My 21 yr. old son saw you at Guitar Center in Scottsdale about three years ago. Not being shy, he went up and talked to you. And, you talked back! He asked you about writing Rocky Mountain Way and you gave him some insight on it. Three weeks later we saw you in Nashville and a few months after that we saw you in Vegas at the epic Hotel California concert! My son has a story he will be telling the rest of his life. Thanks for that!

And it was Felder who favored and saved Joe in the band which was one of the reasons (not the major one though) why Band eventually broke up

The real story is that Felder created the most memorable guitar intro to the most memorable song on their most memorable album.....and Henly and Fry trreated him like nothing more than a session musician.
Walsh is incredibly talented and has earned his accolades, but " Hotel California " will always be Felders greatest contribution to classic rock history.

    • @a2ndopynyn
      @a2ndopynyn 3 года назад +144

Yep. The real reason the Eagles broke up is that Henley & Frey could never forgive Felder for writing their all-time best song. And he *did* write it; it's not just the intro, it's the verses as well, not to mention the ending solos, although I'm sure the chords were changed slightly here and there. The rest of the band contributed to the finished piece, of course, but it was Felder's baby. Henley & Frey's egos never got over it.

I'm not an Eagles fan at all but this song is astounding. Somehow it has the feel of an effortless jam whilst at the same time every note/beat/vocal sound is precision. It's a masterpiece of understatement and that's something many bands never master, or never master together at the same time.

It's not in my usual oeuvre - I listen to much harder, harsher stuff and electronica right on the hard cutting edge. But every now and then something transcends genres and rises above, and this is almost the epitome of that ascension.
What I love about it is that they didn't overblow anything. All it would take is one ott vocal line :(god, I hate yowling vocalists who have to make everything complicated. My pet peeve!) or any one of the guitar lines tipping into indulgence as was common at the time and it would be ruined. The balance is just immaculate. And on top of that there's the ambivalence; the listener interprets.
Of course music is subjective, but for me this is one of those rare songs that is immortal - it reflects its time but isn't constrained by it. Absolutely extraordinary. And get me, being all deep n meaningful - usually I'm just headbanging away ;-)

I've been reading articles with Joe Walsh interviews since the early 90s when I was learning to play guitar and his story has changed so much since then. Back then, it was "all Felder" as he would say before and he would say don't listen to Frey's and Henley's story as Felder was the one who made the whole song except the lyrics. It's really changed a lot since then and much has to do with him not wanting to hurt a steady paycheck with the Eagles and future upcoming tours.

Got on an elevator In Vegas and Joe was on it. Nobody knew it was him except me and he knew I knew who he was. I was shaking from excitement with the biggest smile on my face. Nobody was looking at the big rock star, they were looking at me loosing my mind and trying to keep it together.
He just stood there all cool and got off the elevator like a regular dude.
As soon as the doors closed
I screamed " OH MY FUCKING GOD THAT WAS JOE FUCKING WALSH"
Nobody understood what just happened to them. Amazing.
Everyone e just wanted to get as far away from me as possible because I was losing my mind. It took every bit of self control I had not to say anything to him, but he knew I knew and he just stared at me , like
"Be cool dude, don't lose yer shit in an elevator" closest to a rock GOD I have ever been to.
    Same freaking elevator in Vegas.

      All nostalgia influenced, really.
      I was raised on 50s and 60s.
(My folks were old when they had me...so in the early days The Platters, Buddy Holly, and Roy Orbison was my jam. Billy Stewart too.) Then became a Beatles obsessive (still am.)
Turned onto classic 70s by a girl I liked in high school. (Zeppelin, baby.)
And later, in college developed a taste for cocaine and 80s music...no correlation, I'm sure.)
But the 90s are special in a way that only the music of your own generation can be.
I love the Beatles, Floyd, Zeppelin, Orbison, Holly, Chuck Berry...all of it, still. But it isn't my generation. It can take me back to where I was, but unless I find another weirdo outcast, it doesn't take me with anyone else.
But Foo Fighters, Butthole Surfers, Oasis, that cute hipster chick with the glasses, and Blur...Hoottie, for christ's sake. All 90s kids know Hootie (I lived in South Carolina at the time, Charleston, and my old man worked at a bar they would come up from Savannah and play. And he introduced me to Hootie one night when I was with him for the weekend. (I been hanging out in bars since I was in diapers 😆. Different time.)
There is just so many memories all born out of 90s music. It has to take the lead for me.
      But to each their own.
      My first concert though...Ray Charles.
Ultimately I suppose it is impossible to award any decade as being the best.
      20th Century beats all.
I'll take Al Jolson over most contemporary music.
      😆

