Be sure to drop a like on this video of you want more A7x & other classic albums featured on the channel!🙌🏻
Im sorry man i disagree, i can’t get enough of city of evil and most of A7X music, they keep it interesting all the way through and makes me feel like most of their songs are shorter then they really are because they really captivate my attention
@@osvaldomedina3724that is absolutely okay my friend - disagreements are healthy🤝🏻
Hahaha. Now you want to learn something that you would've missed while on your toilet break. Whinge , whinge. Don't listen then. I liked you until you whinged about things being too long mate. I'm out.
@@osvaldomedina3724the younger generation don't know how good they have it.
@@DrewFortune97whinging isn't though. A fantastic politician. 😂
The Rev was disgustingly good at the drums. Definitely made A7X who they are today, RIP to a legend 🙏
They all made A7X what they became, Rev didn’t even write for them until self titled, for COE and WTF what many consider their best albums he just played drums. He was a fantastic drummer and an even better musician but A7X was a team thing but everybody always trying to give Jimmy way more credit than everybody else like he was writing all the music the whole time
@@puppetmaster8551 i may be interpreting where you're coming from in the wrong way, but he didn't necessarily say what he wrote was why he made them who they are. his drumming is so iconic in city of evil in particular, and that's what i'm thinking he meant with that comment. i could be wrong, but that's how i took it personally
Also The Rev isnt just only a drummer, all a7x songs by him is just so authentic, outstanding and makes a7x themselves
goat album, didnt share a lot of opinions you had on this one not gonna lie, still one of my all time favorites
As long as we’re still friends?🥰
@@DrewFortune97 yeah of course, opinions are opinions xD i watched the whole reaction on your patreon as well, i did realize the album does get a bit tough if you listen to it as a whole, i never did that really i just always listen to my favorites like sidewinder or blinded in chains, their newest album is wayyyy better to listen to as a whole because of its variety, cheers from germany
City of Evil is minimum top 3 A7X album for most of the fanbase from what I could tell, and rightly so, this album is fucking sick. The length of it is not an issue to me. On the contrary. More music :)
For me it’s sits as their 4th best, but it’s a hard decision to make for sure when nightmare, the stage, self labeled, waking the fallen, and coe all exist at the same time
@@Super_SlowwWTF and COE are the only good records. Everything else is varying levels of mediocre
@@jimmygee3219 every record of a7x Varys in direction, genre category, and taste. You don’t like the rest of their discography? Cool I truly don’t care. But the stage is by far all around they’re best record from an objective standpoint. But that’s a hard pill for fans, or “fans”, like you to swallow 🤷🏽♂️
@@Super_Slowwsubjective.
From a subjective standpoint.
They’re boring. They occasionally write fantastic songs and the rest are just boring filler songs. Even everything after Sidewinder on COE is pretty awful and sounds like they ran out of steam. You can take their entire discography and make a really solid three 12 song records off it, and that’s including the entirety of WTF as the first record.
It's their last album that was any good at all. Waking the Fallen was their peak and this was when the decline started before they started making radio dad rock.
I guess you just had to be there. Every song in this album is iconic to me. Could sing you every part. Like a good fantasy book or movie, it’s always satisfying to jump back into the world. And what a world it is.
That Sidewinder solo is still one of my top solos ever.
The last 2 minutes of the song are probably my favourite 2 minutes of music ever. Syn and papa Gates just dueling guitars is brilliant. I could listen to it forever.
streaming music rewards number of plays. so shorter tracks, more plays. 9+ minute songs are not of the zeitgeist anymore. which is a shame...
This album is probably at top 5 in terms of guitar work of any album released post 2000. Riffs, solo, grooves, leads, melodies, textures, acoustic stuff and obviously the signature guitar dual harmonies that they became known for, it’s all there in terms of its guitar work and as a result this album is super influential.
Like you said, the style isn’t for everyone and it is pretty long, but when it hits, it hits.
Looking forward to seeing you react to more
No attention spans in 2023 huh hahaha
The end of Sidewinder puts me in such a good mood!
Well according to Drew the album should've ended after Seize the Day
70 minutes is perfect album lenght for me idk
I discovered Avenged Sevenfold through MTV/ NFS: Most Wanted. I grew up listening to The Rev and Avenged was a machine with him, Mike Portnoy did really well, Arin did what they told him and now Brooks is the closest we got to a second Rev... I still remember learning Bat Country and later Afterlife, and feeling so happy I could play them.
