  • Scientific team lead Rod Stewart gives us his last update on La Soufrière before returning to Montserrat. He also compares his time in St. Vincent with other volcanoes he has monitored.

Very interesting to learn more about the seismic monitoring operations the SRC/MVO team has set up. How many stations? What does seismicity look like? And fascinating to hear about Rod’s experiences on Rabaul. 36 hours from unrest to the city being destroyed is an experience few volcanologists face. it reminds me of okmok volcano in alaska in july 2008 which had only 3 or 4 hours of precusory seismicity, but fortunately nobody lived in that caldera. fortunately, those examples are rare. the people of st. vincent are in good hands.

Mr Stewart is absolutely right those roads are not conducive to rapid evacuation. If there is a sudden eruption people will be stuck in the area and the sea route will be much more efficient if they can mobilize the Grenadines ferries in a hurry.
