hmmm not bad, especially since I'd never record at 60 fps that long in any mode. Hoping Canon will give us an update were other modes don't take away from the 4k modes. Thanks for doing this!
Hey Bob! This is exactly what i was waiting for! thanks for this test. This is interesting as another only got 31 mins in 4k before overheating. If you can shoot 50 mins and keep using in bursts then the R6 could be usable in on a project and changes things entirely. I was wondering if the 4k 60fps could be used on a reas estate video and this test gives me some hope. Although i do feel we should all still presure canon to improve it even more with another firmware.
I've been wondering the same thing and ran a similar test to this, but intentionally only shot in 20-60 second bursts like I would in a Real Estate shoot. My total shoot time ended up being about 35 minutes before I got to the point of overheating. The overheat timer does a good job in between clips of telling you how much recording time you have left before overheating, at which point I was able to shut the camera down for a few minutes at a time and then fire it back up a shoot a few more minutes. The only thing that makes me nervous about this camera is that once you get to the limit, you reach a point where all video modes are unavailable - even the 1080p ones. You just have to shut the camera down and wait. On the flip side, I was able to shoot from a cool camera in 1080p for a very long time and never got an overheat warning.
Several people are testing the R6 with a fan now, and surprisinfly it really adds up more recording time available. Might be possible in the future to not have any overheating problems at all if you would attach the tilta fan cage for example.
pointing a fan at the body won't cool the internals at all. its akin to pointing a fan at a pc case to cool the cpu. the overheating seems to be artificial and mostly software based
Hello, can you send me a fan test connection for the R6? I've been looking for it. I can't find it. I especially wanted to know if the fan would work on the R6.
I'm not sure but I can tell you that in an earlier test that was in a different spot where it was in the same room with a window unit air conditioner I did not get as frequent shutdowns. basically I didn't get any shutdowns in that test, but I was frequently toggling the start/stop to see how many projected minutes I had left so not sure if that help avoid the shutdowns. I would need to try to recreate that test.
Yes I remember hearing that too. Though there been a bunch of firmware updates since then so I'm not sure how much that still applies. Also honestly I shoot in 4K very little compared to HD because the 4K footage is so hard to edit that I have to transcode into something like ProRes or cineform. Meaning already huge files are now doubled in size cuz I have to make another copy.
Thanks for sharing! Excited for fw 1.2.0 which we will be able to download
Any idea when it is supposed to be available?

That squares with an earlier test I did in a cooler room. I basically killed a battery without ever overheating.
I have been looking for R6 fan test, but I only see someone do R5 test, R5 plus fan effect is very good, R6 seems no one tested.

Mr H but the firmware update has caused this “artificial” problem to be solvable by hardware. As I said, a fan helps.
What were your ambient temps while doing this test?

Hey! I have read that the timer also counts down even when you are in stills more, is that true?

@@BobbyD262 Thanks for reply! I was also wondering if you used the sandisk extreme pro UHS-1 V30?
@@peterp7736 not sure the exact model. but I believe sandisk only makes 1 type of black label 512gb sd card.
@@BobbyD262 I think so. I only was wondering because they recommend a V90 card for 4k60
does it make any difference if you set the screen to turn off after 15 seconds?
Not sure, but I doubt I would ever film that way.
