@@integral Do you know that the highest grossing album of the eagles is "Their Greatest hits"? The songs from that album were produced before Felder joined the Eagles. No one can deny Felder is an exceptional player, even Henley can attest to that. But being a good player does not mean one can compose great music all by himself. Yes, he did started some eagles songs but it was the magic of Henley and Frey made them great. Felder himself said that. Felder did not have any success with his solo effort even with the help of other famous musicians while Henley and Frey are very successful with their solo careers.
Don Felder's acoustic solo in the live version of "Hotel California" was fabulous. His flamenco-style interpretation was fantastic. Had no idea he was so versatile a player.
Felder briefly mentions "Victim of Love" in this interview and that tune is CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED in my opinion. It has one of the best opening guitar riffs ever. It should be as iconic as the opening of "Smoke on the Water" is. It really is a masterpiece of guitar work. Felder was the key to the Eagles more "rock and roll" sound, and what Henley and Frey did to him is truly despicable. I was born in 1988 so I was too young to ever see the Eagles live when Felder was still with them. I did get to see them in Cleveland on their "History of the Eagles" tour in 2013 and I enjoyed it immensely. That was just three years prior to the death of Glenn Frey and while I would've LOVED to have been able to see Felder and Walsh play Hotel California together LIVE like they did in the 70's, I am still thankful that I saw one of the greatest bands in human history prior to the death of one of their most important members.
I agree that victim of love is beyond underrated. First time I heard it I assumed it was one of their well known songs, but nope. Barely any recognition

Eagles ... one of my all time favorites. I remember when their music "new". I'm 70 now and and I have their music and still listen to it, just as I did way back then ... loudly!
Felder joining the Eagles is like when Mick Taylor joined the Stones. Gave both groups guitar virtuosity just when they really needed it. Played in the peak period for both groups.
It was at Lipham Music on Saturday morning. Tommy came in at 10:00, my lesson was at 10:30. Way back then Don wasn’t famous yet. We hung out at the music store all the time. He was 4 years older than us and really had no reason to humor us. We had no money to buy expensive guitars and we were all just learning our first chords. Don charged $10.00 for a 30 minute lesson. Taught me the minor pentatonic scale. Don was always very giving of his time and talent.
It would have been nice if Tom Petty had turned out to be a good guitar player. But instead he became a titan of mediocrity. His music and vocals are the middle bun in a Big Mac. Billions sold, but not very good.
John Case Is that why he sold millions then? If he was mediocer (in your view) then why aren’t you and I famous? I’ve been playing for over 20 years. I master all songs by the guitar Gods your Claptons, Hendrixes, who not? I have a computer hard-disk full of ideas I’ve never heard elsewhere. You can even whistle me a song for 3 sec and I will in most cases understand the entire song structure. I don’t know you or if you even play but maybe you are good too. So why aren’t we famous? Because talent is 10% the other 90 is soooooooooooooooooooooo being lucky and being at the right place at the freaking right millisecond.

