One of my favorite quotes from Chopin is 'Simplicity is the highest goal, achievable when you have overcome all difficulties. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.' and i stand by every word of it, many people have the opinion that if a piece is not fast, it is not difficult. For me, what makes classical music so amazing is how much of a story each piece tells. For example, Chopin's Prelude op. 28 no. 4 is undoubtedly one of the easiest of his works, technically, but emotionally, there is so much more to it. Or take Rachmaninoff's Prelude op. 3 no. 2, a very technically demanding piece, for me at least, but it has such a deep story behind it, and the most important thing while playing classical music is to convey the story behind the piece. This is why I believe that it doesn't matter how fast or slow or technically demanding a piece is, if you can tell a story with the music, you are defiantly doing something right! And once again Paul, amazing playing :) you are a very talented man and I love how much work you put into the piano. Keep it up!
I've played both, and while I spent over a year studying rachmaninoff's piece and sight read chopin's I have to say both have equal sentimentality to me, and i play one as often as the other. Your comment put into words how I felt about the pieces, thank you.
It actually IS pretty easy ^^ In my eyes, the difficult part isn't any of the notes themselves, but the regulation of the volume difference between the left and the right hand and to ensure a clear sound because of the many chords that are different but close to each other.
I love how you give as much emotion and care to these “easy” songs as you do the difficult ones. Thank you and by the way, you’re one of my favorite human beings! Keep up the good work!
Agreed so much. I played this years ago, I thought I did alright. Haven't really gone out of my way to listen to too many professional recordings of this and I was shocked at how moving this was. Not surprised I guess, coming from Paul, but shocked nonetheless. I think there was an audible "ohmygod" when he hit the big crescendo near the end. Listening to this with headphones at a good volume, absolutely sublime, and what a beautiful tone on that piano. Magnificent. Thank you Paul.
Chubby Custard relative to some of chopins other work it definitely is easier but still a challenge nonetheless to beginners and intermediate pianists. I’ve been playing for a good 5 months now and this is actually easier than expected but becomes a real challenge toward the end.
well i mean i'm doing this for my grade 5 exams and while learning the notes are easy (cause of the chromatic chords for me) playing robato was a new experience for me and something i personaly found difficult
Thank you, Paul, for all your beautiful Chopin interpretations. This was my favourite to play back when I've had my beloved piano and hearing you play it makes me miss it even more.
@@agamaz5650 heheh yeah within technically. To be honest I really just play like I want to get feedback from the jury since they're so nice and I enjoy the experience heh
It's just beautiful... it gives me the chills every time... it's just the simple idea of notes descending from B to E, but when you think you have reached the E minor chord Chopin puts the V to VI cadence, and then he gives you every chord exept E minor until finally at the end... the E minor chord. Beautiful.
I was having trouble with the tempo and pace/rhythm of this song. After watching this, I was able to play through it perfectly! Keep making videos plz, they're SO helpful 🎼🎹❤️
@Peter Pepperman ugh, i know, but my teacher has an enormous stick up his butt and wants me to 'get it right' I practice it 2 different ways, the way that feels right to me, and the way that my teacher says is correct 😅😭😭
Hi Paul, I've been following you for years and really like your content! You have world class technique, and great musical understanding. Last year I decided to launch my own page, mostly for my own piano compositions. Might you possibly be interested in recording some of them? I could provide you with scores etc. It would absolutely make my day-nay-year (what's left of it) to hear you play just one of them!
Hello Mr Barton. You gave me an advise 4 years ago about not to go to Asia in bicycle. Currently I travel all across America from north to south. Now I’m heading to Shanghai and hope to get to Europe from there. By the way, I love the way you play the piano.
Rather late, but yes. I don't believe it is possible to reuse "Emotions" when playing such pieces. To produce a beautiful but simply piece requires the emotions, mood and feelings. What you play depends on how you embrace the music
Although technically it is not as difficult as many pieces, the piece in the hands of an amateur can be heavy pounding and lack of rubato .It takes a skilled pianist to make music of this. Great job.
Great performance! I noticed that in the fifth last bar, you play an extra e in the C chord and an extra g in the C7 afterwards. Is this intentional or an accident from remembering the notes as harmonies? Because I do that sometimes :)
It's actually a mistake, because repeating the third (E) in the first chord is "wrong" and the 5th (the G) is redundant. There is not any "musical advantage" in playing also those notes :)
volume changes of recording sound strange like adjusted or compression is making it unnatural , maybe just me but notice it more in diminuendo’s. I heard that the last three chords are like a dieing breath as its like the end of a full life story this particular piece goes through the entire circle of fifths in just one page apparently, the last chords are like say in the death bed your breath stops then your last gasp and the exhale to finish as dead :/ is why i consider the second last chord only arpegiates in my rendition. there are other ways to vary how the motives and phrases get louder or softer but in general its your story I like cortot and the variations of all players , many thanks

Very well played. I'm learning this piece with my teacher. I find your right hand fingering strange and incorrect ( using two different notes both times with index f. Ex)
Beautiful playing! Really brought out the emotion in the piece. I am a film student and was wondering if by any chance I could use this in my film exam? I will of course credit you.

I am currently learning this piece. It looks so easy when you're playing this. I'm still struggeling to make this sound good and to get the rubato right...
Curious to know why you played the complete C Major triad in the LH, five measures from the end. The third of the cord is taken care of in the right hand. I really like the “hollowness“ of the left hand with the open fifth. Is there a reason for this? Thanks !
Hi, I have 2 questions, on the 5th bar in the bass clef when we are palying the G# and next the Gbmol, why on the staff is like a Gbmol if we are playing the G natural on the keyboard? And what is the difference betwen the take 1 and 2? Thank you all
I don't like the arpeggio on the second an third last chords. In my eyes it doesn't really fit the idea of the piece. First it is slowly building up, then has a dramatic climax and then it loses tension and turns more and more silent from that point to the end. So the last three notes should be the end point of this and should therefore be played very quietly. By playing them as arpeggios, they get an accent that they shouldn't get and that prevents the piece from actually fading out. Apart of that I really like how you played it.
You should have at least been playing for 3 years. 2-3 weeks will be good. I'm sure those who are a bit better can just sight-read it. It's one of Chopin's easiest pieces
Do you have any tips to memorize this piece? I can play this piece fine with sheet music but I like to memorize all my music but because the left hand is all chords it’s very hard for me to memorize
i used to have the same problem... i fixed it by first understanding the chromatic descend that the left hand does and then i started playing the left hand alone until i couldn't help it but introduce the right hand. With this i managed to understand why this piece is so simple yet so beautiful. remember that chromatic descend is everything ps: sorry for the bad grammar... i speak spanish :P
this is the only piece i dont fully memorise and even though my sight reading is not even grade 1 tbh I do use the music sheet just for this as a guide im hardly looking at it really its probably more of a help for fingering which eventually just fell into place but wierdly i dont attempt to do without the music like i did with everything else as soon as possible and dont like the idea of trying it now ... i feel like a bit schizo with reading lol ... with 8 peices though when you learn a new one you forget all the others no matter how hard you try to keep them all 100 percent its my limit i guess back to learning note letters and try and let teh music be a guide rather than total confusion to even glance at with all my memorised stuff ..