Absolute slander for Betrayed. Honestly this albums tail end is slept on. Sidewinder, Trashed and Scattered, and Betrayed are some of my favourites
10:40 famous last words before they pump out basically the top 3 tracks of the album lol
tho I def don't think this is an album you *must* listten to in its entirety. it's more of a "hey, here's more like 10 banger songs for our discography", and I generally keep coming back to them quite a lot whenever I'm feeling up to it.
It's an album they themselves admitted they just threw in their craziest and wackiest ideas at the time... and it imo it still defines what kind of band they really are until today (after all, before this album they were just full metalcore / punk with Waking the Fallen & the sound of the seventh trumpet).
Besides, M.I.A. is pretty much universally seen as one of their best tracks ever, so dunno what you're talking about interest "fading" on later tracks. And so is Strength of The World, especially amongst the more hardcore fans. Most likely you'd benefit from just occasionally listening to the tracks separately instead of it all togheter (as it could get kinda overwhelming due to the sheer amount of crazy and technical stuff happening in the background).
either way it was kind of a unexpected reaction, as city of evil tends to be at least liked/respected even by most a7x haters. LIBAD, in the other hand, was 10x more divisive. I'd CoE is easily their top 1 album by general consensus (in terms of ratings, the sheer amount of "classic" tracks, and whatnot)
WtF, Self-Titled, Nightmare and CoE are all legendary albums. The Stage and StST are also extremely good. Tbh the only albums I haven't really liked are HttK and LIBAD.
It's a 10/10 album. Absolute perfection. I grew up listening to this album. I remember getting a 500mb ipod nano and this album being one of the untouchables
that is my #1 album when we're talking about avenged sevenfold, the writing, the chaos, all the layers production-wise is extra and i love it
As a hardcore dream theater, periphery, a7x and Trivium fan I have to say I love long albums. As long as they do it right, they can be incredible. For me this is my favourite a7x album and nothing will change that for me. Nightmare is also long but incredible, i feel like you might like it more than City of Evil.
Check out Opeth if you haven’t yet my guy. Switch out periphery for Opeth and that’s pretty much my top 4 bands as well!
Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park are exceptional and long prog albums
Nice list of bands man
Been waiting for this. U rock bro
Little tidbits from the album: The end solo of Sidewinder is Synyster and his dad going back and forth. His dad is Brian Haner, a fairly well known musician and also tours with comedian Jeff Dunham. The track "Betrayed" was a tribute to Dimebag Darrell from Pantera.
I listened to this in 2005 too and honestly it's better now than it ever has been. Every song is a banger. The more I listened to them the better they got.
My heart hurt a little when you said MIA is a overkill
Ever think that you expending a large amount of concentration listening to the entire album in a day makes you likely to be exhausted by the end of it? That's not how we listen to it and over the past decade of listening to this album, I've never once thought it was too long, except for an individual song in there. Perhaps dividing the album over 2 days would be better.
A7X is so nostalgic for me and many people
Personally, my favorite album is their self-titled, love every single song on it, definitely recommend it!
bro wants to cut the 3 best songs
Not really a big avenged fan but i gotta admit I didn't mind this ! Plus if we are doing recommendations still I recommend johnny booth just because these guys need more spotlights on them their album is out this friday also so I hope you do give them some love. Love your vids!
Been checking some of their recent stuff out on Twitch, very cool band!
Literally a GOAT album. Great choice. Cheers, Drew!
This album defined my early high school years. For real.
Dude I was enjoying hearing your view on the album until you spent the last 3rd of the video repeating over and over that you thought it was too long. This is an undeniable classic of modern metal, surely even if you think that it is too much you can move past that to appreciate all the other things about the songs/album and discuss them instead.
This is a highlight video. You’re watching highlights 😂
I can’t wait for you to do Waking the Fallen
Modern metal classic in my opinion
While I do think for modern listeners going back to listen to this, sure one or two of the songs could be cut. But personally I think it’s such a perfect album front to back. But I can see where you’re coming from, I do really enjoy the 45ish minute albums, but I usually leave those wanting more. But I’m definitely an outlier, especially with today being “That was sick! Alright, next” kind of mindset. Still respect your opinions on it though!
