Andrew is still out for the next week. We shot a bunch of tear-downs prior to his break, but will be uploading a GPU benchmark tomorrow. Expect some case reviews and other content this week!
Gamers Nexus I'm hoping for the H500P and a Vega 64 review. Because I have a 64 and want to get the 500P!
Meshify S please?
Still hoping for a review of the new EVGA fans!
oh no, the PCB is flexing. wabble wabble wabble. lol. B)
Great vid, and I do like them thermal pads and heatsinks everywhere for the VRMs. If only MoBo makers would do remotely similar for there VRMs.
Gamers Nexus fuck ya evga ftw, only company I will ever my VGA from.is EVGA. I have had nothing but good experience with evga
My 1080 Ti FTW3 Hyrbid is still kicking butt in 2024, but the radiator gets really hot and the pump makes loud noises. Going to have to tear it down to see if I can fix the problem. This is still a legendary GPU 6+ years later.
Personally the pump noise drove me crazy, it was way louder than all my case fans combined at idle. I contacted EVGA about that, they told me the pump should be dead silent, that if not it was defective and would be replaced. I RMA'd the card last week, I'm waiting for the replacement. But I don't really have any hope. I went ahead and bought the adapter cable to regulate the pump speed, I hope I won't have to use it but I'm pretty sure the noise will annoy me so much I'll end up tearing the card down and plug the pump cable to the adapter, so this video is of tremendous help. Thank you Steve.
I have no pump noise on mine. Hope your new one is without that issue.
I just happened to find this vid in 2024 while googling how to refill the AIO on this card. I was pleasantly surprised to see a young Steve showing me the ropes! Thanks Steve!
Hey, just wanted to say that you are the last hardware-tech channel I stayed sub to even if I'm less into it this past years. I never really invest anything in the channel other than a few views here and there but I am please to see your patreon doing well.
Nice teardown Steve. It does look very well engineered .Good video.
This does look like a quality part. I liked how they connected the watercooler and the memory with the outside copper.
For build quality I really think EVGA is at the top these days. Ever since the vrm overheating fiasco EVGA really goes to the max
Which model(s) was/were affected by the issue, do you know?
mapesdhs I'm pretty sure it was the older 1080ftws I think. The gamers nexus website will have it in their archives on the site
Thanks! I'll have a look.
Great camera work, I love the swirl to the left at the start of the tear down... but then the wobbly table kinda ruins it :p
Love the video none the less! Thanks for a very interesting dissecting of this beast :)
That GPU is freakin HUGE!
@AVLRECORDS damn and here i am spending my money on performance
*laughs in 3090*
@@SOTB69laughs in 4090 💀
yeah that's the same FTW3 VRM
I own this card. I absolutely love.
Painful to watch it ripped apart lol but I appreciate the work gone into this
Fortunately, these reassemble easily and work just fine afterward.
Gamers Nexus is this the same with the regular FTW3? Non-warranty stickers and ease of reassembly? Cause I'm looking into Plasti-Dipping the shroud and backplate; hoping that it'll not be too much trouble with keeping the warranty intact...
Multi7sevens
EVGA is pretty chill regarding to things like this, before RMA you have to assemble it to it's original state tho.
#smokedoutpositivesquad Thanks! I don't mind having to take it apart again to get it back to normal, so that's fine. Awesome that EVGA is chill about that. Now, I'm completely sold on the FTW3.
Pretty much the same, yeah. Not sure if we did an FTW3 tear-down, but we did talk about it quite a bit when it launched. Same process to disassemble, mostly. Couple extra cables.
I managed to snag this thing for $770 about a month and a half ago through a student discounts and ebates cashback promo. After flashing the second vBIOS with the Strix XOC bios, I was able to get about 2150mhz out of it. Oddly enough, scaling beyond 2100mhz doesn't do anything (and actually negatively impacted results in superposition) so I dialed it back down to 2100. I will say, it's cooling is surprisingly good. Even superposition struggles to make the card hit 50C in an 18C ambient room. I can't even hear the thing running over the noise of my case fans.
Definitely worth $770. I'd say if you can find it for $800 or less, go for it. Otherwise, get the normal SC2 and flash it with XOC and enjoy the same performance. At the end of the day, Pascal is Pascal.
the strix bios will actually get worse results per clock so if it was doing 2100 on the ftw bios then youll get better results. Probably know that already, but in case you don't.
