Joe was one of my main inspirations to quit drinking and to maintain my sobriety.. He showed me that it was OK to admit you had a problem and that life’s gonna be OK without the booze.

He was always a well liked and respected person . He was always a great guy that people liked He was just a danger to himself and never really mistreated others like the other eagles did and he was never really part of the inner problems with the eagles and he continued to work with Glen and Don after the eagles broke up playing on their solo records and making concert appearances with them.
I got fully sober 8 and a half months ago. 253 days to be exact. Was just tired of feeling so down. I told myself and made a self pact one night after being fucked up and depressed, that the next morning I would wake up and give it my all to not drink and not smoke anymore. Took it hour by hour. Day by day. After like two weeks I knew I had cleared the hardest part and kept going. Every day is a new victory. Sure I have thoughts that pull me. I stay strong because I know I'm better now than I was before.
Spencer Herren Yup. One day at a time. Last week it turned into 9 full months. Slowly but steady now going for 10 month.

People like myself know how incredibly tough that can be, I was inspired by someone like Joe in 1999 to get clean and never looked back. Still a work in progress through the uncertain times what with all the madness today, my work as a counselor and the city itself sometimes. I came here to read the comments, and they are as Awesome as I expected, keep sharing the love! There are many more of us out here and that is comforting for me to know:)

Scotty I'm thinking that Joe was a famous person version of me being what's called a functional addict or alcoholic meaning that we could somehow keep jobs and conduct ourselves as if we had no addiction problems which I did for a little over 35 years which pretty much equals the half of my life that I spoke of 😢 and I'm sorry y'all who may be seeing this message and I figure I'm just about the last person to give anyone advice which is why I usually stop at I've got 17 years sober plus 35or so of being an alcoholic junkie which adds up to 52 years of my 73years and if you throw in that I started my addictive ways in my early twenties which was when I was discharged from active duty in the Navy in 19 71 and for any of you Millenials and younger folks will check with your parents they may tell you a what we (those who answered Uncle Sam's call for help the way my generation had been raised and taught was our patriotic duty) got involved in,in a little south east Asian country called south Vietnam 😅😅😅😢😢

As a alcoholic in recovery for 17 years I know exactly what Joe Walsh is talking about when he talks about chasing the high that you never catch ag again before you hit your bottom which is different for every alcoholic or junkie (drug addict) and much like Joe iwas an alcoholic junkie which for those who know 12 step programs made me a major dual addict for close to half of my life and I'm 73years old and pray to my Higher Power every day and part of those prayers are for the guidance I need each day to stay strong and sober so I can do and learn as much as possible each day what I'm supposed to do and learn mostly about myself so that staying sober is the main thing on my mind and I just try to do what feels like what I should do at any given moment and by doing that I've got 17 years sober and I'm so very glad and yes , proud that I've got those years o sober experience under my belt and plan to keep on keepin on for the rest of my life God willing 😮😅😊

When you find out ice cream is going to kill you, you always justify "just how much I can handle" and then the other mind says "your a pro, you can handle this" just before the warm paralysis and gag reflex hit you, and you die from what should have been erradicated years ago.
Where is the treatment, and if you can "pool test' for C19, why not heroin?
@@user-hr9ky3vl4d It took me 47 years, many failures, and a 4 month primary 12 step program, followed by a secondary program in a crazy city - San Francisco. In my addictions I had created a lot of wreckage and hurt a lot of people, not to mention the emotional and physical damage that I had done to myself. Those experiences actually helped me to grow into a person that I can love today. But the work is soul searching, and most people cannot do it alone, so get help if you need it. My ego was my worst enemy, but it can be an ally. NEVER give up on yourself once YOU have decided you want your life back. The relapses and hardships are learning opportunities. "Do not quit until the miracle happens"!
@@paulguzman1634, I agree with every word you said. I like all addicts (mine was booze) was an alcoholic 30+ years. Nothing helped, I tried meetings, would do good....then fail. I prayed hard for all those years too. After a 3 day binge I woke up, felt like shit & my craving for booze was gone. My Dr. & Therapist didnt get it & are still scratching their heads, how could that happen ? I did outpatient treatment, it wasnt even necessary but I had to prove to people I was done. Call it what you will but Im sticking with God reached down & made me the person I was before I drank, Divine intervention if you will. Im the luckiest man alive, I should be dead. Hang in there A BCD & do whatever it takes. God Bless my brother