Hotel California was a phenomenal song, both the lyrics and the music. I was lucky enough to see the Eagles play in the mid '70's and they brought the house down! Thanks guys, you rocked!
I have a great Hotel California story from the late summer of 1976. For reasons that need not be gone into, I had hitch-hiked into NYC (from Detroit) visiting it for the first time as a 17 year old. I didn't have enough money for a NYC hotel room so I basically just stayed out all night the first night (and slept near a police station outside in Central Park the second). Well that first night I ended up in the legendary bar Max's Kansas City and was sitting at the bar nursing a drink when the title cut "Hotel California" came over the sound system. The song was still wildly popular back in Detroit but here in the fashionable site for original music there was AN AUDIBLE AND UNIVERSAL GROAN that filled the bar from how over-played ad nauseam the song had become. It was a moment I will never forget. Just how far away the NYC club scene was to the pop-music radio play back in Detroit, and I suspect, most of the nation at the time.
Don is a gentleman and a very nice human being...I've had replies to messages a few years ago ..nice that he took the time to have a conversation with a fan from UK ..I'll be forever grateful and proud I had a convo with one legend I've always loved..thank you Don x
I was looking forward to hearing that demo too! I had no idea he still had it on tape. Amazing. God man, I wish I had a small cassette recorder back in the 80`s , when I was noodling around, and came up with a riff that I knew was special, but after even a few hours ,it had lost some small detail that I had been playing when I first woke up, to the evening when I would try it out on peoples ears. Oh well!
I've heard it. It is his part of the song. And, by the way, also sounds like a nice set of finger exercises. It's a lovely sequence of arpeggios. Certainly better than you'd find in an book for advanced practice. But there was still a lot of writing to do. From watching the Eagles documentary I'd say that each member was expected to contribute their own part to some extent. It's the lyrics and transition and other arranging that seemed to be up to Don and Glen for most pieces. I think he'd had a better argument if he had picked one issue. Instead he was also wanting to take lead singing for one song on that album. Watching the documentary gave me a new perspective on everything that was going on.
I could listen and watch Don Felder talk for hours. He is such a nice man, and tells the story well. So where was the cassette tape of his orginal demos?
It is a very good duel. But not the best . They took this idea from the originators of this technique, Wishbone Ash, who their producer saw in a studio. You want great guitar, check them out
This guy is so smart and articulate. I am just in awe of his playing, he just seems like he would be a great guy to have a beer with. I could listen to his stories all day long....
Don it's funny, I've always thought there was no way you wrote this in Bm, I am glad to know the story behind it now! I sat down as a 15 year old on my Fender Strat 25 years ago, and learned note for note the Hotel solo much as you did, and was AMAZED the entire way through, one of rock music's crowning achievements, very much deserving to be up there with Stairway and Crossroads. Eagles sold out to Joe, and gave you the cold shoulder, but you alone elevated the entire band to new levels with your contributions.
Hey Don Felder, Thank you so much for your music, playing and your songwriting......Wow! As much as Henley from the Beagles says Blah. Blah. Blah, they still end every show with your tune! Well done sir! well done.... indeed!! Music always wins!!!
I’ve read more than a few of “rock stars” autobiography’s and the thing I like most about Felder’s is he still comes across as humble in his book. Yes, there is what a-lot of people would consider “dirt” on the band, but most of it was already well known by the time his book came out, and even after all the issues with Don and Glenn, and after the lawsuit was settled, he still was/is more than willing to forgive and live and let live and honestly miss playing with , and be willing to play with those guys. It’sjust such a shame the other camp didn’t feel that way, wasn’t willing to sit down and talk it over, apologize for any hard feelings , shake hands and be open or willing to play or work with each other again. It’s now to late for Glenn, but Henley could sit down with Felder, let each other get it off there chest and put it behind them. Felder was a huge part of that band. Even if the lyric writers don’t believe it. They haven’t really done squat without him. 😞
I just added this book to my list of books to buy~Don Felder sounds like a wonderful man… especially as people comment on Glenn Frey & Don Henley. Was fortunate to see them in Toronto, Ontario 🇨🇦.
What a great story of how collaboration should work. Inspiration, communication, compromise. The band transposing the tune down to accommodate the vocals. Don is such an interesting and talented individual. Thank you for sharing your abilities with the world.
Think I heard somewhere the band called him “Fingers” or something like that? A testament to his virtuosity. So sad when a team of superstars together can’t stay in their lanes and recognize each other’s contribution to the “magic.” Happens a lot in bands, but also in sports and other businesses. ✌🏻🎼

