I had this album as a teen. Used to jam it all the time (usually with Headphones), and my mom decided to "Listen to my music" ... find a "Connection" ... to her "drifting" son. She said (among all my music) "Nirvana wasn't bad ... Pollyanna was pretty cool." "WOW. ... I never knew you would be OK with 'that' mom ... " 😀
Actually, no. While Polly was a genius song that tied to Gerald Friend who kidnapped and raped a 14 year old girl, most of his songs didn't have the deeper meaning that people credited them for. Kurt had admitted that he never put a lot of thought into his lyrics and that it was the fans that put meaning in them that actually never existed. They [the lyrics] were pretty much thrown in there in Nirvana's first few albums. One of the first songs he actually put deeper thought into, according to Kurt, was Scentless Apprentice. I am trying to find the interview where he said that, but it may take me some time because it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but I guarantee you he said that.
It's upsetting when people call nirvana a t-shirt brand. There's so much good music and people only ever hear smells like teen spirit. Don't get me wrong, smells like teen spirit is a banger, I'm saying there's soooo many other awesome songs.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was the best & worst thing that happened to Nirvana. They were such a great band but that song and video catapulted them into superstardom and Kurt hated everything that came with it. My favorite record of theirs is Incesticide. Of course it barely beats out Bleach and In Utero in my mind but they were all great really. I wish Kurt would've done work with Bowie. I wish they would've finished their unreleased stuff. I wish they would've been around longer.

He was also a survivor of childhood SA that went on for years. I think that’s an important piece to understanding who he was. But, yes! He was vehemently anti-rape, anti-misogyny, anti-racism, anti-capitalism…just the best.
I was 17 when Cobain killed himself and it had a deep impact on me, to this day. Kurt's music was messy, and this is what made it so perfect. Nirvana's songs lacked the polished corporate grooming that bands like Nickleback or Creed were rife with. There was heart in his screams, they weren't just for effect. I truly connected with Nirvana, at a time when I was an outcast and his music decried the norms of popular culture. Cobain is still missed.

I think you just kinda have to know what is going on in Kurt's life at the time, because he was a drug addict, & so were people around him, & he uses references to some of that. The album cover, (just my own opinion/p.o.v.) is showing like, humans are already programmed from birth to chase the almighty dollar. Corporate greed, & greed in general. More money=more power, & more freedom. And our evolution has been so slow, that even if we don't care about wealth & riches, we're forced into having to work for, fight, steal, & kill for that money. Nirvana had great tracks on all of their albums. Nevermind is one of the greatest albums of all time. The other album of theirs that I played a gazillion times over the years was their MTV unplugged album. That one is definitely also worth a full album review. Next, I would say Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten is an absolute classic without a bad track that warrants a full album review too. It’s amazing and stands the test of time. It too will give you chills.

You know how, when you read a book in a literature class, you first learn about the author’s life, the themes they cared about, the culture & historic events of the time period? music is the same way, right? 2Pac speaks to issues he & the community faced in the 90s. Bob Dylan spoke on issues in the 60s. And Kurt wrote about things that were important to him in the late 80s/early 90s. Everything had meaning, and the meaning was the most important part. Like, in In Bloom, right? There’s the chorus “he likes all our pretty songs, and he likes to sing along, and he likes to shoot his gun, but he knows not what it means, knows not what it means when I say” - he’s criticizing people for listening and grooving to the sound without absorbing and relating to the central point he’s trying to get across. I can’t express just how significant Nirvana was to my generation. They -- Kurt, specifically - didn’t just completely shift the music that we were able to have access to, but, more importantly, they shifted culture. They shifted how we saw things. You should check out Beck’s Mellow Gold album. It came out right around the time Kurt died. It’s kind of like junkyard hip-hop and indie blues acoustic guitars all rolled into one, with hilarious lyrics. I think it’s a good idea for an album reaction.

I’m sure you’re already familiar with Nirvana’s two time Rock Hall of Fame drummer. Their impact on our lives cannot be measured. Lithium is my favorite Song of them and basically, its about a man living with bipolar disorder. Thats why the chorus is super energetic and the rest is a bit more sad and slow, also lithium is often prescribed against this illness. And the friends in hus head are just hallucibations, and he says "im not gonna crack" all the time to prove he s strong enough to live with it. ( this is just my Interpretation, also excuse my english) And the thing with nirvana is you have to hear the songs often to really understand the lyrics same thing with polly, didnt understood it at First too
I honestly had a really similar experience with this album. I was really into the Beatles in high school, like _really_ into them, but then at some point I found an old homemade rip of this CD and put it on out of curiosity, and in a single moment it was like I realized that there was music that I _actually liked._ I don't think I've listened to the Beatles on purpose since then.

