart educated shoppers. Australia only has 1 dedicated Movie & Music shop company left (Sanity.com.au) and it's major competition (JB HiFi) which also does TV's, Steroes and such.. the times are chaging and not for the better, not like this. If we are going Digital - we need to preserve the right to sell our purchases, choose the price we wish to sell it for & not have companies take a cut from that TL:DR - Amazon,Apple &Steam are down right evil... Google & Disney are also bad, but not evil... not yet at least..
The fight for repairing our devices kinda reminds me of DreamWorks' Robots, where the main corporate villain wanted to sell the robots to get expensive upgrades, that very few of the robot characters could afford, instead of repairing them with spare parts. This is why I scoff whenever people tell me they go "all digital" for gaming. Congrats, you saved a shelves worth of space and the seconds of time it takes to switch discs and now you don't even own the thing you paid $60 for.
RhynoHorne well, congrats you own a disc with a game you’ll probably never touch again after you finished it. I’m aware that in theory my games in Steam, etc. could be gone if they ever shut down. But that’s not really a concern, I don’t gain anything from paying extra to have the DVD sitting around for the offchance of wanting to play the game, after the digital Plattform shut down. I pay to play the game, not to have it sitting around collecting dust. Now, this could be different for other people and that’s fine. But don’t think whoever goes „all digital“ doesn’t know what means.
Actually you're probably better off with GOG than physical media - physical media often has copy protection on it, and that disc has a lifespan of maybe ten years...and is nigh-on impossible to copy and is pretty much guaranteed to install very nasty DRM crap that is better classified as 'malware' into your system. Some nice trash code running in ring-0 to give you that authentic blue screen feeling! With a GOG download, you can move it from disc to disc as they age, or store them on a USB hard drive or such. DRM free!
Situational irony requires that reality contradicts expectations. Confiscating 1984 would only fall in that category if we expected a book about confiscating books to not be confiscated. Still, the parallelism is too strong to simply call an analogy. It’s a bit of a gray area, if you ask me. I think there’s less harm done by calling it ironic.
Ironic how we live in a society where fixing technology causes it to break, *what a time to be alive* Guys, please be knowledgeable and know the workarounds, so your tech stays working and you don't get ripped off! This is A LOT like pirated computer programs, where the corporations don't want to get ripped off so piracy detection does everything in its power to make the program not work, such as checking for altered files and connecting to the internet. But I would have NEVER thought that these greedy corporations would apply the same countermeasures to the hardware itself!
Planned obsolescence has pros and cons. But it is arguably mostly cons for consumers. One pro that isn't only applicable to either consumers or companies, is how products often become more efficient. Washing machines before, could be repaired and run for decades, now they last perhaps 5 years or so? But a newer washing machine is usually always more efficient than an older ones, either by using less electricity and/or water. But that positive is invalid if replacing the machine on average occurs before it has succeeded to significantly outweigh the negatives as a whole (like waste, energy for making and recycling it, transport etc)! But again, planned obsolescence isn't needed for people to use more efficient products! You touch other topics as well, but many of them pertain to Planned obsolescence right?

It is, I'm spending $40 more on ink because it has to be HP
If you mostly print black and white douments, get a black and white laser for about $100-200. Toner has a much lower cost per page, and unlike ink it doesn't dry up when you don't use it.
@@TehKorwinMikke Exactly. And you know what's even worse? Fanboyism of the userbase towards these crooks.

Companies spend a lot of money to market it to us that Digital movies & games are "better" but all it does for them is increase profits.
I'm going to be quite sad when companies like Steam, PS Store, Xbox Live have no physical competition... no lending a game to a friend to try, no picking up a cool pre-owned game for cheap on the way home from work, No finding a rare game... if a company pulls a game from the digital Store (eg Silent Hill PT).. it's simply gone (only a lucky few have it tied to their PS account and only one that PS console!)
Apple, Google & Amazon (digital) Stores Don't have the same quality as physical media, you can not sell your old movies or buy pre-owned ones either... you will be stuck paying what ever those companies want, with greedy share holders over time that will just get more & more expensive as those big 3 eat up the smaller competition & physical media.

You don't own the software on the discs either, only the disc itself.
RhynoHorne well, congrats you own a disc with a game you’ll probably never touch again after you finished it. I’m aware that in theory my games in Steam, etc. could be gone if they ever shut down. I pay to play the game, not to have it sitting around collecting dust. Now, this could be different for other people and that’s fine. But don’t think whoever goes „all digital“ doesn’t know what means.
Digital is cheaper even if you factor in reselling disks, also, gl getting disks for every game on pc lol
Actually you're probably better off with GOG than physical media - physical media often has copy protection on it, and that disc has a lifespan of maybe ten years...and is nigh-on impossible to copy and is pretty much guaranteed to install very nasty DRM crap that is better classified as 'malware' into your system.