Trashed and scattered is so hard on drums I have no clue how the rev even played it live
They almost never played it live because of its vocal difficulty so he didn’t really have to worry about that lol
New drinking game take a shot every time this man says there’s too much music in this music album you won’t survive
This album is goated. Might be reviewing it on our podcast soon👀
New fan ~ felt pretty much the same way on my first listen, but now it's grown on me a lot, especially The Wicked End
Classic avenged sevenfold album nightmare is up there to
I like a long album as long the songs are good
back then when streaming services isn't there yet, and people need to buy a cd album, it was actually a bang for the buck
and ofc when your songs are limited, longer and repeatable songs are the really good ones
RIP the Rev
This is their magnum opus !
I fucking LOOOOVE this album. When I first heard this back in 2006 when it released it was instant love. They were doing stuff with Orchestras and acoustic tracks and there's some like spanish style guitar work, and all these themes and insane musicality, all 5 bands members doing vocals, just stuff that no one else in the scene was doing. It's the main reason Sevenfold stood out among their contemporaries like Atreyu, 18 Visions, Bleeding Through etc at the time and really put them head and shoulders above everyone else.
This album is so diverse it's insane, and The Rev/Syn as a Drum/Guitar combo was just next level stuff. R.I.P Rev.
Album Masterpiece City Of Evil ✨
The 🐐 record at last
And we're getting an Ashes Of The Wake reaction? *dies from banger*
Edit: I'm SO glad the nasty as hell kick fill on Blinded made the cut down version of the video, top 5 fill for a top 5 drummer
I see strength of the world as the finale and the last two tracks as the credits
I think the best Avenged album to to do next (if you got round to it) would be their self titled album. Lots of variety on that one; probabbly their most experimental before Life is But A Dream.
Can't wait for the other albums
I think city of evil songs are more chaotic, listen to this album compared to The Stage or Life is but a dream it feels more messy but city of evil has a place in my heart.
I think city of evil will forever be my favourite album, really big long theatrical story telling, you mentioned the guitar and the drums both trying to steal the limelight which creates this almost improvised feel. My opinion will be very bias as it was the first album I was fully obsessed with, it definitely shaped me. But as for the music goes, so epic, I think seeing these songs live really left an imprint and that’s one thing you don’t get from just the album, even the entire culture around avenged at the point in time was so infectious.
Great listen along tho, keep it up 👌
The stage is their most mature and in my opinion, their BEST album! Listen to that one for sure!
Edit* Oh yeah, you already reacted to that one and I watched it 😂 mb
Mature, maybe. Best? No chance! Stage doesnt crack top 3 in my opinion
@@LegendaryGoetzTo each their own.
For me personally, I don’t usually listen to albums all the way through and for that purpose, and even then I feel like more of a good thing can’t hurt. I feel like city of evil is incredible. Every song is a banger and I can listen to all of them at any time and love it. It’s my favorite album of all time and MIA is my favorite song. Kind of wished that you could have set aside the length for a bit and really focused on the last couple songs giving them as fair a shot as the first half. No hate though. I do feel that by the time the album hits strength of the world and betrayed it drags a bit. Musically I still think that the each song is an absolute masterclass. I would be interested in a song by song review individually
You have to check out their SELF TITLED album, the best album they have imo.
Only liking because I support. I don’t like AX7’s music at all but The Rev was and still is an absolutely legendary drummer.
Legend❤️❤️
This was experimental for its time compared to previous albums.
Dude spent more time yapping than actually listening...
Can't believe he sat there and yapped about length and boredom over MIA
Nightmare is their masterpiece. You have to check it out.
Yes Nightmare is a Masterpiece
And also A Little piece of Heaven
not as innovative/experimental as LIBAD or CoE, but it's easily their most polished works and imo best represents every side of their style glued togheter.
As a fan of A7x for 15+ years, i do understand u. When this album came out it was absolute fire, BUT compared to todays metal albums/records, it do sound old. So i understand what u are saying. I dont think i would have liked this album as much if i came out in 2023. But for 2005 it was GREAT!
M.I.A is probably my favourite song on the album, actually wait it may be my favourite A7X song overall
I just snuck into my like buttons house and replaced it's toothpaste with hemroid medicine 💊💊💉💉😂😂😂 I came aboard during your discovery of the mighty Gojira..This album was huge when it dropped...The Rev was a once in a lifetime drummer....RIP JIMMY....Sinister and Zacky have become the Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing double guitar threat of this era ✌️🤘
Mrballen intro like mf
@@NUCL3AR991 😂😂😂👍👍👍 Sorry couldn't help myself lol ✌️
Waking the Fallen! One of the best early Metalcore albums of all time
Even though I like all the songs, the album as a full listening experience would probably benefit from dropping Strength Of The World and Betrayed.
