- Restoration: 1993 Mighty Tonka Dump Truck Restoration is my very first restoration project. This DIY restoration project was new territory for me. This Restoration was a tough one because this Tonka Truck was extremely rusty. This 1993 Mighty Tonka Dump Truck was begging for a restoration. In this video I show how I restore this truck to being brand new. I hope you enjoy the restoration video.

In this video I restore and repair a 1993 Mighty Tonka Dump Truck. This toy truck was mine when I was little and was left in the back yard for over 15 years. I actually thought my parents threw it away until we had some landscapers come out to do some work and they found it. I faced various challenges during this asmr restoration but I hope you enjoy the final product. Lastly, I hope everyone enjoys this Tonka Truck Restoration I sincerely thank you for watching and supporting my channel!

If you have not done so, check out the "Rescue and Restore" channel. He is the master of the method. I know you are a new channel and probably can not invest in "stuff" right now. Consider a sand blasting box. Sanding removes metal. Do only as a last resort or for polishing. The paint job is nice but will never last like a baked on powder coat. So, a powder coat system and oven to bake it on should be on your list. On the other hand, you have "fantastic plastic". All the plastic has luster and sheen. The tires are probably better than new, and often overlooked in the restoration process. Great job.
Thank you for leaving a comment. I plan on investing in all those that you mentioned sooner or later. I just have to save up money. I also plan on doing other types of restorations other than toys. I sincerely appreciate you watching and I hope you come back to watch more. Have a great weekend! - R&R

Wow !!! It looked a mess. Now it looks so good. My son had this truck when he was young. Ge used to ride it down the driveway at our house. Thanks for sharing
Hi Jane, thank you for writing me a nice comment. This was my first restoration but I was still happy with how it turned out. Its always nice to read that someone else had these toys and received so much joy from them. I hope to see you in the comment section for my other restorations. Take care my friend. - R&R
i had a tonka truck like that when i was a kid and im 48 now.
Hi Joey, I hope this video brought back positive memories. I know it brought back a lot of great memories for me while restoring this toy. Thank you for stopping by my channel and leaving this memorable comment. Its always great reading about all who had this as a toy growing up. Thank you again I hope to see another positive comment in the future. -R&R
my dad was a garbage man when i was young and he got the tonka truck i had out of the trash and because he didn't have enough money to buy a new one. and i was about 7 at the time and the truck was real rusty and i took it apart and sanded it down and painted it and that was what got me into restoring things now i restore toys computers furniture ,fishing rods, golf clubs and about anything i can find that needs repair one time i restored hundreds of toys and gave them out to kids that where very poor and there parents couldn't buy Christmas for them. and at the moment im restoring a mailbox .
I had one when i was 4 and im 17 now..

@@timothyhoward8213 Hey Tim, there were and still are great toys. Always great to see someone else was able to enjoy these toys as much as I did while growing up. - R&R
I would of taken the water hose to it first before even starting on the tear down. Would of made it a little easier.
Hi Robert, this is true and something a lot of viewers have mentioned. I wanted to make the restoration extreme as well as visually extreme. I think I was able to achieve that somewhat but I truly appreciate your comment. Thank you for watching my video and taking the time to leave me a comment. - R&R
If not a hose then maybe an air compressor.
Or a flame thrower.
@@RestoreandRepair
Just showing us the truck in it's original state would have accomplished your goals. Then you can start off with the logical step of hosing it down. Otherwise, it kind of looks like you don't know what you are doing.
@@TerryProthero Hi Terry, you are pretty much correct. lol This was my very first restoration. I really appreciate your comment and viewership. Hopefully my newer restorations are better. Stay healthy and take care my friend. - R&R
You could have washed first, easier for you to see the tabs and any thing you needed to drill .
Hi Tom, thank you for this positive feedback. Looking back on it I probably should have rinsed it off and then restored it but I thought it added a visual aspect to the restoration by seeing visually what the elements did to the truck. I sincerely hope you enjoyed the restoration video and I am always looking to get better. Thank you again for taking the time out of your day to not just watch my video but also taking the time to write a comment. - R&R
We have come across with some old Tonka toys that you might be interested in. Is there a way that you can be contacted
I would have hose the whole thing off before I do anything. That's one dirty truck!
Hi Craig, you are right. I should have hosed off the truck before hand. The reason I did not was because I wanted to make it look more extreme but the viewers want all future restorations hosed off first. I learn during and after every restoration and I look to you guys for advice as well as recommendations. Thank you so much for taking the time to write me a comment as well as watch the restorations. Hopefully you see the improvements I have made in my newer restorations. I hope you and your family are staying healthy. Take care brother! - R&R
Great job. I would definitely paint all surfaces even if they are not visible to protect against future rust. How did you get the tires so shiny? They look incredible!
HI Alfredo, thank you for your kind words. To get the tires to look shiny I sanded them down and then hit them with a gloss. The only reason I did was to make it a piece that can go on display rather then be used again. This was my very first restoration so its not perfect but I enjoyed doing it. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch as well as leave me a comment. I hope to continue to see you in the comment section for my other videos. Stay safe and healthy my friend. - R&R
Sorry but none of the parts looked clear of rust enough to be painted.
Hi John, I would like to thank you for your comment. All rust was removed from each part of the Tonka Truck. As shown in the video, the truck had all paint removed and then spent over 12 hours in Evapo-rust. Evapo-rust removed all heavy rust from the mental but left rust pits on the areas that were severely rusted. These rust pits were clearly visible in the video and were filled with a primer from Rustoleum. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to write to me. I know this was not the best restoration ever but I do want to get better at these. I hope you stop by again in the future to see my upcoming videos. I hope you have a great weekend and an even better week. - R&R
I must say. I don't know how but an amazing job. One question why wouldn't you clean it at first?
Looking back on it, I probably should have cleaned it first. I wanted to make this restoration as authentic as I could; so that was the main reason. I am very happy that you enjoyed the restoration video and I hope you stop by for the next video which should be coming out this weekend on Dec. 1st. - R&R
@hawkturkey lol :P - R&R
Thanks for rescuing the snails! Respect.
+peter martin haha thanks Peter 🙂 -R&R
This is the first of many restorations to come. I probably should have hosed off the truck in the beginning 😅 but I am still pleased with how everything turned out. Thank you for watching and please let me know if there is anything in particular you would like to see restored in future videos.
Warm Regards,