"Polly" Is a severely serious song about a true story of a girl that was kidnapped and raped and escaped by outsmarting their assaulter. "Territorial Pissing's" is reminding you they are Punk AS Fuck. "Drain You" was actually a love song with a Sonic Youth midsection and Kurt's admitted favorite. Also my exes and my song. i recommend looking up the lyrics next time you listen to a song/album. these lyrics (especially polly) do have meanings but mostly said as metaphors which is why they can sound like it’s some random words
If you heard it elsewhere, someone stole it from here. Kurt could write a simple-sounding but genius hook/melody like nobody else. Really underrated guitar player too, sounding that 'rough' while drawing the ear to something in one listen is no small feat. Never been another voice like this either; the baby is just an album cover, observation on the music business and treatment of artists if it meant anything. Got the record banned in Walmart etc until they made an alternative/edited cover for the record.
There are LOTS of good albums. Even by smaller bands. The reason why you previously said that if you consider a good album at 3 songs is bc they probably marketed those 3 to be the single or main tracks of the album. I honestly go the opposite direction. If the rest of the songs are better than the singles, then its a great album. I'm glad you are expanding your horizons on music. I kill you, I’m not gonna crack.“ Like, if you’ve gotten to the pint where you’re literally murdering the person you’re claiming to love, you’ve *already* cracked. The first time you listened to that song, you thought Cobain was singing, “I’m not gonna cap.” Glad to see that, this time, you heard the lyrics correctly. “Polly” This song has lots of meaning. It’s an anti-rape song narrated from the voice of a man who has abducted a woman. She tricks him into thinking that she’s okay with the abduction, that she’s actually bored and all, and he puts his guard down, which she uses to surprise him and escape. It’s based on a true story Cobain had read about in the news, but in the true story, the woman didn’t survive. Cobain was a feminist, so he wanted a song about a woman who defeats her abductor. Read the lyrics to that song. You’ll see how it all fits-or at least most of it.

Lithium is my favorite Song of them and basically, its about a man living with bipolar disorder. Thats why the chorus is super energetic and the rest is a bit more sad and slow, also lithium is often prescribed against this illness. And the friends in hus head are just hallucibations, and he says "im not gonna crack" all the time to prove he s strong enough to live with it.

I honestly had a really similar experience with this album. I was really into the Beatles in high school, like _really_ into them, but then at some point I found an old homemade rip of this CD and put it on out of curiosity, and in a single moment it was like I realized that there was music that I _actually liked._ I don't think I've listened to the Beatles on purpose since then.
Def Leppard's HYSTERIA album is almost song-for-song perfect.

"Polly" Is a severely serious song about a true story of a girl that was kidnapped and raped and escaped by outsmarting their assaulter. "Territorial Pissing's" is reminding you they are Punk AS Fuck. "Drain You" was actually a love song with a Sonic Youth midsection and Kurt's admitted favorite. Also my exes and my song. "Lounge Act" is just groove till you move. Watch some of their live performances to reach Nirvana

Just FYI in case you aren't aware, this album sold over 30 million copies. That means it's not a gold record, it's not a platinum record, it's a diamond record. It was the third best selling album of the 90s.
This album, and Nirvana in general, influenced an entire generation.

i recommend looking up the lyrics next time you listen to a song/album. these lyrics (especially polly) do have meanings but mostly said as metaphors which is why they can sound like it’s some random words

Really underrated guitar player too, sounding that 'rough' while drawing the ear to something in one listen is no small feat.
Never been another voice like this either; the baby is just an album cover, observation on the music business and treatment of artists if it meant anything. Got the record banned in Walmart etc until they made an alternative/edited cover for the record.
There are LOTS of good albums. Even by smaller bands. The reason why you previously said that if you consider a good album at 3 songs is bc they probably marketed those 3 to be the single or main tracks of the album. I honestly go the opposite direction. If the rest of the songs are better than the singles, then its a great album. I'm glad you are expanding your horizons on music. There is plenty of to still listen. That's the beauty of music. Give Dance Gavin Dance a listen to when you get a chance. You'll be amazed.

When I was a small child, I would sometimes hear on television about men who killed their wives while maintaining that they loved their wives. Naturally, it sounded crazy-like, how can you say you lover her if you *murdered* her?!
These lyrics always made me wonder whether Cobain was referring to those crazy men. “I like it, I’m not gonna crack. I miss you, I’m not gonna crack. I love you, I’m not gonna crack. I kill you, I’m not gonna crack.“ Like, if you’ve gotten to the pint where you’re literally murdering the person you’re claiming to love, you’ve *already* cracked.
The first time you listened to that song, you thought Cobain was singing, “I’m not gonna cap.” Glad to see that, this time, you heard the lyrics correctly.
“Polly”
This song has lots of meaning. It’s an anti-rape song narrated from the voice of a man who has abducted a woman. She tricks him into thinking that she’s okay with the abduction, that she’s actually bored and all, and he puts his guard down, which she uses to surprise him and escape. It’s based on a true story Cobain had read about in the news, but in the true story, the woman didn’t survive. Cobain was a feminist, so he wanted a song about a woman who defeats her abductor.
Read the lyrics to that song. You’ll see how it all fits-or at least most of it.