I watched the History of the Eagles on Netflix. Joe has the BEST personality.
I remember in school coming across a couple of guys like Joe. When you caught them at the right time they were present but the rest of the time they had the same look Joe exhibits in the earlier clips, haggard and dragged down. It’s remarkable how good Joe looks today even with his age. His eyes have sparkle and life, his thoughts are clear and he speaks with conviction. Joe’s best songs have a wonderful soulfulness to them that is unique to him, thank goodness he survived to write them.
Love the guy. So glad he cleaned up. The best!!
As an addict myself, I can truly say that recovery is an ongoing process. There is no "recovered" addict. As long as we're alive, the possibility of going back is there. But part of the joys of life is when you successfully resist the temptation, even after struggles and relapses. It's the hardest thing in the world, but it is possible.
I was an alcoholic for eight years. I'm not completely sober now since I can still tolerate a beer and be OK without getting out of control. If I hit the heavy stuff, like vodka which I used to binge on several nights a week by itself, then I'll lose control. I understand some people can't even control one beer. It rubs different people different ways. But I never knew anyone that had an alcohol problem or a drug problem that didn't also have some sort of deep psychological issue. It goes hand in hand. Joe said he hid behind all his insecurities with humor and he'd developed a dependence on booze and drugs because of James Gang Rides Again being a huge hit, and he made it while he was under the influence. So he became convinced that was a winning formula.
I got off just in time for my daughter to need my blood for cancer surgery.
God knew just the rite time for me. Thanks Joe for inspiring so many.
It can be done & I was on 260 mg's oxy per day ! It was hard but, Gods
timing for me was spot on.
I will live around pain with epidurals & Neurontin ! Way to go Gorilla !

Boy ! What was hard for Joe is all his fellow musician's that he worked with were all on something that made them feel great ! The one that kept is eye on Joe more was Rick the Bass player Rosas ! He really saw Joe hit rock bottom & still kept W/ Joe on the road doing Radio Shows across the country ! Rick always believed in Joe & Joe surprised Rick by getting better 1day at a time ! I was talking to Rick right at the end & he told me that Joe was on his way back & he was about to ROCK everyones block ! When Joe * Waddy * and Vitale get together its like magic all over again ! Ringo will now keep him in shape & will make him eat * sleep * & exercise right !

I am so happy you were able to get sober Joe and find peace of mind in your life. This man, despite writing so many legendary tunes, is still, I feel, criminally underrated in rock music. I own every James Gang album, the amazing "Barnstorm" album (with, IMO, the most underrated song in the history of rock music, "Mother Says"), all of his solo albums, and of course the Eagles records that he played on. It's a shame that Frey and Henley didn't let him cut loose more, guitar wise, on "The Long Road Out Of Eden," but there was just a magical connection that he shared with Don Felder that, business disagreements aside, was undeniable and couldn't be replicated on a new Eagles album with another guitarist.
Joe is a genius. I just love him. God bless him. Thank God he got better. We'd like to keep him around awhile. 💗 I love watching him play and sing. What a beautiful, talented, silly man. He's a guitar wizard. I LOVE YOU JOE!
I love Joes Music he really is one of the all time greats, a true Maverick and Musical Master, I think he realised he had to change in order to carry on doing and enjoying what he loves(MAKING MUSIC), everything he said here makes complete sense, you just chase it and it’s a waste of time and the older you get the harder you suffer for it, this short footage has convinced me to stop drinking, not that I have a big problem, but it’s becoming one and it really isn’t worth it . I met Joe , he shuffled to the door like an old man. Kind of made me feel sad seeing such an icon of mine now a feeble old guy. Age gets us all. He was a very delightful person to be around. No drama , just kindness.

