      What's troubling me in the final test, is the fact that you tried to boot the console with only the M.2.
      The first thing I would've done, is boot the Xbox with its sata drive and see if the nmve is seen on the dashboard.
      As far as I can remember, the nvme drive on the dev kit is for storage only, it's not used for OS.
      That's why I think if the nvme can work on this console, it would behave like the one on the dev kit.
      Well, at least, you gave it a try, and thank you for that.

  • @ShadowLancer128

    Thank you for finally making this video. It turns out that extra storage slot is a leftover from the Xbox One X developer kit console.
    It was never intended to work on consumer models, and only Microsoft would be able to assist in making that slot work on a consumer console, as only Microsoft has access to the console BIOS & bootloader, and developer OS which are required to make the Xbox One X M.2 slot operational. (or at least that's what I've been told by MS insiders)
    Still, I have always felt disappointed that Microsoft had this capability in their consoles to include NVMe storage back in 2017 and decided not to make the faster storage type available for their consumers. It is what it is, but thank you for going through all this trouble. I've been wondering for a couple years now if anybody could make that slot work!! lol

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Год назад +14

      I don't know why Microsoft decided to ditch that M.2 slot because in 2017, this console could have been a game-changer, leaving Sony far behind.

      @@ElectronicsComputers Probably mainly because the storage isn't what's holding the One X back in the first place. It's that turd of a CPU based on the FX (Faildozer) architecture that's the biggest bottleneck. That's also why you barely notice any difference between the stock HDD and a SATA SSD (or even games on a USB SSD)... the storage system is barely utilized, meanwhile the CPU is pegged most of the time trying to deal with games

  • @lieutent2654

    It's possible there are missing midpoints for the data connection off the slot. You could potentially compare the general area of the board around the slot to the dev kit on both sides. Perhaps even be able to check continuity on the data lines from the slot to other areas on the board. The former would give you the best shot, especially if you could get your hands on a dev kit. It's awesome you put this to the test though!

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Год назад +6

      Without having a schematic, reverse engineering is extremely time-consuming. I've checked the data line with the scope, and I'm pretty sure that the problem lies somewhere there rather than with some firmware limitations. One missing tiny capacitor or resistor could make a huge difference.

    • @farmerJ-zp9dj
      @farmerJ-zp9dj 4 месяца назад

      I'd get or borrow a Dev unit & inspect the data & trace lines top and bottom sides this will give you a clearer indication of what's missing ( trace , cap etc ) .
      The Dev unit's NVME SSD is used for storage only , also I think U might have to put the retail console in Dev mode to access the SSD .
      Hopefully someone will figure it out for use on a retail console .
      Great work 👍

    Big thumbs up for giving it a shot, would have been hilarious if you succeded and also made some serious waves..
    but at the end of the day, its not that big a miss.
    running my One X with NVMe drives, as these 10Gbps enclosures a weirdly cheap, even those with displays are like sub20bucks and 2 TB NVMe drives, cost like 40 bucks so relative cheap to stack up in ext fast storage for One X..
    tested loading times, vs Series X and running the exact same 4K games, where was no difference, even though its handled by a sata3 controller, those fast accestimes does wonders for pop in and loading times and frame time spikes.
    as far as I can tell One X will tolerate 4 different drives all at once, and you can even mix & match, so 30% of a game on one drive and 70% on another.
    seems One X will do 26TB SSD storage.. 2TB internal + 3x 8 TB external.
    Wouldnt have taken much for Microsoft, to populate that M2 slot and just let it be user-optional for upgrades.. but then again, such vendors, usually dont like to send such mixed signals not least hence warrenty etc..and having end-users digging around on the f''ing motherboard, and why they made it plug and play for Series X with that horrendous properitary drive std..
    but its a blast to just use external SATA3 SSDs or NVMe SSD drives for One X now that ext. SSDenclosures are so cheap-.

    If as a feature it was officially removed then perhaps it would be redundant even if the solution had faster thruput.
    Otherwise it would just make more sense to tell Microsoft to please update their Xbox One and Xbox One X firmware to be compatible with 2TB, 4TB and 8TB HDD and SSD however they would probably just ignore such a request much like how they ignored the stupidity of their online log in requirements just to set up the Xbox One/X from a reformat or a new hard drive replacement kinda like they just expect their customers to dump the old console in the tech garbage bin and buy their new disposable bucket shaped console.

    • @apollosungod2819

      I saw your video on the Xbox One X to SSD but it was only for 1TB.
      I read conflicting information about installing a 2TB SSD in the Xbox One X that calls for using scripts which sounds ridiculous.
      On my PS4 Pro and base PS4 I can just purchase from a 512GB SSD to 1TB to 2TB to 4TB and Digital Foundry has a video from years ago where they used an industrial grade 8TB SSD in the PS4 Pro... yet for Microsoft it's jumping through hoops to open the system up just to change the HDD from the puny 1TB to a more reasonable 2TB or if you have a large collection of games to a 4TB plus the fact that Microsoft's firmware kinda gets in the way in how they partition the drive space.
      Also I want to upgrade the original Xbox One from 500GB HDD to at least 1TB and use better quality thermal solution so maybe I'll make a video but it's just incredible how it seems like too many hoops need to be jumped over for Xbox One and Xbox One X.
      Basically I feel like the Microsoft Xbox One firmware is just incompetent or something idiotic like that. Like they intended for people to just dump their Xbox consoles to the garbage bin.

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  5 месяцев назад

      @apollosungod2819 Like I said before, Xbox One X officially supports 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB HHDs and SSDs. Just put it inside and install Xbox OS. If you install a 4TB drive, the console will recognize it as a 2TB one. Then you have to remove the drive from your console, connect to a computer, and use any software that works with partitions, extend the User Content partition to maximum available space. And that's it.
