I think there's a lot to be said for using basic equipment - folk like myself who are on a tight hobby budget - I've started to do very cheap low end Tonka restos (I also paint a bit and have a couple of cheap old motorcycles 😃) - appreciate great results done with spray cans and sandpaper etc. It shows what can be done on the cheap. I use paint stripper and electrolysis to get clean metal. Keep up the excellent work.

@@RescueRestore Thanks brother that means a lot. I am still looking into getting a powder coating system. I actually have a question for you, I will dm you on instagram. Thank again brother! - R&R
When I was about 10 years old, one of my cousins gave me a roadster exactly like yours, less damaged by corrosion but without wheels, without seats, without rudder, and with severe damage to the paint. With parts from another plastic toy car, I adapted "new wheels", and the driver's seat. At that time, the only thing I had available was a golden spray paint, with which I painted the body that originally goes in yellow, and what should go in black I painted with black shoe ink, the same as the frame of the "windshield". I think to have done it with only 10 years old, I did not do such a bad restoration, and I still keep my roadster exactly the same as from that time, and never in all these years did I see another one like it, until I found your excellent restoration video . Congratulations!. For me, it was a great restoration!.
Hi Osdelced, thank you for sharing that with me. I am really interest to see what it looks like. When you mentioned gold paint I was thinking that it might actually look really cool. If I think that now I am sure as a 10 year old that color had to look awesome. Using black shoe ink was a good idea :) Lastly, thank you for your kind words and I am glad you were able to enjoy the restoration. I hope it brought back many great memories for you . I hope to see you in the comment section in future videos. Take care my friend and stay healthy. - R&R
@@RestoreandRepair Thank you for your kind response! I would be happy to send you some pictures of my roadster. It is a shame that it is not possible in this place (youtube), because what we who share the hobby of restoration is mainly the perpetuity of the good things of the past that are worth preserving, and try to contribute to the promotion of a good way of recycling to stop as much as possible the production of so many junk items with programmed obsolescence, or that are part of passing fads that only last a few weeks or months. Our roadsters are over 50 years old ... Will there be any current electronic toys that can last at least 5 years? ... Greetings, and I hope to see another new video of you with another excellent restoration!. ;)
@@osdelced My email is in the description. It would be really cool to see them. You raise a very good question if the toys kids play with today will be around for that long. Hopefully the vintage stuff doesn't disappear so that we can keep restoring things lol. - R&R
First: I'd like to say that you do awesome work. Second: The uses of spray painting comes out just as good as powder coating. That's my opinion. And third: Although the commercials drive me crazy if it helps you out by setting through them then so be it. You should be very proud of the work you do!
Hi John, its really nice reading your comments. I did reply to the other comment you left on the tow truck. Its taken me a lot of time to get okay at spray painting, I am far from perfect but you are right that it does come out just as nice as powder coating. lol regarding the commercials I feel ya. I hate sitting through them as well. I appreciate you doing that though since it does help the CPM metric. I appreciate you supporting my channel John and I look forward to having many conversations in the future. Till next time my friend. - R&R
I like the final look of properly applied spray paint. However, you still have to have a properly prepared surface for the end result to have a chance.
One of the reasons I like your videos is precisely because you don't use a lot of expensive equipment. Part of the reason I and other people watch restoration videos is to learn how to do this kind of thing ourselves. I don't have a sandblaster or a powder coater, nor am I likely to get one. Seeing how to do restorations with the basic equipment someone might have in their workshop is part of the appeal. .. Keep up the great work.

