- Let's take an in-depth look at the DJI Mavic Pro (goo.gl/AUxgpy), DJIs most compact drone and maybe even new flagship. I have been taking it to the test for more than two weeks and can show you all it's pros and cons. I tested the flight modes, the batteries, the durability and overall safety, I checked whether it's a good investment or not. All links can be found below.

Tom's Tech Time y
There are vents that goto a fan that are blocked with the lens cover on.
I saw in another video how the iPad fits. Remove the cable from the arm slot, angle the arms out and the corners of an iPad fit in the arm slots at an angle
Tom's Tech Time hello I would like to buy I drone but my budget is 1200 wich one you think is the best . thanks
Hi,One question: Can I use the Mavic as a regular camcorder?
Incredible review and beautiful cinematography. Love the effort and production you put into this comprehensive review of the Mavic Pro, the images look amazing. I love cars, supercars to be specific and think the Mavic pro would be the perfect tool to compliment my car videos. Keep up the great work man. Totally awesome!
From what I've seen in other Mavic Pro videos, the plastic piece covering the lens isn't supposed to stay on during flight. It's meant as a protective cover while you transport the drone.
Oui, oui. But it would have been a really good idea for some extra in-flight safety. Stay tuned and fly safe!
Tom's Tech Time Oh yea. When I saw the plastic cover, I thought the same as you. But, I also realized, as you did, that it would create problems in certain situations. So, hopefully, they will incorporate a piece that doubles as protection and an in-flight cover without issues. Great video, by the way.
In your video, you had mentioned the filter(s) for sunny day for the Mavic. Which filter do you recommend?
thank you.
The most in depth review of the mavic pro yet. Thank you. I want to get one of these for moto adventure.
Yes, it's a great little tool. Please purchase your machine through my link to support my work for free: goo.gl/AUxgpy. Stay tuned and fly safe!
Tom; I follow all of your videos and can say they have been so so helpful. This is another one which was very well done by you. Thank you very much.
fixed pint focus is only for point up to 25 meters away. Tap the screen on anything beyon 25 meters away and the camera goes into INFINITE focus mode....
Pathfinder24Flims Yeah, that error in the video was bugging me too.
Thanks for sharing.
ive been on a dji mavic pro video binge for the past week to deciede if i want to spend the money for this and i have to say, this was THE BEST filmed and in depth review ive ever seen! great job! I even wrote down your website for when i get the drone to help with video shooting and editing. Thanks for this review! keep them coming!
Thanks for the awesome feedback, Dustin! Stay tuned and fly safe!
the cap is not for flying.. its for storage
Always great material on Your channel and thanks for sharing. Greetings from WW2HistoryHunter
The protection cap is meant to be removed, absolutely not to be used during recording, it will cause poor image quality, as you may have realized !
Wolfie km xxxxxxxxxxxxx,,xx by I hgffffrrrrrruuuu
also cause overheating due to it blocking the air intake
Angry Reviews Thank you they are thinking it is protecting the camera but your drone is over hearing instead of protecting your gimbal and your camera
Were you shooting with the gimbal protector on? As I understand, this is for protection when transporting! You can't get the best image when shooting through a piece of crappy, curved plastic!
Hey, no, he shooted without the gimbal protector and without this plastic bubble :)
Verena Reusch he kept saying that DJI should make the plastic bubble better so there is less distortion when shooting through it
Hey, I shooted without the bubble.
Tom's Tech Time ok, cool. it's because you said twice that DJI should make it better for shooting. I think they should make it frosted plastic so it is impossible to shoot through and so no mistakes!
Hey, yeah, I think it would be awesome to have a case for the camera because when for example wind comes up it's simply more protected... And I just wanted to mention, that when they deliver a protection for the camera, it would have been great if the people could have used it for filming aswell...
Same as you mentioned.
Stay tuned, fly safe!
is this your full time job ?? the production quality for this video is ming boggling...i cannot imagine the amount of effort/time it would have needed for you to bring this video out.
seriously amazing video!!
all the best
One of, if not , The best drone test videos I have ever seen ! Well done ! Keep up the awesome work. I will be back for more.
