- Today’s feature is the story of a classic hip hop duo of producer and MC that are regarded by many as the greatest duo of all time, and the best representation of what hip hop to its core was at the foundation, talented artist fighting for freedom of creative expression that connects to the masses through sound, and without borders around it to control how its received. For the following reasons they didn’t become household names on the charts, selling the most records or marketed to the masses, grew distant out of frustration mostly on Guru’s part with eventually being controlled by the same labels that threaten the freedom of urban creativity on a daily basis he fought against, and later parted ways on unceremonious terms being estranged from each other for the last 7 years of Guru’s life. Guru would pass away in 2010, creating even more controversy after a letter was released that apparently showed his non desire to reconcile with Premier posthumously, as he hasn’t in the later parts of his life. They released 4 albums in that span, only their “Moment of Truth” album going at least gold and charting top 10 in the country. As you could imagine a group like Gang Starr should recognized by the masses who love hip hop, but for these reasons they never reached Mass Appeal like hoped and suffered a tragic ending. Gang Starr stunted growth?? huh??? They overachieved without sacrificing their sound. Gang Starr came out in 1989 and finally went gold 9 years later with their best album in Moment of Truth. They were never going to sell millions of records. They did more than what we thought they would do. Guru went on to do the Jazzmatazz series that sold a modest amount of albums, they did world tours, 2nd hip hop artists ever to appear on tonight show(Black Sheep was the first), and Primo produced on many multiplatinum albums. Gang Starr overachieved. There was nothing about their growth stunted. They achieved the impossible. Sold records and got love from mainstream artists while not sacrificing their sound through 6 studio albums.

Nah this one is too touchy for me. Gangstarr is hands down one of the most important acts in hip hop history. Those songs they made were highly emulated. They never made a truly terrible album. Their best album was Moment of Truth and I did love The Ownerz.

Sorry, but Gang Starr was never stunted in growth as they never aspired to be superstars in the first place. They carved their own lane, stayed true to their sound, and dropped multiple classic albums- two of which went gold with minimal radio airplay. Their objective was always to make good music which they succeeded in ten fold while maintaining their integrity.

I usually dont leave comments, but for a group like GangStarr to be on an episode of stunted growth is bugged the fuck out. They did everything right in hip hop as a duo as a group. Ninjas dropped classics (at least 2), went gold. They both did they thing solo. Primo almost 60 and still locked in. What more do you want???? How is Gang Starr stunted????

I guess because they aren't multi platinum, heavy air play, everyone knows, etc. They were underground, not commercial, and were at the height of the game.
I think he just needs a random topic of interest at this point to continue the Stunted Growth Series considering the fact that he has named rappers that already achieved success in their moment and have nothing else to prove.

I was a huge fan of Gangstarr. I'm a hip hop head and I love jazz and they fused them together and I thought that was so dope. DWYCK and Ex To The Next were songs I had on repeat. Premier's beats were unmatched and Guru was ahead of his time. Rest Easy Guru 💔

Gangstarr along Eric B./Rakim, Pete Rock/C.L. Smooth, Dr. Dre/Snoop, Mobb Deep etc. represented the other side of two-element Hip-Hop which is Mc-ing and Dj-ing from the own mind, ya know.
Your comment made me think about the similarities between GangStarr and Pete Rock and CL Smooth. Both Guru and CL had the same problem. Both men were angry that they were not getting the same results and respect as many of their peers and suffered from having their partners getting bigger than them and doing outside production more successfully for other rappers. Unfortunately, the Jazz influenced monotone voices of Guru & CL Smooth didn’t resonate big enough with hip hop fans. The fact that Premiere and Pete Rock were bigger than their emcees caused major problems as is well documented now.
Gangstar stunted growth , will go down in youtube history as one of the biggest , most far fetched , off point reaches . Ever attempted on a video to create content.

While they may not have had the success of some of their peers on billboards, and radio spins and all that, their success is in the streets where real hip hop will always be. Real heads will always respect them, and that respect is something they won’t compromise .

Gangstarr never went mainstream, because they didn't play themselves to have mass appeal. Also their content was intelligent/street Hip Hop, many wanted simple ignorant shit. Also Guru's monotone style was not for everyone. They helped create a subgenre in Boom Bap, so they didn't switch up and follow trends over their 14 years as a group. Regardless of lack of mainstream success, they had multiple classic albums and still have a major influence on underground hip hop and popular rap artists today.

Love Gang Starr. Got almost all of their albums on CD. Kinda sucks that they didn't get the success they deserved but those who know about them def recognize their talent and give them the props and respect that they deserve. Amazing duo with a top tier discography. Gang Starr, one of the best yet!

I liked Deathrow Records yet I was never a fan of Master P or No Limit records music yet I respect their hustle for being a successful label during a very competitive decade in Hip-Hop. Guru my top 5 rapper of all time. He up there with nas, rakim, icecube, and pac. They are definitely the best producer and rapper duo ever created to my knowledge. They were perfect for each other creatively with the art of music.
It is disrespect to frame them like this just to make it fit within your series. They have multiple songs with hundreds of millions of streams on Spotify alone. Stunted growth? Nope! After a slow building career, they accomplished their goals with the Moment of Truth album getting more recognition, and did it all by sticking to their sound through the shiny suit era, and paving the way for underground and purist hip hop of all forms. The music still plays everywhere today.

Gang Starr was n still is one of my favorite hip hop groups of all time. Premier's superior production n Guru's rhymes were a perfect match. 2 out of town dudes who influenced the NY hip hop sound during the 90s. Shoutout to Preemo n rest eternally in peace to Guru!

Yeah, I've been requesting for Gang Starr to be on Stunted Growth for maybe years, but at least over a year. And I was shocked that it finally happened. But I just wish the host could have went a little bit harder on Gang Starr.

As a white Swedish boy growing up in the 90s this was one of the first hip hop acts I discovered. Their influence was huge to say the least.

Premo is one of those beatmakers that I stop what I am doing to listen to a track he produced. And I feel Guru's Jazzmatazz series was underrated too. Hate that his name has been forgotten among the legends.
It's sad how things ended they had a lot of potential but just like the Bo$$ the era they came out in was very limiting from the late '80s when I first started listening to them all the way to the early '00s when they broke up GangStarr have one of the best catalogs in hip-hop history no wack songs or albums they always came up with something unique on each album R.I.P.
