    It's been long enough that now I'm unsure if I ever played the original or this sequel. Maybe I just remember the Rule 34 version, "Humper the Reckoning" which takes place in Asscroft

    If I'm remembering correctly G4 ran a "making of" special for Wayward and Redeemer, both games were actually made at the same time. This ofcourse was when G4 was a thing, and when they actually aired kickass gaming content, goddamn I feel old now.

    I loved how these games brought all the WoD properties together in one mix, even though it kinda flew in the face of canonicity, plus did it with isometric twin stick shooting. And melee. Played through the GameCube version of the original several times when BlockBuster was still around, messed with Redeemer for a few minutes and never really went back, though I've carved through the GC original several times since. Love your work man.

    I did not get a chance to play this game because it was on the PS2. But I am a bit surprised to see Wayward's partner to be a playable Hunter.
    Out of the current Hunters, the original 4 didnt really say anything to invoke that they dislike their current living conditions. Besided Duce with his "I hate Ashcroft" catch phrase.
    In 1 cutscene, we see how being a Hunter can annoy the hell out of someone. I remember my cousin having that speech completely memorized to speak it on the spot.

      Yeah if you're at all familiar with TT HtR line, it's weird that the Wayward joins up like that as Waywards are the broken zealots of the Imbued and most others avoid them. Doubly so when you realize that Joshua (like Carpenter) is not just a canon HtR character but the signature character of the Wayward Creed and is a violent psychopath who murdered his wife and son the moment after he was Imbued. Worse, he's attached Biblical scripture to his madness and goes by the handle God45 on the hunter.net.
      Yet in the game, he's pretty chill dude...
      People scratch their heads at Carpenter's fetish gear outfit, I scratch my head at Joshua Matthews not being a stone cold psycho.

    "Fun" triva: Joshua was a character from the Pencil and Paper game.
    Something that bugged me back in the day, and I kinda want to get it off my chest now: Let's talk about Hunter: The Reckoning's Creeds for a second.
    In Pencil and Paper, there's seven playable and two "sort of" playable creeds. These were broken down into three different virtues: Mercy, Vision, and Zeal, with three creeds in each virtue.
    Innocents (Mercy) were in the, "monsters are people too," school of thought. This being World of Darkness, there was some truth to that. This was the setting where Werewolves were ecoterrorists who really were trying to save the planet. Mummies were purifying souls who'd suffered in life, while standing against the end of days. Literal Demons from Hell were, at times, sympathetic to humanity.
    Martyrs (Mercy) were more aggressive and would engage in self-sacrifice trying to save the world (or the people in it.)
    Redeemers (Mercy) were focused on saving monsters. So, someone who tries to find a way to turn a vampire human again, for example.
    Visionaries (Vision), which were a creed focused on studying and researching monsters.
    Avengers (Zeal) were your, "hunt 'em all," monster slayers. They tended to take a very aggressive stance against any monster.
    Defenders (Zeal) sought to protect ordinary people from the supernatural.
    Judges (Zeal) were selective, hunting monsters they believed were a danger, or deserved to die, while, often, ignoring ones that weren't a threat.
    So, those were the seven player creeds. The expectation was that players would pick a mix of creeds, and you'd get some pretty solid conflict off of their different perspectives. For example: An Avenger and a Judge might agree that a vampire needs to die, but might differ on the fate of the vampire's ghouls (human thralls.)
    The two other creeds were extraordinarily rare and, basically, unplayable. (The books don't give hard population numbers for the Imbued, but knowing White Wolf, I'd hazard a guess at there only being 25-50 of these two Creeds.)
    A major theme for H:TR was that an Imbued's powers would drive them insane over time. There's explicit comparisons between the Imbued and schizophrenia in the books. The higher their Virtue stats got, the more unhinged they'd become, until they became completely unplayable. The specific explanation was that the powers Hunters received were too much for the human mind to process, so, like an H.P. Lovecraft protagonist, your characters were always running out the clock. The last two creeds took a look at that system, and started sprinting for the finish line.
    Hermits (Vision) were hunters who were so inundated by their insights that they were barely able to function, while probably having one of the most complete understandings of the world they inhabited. Think, loner conspiracy theorists, rambling on about monsters ruling the world, except, in this case, they're right.
    Finally, the reason I'm typing all of this, and my favorite Creed: Waywards.
    Waywards (Vision) were hunters who saw the horrors in the world and reacted with extreme violence. More than the Zeal creeds, Waywards practiced a kind of scorched earth approach to monsters that made them actively dangerous to other Imbued. In particular, Waywards really do not care about collateral damage at all, and there's quite a few examples of these guys waxing other Imbued.
    There's, actually, some background given in the setting. Waywards were supposed to fill a leadership role among the Imbued. Two of the Creed's Edges (powers) directly affect other Imbued (this is the only Creed with abilities like this), one turns on other Hunters' Second Sight ability remotely, and the other one buffs them, while inflicting damage on them. They're supposed to be the Creed that helped bring the others together, to rally them into a unifying force. However, something went wrong in their imbuing, and the entire Creed went psychotic.
    Imbued are never, really, fully safe from one another. For, example: an Avenger might decide to kill an Innocent or Redeemer because they're sheltering a monster. However, for a Wayward other Imbued, and normal humans, are speedbumps. It was always a deeply uncomfortable Creed, that really underlined just how messed up the setting was.
    So, when you stick, "Wayward," on the box, that sounded like it was setting up a very morally gray story about the characters dealing with one of their own on the edge. Combine that with Joshua Matthews, who is an extremely dangerous character in P&P (he's literally, the character on the cover of the Wayward book), and the game we got was really disheartening.