Tom, I believe the lens cover is for protection during transport. could this be the reason why you saw propeller shadow reflections? also, iJustine's video has shown the propellers from the mavic during flight I believe.
RecordLifeMedia That's what I heard to. that the plastic bubble is just a protection of the camera and gimble during transport of the drone. it's not meant to be on the drone when you are flying and filming.
Thanks for clearing that up.
Nice car channel, liked your visit to creator store.
Truthfully, I want to keep it one for a few flights myself. I've seen the demo vids but I like the idea of extra protection for the lens and gimbal.
RecordLifeMedia Hey thanks man. The youtube store was mega fun! Just gotta get to 10K subs sharpish so I can get some merchandise in there LOL.
Hey Tom! thanks for this video! i just bought a Mavic today and i just CANT WAIT TO USE IT after watching this video :D thanks again for this video!
Great review :)
I believe the plastic bubble is just to protect the camera during transport.
James Murphy
that's correct. it's strictly to protect the camera/gimbal during transport.
It being removable is a plus, and then some.
When I saw the first pic of the drone. My first.... well maybe second or third thought was. God I hope that thing is removable with out much fuss. I give it a thumbs up. It's a practical option.
Yes, it's not supposed to be used during filming. But that's not the point. The Karmas camera (the GoPro) is safe when it bumps into something, while the DJI would probably brake. The bubble would have been a really nice bit of extra protection. Stay tuned and fly safe!
Cool review, looking forward for the new drone season (spring 2017) and thousands of people testing it before really considering to buy one ;)
I'm curious to see your film school videos. I guess winter is more to sit at home and do video editing than filming. But it would be nice if you do some testing with snow and cold weather. I know that the DJI battery can be sensitive to cold weather. So it would be nice to see how the Mavic Pro behaves in such conditions. Keep us tuned and fly safe ;)
Isn't the plastic bubble just a lens protector?
Could be used in sports mode if your not recording. AS your more likely to crash too. :)
Yes, its a transport protection.. djeez... that was BAD that he used that as a con :/
Yes, that is it's primary purpose. But when asked how to protect the gimbal during flight (like a Gimbal Guard for other drones), DJI themselves recommended that you use the plastic bubble in flight for that purpose. Currently, That plastic bubble is the only option on the market if you'd like to protect the very vulnerable gimbal in flight (when landing to be more specific).
Hey Tom, I'm glad I came across this video and your channel. You delivered a great presentation on this product and I can't wait till I get my hands on one for filming. Thanks heaps!
After watching this excellent video, why on earth would any one even consider or waste their money on a GoPro Karma.
Better video quality and no prop shadows on the lens ever? Hand held gimbal, built in screen on the controller etc etc. Obvious really.
The Karma is junk compared, I agree.
Maybe GoPro employee?
For the drone alone, probable not, but I'm one user that would probably buy the Karma grip and a gopro hero 5 on top of my mavic. Very impressed with the karma gimbal and its price point compared to the osmo
Yu Chen GoPro best stick to making camera's and just that then.
Noch nicht komplett bis zum Ende geschaut, muss aber kurz loswerden wie geil deine Arbeit ist! Steckt sicherlich viel Arbeit drin. - Weiter so!
Thanks for this. I couldn't decide on the Mavic or a P4.
And what decision did you finally make? :)
i have a P4 but id love the mavic for travel
I will be ordering a Mavic Pro. I go cycling a lot in the summer months and this will be handy to carry in my backpack rather than my current P3S.
if its really only that and you dont mind the smaller FOV with the mavic, why not just get a mavic for size convenience?
***** I never said anything about wasting money...if its smaller youre more opt to bring it because its easier to transport and travel with
For over 10 days I've been refreshing the link to 'Tom's Tech Time' each time a I sat at my iMac. This morning I wasn't disappointed :-)
Many thanks for this valuable review Tom. Coming from a none drone background I find your presentation style clear and easy to follow. I feel confident I could fly a Mavic straight out of the box.
Haha, cool. Thanks for the feedback! Stay tuned and fly safe!
isn't the plastic bubble only for lens protection in transit - you don't need to fly with it.