These interviews are great. You edit so we hear just the answers + also hear you interview folks and sit back and let them talk with no interruptions. Great stuff. Thank you.
Felder has exceptional talent but, as with the Eagles, sometimes you give more than you receive in order to do what you love. He definitely showed his humility by giving credit to Henley where it was due after all the bad blood. It is amazing that he and Joe Walsh would jam with Duane Allman at different times in their lives. Both took impromptu direction from Duane on playing slide. Joe Walsh has a glass slide that Duane gave him that he never takes out in public. The Eagles didn't do any better than Hotel California and they still made great music when they were playing live but it was never as good after Felder left.
Felder never gets enough appreciation as a guitarist. There's some videos of him and Joe Walsh ripping through time and space during Turn To Stone on some of the late 70s tours.
If anyone wants to hear about these songs and / or the birth of songs etc of the Eagles should watch “the history of the eagles”. They interview the band, all members, and gets their versions of what happened to the band and members. Best 3 hours you can spend if you’re an eagles fan
That is true but he carried his weight after being given the opportunity and they would not be the band they are without his contributions. Thanks for watching... Joe
The chord progression came Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull written in 1969 The Eagles supported Jethro Tull around that time The song is called ‘thing’s we used to know’ worth checking out
Hotel California is a fantastic song/melody, one of the best ever made. However, the architecture of the song - even the fragments of solo’s is the same - is made by Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. They played together, JT as a supporting act at Eagles concerts. The Eagles might not even remembered this at that time, but it definitely the same. Ian Anderson once said that he was honored that The Eagles made a hit of his master piece and he is not the kind of man to start a copyright case. He just let them. Bravo !

Agreed,,, just the Best
The Eagles were lucky to have Don Felder and Randy Meisner
I think its the other way around. Both of them are nothing before and after the Eagles.
@@assitch6693 You mean you think Frey and Henley were as strong musically as Felder and didn't need his skills? Seriously?
@@integral Do you know that the highest grossing album of the eagles is "Their Greatest hits"? The songs from that album were produced before Felder joined the Eagles. No one can deny Felder is an exceptional player, even Henley can attest to that.
But being a good player does not mean one can compose great music all by himself. Yes, he did started some eagles songs but it was the magic of Henley and Frey made them great. Felder himself said that.
Felder did not have any success with his solo effort even with the help of other famous musicians while Henley and Frey are very successful with their solo careers.
@@assitch6693 It's a greatest hits album, of course it will sell more. Their best studio album was with Felder in the band.
@@hernanbusso1609 My point is that the Eagles were already big before Felder joined. Plus Long road out of Eden made 7x Platinum without Felder
Don Felder's acoustic solo in the live version of "Hotel California" was fabulous. His flamenco-style interpretation was fantastic. Had no idea he was so versatile a player.
Don is pure class. For all that Henley and Frey did to him, he can still barely complete a sentence without smiling.
He just seems like a great, happy guy. Someone most people would love to hang out with.
yes he's a real guy not so much the other manipulating clowns like jack bruce.
The best revenge is living well…and rich.
I would so much like to see Don back in the band, he belongs there. Come on, Henley, don't worry about the $$$, you got plenty !!!
What did Henley and Frey do to him?
Felder is most definitely the bigger MAN.He is more secure with his masculinity and talent. You go Don!!!.!
that guitar solo on One Of These Nights... one of the best EVER!
That's true - he ain't just playing rock or funk or blues, he has his own blend of musicality, a rare gift :)
Don't forget his work on "I can't tell you why" I close my eyes listen to it and make me fell like I am floating.
So heart warming, parkin can you feel the vibrational shock from the music 🎵🎶😄💋💋❤️
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Johnny….Joe
I agree that victim of love is beyond underrated. First time I heard it I assumed it was one of their well known songs, but nope. Barely any recognition
One of the absolute best songs . And yes it's been underrated. Sad
Don is the best, I’ve met him a few times and a nicer guy in the business you will not find
I love Hotel California!🤗 We're huge fans of classic rock and so grateful we were able to grow up with all this fabulous music! One thing that has always impressed me about the Eagles was their ability to tell a story with their music! Thank you for all the memories!😍
He’s such a great musician and always seems so humble and kind. Too bad his bandmates didn’t wholeheartedly give him the credit he deserved. I personally rank it as the best classic rock song of all time. Thanks
He is very well credited on Hotel California. His name is the first one to be mentioned. Unfortunately, he wants all the credit.
I got to see Felder do the solo with Tommy Shaw when he opened for Styx. It was incredible!
What Felder created is the signature musical masterpiece for the Eagles entire career......and that must drive Henley mad.
Man, I just enjoy stories like this so much. Kind of getting the perspective of the creator of such an iconic song. True artist with talent that is rare and appreciated.
Felder is one Class Act!!!