Just whatever you have at the time. Many thanks for sharing the video
Hey Martin, New video is up! I hope you are dong well - R&R
I admit I would have sprayed it with the garden hose. And I wouldn’t have saved the spider. Ewww. Edit. I’d use a power washer.
Hi BrazilLady, looking back on it I think I would have hosed it off before hand BUT it did make for a more extreme restoration video. Thank you for watching my video and leaving me a wonderful comment! - R&R
I have one that is not so bad that is at least 30 years old. I would like to get with you to restore mine back to its original glory as a shelf piece. How can I get in contact with you and are you willing to do it

Too heavy handed.Lacking attention to detail in prep work.
Hi Bonnie, you are right. This was my very first restoration and it is lacking in many aspects. As many as my viewers now, I am trying to get better every restoration I do. Thank you for your constructive criticism and I hope to see you in the comment section for future videos. Lastly, I hope you are staying healthy and safe during these times. Take care - R&R
Have you seen how they spray paint white them press the tires? Only thing I see that would make it pop is white lettering on the tires! Other than that awesome work! I just picked up one of these rust buckets, wish me luck
Hi King Opossum, I have seen guys do that and I have done that on one of my other restoration. This was my first one so I was just trying to see if I could restore something. I am really thankful that you took the time to leave a comment as well as watch the restoration. My newest restoration is extremely rusty. I hope your restoration goes well my friend and take care! - R&R
This makes me want to try something like this. Very inspiring video since he did it with basic tools (no sandblasting cabinet or powder coating). I’m goi g to check eBay now for some potential projects. Thanks man.

Currently redoing the same truck. Do you know what color yellow you used?
Hi Brian, I believe it was John Deere yellow from Rustoleum. I could be wrong but I think that was the yellow I used. - R&R

Hey John! haha this comment cracked me up. All in all I hope you enjoyed the restoration. Can't wait to see you in the comment section in future videos. I have another restoration coming out soon. Stay healthy my friend. - R&R
Looks good but you should've used your water hose to clean the crap out of it & those tires & wheels aren't the original tires were plastic & had different tred on them, the tires that's on it is rubber & I have no idea what those tires & wheels came off of but atleast there Tonka wheels & tires
Hi Justin, you are right. It was my first restoration. I did not really know what I was doing. - R&R
Great job considering no sand blaster and no power washer!!
The highway sounds sped up were a real hoot !! Sounded like you were at the Indy 500 ... Thanks for sharing.

How much for a restoration of one like thad, the only thing i live in tijuana an mine has the cab glass broken
Hi Francisco, it depends on the parts to buy and the paint you use. You can restore it for relatively cheap with spray paint and buying a new cab window. I would imagine you can restore it for $50-$60. - R&R
Looks like a Abandoned Tonka Dump Truck 1993 😂 0:04 pause