And with drugs and artistic expression; it's not the drugs. The real problem is that you're not comfortable enough with yourself to let it out. For some ppl, it actually hurts (depression etc) if they can't let it out, or they feel that they've lost ability to create.
Learn to be comfortable with yourself.

there is lots of music. nearly every band from 1965-1979 with 1 surviving member is touring that same old music you love.
@Konservative Kirby There were great songs from the 80's, there were God-awful shit songs from the 80's. But one thing all of us in the debate of which era/decade was the best.... we agree that today's "sounds" are of 90% crap. I say "90%" because there is SOME music that comes about from talent, either with instruments or the voice, but it's rarely heard because stations and streaming steer towards the sucky, for some strange reason. Quality exists in the underground world.
I will add this thought: I wonder if my teen kids will in the year 2052 recollect the "10's" and "20's" as "the best music ever!"? That is a sobering thought. 😔

Nah, music is always the same. Popularity changes, that's all. You liked the music that was popular from 65 to 79. It came back in vogue in the early 90s for a minute. Rock is still there, it just isn't popular right now so the bulk of the money is being spent elsewhere.
Besides being a music legend (solo and with the Eagles) this guy is such an inspiration to anyone who's trying to kick a drug habit! He's the living proof that IT IS POSSIBLE!
This guy is a legend. It takes a lot of courage to admit publicly about the drug addiction especially being a celebrity.

I'm so impressed how Joe was able to overcome all that addiction when he could have chose to keep going having the money and connections.
I'm also a recovering addict and can honestly say that I don't know if I would have stopped if I had endless cash, dealers and cover. Mostly guys like Joe rarely had to deal with the law concerning drugs unless they did something else like crash a car and drugs were involved.
Otherwise there's no worry.
And he still did it.
That's how you know he really did it for himself.
You won't be successful unless it's for you.
As much as it should be for your loved ones, it still has to be for you.
It took awhile before I was sober for me.
Thankfully I didn't have the money to keep it going at first.
But it eventually comes if you stay with it.
Hardest damn thing to do.
If you haven't had a problem, don't even think about it.
Don't think you can party on for years and then just one day become sober like Joe.
Remember, he pointed out that most others are dead.
No doubt he's taking his second lease on life very serious.

Some get through the dizzy spell some don't but Joe Walsh did...thats what's important to me.
As the profiles of theses rockers emerge over time, I’m surprised about how many leaders of these groups stayed true to the art over alcohol and drugs. I’m referring to Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, Jon Bonjovi, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bob Segar, Mick Jaggar......others. I’m not saying they didn’t party it up too but they had firm idea of the limits. They knew they were running a business as well.

Ditto to all comments regarding this amazing person and music talent. The James Gang was some of the best blues rock you could hear. Last night in St Paul, was at the last show of the Farwell Tour. It was obvious what Walsh brought to an already talented group of musicians. Hard to think about Joe Walsh fully retiring. 😢 Hopefully not, unless it is what he needs to do. Thank you Joe Walsh!!!
its been said many times before by many people but using and abusing any drug is almost always pleasurable in the beginning and almost always painful in the end. Usually the people who use heavily are trying to escape. You keep on chasing a fleeting feeling that you can't catch again.

Back in about 1981 or so on a wintery Sunday morning up on Sugarloaf Mtn west of Boulder CO there was a knock on my door. I opened the door and there was Joe Walsh standing there asking me if I would help him get his Mercedes Benz out of the ditch in front of my house. He kind of looked like he'd just come from one of those "it's hard to leave when you can't find the door" parties he was famous for. Anyway, heck yeah I would help Joe Walsh dig his car out of the ditch. I used a shovel to dig down through the snow to solid ground and Joe rocked the car back forth using 'reverse' and 'drive' while i pushed and finally we got the car free from the ditch. Joe thanked me and drove on down Sugarloaf Road towards Boulder.