Very good work. Glad you pointed out how time consuming each sanding step was, and using the meguiar's for the final polishing was great. Wed like to see the details of how you fixed the windshield, exactly what you replaced, and cleaning off the axles. For us resto video junkies, details are important. Thanks again you a beautiful video!
Hi Pat, I really appreciate you taking the time to write me a comment. The meguiar's worked really great and I was happy with the end product. In regards to the windshield, all I did was sand it and polish it. I sanded it with 400 grit sandpaper and then hit it with I believe 600 and then 1500 at the very end. I did the same with the bumper and axels. The parts that were replaced was driver/passenger seat and the wheels. I'll be more specific in my next video. Thank you for letting me know what you guys wanna see in the videos. It helps me make them better. I hope you are staying healthy brother and please take care. - R&R

Hi Thomas, this paint job came out pretty good. Not perfect which I dont know if I will ever get but this one was pretty good. I think sanding the clear coat helped a lot. - R&R
I've been doing restorations like this for 30 +years Allow me to help you out a little. You don't need to wash it. That's a step you don't need. When you sandblast, you don't have to sand it. When you sand it after you've sandblasted it, you are defeating the purpose of sandblasting. Etching the metal. Sanding is a step you don't need. Two steps you are missing. You should wear gloves. Never handle bare metal with your bare hands. If you do you will leave finger oils on the metal. Finger oils will cause fisheye, runs, and orange peel. You will also get orange peel if you're spraying from too far away. Wear gloves through the whole painting process. Use a good metal cleaner before you prime. Duplicolor offers a spray grease and wax remover. Use it before you prime. Most all primer is porous. You don't have to sand it after you prime it. If you clean the metal your primer will go on smoother. And you won't get bleed through. So, anything that is under it will bleed through it. And cause problems in the paint. If you paint it as soon as the primer flashes over, you will get a chemical bond. On something this small, no need to sand the primer. On something this small, I go for the chemical bond. When you spray your paint, don't get too far away. Too far away and you will get dry spray. Too close and you will get runs. I usually spray about 6 inches away. But, I've gotten used to it and I know how fast to move my hand. That's something you will learn on your own. Me, I prefer painting. It takes learning how to handle whatever you're spraying with. Powder coating doesn't take any talent at all. You just blow the powder on it and let the heat do the rest. It takes time and talent to learn how to paint. Also, here is a link to a FB page. All these guys, including me, are builders and restorers. You can learn a lot on this page......facebook.com/groups/207859656927534/

Obviously the finished article looks about 1,000 times better. But, of course, collectors prefer the models which are in pristine original condition. So I'm curious - roughly how much would one of these fetch if it were in tip-top condition and original, how much would the unrestored wreck go for and how much for the restored one? Mind you, speaking as a non-collector, I like the gleaming one in the video most of all.

I don't think you need to go to the expense of a powder coating system. Look up and practice spraying technique; you seem to 'jab' at the spraying in short bursts. A bit longer spray and pass beyond the piece, to avoid build up where you change direction. I also think a wire brush attachment for your Dremel, along with a wire brush/buffing wheel combo on a bench grinder, would save you much time sanding after the sand blasting. Ultimately the micro abrasion from the wire brush will add key for the primer coat. Please don't take these as criticism, just observations. You achieved a fantastic finish, I'm just thinking of all that sanding!

@@RestoreandRepair Hee is what I found out. Powder coating dates back to the late 1940s early 50s. It was perfected by a German scientist, Dr. Gemmer. Before that organic polymers were used to paint metal. I was wrong in my thinking that powder coating didn't date that far back. So,toys dating back that far could have been powder coated. I would imagine it would have depended on company and cost. Hmm, no primer found. They are toys. Do you think they would have taken the care you did ? I hope this sheds some light for you. Your video shows you don’t necessarily need expensive equipment. You did such a wonderful job of prep and post sanding that the results were better than many powder coaters out there (who don’t sand or prime when they need to) and the best spray painted restoration I’ve seen. Great job!
Hi myksweet, wow that is a really nice compliment. I really struggled with the paint portions of my restorations. I watched a ton of videos and just hoped to get better.

Will there be any current electronic toys that can last at least 5 years? ...

Nice shiny paint job!!

