Another thing I've noticed is how Jade is seen as a freak because of her love for strange and creepy things, and Cat is seen as weird because of strange things she does and mild craziness. Maybe because of this, not many people accepted them, so they could bond over it, and eventually became best friends.

In “Freak the Freak Out Part 1” Haley flirts with Beck and Cat informs Haley that Beck is spoken for. Cat was standing up to the homewrecker.

Not to forget that Cat doesn't really see any real threat in Jade, though she screams a bit, no matter how badly Jade tries to scare her nor does she gets upset over it. Cat once cried and logged out of the video chat, when Tori yelled at her for not concentrating on the play at hand. But the same Cat never runs away from Jade or gets too upset or scared, when Jade yells at her. She even had the audacity to call Jade bossy and repeat it even after being yelled at. This shows how comfortable she is with Jade. Another reason why I love them so much!

I wrote a fanfic about this a while back.
I would like to point out that Ariana and Liz were both in the Original Broadway cast of 13 (the Musical), so off screen they've worked together before and most likely came into Victorious being close friends. Obviously not every show works with pre-existing dynamics co-stars might have, but here I think it was something that was though about when it came to Jade and Cat's interactions and what type of friendship these 2 characters would have.

Another thing I’ve noticed is how whenever Jade distracts cat, for example by giving her a little coloring book and crayons, by handing her some shiny keys, or by telling her to go make friends with the nice lady at the front desk, it’s normally after cat mentions some crazy story about her brother. Cat clearly has some sort of “issues” (In that scene where she meets Robbies grandma, I think, she says “my hair color has nothing to do with my psychological problems” or something like that. Plus she grew up with an older influence who she probably looked up to growing up and he spent a lot of his time in “special hospitals”. Don’t forget that scene where Jade and Beck are fighting in the janitors closet and Cat is freaking out with her hands over her ears telling herself that she is under her bed, and then she faints.. so she must have some sort of childhood trauma or something from home.). Jade must know this from being her best friend and all, and probably just doesn’t want her to think about it too much, so she distracts Cat when she remembers stuff on her brother. I mean why else would Jade carry around a coloring book.
My theory is that Jade hangs out with cat so much because cat reminds her of maybe who she used to be, or who she wishes she could be
maybe she reminds her of how she was as a child before her family issues affected her. or maybe she sees cat as refreshing since she’s so unbelievably innocent, unlike so many other people around her, since she questions people’s motives a lot

The girl part was so important. In “The Worst Couple” Beck discovers that Tori invited Andre, Robbie and Cat over to her house and did not invite Beck, because Beck would have insisted on Jade coming. When Beck makes a statement that even their friends don’t want to hang out with them, Jade says that Tori isn’t her friend, no one likes Trina, she only tolerates Robbie and Cat is basically a pet. I don’t know what that last one means. Notice that she did not mention Andre. Andre must be Jade’s friend.
It only makes sense that Cat would be Jade’s only real girlfriend. Tori isn’t Jade’s friend and no one likes Trina.

I mostly saw how much these two loved each other despite the abuse jade inflicts. They also have a lot in common.
When cat gave jade the scissors as a secret Santa gift, her eyes light up not just because of her obsession with scissors, but because it came from a friend who thought of her.
Also, they enjoy singing together and doing stuff together. Jade will do drop everything to help cat and cat will return the favor.

Watching this video made me think of this potential theory. Considering both Jade and Cat are implied to have poor home lives, what if Jade (who may have had the worse of the two) sees Cat as the innocence she lost and, by hanging out with her, she can re-experience that innocence and help Cat retain it, so Cat doesn’t have to endure the type of relationship Jade grew up with? Jade needs a girlfriend. Andre is a good friend, but there are certain things a girl has to talk about with another girl. Jade doesn’t like Trina and Tori is not Jade’s friend. That only leaves Cat.
Beck frequently treats Cat like a little sister, protecting her and making it a point to comfort her. Even though Beck and Cat may be very good friends, there is no chance of any romantic relations there. Beck likes smart girls, so Jade doesn’t view Cat as a threat, like she views Tori.

I have a theory about how the gang, sans Tori, become friends in the first place.
According to my theory, it all started with Cat. It was two years before the first episode. Cat, Jade, Andre and Beck all had a class together (notice that I didn't mention Robbie or Trina, I'll get to that). For that class, Cat, Jade, Beck and Andre were all partners for a group project. The four of them had a lot of fun doing this project. It was a bonding experience. Beck and Andre became close guy friends. Beck’s parents probably disliked Jade and Beck decided to date Jade just to spite his parents. There was probably a casual conversation during which Beck said that he values intelligence in a woman. For that reason, it is pretty much understood that Cat wouldn’t have a chance with Beck. Because Jade really needs a girlfriend and Cat, being ditsy, would not have a chance with Beck, Jade views Cat is a friend who won’t steal Beck from her and couldn’t steal Beck from her, even if she wanted to. Andre got along with Beck and the girls, because Andre is just an all around likable guy.
While Cat had that one class with Jade, Andre and Beck, there was a different class that Cat had with Robbie. Robbie was probably helping Cat with her homework a lot. Cat and Robbie likely bonded over the fact that they both have a great deal of psychological problems. Robbie was being bullied. Cat felt bad for him and when she tried to stand up for him, all that she got was bullied too. Cat decided to enlist the help of her new friends, Andre, Jade and Beck, to protect Robbie from being bullied.
Andre met Trina, when Trina had a part in a musical show case, singing a song that Andre wrote. I am talking about the song “Make It Shine,” which Trina was supposed to sing in the pilot episode. After Tori was added to the gang, Trina, despite being liked by no one, was an honorary member of the gang, due to the fact that she is Tori's sister.
I also find it fitting that both real life actors are besties, so there’s that.

