Also consider that Prince produced and wrote for, and promoted the careers, of ONLY WHITE women (Sinead O'Connor, The Bangles, Sheena Easton, etc). He even produced country-singer Kenny Rogers! When Prince made movies he ONLY chooses WHITE co-stars (see that the movies Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge, and Under the Cherry Moon all had white/non-black co-lead characters). Rick James produced a diverse group of artists and had white band members (actually started out his career with a Neal Young and an all-white band).
It is obvious that Prince was color-struck, as while Rick James produced Teena Marie (who just happens to be white), the Mary Jane Girls, The Temptations, Smokie Robinson, Eddie Murphy, other than The Time, Prince produced STRICTLY for white artists. In an over 40-year career of producing, I can't name one BLACK FEMALE artist (or black band) that was promoted or produced Prince -- this says a lot!
This is very ironic since it was a black audience (specifically Detroit, MI) established his career and the black female audience essentially broke him into the mainstream. In fact, I've never met a black female who WASN'T a huge Prince fan or obsessed with Prince. NOTE: Early on in his career, Prince even "claimed" Detroit as his "hometown", although I never heard him speak on the many social issues that were impacting Detroit, MI. Going further, at the end of his career/life, Prince had an ALL WHITE FEMALE band...you mean to tell me that Prince never met a sister that could meet his standards on drums, bass, keyboards, or guitar?!? He never met a sister that had a voice that he could produce?!?!

Prince stole some. Of Rick's act. Can't blame Rick for being pissed. However Prince did surpass Rick on his own in ALOT of different ways. This shook Rick to his funky core. Rick was the shooting star of funk. But then......along came Prince. Prince was a comet of alot of different genre. Rick's step and shine started burning out. Rick got jealous. , he didn't know how to move forward or change his act up. So Prince passed him up in alot of different ways. Prince was sexy and could dance , Prince had a new look with clothes and hair. Rick stayed stuck , and got real bitter. His big mouth only hurt his own self. When he shot his mouth off about Prince. , all he did was promote Prince by talking about him. Rick wasn't realising that the more he talked about Prince the more he promoted Prince. Prince was younger and newer on the scene . Rick was older school funk. Rick's star burned out as Princes comet swirled into purple oblivion. !!! No one had a chance standing next to Prince. Prince use to be Rick's opening act. ........Prince went far and beond them days. ....prince would not want to work with Rick. Rick had it backwards by saying he wouldn't work with prince. Rick KNEW he had it backwards !!!!!

Also it was Prince that started R&B bands replacing a brass section with the 2 keyboard player setup because before that no bands were doing that, I feel Rick, Prince and The System were the main artists to take Black Music out of the Disco Era and sprung the Teddy Riley's whom took Black Music through another phase

@@DetroitIfa That's true but even if Rick did create his own genre, none of the other bands really attempted to copy his sound, most of the bands copied Prince's setup, with two keyboards and groove's like The Time and I believe groups like "Mother's Finest" also influenced Prince, since them like Funkadelic were progenitors of the hybrid Funk/Rock genre, both were without brass and combined the two genres
Also it was George Clinton that gave Prince the idea of splitting the music into two different concepts, like having The Time showcase his R&B/Funk side, like George did with Parliament and the Punk/Rock/Funk he done with The Revolution like George done with Funkadelic

I have Rick James' book and he says in his autobiography that he was jealous of Prince. He actually thought Prince was a talented musician. I like RJ's music but I love Prince's music. Rick could've had even more success if he didn't have a severe drug addiction to cocaine & crack cocaine. Plus he was very vocal in the 80s about what was going on in the music industry. Like MTV wasn't playing Black artists music videos and RJ would be very vocal about saying that was messed up. MTV wouldn't play his music videos saying they were too sexual. Which is b.s. They were racist and didn't think Black artists were talented. They saw Rick as a threat. He'd literally cuss them out and do interviews talking about MTV not playing Black artist's music videos.

The difference between Rick James and Prince is that definitely the work ethic for sure, Prince just simply rose to a higher level in that department. Those who worked with Prince will no doubt say the same. I'm willing to bet Prince has more unreleased tracks than Rick James has tracks released and unreleased. In fact, Prince was a music prodigy James was not. Prince took the time to learn the work ethic of a James Brown at a young age and ran with it thus the longevity we see with his career. I was born 1970 so I got the chance to see it all, there was more of a comparison between Prince and Michael Jackson than of Rick James. James wouldn't work with prince because he couldn't, there would be a work ethic issue between them. Not saying that Rick never worked hard to get to where he got, but with Prince it's unmatched. What I remember of Rick was great songs good style but from Prince, no one can deny he was greatness.