I know, my reaction is late, I love what you did, no sand blast and powder coat, how to cover the holes without using a bondo, everything is simple, EXCELLENT AND BEAUTIFUL WORK. by the way if you remember, could you tell me the brand and name of the yellow color you used is a BEAUTIFUL color, IF YOU REMEMBER
Hi Luis, thank you for your comment. It's a nice feeling to know there are people who enjoy the restorations. Here is a LINK to the color I used. amzn.to/3g0Klgf
Thank you again and I hope you are doing well my friend. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to ask. :) - R&R
In some cases it would have been better to use a sand blaster to remove paint and light rust.
HI cannoneer155mm, you are right regarding the sand blaster. After this restoration I went ahead and purchased one which is shown in my other videos. I made a few upgrades to the cabinet but would like to make further upgrades in the future. Thank you for watching the videos and I hope your week is starting off great. Take care! - R&R
buy a sandblasting cabinet or you will never gain followers.
Hi jmethier, thank you for suggestion. I will say that there are a lot of other restoration channels that do not have sandblast cabinets that get millions of views. Sandblasting is not a requirement to be successful it just makes the job easier and faster. Lastly, I do have a sandblast cabinet if you watch my other videos. I sincerely appreciate you watching and leaving me a comment. I hope everything is going well on your end and I hope you as well as your family are healthy n safe. Take care my friend. - R&R

Those 92-94 models had some flimsy, thin blowmold wheels. I got one from a thrift store and a mole or something chewed into the tires. Looks like they didnt stay with those tires and rims very long.

@@RestoreandRepair no problem I would like to ask about using maybe using Bed liner paint on the underside pieces to stop.it to rust
@@brucebonkowski3037 It might be a little think but I guess it depends on what you are doing with the truck. A lot of guys have been using them as collectables and using them as show pieces. But if you are going to have someone play with it and you want it to last then it might not be a bad idea. If the truck is primed and how paint on it with clear, I dont see it rusting. If does rust it would take a long time for it to happen. - R&R

@@RestoreandRepair I'm of the "Charlotte's Web" generation, so I've never been afraid of spiders. Spiders are nature's pest control service. Whenever I find them in my house, I will either relocate them outside or let them loose in my garage if it's really cold outside. They go where the food is, and if there is a food source in my house, I want them around. They take care of all the truly nasty bugs that I have no sympathy for whatsoever. :D

Hi there, I’ve just bought a similar truck from ebay for restoration and it was interesting to see how you done that. Little reference for me I’m planning to paint it pink, ha ha I know crazy idea. Anyway don’t worry about high-tech tools or anything you can do without. Last time I visited Bali and they do beautiful wood carving you know, and guess what they only used a flattened bicycle wheel spoke as a carving tool.

I have tried this restoration after watching a few videos. I’m ready to put my Tonka dump truck back together but I’m not sure what kind of rivets to use. Blind rivets leave a chunk that shows…what are the rivets called that are clean and finished looking? Also, not sure what size the larger rivets are. Rivet measuring is confusing. Advice?
Hi Lauren, it depends on the truck. I think for this truck I used the generic rivets that you can get at lowes or home depot. I think it was the "arrow" brand. Just get the assortment one. I am sorry I am not much help for this specific truck. - R&R