In my opinion, I really like them as a couple. Jade and Cat being so accepting of each other and are good at bringing out the missing qualities ( Cat’s need for a backbone/emotional support and Jade’s need for stability and trust and mutual Love ) in each other is something I really like about their dynamic. Jade has a major soft spot for Cat and often protects her and will do things to make her Happy her ( driving her to San Diego, having sleepovers ) while Cat knows Jade so well and is always there to support her and also do things that’ll make her Happy ( buying the prop from The Scissoring, helping her get props for her plays, etc. )
Maybe it’s just my lesbian self who has a Love for “Sun and Moon”/“Reserved Bitter Person falls for Outgoing Happy Energetic Person” dynamics or maybe it’s the fact that their friendship ( from Jade’s perspective ) is very different than any other and genuinely wholesome, Loving and actually good at times- I think they’d work well as a couple. *Also just wanna remind people of the fact that in the Sam and Cat Episode ‘The Killer Tuna Jump’ in order to get back at Sam for stealing her “best friend” she immediately tries to…”get close to” Freddy despite that being Sam’s ex boyfriend, not just a friend, and I think that’s saying something…*

Tori is really kind and nice like Cat, while at the same time, she is also smart, tough and assertive like Jade. Tori is ethically complex and questionable. That is exactly what an entertaining, thought provoking and deep sit com needs in a series protagonist.
Tori is all about self improvement and she is down to earth. There are two episodes in season one, where Tori is established as being bad at playing instruments, these two season one episodes are “Beck’s Big Break” and “Stage Fighting.” By the season three episode “Tori Goes Platinum,” Tori knows how to play piano. Clearly, Tori is determined to make herself better. In “Terror on Cupcake Street” we find out that Tori is an honors student. Despite these facts, Tori seldom talks about how talented she is.
Tori wants to be part of everything and she hates being left out. That, on its own, is not a bad thing. When this trait of her’s becomes dangerous and border line toxic is when she looses her temper if things don’t go the way she wants them to. In “The Bird Scene” when Tori fails to realize what the secret of the Bird Scene is, she attempts to torture the information out of Cat. That lesson that Sikowitz taught Tori about self-confidence was one that Tori needed. Tori appears to be a people pleaser. In “Stage Fighting” Tori lets Jade get away with wrongly accusing Tori of something that Tori did not actually do. I understand if Tori did not think it was important for Jade to get in trouble, but why would Tori be okay with getting in trouble herself? It would seem to me that Tori is desperate for approval.
Tori is a great friend, she shows unwavering loyalty to pretty much everyone. In “Andre’s Horrible Girl,” Tori has the situational awareness to recongize that Andre’s new girlfriend Hope is making Andre miserable and advises Andre that the chance to get close to Hope’s father is not worth an emotionally unsatisfying relationship. Recognizing that Jade has some daddy issues, Tori advises Jade to show her play to her father, this happens in the episode “Wok Star.”
Tori’s primary character trait is being an opportunistic thinker. This trait can either lead to good actions or bad actions, depending on the situation. In the very first scene of the pilot episode, Tori is with Ian, a kid from Sherwood, working on a science project. After Tori enrolls in Holloywood Arts, we never see Ian again and we never find out what happened with that project. In “Cat’s New Boyfriend” we learn that Tori’s ex-lover Daniel did not know that she transferred to Hollywood Arts. This indicates that Tori bid the Irish goodbye to many of her fellow students from Sherwood. When people disagree with Tori, she can become short tempered and bossy, though Tori’s short tempered bossy attitude is not quite as bad as Jade’s. This opportunistic thinking is also the main reason why Tori is great at coming up with solutions. In “Jade dumps Beck” Tori plays cupid for Jade and Beck. In “The Great Ping Pong Scam” Tori comes up with the plan to perform a song, so as to make up for the check that the gang could not pay. Because Tori was not dressed to impress, she borrowed Jade’s dress. That was brilliant. In “The Diddly Bops” Tori convinces Andre to play a song for some music producers.
Let’s address the two elephants in the room, the ping pong scam and Tori kissing guys who are in relationships. For both of these, my response is that Tori appears to have turned over a new leaf. In the pilot episode, when Jade and Tori first meet, Tori is cleaning stuff off of Beck. This causes Jade to get jealous and completely over react by pouring coffee on Tori. Tori retaliates by kissing Beck, as part of an alphabetical improv. In “Cat’s New Boyfriend,” Tori kisses Daniel, while Daniel is dating Cat. Tori apologizes for kissing Daniel. Tori and Jade are constant frienemies. In the later seasons, Jade and Tori grow closer. Even though Jade and Beck are broken up, Tori refuses to kiss Beck out of loyalty to Jade. Clearly, Tori has developed as a character. Besides, what Tori does to Jade is no where near as bad the horrible things that Jade does to Tori. As for the ping pong scam, the whole scam started before Tori came along. When Tori discovered the truth, she black mailed the rest of the gang into letting her join the fake team. This was unethical of Tori. Weather or not Tori black mailing the rest of the gang into letting her join the fake team was as bad as the rest of the gang orchestrating the scam in the first place is debatable. Because the ping pong scam was never again mentioned after that one episode where it was established, I am going to assume that the scam was discontinued after the incident with the check they couldn’t pay. Personally, I would have loved it if, after Tori discovered the truth about the scam, she had made a deal with Jade to keep the scam a secret, if Jade agreed to discontinue the scam.
Tori’s friendship with Robbie is interesting. Tori has her moments of being rude to Robbie, such as when he is hit with a drone and she basically celebrates. Despite these few moments of rude and disrespectful behavior, Tori does seem to care about Robbie. In fact, Tori’s crowing achievement in the morality department was when she donated blood to save Robbie’s life in “Tori Gets Stuck.”

