That cinema building is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It's such a shame to lose something like that. I hope a savvy investor buys it and turns it into something grand to preserve it.
I remember coming to Siam Square as a kid. It was a big and popular shopping destination in Bangkok. One of my fondest memories here was my parents taking us to a Sukiyaki restaurant. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.
wow it's crowded and looks great market - super connecting bridge and loving this street view - so interesting & appreciated your efforts - thumbs up :)
Does anybody know what they are doing with the Lido cinema and its exceptional architecture that is so iconic to the Siam Square area now? I hope they will acknowledge its beautiful and preserve the building!
My child has to walk through that street most days to go to school. The school will open next week. (Edited) lucky me! the event is only on 29th. Otherwise, she will do a lot of shopping !! ;-)
scala is somewhat related to love of siam film? sadly, old cinemas have no place in our modern set-up, people normally go to malls- a one stop place to watch movies. i hope the investors of that historic cinema will apply adaptive reuse and not totally demolish the whole building.
21:50 asks: "and...How can you get there???...How?........" resort: "it's only you have got to take a just a little over 10 miles swim from the inland to the island, and which that hopefully you don't get taken away by sharks. If you've book the Premium Suite room, we would already have in the package free goggles rental for our guests ready for you to put on on the way you swim there. And on the way back, you would also swim back as the same, unless you decide to live on the island for the rest of your life which we are not liable for any losses nor causes." (..then look back down to the phone and act like continuing playing the phone... acting like the customer wasn't really into anything.....) 22:00 resort: "about 45 minutes". (Meant that if you don't make it to the resort within 45 minutes, sharks will be beginning to start coming for ya).
There used to be 3 cinemas on this block, The Siam, The Lido, and Scala, of which Scala was the nicest. One screen each of course, this was before multiscreen cineplex was a thing. Around the mid-70's the Thai government in its wisdom decided to imposed huge taxes on foreign movies, perhaps thinking that Thai cinemas would flourish without the competition. What happened was without competition the quality of Thai movies plummeted, and people just stopped going to the movies which resulted in many cinemas closing. In fact none of the old Bangkok cinemas survived, all the ones that are operating now are new multiplexes.
the luckiest people now are all in Thailand!
@Rak Siam I’m from Singapore.
Lido Siam Scala are the cenema that me and my girl friend went to see the movies in 50 years ago.
Is there Chula Fest this year 2022?