I went through my binge drinking phase. And what it does to your body is brutal. I can't believe liquor is completely legal and marijuana isn't. Yet
None of that stuff is a long term fix, but I agree.

it's legal here in Oregon and it's not perfect but MUCH safer than alcohol. When I was drinking I had gotten fatty liver by 31 and headed in a bad direction. Cannabis seems to have reversed it and I lost weight as well as doing well in school now. It's all about moderating it though and not everyone can. For some reason I couldn't moderate alcohol or others but can perfectly fine with cannabis.

its legal cuz alcohol helps fill the prisons and hospitals, as well as push a consumer market. Alcohol-money and desires, Weed-Nature and contentment

And not because "You can play that rock and roll" (Which you can, better than most) But because you are a man who LOVES what he does! Truly. Anyone watching you play couldn't miss it with a frickin BLINDFOLD Your drive to be the best at it only proves the point. My guess is you'll find that another 25 years of practice will get you there a LOT better then psychedelics and cocaine. (I have some experience with BOTH sides of the coin brother! p.s. He isn't best known for his guitar work for the Eagles. The Eagles are well known for somehow recruiting this genius to play guitar for them. Joe was a bigger deal in the world of music than the Eagles when they signed him up. Everybody made more money because of that decision. Respect!

I always thought the two Barnstorm albums in 72 and 73 were the best work Joe ever did. Just amazing.

A lot of us have lived that life, sadly, a lot of us aren't around anymore to tell the others not to live like that. I had so much fun starting out as a teen experimenting. the deeper I got into it, the harder it was to escape it. Lucky for me, I made it through without dying. I came close many, many, many times. Older now, I'm paying a price for escaping death. Glad to be around to see my children and grandchildren grow.

To me when u look at the man's face and his eyes, he just looked so burnt out and so far from reality, I'm surprised he managed to live as long as he did when he was doing drugs, I mean from the late 60s till 93? Jesus man, and from what I read on his last few years of using from 89-92, he had said that no one wanted to work with him, he was angry, upset, burnt all bridges and he had become unrecognizable even to himself and when I saw those pics of him with a friend of his, his face just looked so damn rough, he looked like he was on the verge of dying.

I went to a concert in Houston in the mid-70's. The lineup was Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Marshall Tucker Band, and Joe Walsh. Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker were fantastic! Joe Walsh was so bad, and so drunk, that we left after his second song.
I'm a big fan of Mr. Walsh, just listen to the very first James Gang record "Yer Album" it's killer throughout. What a guitarist and then he has such a great unique voice as well. Saw a solo show in '77 in Mobile and I did'nt have a clue what he was on but definetly he was flying quite high which made him so funny when he spoke, but when he played his songs he was right on it, wonderful show, he played a bit of a "Square Dance" tune 'cause he was in the deep south. Glad he found help before we lost him, will always love ya Joe!
yer album, think that s the one of him with his pet plant on the back...well that was fine for Joe, but I think it was the booze and of course coke that polished off the eagles, glad to see him in sobriety...btw, hendrix said Joe was one of his favorite guitarists along with terry kath
Thank God he got sober! He gave us so many great tunes. It's amazing that he was able to do what he did while being so out of control on drugs and alcohol.
There are lots of ways to get new experiences to inspire your art. It doesn't have to be drugs.

Thank God that Joe survived the personal hell he put himself in along with the physical damage done by drugs & alcohol. He, like so many of us from that era, we are blessed to not only survive, but to thrive! He is stronger & sounds better than in some of his most successful times. I was fortunate to meet Joe outside of the Rock & Roll circus; he was sitting in the local bar in mountain town I lived & just enjoyed the music of one of our local bands, one time he even played with them, but NEVER acted like he was someone special & wasn't treated as though he was either. Like the lyrics to one of his songs "I'm just an ordinary average guy"...

I got a friend who’s currently in the same shape joe use to be in. It’s true, you just let them keep going because sadly, they won’t listen. He had a heart attack a week ago and is only 43. I wonder if it’ll change him.