I have a feeling their closeness was also probably influenced by the cast in some way, seeing as Liz and Ariana are very good friends and had been for a number of years before victorious began due to being in the musical 13 together. It's not necessarily an in-show reason but I feel like it plays a part in the dynamic they developed for the characters
When Cat told off the girls then looked to Jade for approval, I read that more as a Jade trying to get Cat to stand up for herself more. Cat clearly sees Jade as a strong figure and maybe she just wants to be more like her.
I have a theory of why Cat and Jade were close. In real life lots of creepy, and uncomfortable things happened to the actors in the show bc of the creator and everyone who supported him. Jade's actress was protective of Cat's actress (theres video proof as well). Just spitballin here

I love the Jade/Cat relationship; Jade protects Cat, and Cat protects Jade. It's a strong sisterly bond, albeit weird at times. Gotta love the polar opposite relationships.

I feel like jade hangs out with cat because both of them come from troubled homes so they r very understanding they may be complete opposites but jade is like cats guardian jade clearly cares about cat and that’s why I think the two should stay friends

I used to have a friendship like Cat & Jade's in the past. Trust me, the only way that the two of them are that close is that they must have known each other for YEARS. Maybe they met in middle school since we can know that they didn't meet as kids. Just a thought.
it’s sort of like what pandora is to effy and vice versa (skins). pandora/cat is this childish sort of positive and happy persona whereas effy/jade is this persona where pain and anguish and very real life pain is represented. when you put them together they’re polar opposites who totally compliment each other. they’re comfort for each other. pandora/cat give effy/jade this sort of representation of true innocent happy childhood that they never really had and for effy/jade they can protect cat/pandora and their naivety.

I've always absolutely loved Jade, but I get how mean and toxic she is watching it now. The contrast hits harder with Cat around. I think your analysis here is really good though, and it certainly convinces me that they're best friends and like sisters.
I think the part where you mentioned Jade influencing Cat to be more opinionated and stand up for herself is one of the good things. Jade being protective of Cat as another. Cat's patient with Jade, and listens to her. But if we're looking at just mutual benefits, it could be as simple as that. All the other stuff about Jade, like her aggression and emotional impulsivity, seem to be calmed more with Beck and Andre.
Basically saying that not one person is enough to change someone to be their better selves. Jade still had a lot to learn, and I think the more Cat learned to speak up, the better equipped she would've gotten at communicating any discomforts or the like with Jade in their future. And Jade would, by that point, be able to accept and respect those wishes with their shared history and bond.
I wish this show didn't ended so abruptly, now I need 2 or 3 more seasons with a proper ending.

I like the idea of Jade helping develop Cat’s “shadow self” (some part of her that is repressed like the more snarky aggressive side.) I like to think that Cat, on some level, is aware of this and that could be a reason shes so close with Jade and is willing to ignore the more Uh irritating aspects of her personality. Perhaps similar can be said about Jade. She likes who she can be around Cat and the lightness she brings to her dark kinda tragic reality

If you ask me, I think that Beck should have ended up with Tori and Jade should have ended up with Andre.
Jade is a mean cruel woman with psychological problems. However, I don't think that Jade is inherently evil. I think that she is a bit of a fixer upper, Andre would be just the right guy to fix her.
I think there are quite a few similarities between Jade & Cat's relationship and Effy & Panda's in Skins. Like they are both very different characters with totally different personalities yet who are actually surprisingly close?
Not sure if anyone else has ever mentioned this, but I really love the way you alliterate some of your points. I enjoyed the ‘J&C’ at the beginning thesis. It’s someone I’ve always loved to do in my own writing, and I really enjoyed seeing it consistently in someone else’s.
