Hi Pete, we stayed at Resort Latitude Zero resortlatitudezero.com/telo-island-resort/ This was my 6th trip to the Telos and in my opinion they are the best operators hands down. They travel both north and south so you get to experience most of the waves in the region. Hope that helps :)
I have an old school friend that spent most of his adult life in Sumatra. We are now both in our mid 60s and made our first trip to Indonesia in 1980, my friend stayed. He would spend the southern hemisphere summer working in either Australia or New Zealand to replenish his bank account and then disappear for the winter. He learnt the language and as he is part NZ Maori he could pass as Indonesian. He got his living down to a couple of dollars a day. He is now back living permanently in NZ, dead broke, single and as far as he knows childless. Myself I spent my life fitting surfing around a career that I now hate, had a couple of wives, several kids and are almost dead broke. While I wouldn’t deny my kids existence for anything I do sometimes envy the path my friend took.

How easy is it to find a cheap place to stay close to some waves and just do your own thing? Can you hire fishermen to take you to offshore reefs?
There’s telo island surf house but I think you could only surf the waves close to that island

Nice! Our crew was there a month before you and we caught some great waves. We were at Pegasus surf lodge on the island where the Pinnacles break is.

how was the crowds in the water when u went? on avg how many guys in the water every day?
Crowd wasn’t too bad. We surfed by ourselves 60% of the trip. We had 5 on our boat. Crowds would be less in the shoulder and off season too