I grew up in Southern California. Born in '59, I was too young for Woodstock but knew the tunes and the climate musically from the '60's. The early '70's was a continuation of the '60's but more of the excess and lifestyle. The Eagles would have never been without Linda Ronstadt. But we didn't know that until 40+ yrs later. They were just there like the California sunshine... always on the air... KLOS, KMET... I guess I never knew just how big and influential they were until sometime late in 1980 when I found myself in Holland on a Mormon mission. I was spending the night away from where I was living (in Den Helder) at a row house in Alkmaar. I couldn't sleep very well, and it was very, very late. I was still adjusting to being so far away from everything I knew when... through the walls from next door, I heard the muffled sounds of Hotel California! The whole album!! It was great, really. I suppose I had a notion people there knew "our" music. But in those days, the California scene and the music that came out of it wasn't as ubiquitous then as now. The New Wave sound out of England ( think The Police etc) was more typical. So like music to my ears (pun intended!) I listened joyfully to The Eagles that night in Alkmaar Holland! I guess, even after many years in The Netherlands and travel to England, Poland and as far east as Belarus... it still amazes me that their sound, their music has had such an influence on the whole world. If you want to see the hotel pictured on the album cover, you'd have to go to Beverly Hills CA and visit The Beverly Hills Hotel just off Sunset Boulevard and Beverly Drive. Sort of a weird intersection. But I agree with Joe here. The whole State was the hotel the song is about. People moved to California from ALL OVER. By the end of the decade and into the '80's, people were sporting bumper stickers that said, "Welcome to California. Now go home!" I sometimes wish they'd gone too. Such a mess now. I've been in Utah over 30 yrs now. But it was a beautiful time to be alive and young in LA once upon a time... echt waar!

While cooking Sunday breakfast and listening to music, Hotel California came on. My son suddenly cranks it up and says Dad I like this song, then he went silent. He was quiet the whole time totally tuned in focused on nothing but the song. Hotel California is a fine composition in many ways and still captivates listeners of all ages decades later. Thank you for your great talent that will always shine on as long as the human race exists. ❤️

Hotel California is the unofficial National Anthem of Thailand! I’ve been there 10 times over the past 35 years and you’ll still hear it being played and performed by solo performers and rock bands in clubs, including high school bands etc. I saw a rock band composed of teenagers at a street festival do a great cover of it. I’m just amazed at how much the Thais really love this song. Last time I was there was in 2019, just before the Pandemic, and I heard it many times while there.

@@Eugene_Sucks Some do. I guess they love the sound of it. The lyrics don’t make much sense even to Native English speakers. Fans have been trying to decipher the lyrics for decades. Each person has their own ideas about what the lyrics mean. The Rev. The Rev. Jerry Falwell interpreted it to be all about Satanism. The Eagles themselves described the song as their interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles. In 2013 Don Henley said the song was about “A journey from innocence to experience… that’s all.”

Speakers in all 4 corners of the bus. We listened to The Eagles almost every day going to school. We were the only bus who had that going on, and we thought it was the coolest thing.

Oh, Joe Walsh. You guys will be remembered! The first time I heard the "dueling guitar" riff at the end of H.C., with the studio fade ending, I was thinking "this is impossible, I've never heard such a riot of music . . . this is impossible stuff!" I have loved it ever since, and I never tire of hearing it. I saw you guys at Stagecoach several years ago (the warm up act was John Fogerty!) . . . Oh, what a night! As I recall, the last song was Desperado, which is another Eagle anthem, worlds apart from Hotel California.

Joe, I want to thank you,,and the Eagles for this song. I was in rehab,at the end of my treatment, another and my self started the day with writing a line from that song. That was early November of 1991, at Edwin Shaw,in Akron, and have been sober ever since. That line, "you can checkout anytime, BUT YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE" fits to a tee, my drinking addiction. Thank you We miss you. I must admit, the Draughthouse, James Gang, Glass Harp, and the Counterpoints, were fun,of what I can recall LOL.

I can't recall which one I went to, but I know we each saw one heck of a performance. Linda Ronstadt was their opening act. Me and my best girl, (now wife of 56 years), were waaay up in the balcony Stage left. To this day, one of the very best concerts we ever attended. Cheers!