Yes, that is it's primary purpose, but when asked about how to protect the gimbal during flight (like a Gimbal Guard for other drones), DJI themselves recommended that you use the plastic bubble in flight for that purpose. Currently, That plastic bubble is the only option on the market if you'd like to protect the very vulnerable gimbal in flight (when landing to be more specific).
Devon VP - just seen an unboxing and it was black and couldn't be used a clear cover.
Anomaly? Maybe they changed their minds about it? You can watch DJI recommend it as an in-flight Gimbal Guard in the hands on review by Tested. It'll be around the 9 minute 30 second mark.
That's a silicone "slip" over the clear plastic bubble. It comes off and can be put back on, easily.
I am one of your subscribers and like your informative videos very much. Thank you for pointing out the CE standard 4km flight range for non U.S. countries. You Rock!
Thank you for the feedback! Stay tuned and fly safe!
The plastic bubble is only for protection when transporting the drone. You are supposed to take it off when flying....
I have been following DJI for a couple of years, and now am ready to buy. The Mavic is an incredible accomplishment.
Thank you very very much for that excellent review and how-to. It is the best I have seen to date.
This was the best review video of any product on this site. All I have to do now is figure out is where to get $1300 from.
I guess I could skip eating for a while
Be thankful you're not in Australia. $2200 here.
Yikes!
Nope, I paid $1699Aud on the DJI site.
Vee Really? Was that just the Mavic and the remote? Or was that with the extra batteries etc.?
The best detailed breakdown review of the Mavic! Awesome work. Thank you!! Keep it up. Love the nitty gritty details.. there's never too much information.
The plastic bubble is just for transport, not for use during flight time.
jafs65 no you can fly with bubble not with global lock..js
edward nygard the front has vents for air ventilation, the plastic bubble makes it so air can't go through which can lead to overheating
I get your remark about the plastic camera protection thing but it's mainly for protection during transportation of the drone and not to be used during flight. Great video, loved watching it!
I still don't watched the vid....but thanks you dio much for this dude!!! thumbs up
I've found that the silver frame to the lens also creates lens flare in some conditions, it often looks like you've left the bubble on.
In case it wasn't already mentioned, that clear plastic bubble should be removed before flight.
Thank you for making videos. Your content is not only informational but very entertaining. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Cameron. Stay tuned and fly safe!
Why would you put a bubble on when flying. That's not designed for that. What are you trying to protect against? Birds?
Wow, what a review, finally! So many reviews about the Mavic Pro on RUclips, but this is one of the best in depth reviews! Thanks Tom!
Wow, endlich das Review, welches so auf die Drohne eingeht, wie ich es mir die ganze Zeit gewünscht habe. Danke für dieses ausführliche Review!
The plastic bubble is only for transport...
Great video btw!
I know. But, as mentioned in several other comments already, it would have been a smart protection for the fragile camera. Stay tuned and fly safe!

Another great and in-depth video from TTT! Best one I have seen yet for the Mavic Pro. One thing no one has mentioned: I would be a bit concerned about the fold out arms - do they lock in place? If not what's to keep them from moving in flight?Have you flown it with Litchi?
Larry Foss The arms are really stable and well made, very sturdy. So no worries about that.
Verena Reusch do they lock in place?
Larry Foss They sit really tight , so no chance that they won't fall back.
so yeah, they are locked, so to say.
plastic camera protective case wasnt meant for flying ..
Can you take photos while the camera is recording video?
Best review so far.
I have been watching videos of the Mavic Pro for months now and this is the best video for learning an array of information.!!
Why the hell did you not remove the gimbal and camera protector ???
He did, he only used it once for the shot during the sunlight to show the audience that the plastic bubble is unuseful.
Verena Reusch he didn't remove it at the beginning, so the drone wasn't fly ready... just saying. I know it's a small detail, but still
sehr gutes Review Tom.
60 mb per/sec will not cut it. It would nice to see 100mb/per/sec
Getting my Mavic Pro by end of the month, and that was the most complete video I have seen about it so far on here. Thank you.
