I remember thinking that at the time, when I watched this live. He was known for being a Method Actor back then, and he went so deeply into this character that perhaps it took several months to fully climb back out.
Tom Cruise SHOULD have won for Best Supporting Actor opposite Hoffman for Rain Man. NO QUESTION. I just watched the movie again, and it's TOTALLY ludicrous that Cruise didn't even get nominated, it's his BEST work. They were BOTH amazing.
Totally agree. It was this role for Cruise that I changed my mind about him. Thought he was a light weight basically before this. Born on the Fourth of July was the one that really blew me away...and this one.
Yeah, I feel sorry for Tom, Hollywood has it out for him, after his body of work, he has had tons of great performances (and a few bad ones) but I just think for political reasons and scientology people unfortunately hate him. Well, I don't, I separate the actor from his personal life which isn't my business. Tom is one of the hardest working actor there is, and some deference should be given from other actors.
Just watched the movie. This Oscar was well-deserved. But it bugs me how he didnt mention Tom Cruise. Apart from his excellent acting skill, the person he co-starred with should also be a major factor for his success
You are right. He forgot. But then the next presenter that came out said that Dustin was going crazy backstage and had begged him to mention that he wanted to thank Tom and how broken up he was that he had forgotten.
not really..winnona ryder said in an interview she hated her co star in dracula. gary oldman she thought he was a creep but they had good chemistry for the movie.
I remember the next presenter who came out to do the next segment said that Hoffman was pulling his hair in the green room because he forgot to thank Tom Cruise.
Yes, I forgot which presenter it was but he told the audience and Tom Cruise who was in the audience that Dustin was backstage very upset because he forgot to thank him. Then later in the evening, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise presented together, and again, Dustin Hoffman said that he was so upset that he forgot to thank Tom . . . he said "Tom, I love you very much."

And I tell you as a mum of a gorgeous little boy of five with autism. They are lovable. my son can play the piano and his music teacher cant stop cryi g when he realises that a little boy of 5 years that cannot speak can feel the music inside his heart and touch the piano without being tought previously. IDK all about this guy. What I do know is that he is one *gifted* actor. He's here at the Oscars still shaking off Raymond's mannerisms. Some people just have it. And he is one of them.
If he had looked disappointed after Hoffman’s name was announced I’d believe it, but he looked genuinely happy for him. I think Hanks honestly just wanted to kiss his wife. I could be wrong, just the way I read it.
Unfourtantly it was too strong of a year for those to be nominated. Like who should you take out, out of the nominees? Gene Hackman, Max Von Sydow, Edward James Olmos, Tom Hanks? Its impossible.
Is that based on the novel? If so I remember reading that in college and always wanted to comment to the professor how I thought this was basically a play by play of that Nirvana song. It was, but this was back before Google and I said nothing.
I don’t believe “Rain Man” is my all times favorite, and the most unbelievable fact is that it is not due to the performance of Mr. Hoffman rather the performance of his brother in the movie.
He seemed nervous as hell but very fortunate to win the oscar an showed his appreciation to about everyone just because people are rich an famous don’t mean they don’t get stage fright to lol.

IDK all about this guy. What I do know is that he is one *gifted* actor. He's here at the Oscars still shaking off Raymond's mannerisms. Some people just have it. And he is one of them.
Absolutely no doubt it's Dustin's greatest roll. Much like forest gump is tom hanks. So glad he got the oscar.

