Great review. I live in England and remember getting Ninja Gaiden for the Sega Master System when i was a kid. Was blown away with the graphics at the time and would play this for hours with my brothers. Loved saving my special attack points so I could reach 999 and then use the homing fireball attack which made the game so much easier. I still play this game today and its just as enjoyable. Play via emulation on my Z Fold 5 with a bluetooth controller. I never played the NES version until a few years ago and that game was solid.
As a sega kid, i grew up in the early 90s with the game gear. So funny to say, i only knew about the "sega" ninja gaiden on the GG. Only years later i found out, that ninja gaiden also existed on the NES.
I love Master System Ninja Gaiden as much as the NES game, just in different ways. The Master System version is much more of a fun to play romp through a ninja world, where I'd say the NES game is more about the challenge of pixel perfect platforming, still fun of course. You can 100% beat SMS Ninja Gaiden with no deaths, I was surprised I was able to do it upon a 2nd playthrough without even trying, years after my 1st. The key was always having item ammo, the counter doesn't stop at 9999, just the numbers stop going up, you still can collect more ammo. And it's easy to stockpile ammo while still using it a bunch, there's tons. I highly recommend SMS Ninja Gaiden for any fan of 8-bit platformers, it really is one of the better games of that era. Ppl poopoo it too fast cuz the NES game is so amazing and iconic.
One of my favourite games as a kid, when I found out as a kid if you get your scroll (N level) to 999 you get unlimited special abilities, which made the homing fireballs very overpowered! I found myself speedrunning it when the world shut down just for something to do and got a decent time !
they're actually Ghouls, rather than skellies, they still have flesh on them and the "Beer Gut" is internal gases built up within the cadaver, causing the stomach to swell.
What a timing to post this, just at the time where I have myself commited to play through the first NES Ninja Gaiden....been on to that for weeks, just having trouble with the last boss' second phase. But I'll get there eventually! Really interesting to see that there also was a Master System version! Looks quite intriguing too!
I beat the first one a few years ago, and I was stuck at the same spot. Having the sword slash to kill the first one without taking any hits helps. Hang in there.
I legit wish I had even known about the SMS growing up! Despite owning a Game Gear, I didn't even know the system existed! Never once saw it advertised or sold in stores. Would have LOVED the system growing up!!
It's interesting to me that the Master System, Game Gear, or Lynx Ninja Gaiden games still hold their own versus the more well known NES titles. They're all different enough to have a good time.
I was playing the arcade version last week on my phone (through mame) and I struggle to get past the first level. These games are tough. Or I'm just really bad? I've come to realise that in recent years. I always considered myself a hard core gamer because I had so many systems but I'm actually quite rubbish.
@@joshoshea3194 That's funny I was completely resigned to being rubbish but then I demolished Ninja Gaiden 3. Give it a try on a controller or PC before completely giving up. Touchscreen is ultra hard mode.
@@joshoshea3194oof, for my hard core fix I’m playing elden ring on my steam deck..that being said screw ninja gaiden sigma on the vita…never again I want to go through with that. I got my normal trophy and I’m done with that cheap ass game. Who remembers tenchu 😂.
One of the best things about Sega games for me was that while you had hard games they were not to the point of total frustration (I.E. more modern games like Dark Souls) I've always played games for the fun of playing not to have them be all but unbeatable. I've been a Sega fan since I chose the Master system over the NES and owned every Sega console and genuinely enjoyed them more for that reason. This game was no different it had its difficulties but didn't drive you away to quit because you simply said, "I'm done this is ridiculous and no longer fun" Sadly the only Sega console I have left is my Dreamcast and I have a great collection of amazing games. I truly believe people are playing retro games more and more because they now see the real joy of what gaming was all about. Yours is by far my favorite channel and I love the time and effort you dedicate to the content. A huge thank you Sega Lord X please keep it going.
I just recently saw a vid of some prototype NES ports being worked on for the SMS that look REALLY impressive, including Castlevania, TMNT Arcade, and even Link's Awakeking! The vibrant color palette of the SMS makes these games look incredible! The screenshots I saw of the Link's Awakening port look absolutely phenomenal!
Have to say that "Smuggling" track on the stage where you jump between the boats from the GG game is quite a bop. Would love to hear an extended remix with some added variety.
@9:32 Wow, I was wondering why it seemed like I had infinite weapons when I was playing it. I just kept spamming the heat seeking attack once I realized I could. Made the game a breeze.
I feel a bit lucky that the master system and SEGA were a big success in the UK from the 8bit days onwards, I can understand why SEGA only re-release Megadrive stuff as that was their only popular console on a world wide scale, sad really. My friend had Ninja Gaiden on the master system, it was fun indeed.
I beat all 3 nes N Ninja Gaiden games, on the rreal hjardware bakc when they wrere new! no guides, no magazine, just me and my own efforts, and finally puled it off for all 3 games. USA version, the most impressibve achievement.
This game was way too hard for 9 year old me back in the day. Rented it out from my local video shop, struggled with the first stage and felt like I wasted a quid. Looking back, it's a great game.
I imagine a young Sega Lord X who has finished GG Ninja Gaiden, juice still left in his six AAs and staring into the middle distance. Someone give that kid more!
It's neat hearing that you used to pronounce it "g-aye-den," as that's how everyone pronounced it in our circle, too. But to my brother and me, it will always be "Ninja Garden." We used to rent NES games from a small gas station back in the day. And one time when we rented Ninja Gaiden, the old man that ran the store had no clue what it was and called it "Ninja Garden." So to this day, we still call it that. 😆
I just played it on my rg35xx a few weeks ago and it's in my top 5 favorite master system games. Im going to buy one at some point to add to my physical collection
it took us 5 years to clock alex kid as kids and that was 5 years for my brother to do it, i got a sega in 1993 so i was 10 and i didn't clock it till i was 28 and i played it every single day as a kid.... it was so hard as a kid lol only game i ever clocked as a kid was g-loc that was it.

Wow! Ninja Gaiden on the Sega Master System looks great! It really is a shame it never got released in the US! I would have loved to see a release of Sega's Ninja Gaiden title on the Genesis! Maybe even if they had just remastered the Sega Master System version and used the Genesis' extra power for improved graphics and sound!
I actually had the opposite experience and would only know the NES Ninja Gaiden games much later on - instead, I was most familiar with the SMS one via rentals. While I do agree that the NES versions had a brilliant grandeur in regards to storytelling the SMS couldn't quite match, I feel mechanically they are all quite comparable, and that in itself is a triumph. The Sega Master System Ninja Gaiden game looks, sounds and plays way better than the inferior Game Gear port which is nearly always the case with SMS and GG games, if there's a Master System port or even a new game of the same series like here, the Master System has the better one like Taz-Mania for example.