PS: Used ti live and work in Switzerland for 7 years. Nice to see your video around there. Brought some nice memories back too.
Dude.....you're not supposed to fly with the plastic bubble still on it. Its a protective cover for storage only lol
this is a serious and really well made professional review, the best I've seen and more complete till now... thx! take care dude.
I know it's a new video because of the Mavic Pro, but it seems like an old video because of the Abercrombie shirt.
Thx Tom. Your videos are always great. I really appreciate that you talk fast and get to the point without all the dribble. Reminds me of CNet. Very professional. Thanks! The big feature I would like to see on the Mavic Pro is a tripod mount. Then you could attach any old mini tripod (like a Joby) and have a hand held stabliised camera (A poor mans Osmo!).
Also, did you mention the Mavic Pros wind tolerance? This is the biggest 'con' for me because we are sailing around and there is often lots of wind. I regularly push the boundaries with my Phantom 3, and I wouldn't want to go backwards in terms of the ability to drive through the wind.
You cant use anything larger than a phone as a screen and no HDMI
Raptor50aus people will make something using 3D printer so u can connect larger tablets.
highks but even your phone still shows information like speed distance altitude and all, the controller basically shows abit more info as well as error messages like if your sd card isn't working or if something is wrong with the propes.
The see what you are filming its useless in direct sunlight.
Not true, if you go to one of the many Mavic pages on facebook you'll see there's already some pre-orders for a tablet holder for the mavic controller.
Slightlyevil oh cool
Great review very in depth :P
Soy al único q le parece q este men se parece al JOKER🃏 de El Escuadrón Suicida ( la película)😂😂
jajaja cierto, es igualito tio
Jajaja sii loco. Te pasaste. Escuadrón Suicida. 😂😂😂😂👌🏻
Superb review thanks! Question if I may? How close can you get with the camera to something - if doing a building survey on the tower you filmed for eg, could you hover within a metre and film the stone - or would the obstacle protection stop you? Could you stop above a chimney and look down it - I could do that with the P2 - but threw it away as too unreliable in the end. Many thanks! Pete
OK, but why do I have to "Watch this before you buy DJI Mavic Pro"?
Nick Plichta - Because you have nothing better to do since you can't buy the Mavic yet.
To make sure you're up and ready for such a great device! ;)
Clickbait.
lol ..thats rude
Hi Tom ! Great review, you did a wonderful job. Just some questions.
You're not supposed to do the calibrate dance anymore with this Mavic ?
Where does the memory card goes inside ?
Whoever dislikes must have worked on the Karma ;)
It was really strange: within five minutes I collected 17 dislikes yesterday, right after launching the video. The people / single person didn't even have the chance to watch it. But who cares... Thanks for the comment, stay tuned and fly safe!
Hey Tom. Thanks for the great content as usual. Very informative and professional. Just wanted to point out that the links to the other videos like the camera settings need to be updated above in the Show More section. Thanks again and Happy Holidays. Keep up the great work and keep the content coming.
"Engineering plastic"? That's not a real thing.
do you feel stupid?!
No. The guy quoting wiki should though. There is no such thing as "engineering plastic". There's plastic. That's it. Styrene is styrene whether you call it "engineering plastic" or "model plastic" or styrofoam. There is nothing special about a plastic that makes it "engineering plastic". PEEK is plastic, polycarb (Lexan) is plastic, acetal (Delrin) is plastic, etc. etc . etc. etc. "Engineering plastic" is a marketing term. If I open a drawing for a plastic part it's not going to say "engineering plastic" it's going to have a designation that gives the base, any fill, additives, etc. For example:
web.rtpcompany.com/info/data/0200/flame.htm
Do you see "engineering plastic" anywhere on there? No. Because it's meaningless. In the immortal words of AvE it's "marketing wank".