Hi clearlake, I think you have great questions and the market changes. Everything on this car are original parts other than the paint. Restored cars can go for a lot but it depends on the market. I am glad you enjoyed the video and the end product. Thank you for leaving me a comment and watching. Please stay healthy and safe during these tough times. Take care my friend. - R&R
Where do you get the tired toys?
Hi William, you can get the tires on ebay. It took me a few week to wait till some were being sold. I hope this helps and thank you for leaving me a comment. Take care brother. - R&R
U r welcome my brother God bless you
Thanks Jerry, and God bless. - R&R
When you spray paint don't spit the paint waft a constant stream of paint side to side reduces the risk spotting if your spraying interiors an exteriors spray interiors first before you spray the exterior, good luck in the future.
Hi Lez Mila, thank you for these recommendation and I will be sure to put them into practice for my next restoration. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching the restoration. I hope you are doing well my friend. - R&R
I would love to see these old toys customized. You know like Bitch'n Ride custom. They are steel, Some body work, custom paint, interiors, suspension, wheels and tires, light kits 3D printed parts. You know take it to the next level.
HI Jarom, lol your comment made me laugh and I think there is a time for that. Maybe one day I will do a tricked out restoration :P Thank you for leaving me comment brother. - R&R

Hi Sean, thank you for your kind words. I hope the future restorations are just as good. Thank you again! - R&R
Hi Blackpoolrock, thank you so much for leaving such great feedback. I look at your comment as positive so dont worry. I am always thankful that when people watch my videos they give me pointers. The shape of the yellow body of this toy makes it difficult to paint...but you're correct in that he should use longer and smoother sweeps when painting.
@@SpockvsMcCoy Thank you Appleman, I will try and get better at painting. I hope you are doing well my friend. Take care :) - R&R
Brad, nice to meet You.
You have very fast hand speed, have you ever done any Boxing👊
Seriously though, Thought maybe you would have upholstered the seats.
Hi Mark, nice to meet you as well. Haha I did play Ice Hockey for 25 years and I guess you could say we have fast reflexes. I up the speed on the video. Sometimes the speed is 2x or 4x so that people are not watching me do something for a long time. Thank you for commenting :) - R&R

The toys were originally painted not powder coated.
Hi Ray, I did not know this. It seems as though the paint was baked on or something. I dont see primer on the toys as I am sandblasting. Do you know what kind of paint they used? - R&R
@@RestoreandRepair
Hee is what I found out.
It did for me.

Dude you need to watch rescue and restore guy he's a pro at what he does you might learn a few to things
Hi Devern, I watch rescue and restore and I am friends with him. Him and I actually talk quiet a bit on the side. I appreciate the recommendation and I will try to get to his level of restorations. Thanks brother. - R&R
Should've primed before sanding it would've taken care of the pitting and all
Hi Devern, I have done that in the past but the primer does not fill the deep pitting. I did not do a good job of showing the deep rust pitts but the primer would not have filled them. I had to sand it down to get it where the primer would fill the rust pits. All in all I hope you enjoyed the restoration my friend. - R&R
Looks like this one required a bit of metalwork..
HI Thomas, always great seeing a comment from you. Yeah this one had a lot of shallow rust pits. Do you have any suggestions for a small orbital sander for metal work like this? Let me know please. - R&R

A decent casting with good bones but the usual rust..
Hey Thomas its good to see you again brother. Yeah the rust on this piece was interesting. There was must on the wheels and under the body of the car which makes me wonder if it sat in a shallow puddle and then in heat or something. Pretty good rust pits on this one. - R&R
Its not easy work 🚗
Thank you! - R&R
Powder coating isnt restoring items. The items you restore are painted. To resore anything is to do it as it was originally made.

Your video shows you don’t necessarily need expensive equipment. You did such a wonderful job of prep and post sanding that the results were better than many powder coaters out there (who don’t sand or prime when they need to) and the best spray painted restoration I’ve seen. Great job!