Have you not seen Midnight Cowboy, or Kramer vs. Kramer?
He was excellent in 'Little Big Man' and 'Marathon Man'
No way! The Graduate was his best performance!
TessTess Hutchinson *role
Tess.....you have a lot to learn about an a tots life's work, as well as movies made b4 1989
1:12 Tom Hanks kisses his wife knowing tonight would not be his night. Or any of the other nominees. Clearly one performance stood out that year.
the best acting performance i ever watched in my life still watching rain man
Tom Hanks looks sooo young I realize that I should watch his early movies!
This Oscar was so deserved, great movie and great actor.
Its kind of strange how he didnt directly thank tom cruise
he should thank 'TOM CRUISE "
HE FORGOT HE WAS TOO NERVOUS BUT HE FIXED IT LATER
Lol....he's still in character man!
@@d.tslash Later when ?
It's still entertaining to watch this many years after it came out. A great performance and Tom Cruise was great also.
I watched that movie when I was like 12 on New Year's Day with my mom in our kitchen. Dustin killed it.
Good memory! I saw this when I was 12 as well, but remember little else.
How on earth did he forget Tom. .how ??? Had it not been for Tom his character wod have been Flat. Anyone agrees
I would guess there was no love lost between them. Both Hoffman and Cruise have huge egos!
He's still in character
All great movies and great versatile actors but Hoffman, hands down is the clear winner here :)
The fact that Cruise wasn’t nominated shows they still get these wrong. The movie works because of Hoffman AND Cruise.
Great performance by Hoffman but Edward James Olmos was tremendous in Stand and Deliver. He was equally deserving.
either of those two nominees would have fully deserved it.
Tom Hanks thought he had it...haha
Big, lol. Can't believe that flick was up for consideration.
I thought that was a bit premature!
If he had looked disappointed after Hoffman’s name was announced I’d believe it, but he looked genuinely happy for him. I think Hanks honestly just wanted to kiss his wife. I could be wrong, just the way I read it.
@@briantwiss9078 I think Hanks always kisses his wife right before the award is announced, win or lose.
@@briantwiss9078 Yeah he didn't show any expression of disappointed or shocked.
0:38 river phoenix in the back lol
wow, good eyes!
fatefai he looked pretty bored lol
Heroin will do that to you.
@@vinnyd01 when you are on heroin, all you ever think of is heroin.
With Martha Plimpton by his side.
That moment between Hoffman and Hackman was so fucking classy! So cool!
I’m always moved when I see rain man. My brothers autistic and its Hoffman’s best work.
I'm baffled that Jeremy Irons wasn't nominated for Dead Ringers, as well as Bob Hoskins for Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Or Bill Murray in Scrooged
RyT1994 Tom Cruise for Rain Man, too. Competitive year.
Unfourtantly it was too strong of a year for those to be nominated. Like who should you take out, out of the nominees? Gene Hackman, Max Von Sydow, Edward James Olmos, Tom Hanks? Its impossible.
2 Oscars. It's a shame he doesn't get any good role nowadays. In "Perfume" he was excellent though.
Is that based on the novel? If so I remember reading that in college and always wanted to comment to the professor how I thought this was basically a play by play of that Nirvana song. It was, but this was back before Google and I said nothing.
The Oscar curse
What a year of amazing movies. Tom Hanks in Big and Edward James Olmos for Stand and Deliver! But Dustin Hoffman's performance is stellar.
I don’t believe “Rain Man” is my all times favorite, and the most unbelievable fact is that it is not due to the performance of Mr. Hoffman rather the performance of his brother in the movie.
Kim Peek was a true inspiration, Hoffman nailed the role 🙏
Dustin hoffman is a great actor and truely deserved winning this oscar. He is such a humble and nice guy.
He seemed nervous as hell but very fortunate to win the oscar an showed his appreciation to about everyone just because people are rich an famous don’t mean they don’t get stage fright to lol.
Not a little of the films success was down to the role Tom Cruise played; pity Dustin didn't mention this great performance.....imagine the film without Cruise as Charlie and his outstanding , gradual change of attitude to Raymond......budding actors take note.
I saw the film again recently and it was Tom Cruise who really carried the picture.
I agree. I just watched it again last night.Tom Cruise is excellent in this movie.
From me, Dustin Hoffman is the best actor of our time! Sinse The Graduate!
Douglas would be GREAT as a voice actor.
Classy man. Amazing actor. Beautiful eyes.
Who thanks the disabled friends of one's father? Dustin Hoffman, that's who! It was beautiful to hear.