Lol
"It's still a classification that business and manufacturers use,"
No. It's not. Nowhere in any of our specs, drawings, etc. does "engineering plastic" appear. Not once in any brainstorming session have I ever heard somebody say, "make sure we use engineering plastic". In fact if anybody did I imagine the looks they'd get would be along the lines of, "how'd you get in here?" Not once have I ever heard a plastics shop refer to anything we were discussing as "engineering plastic". Guarantee if you called a place that does plastic molding and said, "I need a quote for a part made of engineering plastic" they'd say, "have your engineer give us a call".
Oh hell, talk about useless pedantry.
Keep in mind the audience in here. I'd say the ratio of photographers to geeks to manufacturing engineers is around 150:75:1. The review is trying to convey that plastics being used here can take a hit better than the materials used in other products. Besides, there are plenty of companies that sell their higher-grade plastic materials as "engineering plastics". Curbell, Quadrant, Bay Plastics and DSM to name a few from a quick and dirty Google search. If its used in marketing materials, its certainly a good enough phrase to use in a drone review. Which, in essence, is just marketing. So good on you for cluing in the marketing thing.
TL;DR - Sure, we might look silly saying "I need this part made of engineering-grade plastic STAT" as a plastics engineer. It just so happens we're not in one of your brainstorming sessions. We're on RUclips.
Hi, will be possible to fly this Mavic with a Samsung Galaxy S7, since now I can not fly my P4 with it? Thanks
You look like Milo Yanopopulupupulous
Thanks for the video very informative, look forward to my mavic arrival next Tuesday :-)
Im so absolutely pissed of I when heard that We in europe only have half the flying distance With this FCC And CE bullshit I bought this thing with the Idea I could fly a distance's over 7 km I will be sending it back Godamnit If I bought this drone from The U.S Am I still Limited to. European nonsense CE standards
I was thinking exactly this! Never heard anyone else say that before and has really put me off it.
still limited in europe, because the GPS decide for you, based on where you fly, even if you buy it in US.
I just was reading the same thing on some forums It really sucks in my opinion
so can see 5 km away? Are you aware of drone rules and regulations?
I'm a bit confused as to why not being able to fly 7km would bother you, though; it's as if you bought the whole quad for that. No one should need that distance really :P
Have watched around 10 other reviews of mavic so far.... You, Sir... NAILED IT! Subscribing!
Did you get a lot of money from DJI? haha
Hey, I do not get any money from DJI. I get my money via several affiliate programs. Stay tuned, fly safe.
Yeah, you tell him. I've seen plenty of reviews out there and I'm hearing a similar views. I'm pretty sure I shall update my Phantom 1 with Mavic now :)
hi Tom, in the settings, can I change the Aperture to higher number so that I can capture sharper photos/videos while doing landscape photography/videography?
why are you so mean Smithy? why? why?
No I just aked him . No bad reason mate. calm down.
Very professional overview of the Mavic Pro. My Mavic is arriving tomorrow. I can't wait.
Very well done Tom. Amazing job as always, I'm conflicted however as I just purchased my P4 less than two months ago. When you factor in the drone, plus two extra batteries, charging hub (it was a bundle and the college discount helped, 10% off) an iPad mini 4 , SKB hard case and ND filters, I'm at $1875 in. If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. Suffice to say, I'm happy with the P4, if I knew the Mavic was coming I would have waited.
The P4 is awesome! Enjoy flying it! Maybe you buy the Mavic Pro 2 or whatsoever next year. ;) Stay tuned and fly safe!
There is a way to use an ipad mini with the RC if you use the USB port in the back of the controller and take out the wire for the phone on the left. You can put the corners of the ipad into the controller and it works
Hi Tom! Absolut gutes, informatives Video! Bin schon so gespannt wann sie endlich ausgeliefert wird ;) und natürlich auf weitere Videos von dir :)
Great review, thanks!
Seems like the Mavic Pro would not work well for indoor filming in low light conditions, since it has to rely on VPS? (How stable is it to fly with no positioning systems working?) Also, how does it do outdoors, but tracking while flying backwards, so the shot is of the front of the person running towards the drone? - thanks
That was a great demo of the different top speeds on different modes, side by side by side.
Great in depth video Tom, the only remark I have is I wish you used a lav mic, the room echo noise is very distracting from what you're talking about. Makes it hard to focus on your words. And your video quality is very good. That's all.
