- 40th birthday parties with mates are always fun, but especially fun when it is organized for an exclusive surfing blowout at WavePark resort in the Mentawai Islands.

Beatiful footage, really angle from sky is awesome!...you dont see that at water level......waves are whateves, i know it cost a bundle to surf there but you get what you get and no one can control mother nature.....double/triple overhead would have been a score at some of those reefs.....amazing hoe many ill nooks and crannies there are that serve up surf....went to indo bout 10 yrs ago.....awesome place

Cheers for the reply...will be looking at a WavePark stay soon . I have viewed the video 3 times and suggested to friends to check it out. On another point, sorry to hear some of the negative comments odd people post about Christie's guide. As a former surf coach, all the insights he has highlighted are sound advice and in fact are basic surf rules 101. Anyway that's my qualified view and from a surfer of with 45 years experience... Personal observation: when you look down on a wave from a high place, it looks easily twice as big as it really is. That may be why some of these guys struggle to keep up, or have to pump as much as they do. I've been disappointed a few times, coming around a headland and seeing waves on a reef below. But then at sea level it turns out they're ankle-biters at best. Surely there are bigger and better days, but most of the video isn't that. Still and all, beautiful colors and glassy waves.

It's been a long time but I still feel every waves. This footage and sound track is so beautiful put together. Drone Captain is pretty darn good too.

Most guests bring their own boards, but we do have some for rent at the resort.

How deep is the water there. If you take a spill do you lose body parts or does it just look that way because thr water is so clear.
Hi Tim, it depends on which wave you surf and how big it is. We have over 25 different waves that we surf which vary from 1ft. - 15ft, If you catch a small wave on a shallow reef, there isn't much water. But if you catch a big wave, you probably will not even see the reef because it will be much deeper. The famous surf guide quote is, the reef is only dangerous when you fall off! Cheers!

wavepark What time of year was this taken? Looks like great fun for lots if reasons. It gets big there too from what I just saw online. Clean with some privacy without huge crowds at every spot. I'll check it out to see what your packages cost. Thanks it's much better than watching another Trump speech. :)

Dexter Thiam Is it dangerous to drive your car? Of course it is but you do it. And no it's not dangerous to surf over sharp rocks it's dangerous to fall onto the sharp rocks which by the way are not really rocks, it's coral a living organism. I hope this answers your question.

Nice weather and all ... but it's not very big ... and kind of soft ... and they only would have put the best waves in this promo video ... there's better places to go for a surf trip.

Hi Jesper. Yes, it is very unfortunate that a lot of coral has died. Mentawai still had virginal coral reefs in the 1980s. Unfortunately fisherman from Malaysia came down with fertilizer bombs and bombed their way through all of the reefs to steal the fish from Mentawaians, who didn't understand at the time what was happening. That practice continued on and off through 2015.
Fortunately, now there are enough tourism businesses in Mentawai that give the pirates a hard time by documenting and reporting the bombing to the authorities who have begun to capture and prosecute the illegal fishing methods.

The reefs are slowly recovering here although there has been a recent coral bleaching event that devastated much of the reefs not only in Mentawai, but as far away as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
At WavePark we have the best house reef in northern Mentawai right in front of the bungalows, and we protect it by installing moorings at Hideaways, our local wave. Our guests enjoy snorkeling right out front, and there are a lot of different species in our waters including fish, rays, snakes, eels, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and the occasional reef shark.
We hope to host you sometime and show you the beautiful parts of the reef that are coming back to health under our protection. Cheers!

Barnaby Flynn the problem with that is that stat is completely irrelevant to how much of a carbon footprint actually adds to global warming. One day of energy production in Beijing is probably more than an entire years worth of flights from London to NYC.
Just goes to show you mediocre waves break everywhere. But the place is paradise. Two guys ripping, ten kooks having a blast. The ratio seems about right. What's the cost per day and I would assume it's all inclusive minus airfare?
Hi Capowacko, that's right, we cater to all skill levels. Cost is $245 a day during high season and $200 per day on the shoulder seasons, not including flights or transport from the mainland to the island. Trips run 10 and 11 days in length, and it is cheaper to come for 2 trips in a row. You can find out more on our website www.wavepark.com

Carrll Robilotta. Your obviously either not a surfer or from the gulf coast of Florida but since you ask..... Overhead clean barrels. Preferably a pitching peak with a down the line fast section leading into a nice barreling inside section. Oh and a nice shore break so I can ride it to the beach. As opposed to climbing back into the boat.
capowacko: I've lived in Maui for the past 27 years and before that, the Caribbean for thirteen years...where do YOU live? You shouldn't assume things about people you know nothing about. And as a matter of fact, I've been surfing for over forty years now. The waves in this Mentawais video are not perfect J-Bay or Burleigh Heads and you're entitled to your opinion about these waves being 'mediocre', but you don't know what you're talking about...the 'wacko' in your name pretty much sums it up.
You don't see guys getting barreled on fast, down the line waves in this video right around the 18:30 mark? Perhaps you should watch it again.

It's funny. I'd love to go there; but why would someone pay so much money to surf with that many people? I can take you to as good and rarely better waves(alas, I won't) with fewer people in my own back yard.