I did not. Where exactly did you hear that it does worse? Is there a reason for it? Most of the guys I talked to with reference cards swore by it. I simply used it to test to see how high I could go with no power limits. On the stock bios with a 127% power limit, I was only able to get about 2050mhz. Scores were a little lower than what I got on the XOC bios as well, so I assumed it helped.
mostly on the r/overclocking discord home of buildzoid and others. There are some threads on it somewhere will post when i find them.

That card is freaking ridiculous wtheck !!! Ginormous 🙌🏻
These cards are crazy! I wonder how long the 10 series cars will be so dominate.
Happy Valentine's day, Steve!
J Landfield did you see the new numbers on the Volta V100?? It's totally different from gaming numbers, but the jump from the Pascal model is looking very promising for their consumer cards built on Volta! In terms of evolving tech it's awesome, in terms of the fact I just spent 850$ on this 1080ti I'm a little heart broken, as I was expecting their next line to just be a slight upgrade with maybe better power handling and not this huge jump that will have me kicking myself in the dick for the next while...
For reference, it's machine thread and coarse thread. I watch your feed more that Netflix. Good stuff.
Still rocking this card today
Coarse and Fine threaded. The screw difference is used depending on need for a stronger hold.
Yeah. The coarse screws go into the plastic shroud, the smaller thread screws go into the VRM heatsink and metal GPU plate.
dayum, the shroud is freaking massive
Mine should be here tomorrow... CAN'T WAIT!
FRESHBRU it's so good man! I was torn debating between this and the standard ftw3 but newegg selling out of the standard ftw3 helped guide my decision. Sure you can push other cards to get around 2100mhz but I LOVE this card bc I'm running it around 2050-2100mhz and the HIGHEST temp I've seen, after an hour or so of maxed out gaming with my home AC off, was 42C!! Sure these 1080ti cards all hit a limit, but this one gets to that limit and chills there instead of being forced there and struggling to keep it!
Also, not even gonna lie...that rgb light on the backplate was a nice incentive to get this over the SC2 hybrid!
Chris Dunn yes! This card was absolutely worth the wait. I don't know what games your playing to get temps that low but it's a wise afterthought to add something like a Noctua fan to the rad to push your temps even further.
Btw this card is incredible!
COULD YOU GIVE US AN UPDATE ON HOW IS IT WORKING SO FAR?
Mine is running just as good as day one,
However for some reason there is an ever present buzzing coming from the pump block and it's pretty loud.
I Actually tried to process an RMA with EVGA but I found out that I have to pay shipping fees to them in addition to if there is something wrong my replacement wont be my old fixed card, it'll end up being some grubby other RMA that someone had their hands on, I won't get a brand new one basically.
Would the foam stop light bleeding (from behind) into the little vent holes adjacent to the led logo?
You may argue that this GPU isn't worth it for most but if you are running an air cooled CPU it is supper helpful to utilize the water cooling solution to more immediately remove the excess heat from the case by setting up the radiator as an exhaust before the CPU. That and it allows you to max out settings in games without a chance of thermal throttling.
Paired a nzxt g12 with my zotac 1080ti, it clocks to 2094 without any manual overclocking, dead silent and stays super cool, so yeah something like this is worth it. (It was also cheaper than buying something like the evga hybrid)
Great to see EVGA reacting to the critics.
"waranty not void if removed"
Im a fool and bought this and a ti SC but now I want to do a custom waterloop, didn't realize how tough it is to take it apart.
awsome job Steve, Keep up the good work
great video, thank u for showing the innards of the hybrid
Steve, your voice is curing my insomnia ^^
I was waiting so long thanks
with the very VERY bad case airflow these days , having a video card and a cpu AIOWC really help by pushing heat right off the case
Nice tear down
Really looking forward to see how much better this is compared ti the SC2 hybrid. Probably not much, but still. And I also dig the shroud design... It looks like the batmobile.
Hey steve the metal plate around the dye was a thing they did back in the gts 8800 series from evga
Did not know that! Guess it has returned. Thanks!
Regarding the "warranty void if removed" stickers. I was told, in no uncertain terms, by XFX that they do NOT apply in North America. The more you know ;)
That thing is HUGE.
that card is huge!
@gamers nexus. This or the Strix OC as best 1080ti? Or another if you can name it. Money no object choice.
I have a ftw3 1080ti non hybrid... thing sheds the gnar HARD... runs super cool and boost clocks itself to 2013mhz and will hit 1984mhz in a 95F room... how you can't recommend I will never understand. Either way though, buy evga people it's an American company and it friggin shreds.