    And now you're heading for Redeemer, my favorite of the trilogy. I'm looking forward to that one.
    As for those NPCs that can see the supernatural but don't have the rest of the Imbued's powers, they are called Bystanders. You see, nearly every World of Darkness line there are the minion class, those people that are in the know about the supernatural, may possess some power and generally serve their type of supernatural (though there are rogue ones that do their own thing). Bystanders are one of the more interesting ones as they COULD have been Hunters themselves but in the moment of their Imbuing, they recoiled from it rather than embrace it. As a result, they can see the supernatural as the Imbued do but have none of their powers or the vague aid the Messengers sometimes provides. So even they do chose to help out, they're limited in just how much they can help the Imbued. Worse, like with all minion classes, they can end up under the thumb as asshole hunters that basically use, abuse and discard them.
    It can really suck to be an Imbued but it has nothing on the Bystanders.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад

      That's so damn cool! I wish there were more media dealing with the WoD. It's so damn interesting.

    • @AkatsukiBoss13
      @AkatsukiBoss13 5 лет назад

      @@AvalancheReviews Indeed. WoD has always been interesting but sadly rather niche. Which has always struck me as a little odd. Yeah, as a tabletop/live-action RPG, it will always have a smaller audience yet the setting of WoD has always been a fascinating one.
      ...Well not so much the early wonky days of the 1st Edition when they were still finding their grove and putting things together.
      Or for that matter the recent 5th Edition where Paradox created a new White Wolf and handed the reigns over to a controversial figure that basically made a massive mess of things to the point that Paradox had to shut down WW and hand the 5th Ed to other RPG studios.
      But yeah, as a whole it is a truly fascinating setting that really deserves more love. The video games that have come out only scratch the surface of it. There's tons of stuff that the games barely touch.
      Take for instance, Wayward's final boss, the Nephwrack. The game tells you little about it. As far as the game is concerned, it's some eldritch alien thing from the Underworld. Nephwrack isn't even it's name but rather what it is. Nephwracks are ancient Spectres, ghosts that were either terrible people in life or ghosts that have utterly consumed by their own darker impulses and become slaves to Oblivion, the Force of Unmaking in the Universe. Nephwracks are those that have been around so long that they've lost all traces of humanity, becoming utterly alien. And they're not even the top of the Spectre food chain. There are things older and more terrible than them.
      Perhaps if Bloodlines 2 and the upcoming Werewolf game are successful, it will open up the setting to wider audiences and lead to more games.

      I think that look is perfect for some games. It can kind of cover up small details up close, but sitting back on the couch, it looks great to me. The ps2's video output is interesting. You won't see those chunky vertical pixels on most games. Just the ones using the 240 line front buffer. Some games look amazing in 480p. Some don't. It's a weird system for sure.

    Looking at the series through the lens the people at White Wolf really just wanting to get more players interested in the World of Darkness and all of the cool stuff they were doing for Hunter: The Reckoning, and Wraith: The Oblivion's releases, I /kinda/ understand why they released the sequel on the ONE console of the day that they didn't originally release on...

      I use a framemeister to upscale them, and an Avermedia Extremecap U3 to cpature to footage. Maybe it's because the framemeister converts the analog vidoe to hdmi?

    • @kamui003
      @kamui003 3 года назад

      Not in the video game no. In the tabletop you can have all 3 virtues but your main virtue can't be lower than the others. It's also impossible to have all the edges. Technically the highest you can take anyone edge is 4 dots, assuming you dedicate all the points of a virtue to the same edge.

    I saw that you have a video about Suikoden tactics and 4, but you don't have a video of Suikoden II??? how dare you! Suikoden II is THE JRPG of JRPGs also the best RPG game ever, no turn based RPG has a flashy cool combat system as Suikoden II also the music and story in that game is 10/10, you need to make a video about it!

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад

      I agree. It's incredible, but I just don't know what I could say about it, that everyone else hasn't already said. I'm always down to replay it, so maybe I'll end up covering it sometime soon. It's been a while since my last jrpg review.

    • @ryomario90
      @ryomario90 5 лет назад

      @@AvalancheReviews I'm sure you could make a quality video about the game, plus all the Suikoden II videos on RUclips are not exactly what I would call a satisfying content so justice needs to be served, we need a Suikoden II Retrospective video! I've seen a LOT of RE review videos, but none of them were as good as your retrospective videos, same goes to the Dino Crisis videos, so I'm waiting.
