    Film a Contingency Review! In this eleventh episode, we test a 2018 Fiat 124 Spider Lusso Plus, which is very like an ND Mazda MX-5 for obvious reasons. On this occasion, open and close a roof, fail to find some cupholders, raise some windows and generally ramble on about things of no consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then!

    Lovely car…I would definitely consider one…I do though wonder why Fiat didn’t just carry over the Mazda engine and suspension as well rather than drop their own in - why bother changing something that I assume is pretty good in the MX5? If im nit picking the Fiat badge on the bootlid looks like a bit of an afterthought but otherwise I reckon its a design success! Also, manual hood is a huge bonus as far as im concerned!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +3

      I think Fiat were keen to stamp their own identity on the car, and fitting their own engine, along with suspension revisions, helped them to complement the styling changes. It didn't work, though, as production ended after less than three years, sadly.

    FIAT?, why on earth didn't they badge it as the new Dustin Hoffman Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +2

      Thanks ever so much indeed for watching and commenting, Clive! That's a really good question. As far as I understand it, the original plan was for it to badge it as an Alfa Romeo. However, this would have been a major change from previous Alfa Romeo policy, which dictates that all models are made in Italy. Fiat makes cars in several different countries already, so it was a much better fit in this regard.

    This is an exceptional vehicle that is in exceptional condition!
    I see more Fiat 500 vehicles than I do of this particular 124 Spyder.
    I believe 2019 was the last year for this particular vehicle in the US, I'm not positive.
    The Multiair engine powered most of Fiat vehicles in the US 🇺🇸. I just spotted a 500L, just as rare as this Spyder.
    I believe it did not sell well because it was not "Fiat", meaning this was badge-engineered. Fiat purists most likely wanted something completely Fiat. From your review, this has the best of Fiat combined with Mazda.
    The front end has that very long bonnet (hood), which I never really noticed before! Same model line-up here in the US as well.
    Excellent review Joseph, thank you very much!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +1

      The 124 Spider was a bit of an odd one, as it wasn't a lot of Fiat engineering, but basing it on an MX-5 should have been meant a very solid platform (and indeed it does). They got the design just right, but even so, but the sales numbers never materialised. A shame, however, examples like this are an absolute joy.

    What a lovely car! I agree with your admiration of its looks: it is gorgeous. Designing the front and rear sections in Italy and the centre section in Japan could have been a recipe for a Frankenstein result but it has obviously worked exceedingly well.
    I like the controls very much and strongly agree with your comments about the absence of a touch screen.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      The Mazda system in this car is quite simple by 2022 standards, but it works surprisingly well. The car does have a centre section very similar to the MX-5, but it isn't to the car's detriment at all. I don't know why this wasn't more popular, really.

    • @seancooke7332
      @seancooke7332 2 года назад

      No Roy, the Spider is a far more integrated design than the Cadillac BLS or the wonderful Austin 3 litre.
      Adapting an existing centre section to use new front and rear ends can be done very well or very badly. Mazda and Fiat knocked this one out of the Park.
      I wonder if the decision to drop the model was influenced by the establishment of the Stallantis Partnership.
      Anyway, gorgeous car.

    I've enjoyed my '17 classica for just over a year now. I'd always driven trucks but when it came time to get a newer vehicle the Fiat was the only manual transmission on the lot. Thank you for this video! I am not sure if any of these Fiats came to New Zealand but as I have implied in earlier comments, the MX-5 has maintained a strong following in New Zealand. There was rally version of this Fiat that competed in the poorly contested GT section of the World Rally Championship, paying homage to the original car's success in rallying.

    It's great to see a Fiat version rather than the Abarth which seem to vastly out number them.
    Ive never been able to get a definitive answer but have always suspected the Fiat may have focused a little more on style and comfort than the Abarth which I would expect prioritises performance.
    It is a pretty looking car and I think will only look better and better as it ages. The interior is very MX-5 though but I don't think that is any real hardship.

      It's very strange that this country seems to have had more Abarth 124s sold than the Fiat version, but checking the figures reveals around 2600 Fiat 124 Spiders and 1750 Abarth 124 Spiders of this shape, so these are more common, but perhaps don't come out very much. • @lm971120
    @lm971120 8 месяцев назад

    The used one of these will start to make more and more sense (hence I'm quiet as I'm waiting). In the current crazy used car market, for a similar price (ie. Lusso at 11k), you will only get the earliest MX-5 ND 1.5 with higher mileage and older age, not to mention likely the SE spec which doesn't even have parking sensors (and Nav was optional) or padded dashboard unlike the Lusso. (You can occasionally get a very high mileage 2.0 early ND1 which is known to have gearbox issues, while the 124 does not due to using the NC box). This is of course before even counting the fact that 1.5 has less power&torque (reviewers in the early days all compared to the 2.0 160 ND1, which was quite unfair). On top of these, you also get the bonus of extra boot space and exclusivity.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, this car will probably have risen in value a bit since I tested it 18 months ago. The secondhand market is already showing signs of dropping (I released a video about this last week), but for certain cars, the prices are holding quite firm. I have tested all other generations of MX-5, so an ND should be on the cars at some point.