One of the best review I have seen on youtube. Great job and thanks for the efforts!
Excellent review, finally someone has taken the time to do it right. I will be purchasing mine through your referral link. Thanks for the hard work.
Love the Mavic shots on the black background with text tracking. So pro, so pretty. Nice work! Production is top notch.
when you mentioned return to home, you showed a video of a rear facing return to home. is there a setting that turns the Mavic to Face home while returning? or can you turn it with the controller to face home? you also mentioned when talking about return altitude, that collision detection would aid int he safe return but that didnt make sense if the video you showed of a rear end return to home was the only way to get the drone back to home point. thanks in advance, excellent review!!
Anybody else noticing the height differecne of the two rotor-blades at around 33:55 mark?
When you look closely at the spinning rotor consisting of the two blade-halfs, one of them seems to be quite a bit higher.
Coming from an DJI S800 which also featured the foldable prop design I know, that this can be the cause for some vibation issues and both parts of the prop should be as perfectly alligned as possible and when viewed from the side be exactly overlapping! Stichwort - Höhenschlag
Nice video! Regarding the "shadows" created by the props. Are you recording in auto exposure? Then it might be due to high shutter speeds when the camera tries to correct the exposure. Because the aperture is fixed, the only way for the camera to adjust exposure is to adjust the shutter speed. A high shutter speed makes the camera more sensitive for the "prop shadow"/jello effect. The proper shutter speed should be in the area of frames/s*2. For example, 24fps*2= 48 in shutter speed. A proper graded ND filter should help you achieve correct shutter speed.
Ok first of all I havent heard of Toms tech time yet. That being said, wow. Best full review by far about the magic pro. If DJI wanted to give out future drones for review this guy by far has the most in depth videos out of anyone so far on youtube.
Thanks, I found the video informative, it confirmed much of what I had heard and seen before. This is the best review that I have seen to date. Thank you Tom.
Great review. During this days I have seen a lot of reviews of the DJI Mavic, but y you made, in my opinion, the most serious and accurate review. Thanks to share it with us.
A very well produced video, one of the best of the kind I have seen on RUclips..
Great review! The best I've seen so far thank you! Do the props need to be balanced? If so, how do you balance folding props?
Tom...Awesome video blog. It's gotta be the best I've seen. Keep up the great work.
Awesome Video Tom. Can't wait to get one mavic. But the shipping here in my place was delayed. They should arrived on 15 oct.
Nice video as always Tom. You answered alot of questions I had about the Mavic. Thanks.
Hey Tom! Just want to know the soundtrack you used at 12:55? I want to use it on one of my videos. Thanks
very informative and nice video. I just ordered my drone today after watched this video. I wasn't sure what i was looking for before. Thanks for the video
One of the best videos of the Mavic. But i still miss two things no one mentions.
1. Can you film with it still folded? like a slight bigger handheld gimball?
2. What happends if you fly into a pole with one "wing"? Will it be a little folded so it crashes due to not beeing in right position or is the "wing" in solid position when flying? (with wings i mean the arms that hold the propellers)
Great video!!! You really covered all the spots. Great job!!!!!
Finally someone explained why DJI uses the gimbal cover in their videos and nobody else does. Thanks very much.
Thank you so much for this video, let me ask you a question, if you wanna make a decision between p4p and mavic pro. which one do you go for?
I pre-ordered my Mavic Pro two weeks ago. This is the best review I've seen on line. I do have one question, when flying FPV on WiFi is there much lag time?
Hi Tom, great review as always! Could you possibly go into more depth about the profile, spotlight, tracking features etc? I'd like to know how accurate and reliable those new features are. Thank you
The main issue I've had with the auto Return Home is that its very slow compared to piloting it. Slow as in there are decent delays between each action such as in between reaching altitude and actually beginning to return home.
You can attach a ipad mini the remote, the top corners go into the open slots cut into the handles :)
One note that would have been good to mention (unless I missed it) is that the Mavic is able to transmit 1080p as well as 720p real time video to your phone, while the Phantom 4 is limited to 720p only.