Peter Battle can confirm! Just got mine and its a beast right out of the box.. However if you want to overclock dont expect much more head room
i know its too late........can you change the AIO to a 240mm from the 120mm?
That's a sweet card. I'd love to see noise and thermal measurements on it, Steve! :)
Wish I never sold mine years ago miss this card
Didn't have the right tools....[rising music of a commercial] "....It sounds like you need the Ifixit Essential Electronics Toolkit"
don't think they let you take that on flights, I think Steve has at least two kits tho.
I know you don't want to bench this card, and I fully understand why. Any idea's on how hot or cool it runs?
Holy Christ the amount of thermal paste is ridiculous!
how many screws and which ones are needed to *only* remove the shroud so I can disconnect the pump power cable and plug it into an adapter to mobo fan header?
Lol I like how you pull out your phone to look up the price
Can the water cooler be upgraded to a 240mm or 280mm instead of a 120mm
Is the pump a standard size. My 1070 hybrid pump died. Need to build a custom loop or find a replacement pump. Any insight would be appreciated. Thx
I am definitely using a 1080ti in an upcoming build,
but it's so hard to choose!
Price will have an impact though.
Good video
Just get a Strix.
Batemen Got an SC2 Hybrid
Could you guys do a teardown of a 1080ti Poseidon from ASUS? I've seen so many of these teardowns and PCB analysis vids of yours (which are great btw!) and I'm just curious to see just how this one stacks up considering where its priced at and since I have one in my rig
The Poseidon share the pcb with the Strix. And imho is the best one, you can find the tear down on this chann.
If you are torn on which 1080ti you should buy, get the Poseidon.
Did you hit the power limit when using the slave bios? Many owners are having this issue with the FTW3 Hybrid and air cooled cards. The card starts throttling at 117% power target with the slave bios. The power target should be able to hit 127%. Checked it with the Superposition 4K optimized test. Frustrating from a card that costs this much.
The back plate isnt diecast its stamped to get something like that clean that's die cast would require machining and polishing and would cost a ridiculous amount of money
They told us die cast when we met with them about the initial ICX release.
So which one cooled better? This hybrid air blowed vram or the other one like waterforce headpipe cooled vram?
Hey Steve, what size it the fan in the video card? My fan started rattling and then stopped working?
Is it possible to convert one of these to a standard air cooled gpu with 3 fans? I have a 980ti hybrid and I want to free up some case room for a Noctua cpu cooler and ditch my AIO liquid cpu cooler. I don't think the loop on the 980ti is going to make it easy to squeeze a Noctua in my machine despite having one of the largest cases around.
The white PCB is expensive not because is less produced, it's because the white tone/color is pretty hard to maintain. It's tricky procedure.
Yeah, and lower volume means higher cost.
So are you saying that Blacks are cheap? :O
Would this run much cooler than the ftw3 3 fan version in a small form factor mini itx case?
I have this card, would it be fine to use liquid metal on it?
how close would the evga 2080 super FTW3 Hybrid be to this card from build lay out. ? so i dont have to open mine up to see the differences lol thanks
Picked one of these up a couple weeks ago. Switched over to Slave BIOS for that sweet 127% power limit. Too bad my i5-6600k is holding me back in benchmarks even at 4.7 Ghz.
z3rocool420 doubt it
I just ordered one of these and I was wondering if adding small heatsink to the sides of the copper plate could benefit from the air flow pushed by the 1 fan.
I’m ordering one of these today. It will be in stock on 11/21. Same time my 8700k will be in stock so no biggie.
Can you run two of these in sli? 2x sli is all I’m looking for down the line. Thanks.
is the Gpu pump/waterblock different flow wise from a Evga AIO cpu cooler pump?
I miss the days when EVGA was going for simple and elegant designs
would u recommend this over the cheaper evga 1080 ti sc let me know plz ty for gameing ill game 4 to 6 hours at a time
The size of that thing!
Holy shit, it's massive.
You can never be "cool" enough, until the computer needs a blowtorch! ❄☃🔥
Any idea what the use is of that GND (red) wire? Mine came off the solder :| . LEDs are still running fine though.
Hey Steve! Just curious if its possible to replace the evga 120mm clc with another larger Asetek style clc like a H110
ftw3 hybrid or sc2 hybrid?
the intent was thermal pads..... to dissipate heat from the back of the chipset onto the backing you removed....