💖Are you people really buying that @#$t about Prince stealing from Rick James? And before you say it, I read Rick's book too. Just because it's in a book doesn't make it gospel.
Do you think that Prince stole Rick's style of dressing?! For those of you who weren't around turning that time that was the look of the late 60's and 70's. It's more like who didn't dress that way back than. Just about every rock band was dressing like that and Prince was always changing his look. Prince never ever wore his hair with sparkly cornrows which was Rick's trademark hairstyle. If he had I would be saying " Prince Stole Rick's Hairstyle " right along with the rest of you. On the other hand musician Patrice Rushen also wore her hair in glittery cornrows or braids ( Maybe she stoled that from Rick 😉). Prince at the beginning of his career had a big crush on her. I think he wrote the song I Want To Be You're Lover about Patrice. That wasn't going to happen though, because I think Patrice was into big muscle man at the time, lol.
Oh let me guess. Does this have something to do with putting together a girrrl group? There have always been girl groups. And yes sexy girl groups. Maybe more sexy after Prince got one together, but sexy none the less. Also when Prince signed his record contact in 1977, long before he ever toured with Rick James, he had it added in his contact that he would be able to bring in other acts. Groups, band's and solo performers. Also he would be able to make movies and have complete control over his music. He was the first music artist ever aloud to do that. Rick James was not the originator to putting together groups and bands. If you're looking to give anyone credit for that, even though I'm not sure he was the first give it to Barry White. For his Love Unlimited Orchestra and his all girl group featuring his ex-wife in the girl group Love Unlimited.
Ok what's next? Oh some of you have bought up The Time. I guess you think Prince stole that idea from Rick too. Prince was only aloud to put out one album a year that was under his name. He wanted to release as many as he wanted. The only way that was possible was to release his music through other artists. He released his R&B and funk music through The Time and his Dance, NuWave and pop music through Vanity 6. So once again, nothing to do with Rick. Rick was the one who came up with a male group after The Time. What were they called again? Something about Dewrags?
The Time for the most part were already assemble before their first album was released. Because Prince had already done most of the work. But a lot of the members of The Time were in a band together called something else I don't remember right now before they came to work for Prince. He didn't get them together because of Rick, they were old highschool friends and Prince wanted to give them a break. Not that they ever really appreciated it, but that's how that came about.
Ok, some of you have bought up Rick's back up band as something else you believe Prince stole from Rick. And the wows don't stop. You don't know that all solo performers have back up musicians? You don't know that back up musicians have been giving names from as far back as the 1940's and 1950's big band era? Solo performers name their band's. And two of Prince's favorite artist named their band's. James Brown and Sly Stone for example. But if you're still trying to make Rick a big influencer over Prince's ideas therefore his career, well this one you're just going to have to let go. If someone was the reason why Prince give his back up band a name that someone was his father. He named Prince after his back up jazz band. THE PRINCE ROGERS BAND.
Can we all agree on one thing? Sense a lot of you love pointing out that Rick was around before Prince, then why did it take Prince doing all those things for Rick to finally do something? If Rick wanted to create a girl group and another band he had move then enough time to do it.
Ok I'll give you one think that Prince stoled from Rick James. VANITY💋! She jumped on the back of Prince's motorcycle and they rode off into the🎼 PURPLE RAIN, PURPLE RAIN.🎵💖🛀💖

I like Rick James but Rick was hot, Prince was a legend, 100 years from now Rick James will be a footnote in music history but they will still be playing princes music like they do Beethoven and Mozart now.

Wrong… you must don’t know music. Prince stop making hit's 14 years after Musicology. Then start putting out another 10 bad albums. While, MJ still had hits even from his last album Invincible that still sold over 10 million units.. www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/michael-jackson/5648176/Michael-Jacksons-best-selling-studio-albums.html

Also, Rick James song are still playing use on a lot of TV commercials and movies trailers. I'd never hear any Prince music on TV. So... you look like a idiot not knowing this.

Vision L OK first off I'm talking 100 200 years from now, what Music that was in commercials 50 years ago now? Second I didn't say Rick didn't have any hits or great songs but just that princes music standard test of time and I don't think Rick James music will. Third as far as me not knowing music and being an idiot I have a bachelors degree in music and played in many bands over 30 years so I think I know a little something about music.

You and your click bait titles. I think always resented Prince’s success. Rick had success on his own and I like him but I think he was insanely jealous of P.

The truth was that Rick was jealous of Prince. Rick was talented and a great funk musician, but he couldn't hold a candle to his Royal Badness, who was a musical genius, and Rick even knew that himself.

James played multiple instruments, but Prince was ACCOMPLISHED on multiple instruments, and as a guitarist, one of the best ever who could even rival Hendrix. Prince engaged in multiple music genres, r&B, rock, blues, and pop. Rick, a frustrated rock musician, was pigeon-holed in r&b. Prince could even brilliantly fuse the most two popular genres -- rock and r&b -- and make his own style of unique music.

So... he did hit a wall.

The "Neil" he's taking about is Neil Young. Rick was in a band with Neil Young in the late 60's. I can't imagine what that must've sounded like. Hahahaha.

If you read his book you could see he had a jealous respect for Prince and acknowledged that he thought Prince was a genius...but he did not respect Prince as a human being or a a person.

Kelven Dyson, Yes. If you really think about it, and be fair, you can understand why Rick felt this way.

SheisAware Now...well yes..Prince was coming into his own and bringing a new type of funk/punk and performance plus he stole Vanity from Rick so Rick was icing Prince every chance he got...I totally understand that. However, Prince should've kicked his ass for that vodka incident.

Kelven Dyson Rick as human had no room to talk bad about Prince. Rick got in alot of ugly legal trouble over his perverted sex life mixed with cocaine. Rick reminds me of Ike Turner. , he ruined his career over his personal demons. Prince worked and shined all the way to his last day on earth.
