She made that seem sooo easy. I can tell you, that although I've played violin for many decades and have a degree in classical guitar from Sydney Conservatorium, I can't do any but the most basic adjustments to my violin. The work shown in the video takes years to become adept at and even putting in a soundpost is, for most players, something not to be attempted let alone perfected. The soundpost must be in just the right spot and a millimetre here or there will have the instrument playing poorly or at its best. This work is demanding of a very stable, relaxed and decidedly unflustered temperament. These people are true craftspeople just as a violin, or any instrument, maker must be.
This must be the best walkthrough of how to set up a violin that I've ever seen on RUclips. Rebecca Ensley is not only knowledgeable, but also a natural teacher. Very pleasant video to watch, and very well explained. Thanks!

This is a basic "Fly-Over", as Rebecca would also tell you. I am originally a Guitar Luthier/Builder, and yes, no matter what type of instrument, Luthiery is a very 'involved' art, utilizing a huge plethora of specialized tools, and talents!!! Go girl, my thanx for a very enjoyable video.

What is the standard string height under the strings at the nut , and , how do you go about setting the height from fingerboard to the bottom of the tuned strings at the top end of a violin fingerboard, ??? Again, I found the video very helpful, Cheers :]

4mm for E is not bad. some prefer too low strings, but softer string action makes softer sound (and vice versa with harder string action)
Have you ever done a set up of a bridge on an electric violin .
is there a violin with a wider fret board? I noticed that my fingers tips at times are a bit wider and hits the other side strings. How could I avoid hitting the other side strings? And also can I lower the bridge (shave or trim off the edge) so that the action of the violin would alot lower to the fret board?
You could purchase a 14 inch viola and put on violin strings. Every size Viola is supposed to have a wider fingerboard than a violin as far as I know. Might you be a guitar or mandolin(same tuning) player transitioning? They seem to always want to call fingerboard a fret board don't they!
moldyore-there are people who play MANY instruments and eventually move on to violin after they've mastered others like guitar mandolin piano etc.I did! But the work involved is the most I have ever had to give to learn ..did you know that the vibratto is different on guitar -I do it left to right of the string like I did on my classical guitar not forward and backward rocking on fingertip expected of you on violin. I gouged out my first cheap violin because it was a soft wood fingerboard due to my vibratto and while it sounded beautiful it was limiting at best and damaging at worst. I had to unlearn it and start from the beginning as a child would..but I got it faster than most would have but it did require daily playing to work out all those muscles as I'd lose it if I stopped a few days or week. Violin/ cello/ viola -all take more work than most any other instrument except maybe those cool chinese erhu violin or the Mongolian version of erhu. They do this real cool vibratto thing on two strings only and that slidey sound you hear is because they have only two strings to get that range of notes in..so I say never give up.. accept it will take along time and rise to the rewarding challenge.
Oh yeah..the bridge. Yes you can file it sand it etc. I biught a bunch of cheap bridges off ebay just in case but i got it rught the first time and you can too!.but I'd say first look it up on you tube or pay a luthier the first time but only if they will do it in front of you so you can see what they do. Also know that bluegrass fiddlers file it a little different sometimes to aid in doublestops..but that's the extent of my self taught knowledge on it.

EndofUSA, if your having trouble with fingers hitting the other strings, you're probably not arching your finger and putting too much of the pad on the fingerboard. As far as the bridge , the easiest way to lower the bridge is to take it off the violin and trace the top on paper. Next ,cut the image on the paper out and place it little lower on your bridge and draw a line where the image top is touching the bridge. This will give you a mark to shave or sand down the top of the bridge. Hey, molyoreo, if you had more brains than mouth, you could have helped EndofUSA out, instead of being a jackass. Annoying and off-putting background music, sorry, couldn't watch it all, it was too distracting.
So broad. 101 break down style. "bring your instrument to us and we will do it for you." You lost the generosity approach in order to gain trust. Take your time to study up some more marketting tactic first before starting your next vdo.
The European masters provide more skills and knowledge than you guys. It's hard to follow anyway those master, And as a result we respect that they made it looks so easy.
And at the end of hat why we would send the instrument to them.
Sorry to say it but I bought just a violin on Aliexpress for $150 and it was fitted and sounds absolutely amazing including your "standard measurements" 5mm for G and 3mm for E strings clearence. But it has a decent wood with massive spruce and high quality maple with nice natural flames.
Chinese simply copied Western know-how and now they mass-produce decent quality for the price absolutely out of the reach of Western producers.
And BTW. They needn't to demonstrate their quality on extra violin with handmade varnish and high price tag.
Your video was demonstrated on such violin but there are many others hanging on the stands.
I really doubt every of dark instrument has quality high enough to be shown on the camera.But Chinese make quality setup even on violins worth $150 including post fees.
Is it as bad for you as it can be. You setup one violin in 20 minutes. Meanwhile Chinese did 2000 violins just as good as yours but for the fraction of the price.
I would really like to see how well any individual could set up 2000 violins in 20 minutes (0.6 seconds per violin).
