Instead of pumping it out, why not just have an overflow valve/tube? You would never have to worry about over filling or the level. Just wondering if I am missing something crucial.
Great question. I tried that on my last one, with a 350gph pump and a one inch overflow it constantly was overflowing the tank. I had to put a ball valve on the pump hose and just let the water trickle in.I wanted as much water in and out as possible on this one .It would take a massive overflow hole to keep up with an 800gph pump. A friend Of mine has his set up with an overflow and he has a 4” drain to keep up with the pump. An overflow also has to exit the boat below the waterline in the tank which isn’t possible in my boat unless I let the tank fill almost completely up to the top or cut a hole in the side of my boat. you could simply let it empty into the boat and let the bilge pump pump it out, but then you have 2 pumps running again. Without the pump in the livewell I would also lose the ability to recirculate the water. This has just been my experience, I Hope this answered your question, thanks for watching.
I made one out of a smaller aluminum tool Box but I just throw a pump over the side with no through Hull and I also insulated the inside of my tank with some foam and painted it with that rubber paint that seals it to keep the heat out
Love your idea and how you did everything I'm currently building a catfish boat and was looking for a great idea for a big livewell for big catfish your idea is awesome
Looks like chocolate milk in all our lakes right now. A week of snow and ice, then a week of melt runoff, then a flood. Hope the weather settles down soon.
Amazing job I was looking for a idea for a live well and I just found it brother ill be building mine tomorrow thank you very much be safe and God bless you and your family brother
My buddy who comercial fishes ran a 1 inch pipe down the back of the transom and put a 90 just below the transom facing towards the frount of the boat. And of course the plumbing runs over the top of the transom all the way up over the top of his tank and he put a shut off valve just before where the plumbing dumps into the tank. This allows him to fill his tank by just opening the valve and running the boat at speed no pump required. And he has one pump to pump out the water so he can change it. It only takes a couple of minutes to fill his 8 foot tank tank this way. I was watching this video looking for livewell ideas for my bass boat so I can comercial cat fish this winter
That's a great idea and awesome execution, but My boat isn't big enough to hold an extra 640 lbs of water+ tank. Wish it was, but sadly it's not. I still hope you guys do well in the upcoming tournaments, and the live wells perform as well as they look. Tight lines, and sore lips fellas.👍
Looks great Hagen! If you want more oxygen pumped in look at the flo-rite venturi tubes. What i put in my livewell haven't lost a fish yet and they are super active coming out
Very fine job. Always enjoy your videos. My tank just has a high water overfill. I turn the pump on and let it run as the water gets high it just runs out the over fill. When the boat is running I have a Metal Marine pump kit that has a lift arm and spray head to keep air and water moving. Tank only needs two holes, one for the inflow, one for the over fill.
You can put a float switch on the inflow pump so that if the water level gets too high it will automatically shut off so that your output pump can catch up. No valve restriction needed.
Well that was good timing lol, I set around for a week thinking of the simplest way to bring water in and out and recirculate and this is what I came up with, thank you for watching
Great video Brother I'm in the process of building a live well for my boat and I wasn't sure how I needed to plumb it You pretty much answered my questions Thanks
Love the videos. The video in the snow where the game warden checked you believe it was the video before this one. That’s a good spot in the summer one of my little honey holes!
Great solution. I'd say you can put an overflow opening at the desired water level and only need to pump water in. once it hits the overflow, it will drain out. this keeps you from having to worry it about pumping it out, ensuring that you'll never overflow.
Thank you, here’s an Amazon link to the ones that I used. Thank you for watching 👍 Attwood 4125-7 Adjustable Polypropylene Livewell Pump or Livewell Aerator Spray Head for 3/4-inch Hose a.co/d/eKjmLQ1
I wish I would have included it in the video but I have some filter socks that fit over the pump like a clove to keep trash out of it. But you are correct it’s a great point, thanks for watching man
My pump is mounted under the surface of the water on the transom and it works fine. On another boat I did try to run the pump above the water and pump water over in in the tank and never could get it to work. Not sure if that’s your problem or not. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Thanks for watching.
Working on redoing my livewell as we speak! Would you happen to have a link to those spray heads? I like that idea better than drilling a bunch of holes in some 1/2 PVC. Thanks for the great walkthrough!
@@hagengrubbsfishing is there anyway you can send me a parts list as well. If you don’t have time I under stand but that will be easier than me trying to figure out what to buy lol

Awesome only thing id be worried about is the tool box getting hot and over heating the fish in the sun. Night time golden even with water pumping in and out constant that's a lot of exposed alum soaking up the sun and heat and transferring it into the water.
Absolutely, thinking of putting outdoor carpet on it and wetting it throughout the day. Also going to add a pure oxygen system on it soon. Thanks for watching
@@hagengrubbsfishing thats a great idea with the carpet! O yea oxygen would be awesome to i know you will make sure the big ol cats are taken care of :)
You'd be better off putting an overflow tube/strainer in the tank than having the tandem pumps. More reliable, less power, etc. Look at how fishtank overflows are set up.
My fish always do better on the summer night tournaments to recirculate the same water all night. By morning the water on the fish is 30 degrees cooler then the river water and the fish do alot better. Just a thought
You could add in a timer switch to run a drain cycle and then a fill cycle say ever 15 minutes. 60 second drain and a 60 second fill to turn the water and save on battery