The more the better as far as I’m concerned 🤷🏻♂️
Self Titled, hail to the king, the stage, and life is but a dream is their best work
I feel like if you go into it expecting not to enjoy it all that much you just won’t or at least won’t get close to what you could’ve if you didn’t listen to it with that mindset
easily top 5 album of all time for me 🤘🏻🔥🍻
Waking the Fallen is their best album to this day. Gotta give that one a real spin.
It definitely wasn't an accident. Jimmy had an enlarged heart and was in pain, and he had written a song three days prior to his death and the lyrics were pretty much him saying goodbye and telling his bros to not be sad and to carry on despite him passing. It was essentially a musical suicide note. The song is Fiction if you're curious.
A7X has been my #1 favorite band for years, only watched half so far, but Drew I appreciate you listening to their discography. Hope you can see the beauty in this album. Not for everyone, ofc. Just ask you see their artistry atleast, and I wont take back my Like from the start of the video ;) You talk smack though.. Im gonna DM you mate we gon have beef :P
JK, but the drummer on this album, The Rev, was and always will be one of the best songwriters, drummers / musicians I've ever listened to. This man was an animal on the kit, and died way to early. Band kept it running, new stuff is cool, but at my funeral, I swear some "I wont see you tonight" or "Tonight the world dies", even "fiction" will be playing in the church. Ill even teach the organ player the chords before I pass, that sh*t better be good.
please do another album of theirs, any. I'd be so happy
i hope this ages well for him, The second half is great you just have to take yourself out of the metalcore mindset and touch in with the musical side. This record has aged very well to the metal/metalcore projects that have been put out with waking the fallen shouting so we can hear it in the back😂
Never heard someone call this album too long, I thought it could’ve used another 4-5 songs😂
I share the same feeling about this! 😊
😤🤝🏻
5:53 many drummers of our generation realized they wanted to be drummers after this album, i am one of them
Jimmy Sullivan was a great prelude to getting into Portnoy.
I would say the songs on their own are better to listen to than the entire album as a whole. But still a phenomenal album given how young they were
Greeat album! For me was a breakpoint for the band, beacause the previous one are not very good. City of Evil bring the guys to the business, but for me the band evolve a lot in the next records. Nightmare and The Stage in my opinon are the best albuns, you should do Nightmare next, or the white album
I think if you cut Sidewinder through Betrayed, you get a much more reasonable album
ive always said that this album is great, but the songs imo are too repetitive and samey to play back to back to back, especially with how long the songs are. And i gotta say it, the acoustic guitar solo in sidewinder is absolutely the highlight of this album, goes so insanely hard for no reason
I hated this album back in the day. Funny thing is, i love it now. I even bought the cd to jam in the car😂
I do agree that the album gets repetitive! That is why The Stage is my favorite album cause of the variety and guitarwork
Jesus Christ, spending half the video talking about how the album is too long made it really hard to finish watching. Especially when you talked over MIA the whole time which has really great lyrics and tells a meaningful story.
To me this is one of the best albums of the 00s. I agree it's a little tough to listen to in one sitting, but the only song I could stand to cut is Betrayed. All the others deserve to be on the album instead of relegated to a B-side.
What does Pandora’s box and great flood mean on the time stamps?
i love long songs
Next Nightmare album
Im a big avenged sevenfold fan and I gotta agree the album as a whole is a bit repetitive and boring after a while, but the standout songs on their own (Bat Country, Beast and the Harlot, Seize the Day and M.I.A) put the album quite highly in the ranking of A7X's discography
Strength of the World, Sidewinder, and Betrayed, imo, are the weakest parts of the album, so them being more or less back to back can definitely make a full album listen feel a bit long. I feel like its pretty common for bands to have the best tracks near the front of the album, although A7X tends to end albums with bangers pretty consistently. I love City of Evil, but I think its definitely a little bit of an acquired taste. It's incredibly chaotic and high energy, something I wasn't a huge fan of at first, but after a few years of listening to a lot of different music and bands, I came back to the album and loved it for some reason.
❤
sorry but the comments between the crucial parts of some really impactful songs just ruined the experience. both yours and ours.