Askgn how did u remove the stripped screw from the graphics card?
you need Linus's magnetic cup screw holder!
I just have a different variant of this because my AIO pump doesn’t have a bracket and isn’t diagonal
Could I install this kit on a founders edition of gtx 1080ti
No, there is a specific kit for the founders edition. Check amazon.
Please,
Can You tell me Thermal pads Thikness and Destination ?
Been mining with 1080ti FTW3's for a few months. No problems at all.
I have the 1080 Ti Hybrid FTW3 also and I would like to connect the fan that is responsible for the vrms+mosfet's cooling to the main board and control it. Does anyone happen to know how to solder the pin-out of this properly?
Hey I know this is quite off topic but I was thinking of the pentium g4560 when it popped into my mind that I helped a friend out by giving him an old i3 I salvaged. I was wondering if you could do a second or third gen I3 modern performance test. I know the i5s are super easy to get hold of but just to see how much an I3 with lower Ipc would bottle neck
That card is comically huge, Like one of those giant joke pencils.
Dalton Schwarcz haha no doubt! It was trippy when I was making the switch and had it sitting out on the table beside my old 980tis, it dwarves them so comically!
RTX 3090 has entered the chat
Do you guys miss metric bits ?
How did you get the screw out? I have an old GTX 470 with a screw like that, i want to open and replace the thermal paste
Jose Najera glue your lil finger to it
One way is to use a thin flat bladed screwdriver, rock it sideways to slowly eat away a new notch. Other ways that have worked for me in the past are applying a tiny amount of WD40 around the edge of the screw (use a cotton bud; don't let it get into the middle of the screw of course, as that would just ruin the screwdriver grip), and/or briefly heating and then cooling the screw using a soldering iron tip and an inverted air duster can (the propellant is at -55C).
I just bought the EVGA 1080ti FTW3 for 800$ at Frys, thanx miners 🤮
Actually, you helped to make the price worse.
1080tis we're about $700 at launch so you did fine. Also you card is a hybrid so I'd say that's a fair price
any chance you could do an asus posiden?
why is it 300 usd in sweden ?
Coarse thread, not fat thread, lol. Fine threads will not come loose as easy as a coarse thread, due to vibration. Great video, and sorry, but I couldn't help my self.
Grr I'd like to buy new video card but i dont use PC much anymore
does anyone know if this has a different bios to the normal ftw3?
They are not $850. on both amazon and newegg, They are $1240. um, wtf?
Can i use this hydro kit for 1070ti ?
What
is the fan 3pin or 4pin on the AIO?
2pin
849.99 on newegg ffs I'll stick with my 1080 ftw lol
Brother Ares yes however I've had custom water cooled loops and they are a pain in the ass lol
Brother Ares Looks way nicer IMO as well. Too much AIO tubing looks so ugly
still less then the note 8
A custom water cooling loop is a lot more expensive than the cost difference of a hybrid 1080 ti over the cost of a similar spec air cooled 1080 ti.
After the tear down do you sell your cards like this very desirable EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3?
No. We benchmark, review them, and hang onto them for regression testing and future game benchmarks or comparisons versus other new cards.
Oh well, you can't blame me for trying, especially when it's one of my fav 1080ti.
You guys are my go to source of unbiased benchmarks and informative data, from in depth tear downs to BS busting benchmarks blitzing comparisons you're the best.
Great to hear! Thanks for the support!
I think ICX is definitely an upgrade from the disastrous ACX 3.0 cooling, but good lord the new design is hideous. Looks like it went through a paper shredder and the RBG layout is way worse.
I'd rather they made these things without all the RGB nonsense.
Found the contrarian edgelord that still hasn't figured out how to turn off RGB lights.
Evga had some of the best back plates in the past, now they have plastic junk.
How did you get that screw out? I went and bought a waterblock for my 1080ti but there are 2 screws that I can't get out!!!! I'm scared to use my trustee the blow impact screwdriver for this. Tried the rubber band trick, didnt help. Only thing left to do is use WD40. !#(*&@#(*%$&^@# PLEASE HELP :(
Try very briefly heating the screw with a soldering iron and then immediately cooling it with an inverted air duster can (propellant is at -55C). The WD40 may help as long as you ensure it only goes around the edge of the screw; use a cotton bud, don't let it get into the middle.
1080 FTW Hybrid looks soooo much better!
Voice sounds a little different
The performance is beastly, but my god the card is comically ugly. How did they get to that version when the SC2 and the 1080 FTW were so good looking?
