  • Dear Friends,
X Factor of the bridge is todays topic.
With this video I would like to dig even deeper regarding the Bridge issue.
I know that all of you would like one short video about how to cut a bridge, but I guess that there are already many videos like that out there and I looked at one or two and I understood that this is not the way how I would ace such important part of my instrument.
Now, all of my videos are meant to be for musicians so that they can open up their eyes in order to understand that what they hear is a matter of many small details.
Also your instrument is a combination of many small details.
Yes I know I am a maniac when it comes to small details, but here I start with one of the first details: the size of the bridge feet.
Their measurements are for me very clearly defined and I show you how you can adjust also the sound of only two strings, in case everything else already shown didn't solve your sound problem.
Hope you enjoy learning with me.

That is absalutely fascinating. Been playing violin 2 weeks and moved the bridge about 8mm or so in front of where it was originally. Tightened the strings, tuned it and it sounded like it's get up and go had got up ang gone, and now I know why😅😅! It was easy to reposition the bridge and retune, so it has been a learning curve for me. Thank you for posting.

Truly , Thank You !! You always educate , inform and inspire with each if your videos !!!
I've found that the numbers are an absolutely necessary starting point . Then , depending on the manufacturer , age , type if wood , thickness if wood ,,, and , and ,,,,these variables will make these numbers vary . I've never done any adjustments to the bass bar ( I'm not that accomplished yet ) but have varied the sound post in every way possible . I don't know why , but I've never even considered adjusting the feet on a bridge . To me , this video was Very eye opening and as always I and Alot of others thank you for what you do !!

Facinating! I can only wonder how many decent violins could be made much better if they had a proper bridge. I can now understand why it would take four hours of work to get the bridge just as you wanted it.

The strings resonate horizontally, therefore the force is like tilting a box up on the opposite corner.

Thank you with respectfully but in my opinion if consider the string's angle on the bridge (most simple) is shown that the net force of each strings are not possible to have direction like that X. Prove by install one by one string we can see which position and how distribution of the net force.

Another great and informative video as always. I have a question here, If increasing the area between the bridge feet will open up more of the sound, What is the ideal bridge feet width???

if the sound travels in diagonal why the bass bar is below the G string 😯 leaving aside structural purpose

I would love to see a video on how to make a bridge from scratch, Fitting a bridge is not making a bridge. I have no doubt that there are other woods better than maple for a bridge.

  • @truth7416
    @truth7416 5 лет назад +1

Helpful as usual. Thanks. How can you make the E string less intense with the bridge?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  5 лет назад +3

if it is only the E string, I wouldn't solve this issue with the bridge. Very likelyI would give a small it on the soundpost ONLY on the lower side (the side which is on the back(maple) towards the neck. Just a hit in order ta you feel that something has changed erase of the hit. less as what you can see. In that case you actually change the touching point area of the soundpost on the opposite upper side towards the top.
      But if you insist:
Soak the bridge where the strings lay with instant glue. This makes the wood harder and might give what you search.
But please NEVER glue the little skin with instant glue. This glue is too hard and later on creates annoying buzzes. Always glue the skin with white or hide glue. More elastic.
      Hope you got the msg.
Have to run now to my exhibition here in Seoul.

Hi i have an old French violin with a shorter body Stop than usual (about 190mm measured from the treble side) the body length is 355mm and the nack length is 130mm . What do you think i should do about the bridge position? Shall i ignore the f nicks?

Hi Edgar! Love your videos and I aspire to own one of your cellos. You stated that making the inside of the foot of the bridge on the treble side a little shorter will improve the low strings. Conversely will making the inside of the bridge foot on the base side shorter help improve the sound of my A and D strings on a cello? Any other ways you can modify your cello bridge to improve he A and D strings? Thank you so much!

      Hi Jose!
I would rather prefer to see you using the word smaller than shorter. Otherwise others believe that I want to twist the bridge. But this is not the case. So we are actually only talking about the size of the bridge feels. Yes or yes?
Now Jose to your question: of course there are ways but before shouting into our community I would actually prefer to see your cello first. Too much "non sense" is out here. I only want to want to know people out there things I am sure it works for sure.
Maybe you can come and visit Cemona or we meet when I am somewhere closer where you are.
Write me an email and I am sure we will find a way.

@@EdgarRuss thanks for the fast respond..
Well i don't know everything, in fact, in some videos you got me out of my own doubts like the force and distressed it is in the wood all zero out, but i still think not in all the cases. In other video you show the it really takes more than a hour to make the best Bridge and i was being hard on myself thinking i was taking to long in finishing one. Although I think your new violin design is going to be a success. Exito
Edgar, what do you think? autism can affect the credibility on the person that is getting his violin or instrument fix or tweak?
Does autism represent a red flag?
      Let me explain myself.
Is it out there people that really refuse to try or or believe that a autism luthier can get it done?
      Thanks again
      I appreciate your time
      Leo