It was so cool to hear Don tell the story of how "Hotel California" came to be. This Eagle's song will live on forever!
He's right to be proud of writing one of the best songs in rock history. Thank goodness Henley recognized it for what it was.
He didn't write the song. That was Henley & Frey. Don created the basic format and the guitar tracks. The iconic song was a group effort.
@@jeffsymons4535 Even if Frey and Henley didn't write it? They would say that they did. Henley was the song writer. Frey "co-wrote" and rode on coat tails. Bob Seger encouraged Frey to write songs but in my opinion Frey never really got the knack. Bob Seger sure did.

I really like Don Felder.
The Eagles' songs stand the test of time and Hotel California blew me away the first time I heard it--I still love jamming along with it an playing the solo because it just makes me feel good. Thanks Don and Don for this and all the other great tunes.
I was at that same Indian Casino where Don Felder gave a concert for maybe 200 people. Wow.wow it was fantastic and what a talent. Such a nice guy. I can’t imagine what the problem was between Frey and Felder. Met him after the concert, what a humble human being. He’s a gift to the world.
Eagles ... one of my all time favorites. I remember when their music "new". I'm 70 now and and I have their music and still listen to it, just as I did way back then ... loudly!
NG B me too! Every time I go to work it kicks me into work mode!
how can one be so gracious to people who have been so mean? Don Felder is truly one in a million.
because he's not really gracious and they haven't been as mean to him as he lets on?
i'm going to throw up all over myself.
Felder joining the Eagles is like when Mick Taylor joined the Stones.
Gave both groups guitar virtuosity just when they really needed it. Played in the peak period for both groups.
“Don felder “ what a great human being.
One of Don Felders guitar students back in Gainesville Florida was a skinny young kid by the name of Tom Petty
Kenneth Player that is cool as shit
It would have been nice if Tom Petty had turned out to be a good guitar player. But instead he became a titan of mediocrity.
His music and vocals are the middle bun in a Big Mac. Billions sold, but not very good.
John Case The middle bun in a Big Mac. 👍🏻

He got crapped on by those other guys. He’s a killer guitarist.

The music establishment, the way it's layed out always seems to want to separate artists . Great Bands ( and it takes all the players) have been plagued by ( hey you're better than that , you should go solo ) type stuff and some of it goes to their heads . Promise's of better money and not as stressful etc. Sad , it takes all the guys to make the magic. There's an old saying " you're only as good as the guys you play with. " I guess some wanted to get better and some thought they were. Either way , that's how we loose the originals . I never tried to separate Felder from Henley, Frey, Walsh or Meissner . They were THE EAGLES. Today the best song they have is Busy Being Fabulous. My opinion and I'll keep it. Thanks for the post

I love the Eagles all band members. Hotel CA takes me back to my teenage years being for SoCal hits home.

Dammit, we didn't get to hear the original demo on Felder's computer!
Ffs! The most important aspect of the story, mentioned even!!, and they leave it out. I could slap the shit out of someone.

I read Dons autobiography 'Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles.' He tells that story in the book. A fascinating book.

The chord progression came Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull written in 1969
The Eagles supported Jethro Tull around that time
The song is called ‘thing’s we used to know’ worth checking out
Hotel California is a fantastic song/melody, one of the best ever made. Bravo !
Was Felder with the Eagles in 1969 though?