This one was so gross, there were a couple times I threw up in my mouth a little. Still, you pulled it off and made it shine!
Haha thank you Paul, this was my very first restoration. I hope you enjoy my newer ones. - R&R
@@RestoreandRepair I have been enjoying them. I just did my first - a simple jeep. Not so simple! Total learning curve. You're killing it.
@@pauly7218 That is awesome, I am still learning as well. I hope your next one goes well! - R&R
Nice Job, I'm glad to see that Tonka hasn't tried to cut corners like other companies and incorporate more plastic into thier products. That's most likely why it survived being left out in the elements for close to 30 years.
Hi Denise, thank you watching this restoration. You are right in saying that Tonka has not cut corners on their older generation trucks. I only hope to get better at restoring various items as the new year kicks off in just a month. I hope you are having a great weekend and thank you again for watching! - R&R
The paste you use is pretty cool.. great video and very good editing!. Sub!
+Roomies Garage the paste was pretty cool and worked really well. Thank you for the view and subscribing to my channel. I look forward to seeing you in the comment section in future videos. Thanks again! - R&R
A scrubbing bowl? Ehh?
Blast everything (whilst intact) with a soapy jet wash, then take it apart & only then bring out the scrubbing bowl.
Very back - arsed way to do this one Dude.
Great video but very confusing.
HI Wiggysan, I appreciate the comment brother. I am still learning and hopefully getting better with restorations. You are absolutely right that I should have washed it first. I was going for an extreme restoration look but the viewers wanted me to clean it first. If you watch all my other restorations after this one I made sure to clean them first. Thanks again for commenting and watching. I hope everything is going okay on your end. Stay safe my friend. - R&R
Super job....second time watching.....great results for totally "hands on" restore.
HI Neilia, thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching for your second time! I am happy that you enjoy the restorations. I hope you have been well and take care my friend. -R&R
😁👍🍺
Hi Nina, I am really happy that you enjoyed the restoration. I'll let you in on a little secret. After each restoration I have a nice cold beer. When I do some of these restorations its 100 degrees outside. Anyways, I really appreciate you watching my very first restoration. I hope to continue to see you in the comment section for my other restoration videos. I hope you have been well and take care my friend. - R&R
I have one of these in my diecast car collection somewhere. I have a small one too I think from McDonald’s or Burger King.
Hi Policeboy, this trucks are great. That is so cool that you have one in your diecast collection. Thank you for subscribing as well as taking the time to leave a comment. I look forward to seeing you in the comment section for my other videos. I hope you are doing well and take care my friend. - R&R
An amazing transformation considering the condition it was in when you started it. Must have been very satisfying.
Hi Martin, thank you for this nice comment. It was my first restoration and I am very pleased with how it turned out. It was satisfying to restore something that had a lot of meaning to me. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to leave me a comment and I hope you enjoy the rest of the videos as they come out. Thank you again! - R&R
i remove all my rust with white vinegar it works real good and its cheap but it takes 24 to 48 hours to work.
Hey Joey, yeah the rust remover I was using did a good job but it took 24-48 hours as well. I got a new sand blast cabinet for my next build which saves me the time of stripping the paint and using the rust remover. It ends up paying for itself in the long run anyway. Hope over to my other video to check it out. Lastly, thank you for your comment! -R&R
Missing the decal mighty Tonka on the cab
Holy crap! That thing looked like it had been buried under a pile of leaves for 15 years!
haha, it pretty much was. It had been covered up by a lemon tree that had not been trimmed in many many years. We didnt want to trim it because it produced so many great lemons for so long. Thank you for stopping by my channel. I hope you enjoyed the video. R&R
Very nice restoration. I have only just become interested in the restoration of toys. Your video was very fun to watch and really got my juices flowing to take on a Tonka restoration project!
Hi Peter, thank you for this wonderful comment and I wish you the best of luck on your restorations. I hope your year is starting off great and I hope to see you again in the comment section for future videos. Take care brother - R&R
For a cleaner look, paint the pop-rivets first in the same color as the background.
Thank you for this feedback as well as taking the time to watch my video. I hope you have a wonderful holiday! - R&R
the top of the grille were some chipsmaybe used some we dry sandpaper also I wondered the underneath of chassis I use Berliners even under all the panels to seal it from rust returning
Hey Bruce, I will have to go and look at the truck. I still have it. Its great seeing you again and thanks for the tips :) - R&R
SteelStik .. Great tip.... Thanks heaps !
Where was that thing stored and for how long.....cause holy crap...what a mess. I think I would have tried to get some of the dirt off the truck before I took it apart.
lol it was under my overgrown lemon tree in my backyard. That is why I thought I lost it but once we had trimmed back the trees in the back yard and did some work it was revealed. So that's what 15+ years outside looks like. I thought about cleaning it beforehand but I was too eager to start restoring it. Thank you for commenting on my video. I hope you enjoyed the restoration. Ill have another video up soon. Thanks again :)
Lol. That's not a Tonka truck... that's a micro environment.
haha that is true 😂 - R&R
You need the Powder coating and sandblasting box 👍😉
Hi Max, thank you for the recommendation. This was my first restoration. I have newer videos out. Thank again brother and take care! - R&R
I wanted the orange one for Christmas, never got it...
Hi Joe, that is a bummer but hopefully now you can buy one. Thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment and I hope you enjoyed the restoration. Lastly, I hope you and your family are staying healthy. Take care my friend - R&R

@@joeschlotthauer840 You totally should. You can find parts online. I think it would be a fun project! - R&R
I've seen some really bad ones in these videos but that one ranks at the top of the list. One hell of a great job my friend! 👍👍👍
Hey John, wow that is a really nice compliment. Thank you for your sincere comment it really made my day. I appreciate you stopping by and watching my very first restoration. I just posted a new one today. Stay safe and healthy John. - R&R

Hi bro 👋👋👋 very good restoration massive Tonka truck 👍👍👍
Thank you! I am so glad you enjoyed the restoration. Please stop by for my future videos. - R&R
Why didn’t you wash that truck before you took it apart?
HI Gerald, I did not wash it because I wanted a more extreme restoration look but after I had taken it a part I said to myself that I should have washed it first. Thank you for your comment and viewership. I hope you are doing well and please take care :) - R&R
A decent casting with good bones but the typical rust...
I was surprised at the condition of the truck for being outside in the elements for 15+ years. - R&R
Great job! It looked like a dead animal was in the back, lol.
Hey Tim, thank you for your kind comment. I wasn't sure if I could bring her back since it was my first restoration but she is still kicking today :P My lastest restoration was a rough one but looks great. Here is a link: ruclips.net/video/EMNtJXPyD9o/видео.html