Personally, I love nearly every second of this album but I can totally get the hate for the length
I feel the length was less for the listener and more for the band which isn't necessarily a good thing
I like a lot of A7x's stuff but this album just hasn't really hit for me like it seems to for many. Not totally sure why. I think its in part the vocals. I generally really like Matt's voice. He sounds incredible on Nightmare and the self titled, but on a lot of this album it feels like he is doing too much of this nasally/whiny thing. Idk. I kind of go back and forth on it. Im still trying to get this album to grow on me tbh, but it just hasn't really been one of my go to listens as far as A7x goes. I realize this is very much a minority opinion since most consider this album a masterpiece.
Saaame here!! I think this album is kind of overrated, i love the band but i never like to listen the whole tracks on this. In another albuns i can listen them by complete, but CoE never hit me as well
Matt's voice in the early days is definitely a love/hate. I personally love his vocals throughout his entire career, but I understand the skepticism. It's definitely not for everyone.
I wanna hear the favorite music of someone who says City of Evil is too long and gets boring lmao
Thank god I have 800 videos on my channel 😂
I understand you were getting tired and/or bored near the end, but come on...
You talked through all of M.I.A.
That should be forbidden.
All of it? This is a highlight video😂
I will NEVER understand people who want less. Hell, you were even saying at track 5 how it was getting monotonous. Then they drastically changed, and you complained because it sounded like a different album. The thought process just doesn't make sense to me. But its just a sign of this generation really (I'm 27 fwiw). Shorter attention spans 🤷♂️ And your complaint during MIA when you said "the song should have eneded there" misses the entire point of the song. That last part ties the story of it together. Its just a damn shame to see thought processes like that.
Mid 00's had longer songs. Looking at you Dragonforce.
Rust in peace reaction pls
are you listening music or just focusing on some talk??? i mean i see only talking, instead of first listening and reacting.
Strenght of the world is easiest the weakest of them. Trashes and scattered might be favorite🤔
Trashed an scattered is awesome, but Strength of the world is one of my favorite songs from a7x😅
Buying an album now is so pointless, they're too expensive and too short comparatively. Beck then we were buying CDs and you wanted to get your money's worth.
It’s a fun album, but it hasn’t aged super well. When I go back to listen it’s hard to pick a song because they all kinda blur together. Fun to hear a 2023 reaction to it!
45 minute album? Figures the generation that doesn’t know if it’s a woman or not, can’t sit down longer than 45 minutes to listen to a record. I know you like tool, most of their records at over 70 minutes long. If 70 minutes feels long then that speaks to the music not being as good in large doses. Avenged Sevenfold kill it almost always, their self titled album is their masterpiece in my opinion. If their song Save Me was on that album it would be the best metal album of all time
Not exactly sure what your point is here John😂
@@DrewFortune97 It does seem like you weren't patient enough with the album. I can agree that longer albums should justify their length with good content. I don't disagree that there is some material they could have shortened or possibly cut and put into another project, but it would help if you cited some ways in which the length detracts from the experience. I'm not a fan of every song on this album and I've never listened to it front to back, but that's mostly because M. Shadow's vocals become grating on my ears after a while, especially in certain songs. What I don't understand is how it's 'overdone'. The instruments are what carries this album for me, and I honestly don't know how simplifying them would improve it at all. That being said, the comments John here made about "this generation" are pretty braindead stupid, and you shouldn't worry about a clown like this guy. Keep up the good work homie.
Obviously this is going to come across as a cheap ‘plug’ ….😂
But in fairness, this video is like 15-20% of the entire video and is missing multiple segments where I go into further detail + the final portion of the video is my review, all of which is on Patreon, lol.
So yeah, maybe it comes across as me losing Patience in the video, that’s because I sorta did. The album dragged for me & of course my reasoning is probably not detailed as well as it could be from the highlight video - but, I’ve listened to longer albums that have kept my patience. Just a preference thing
@@DrewFortune97 all good dude. Cheers from Germany.
@@supahspartan64I felt I gave a great response with a slight troll. I think my generation understands the place of a good troll comment. Chaos keeps order 😉
Talk tok much broski
I'm a fan, but this one annoyed me to death period these short albums are ruining music, they're supposed to be an experience.
I think you really need to give the second half of the album a second chance, and actually listen to it… there was a lot of talking over the music and I get it’s a reaction channel, but you’re doing the music and yourself a disservice
I hear mashy mashy waste your time town clearly queerrrrly
Great job 👏… are you in a closet !??
