The Truth About Mentawai Shoulder Season

Off season, Shoulder season, whatever you like to call it. There is a period of time every year, October to March, where the Mentawais turns it down a few notches. The ultimate surfing playground, becomes a lot more friendly, and surprisingly quiet.

Was in the ments in January 2024 and most of the popular spots (burger world, Roxy, maccas and HTs) were next level crowded, 20-30 people out. On our last day there were 40 people out at burgers. When I had done off season 8 years ago it was like you explained but not anymore.

oh man that sucks, i was all invested in heading here in Jan. That said, I was in Morocco this jan/feb 2024 and it was also insanely crowded unless it was big. talking 50+ppl at anchors, half of which were local kids who just took every wave, regardless if you were already riding or not and the older locals were encouraging them to drop in. it was bullshit.

I agree with the chick.. they are heaps more fun to watch. And the kids.. I get bored with hypo over-active,, no style surfing

The wind sucks on the off season. Everyone shows the nice days, but if you go there for a trip, more than half of the days will be shot. Not true that you get them all to yourself. 10 people in the lineup is still a lineup. And worst of all some days are tiny. Between the wind, rain and small days, I went two years and did not find it was really worth the money.

Both off season trips I went on were epic and even too big for me a couple days.
