I tried this tonight. Mine turned out great thanks to these clear instructions!! I embellished mine with black ribbon and added a decorative black and silver button.
What a wonderful instructor you are. Thank you for sharing all of your talents with everyone. You make that Walmart Rope look like a clay bowl. I just think it is amazing. So I went to Walmart and purchased the rope you said to and I am now going to try to do what you showed us all. Thanks again!
Your bowls are just beautiful!! And you are an excellent teacher. I'm so glad you made the point to not pull the rope. I can see how that might make the bowl wonky. Ironically, I found the cord at Walmart today before I watched your video. It's up to $4.97 for 50 yards now. But that is still not bad for such a beautiful bow. I'm going to try my hand at it tomorrow!! I'm also going to check out your instagram. Debbie
I've watched many videos and your tutorial beats must! Particularly helpful is your explanation for shaping the sides. Your finishing leather piece give the basket class!
Great tutorial, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've made a few small things and gave them as gifts. Everyone loved them. It's so much fun to make them.
What a wonderful tutorial! I spent half a day looking at tutorials for making rope bowls and this was, by far, the best. Thank you so much for posting and demonstrating how to complete all the steps. I made two bowls this morning. The first was from a soft cotton clothes line I had purchased at JoAnn's (this one was beautiful, but not very sturdy as you said in the video), and the second was made with the clothes line from Walmart. It is gorgeous (for a first try!) and very sturdy. I am hoping I used the right rope: 3/16 in. X 100 ft. It is cotton/polyester blend and says it holds a 90 lb. working load limit. I was very afraid to place it in my sewing machine because it felt very hard, but once the end is cut off, there are fibers in the center that are wrapped by the cotton. This brings me to my questions: 1. Is there a trick to starting the coil so that the fibers don't show through the zig-zag stitches? 2. Is there a way to join a second roll of rope to the first if I wanted to make a big basket? 3. Have you tried any of the colored diamond braided clothesline? It seems like they would also make beautiful bowls. 4. Is there another way to end the project without making a loop or using the leather? I have experimented with making a few coasters but am not really satisfied with the end result. Once again, I love this tutorial. Thanks so much!!
Deborah Bishop thank you so much for your kind words!! I’m so happy to hear that your bowls were a success. I haven’t tried the diamond braid rope, if it doesn’t stretch it may work. The brand you got from Walmart is the kind I use. When I start the coil at first I trim the inside fibers as best I can and tuck the end under the center of the coil just a little bit. There are fibers on the bottom of the bowl sometimes, but the usually aren’t visible inside the bowl. I had a friend tell me she trims them back inside the rope a half inch. Try that and see if that helps. Yes, you can join two bunches of rope. Zig zag them together on the ends and then as you sew the bowl it will help keep them together. I haven’t seen another way to end the bowls other than the loop or leather. I wonder if it would work to cut the rope on an angle and tuck it under the previous row and zig zag. If you figure something out, let me know!! I hope I answered your questions. Happy sewing!!!
Thank you for the quick reply and for answering all of my questions. To keep the fraying down, I tried zig-zagging the end of the rope. It didn't stop the fraying, but it did keep it down so there were not any fibers showing through. Today I tried using the colored 550 Paracord (it is 5/32 in. X 50 ft. and is a polyester blend; cost is $3.94/50 feet). The bowls were very sturdy and very easy to sew, just like the clothesline. The paracord has a little design on it and so creates a pretty little bowl--although the design on the bowl is not a consistent shape when the cording is sewn together. I am now practicing with the clothesline...my bowls are really good, but they don't look as smooth as yours. Thanks again for the tutorial and the quick response.
Your bowls are beautiful! Thanks for all your tips on making these rope bowls. I'm making my first one and it's not turning out so well and I have to go back and rip the seams out. I'm going back to the drawing board now.
Am interested in making a rope bowl and have watched a lot of videos, and I agree with a past comment that your video is quite complete! Thank you so much for taking the time to make it!! Will you make another video showing how to make a bowl with those lovely handles?
It’s your lucky day!! I already have one posted on my channel here is the link…or you can go to my channel. I posted it shortly after this video, I think 6 years ago. ruclips.net/video/s1Mnt-sjsj4/видео.html
What do you set your presser foot pressure at, "0"? Are your feed dogs disengaged? Thanks for all the intricate details you've provided. They provide a solid basis for anyone who wants to make a rope bowl.
Your tutorial is wonderful, love your different shapes of bowls. They’re so perfectly shaped. My rope (it’s piping) is not stable enough so going to try some rope for clean lines such as you’ve shown. It’s great info. I’ve had problems with my bases curving so if you could suggest (I may already know) if I am using too much tension or what else could I be doing wrong? I’m envious of your shapes and how consistent they are! Thank you!
Hello, Glad that you find it a useful tutorial. If you pull the rope at all when you’re sewing it can stretch it and your base won’t be flat. Also, if the piping is stretchy that may contribute to it as well. The rope I’m using doesn’t have any stretch at all. Hope that helps. 😁
This video is great, I have been watching other tutorials, and although they are great, I love this one. I have made quite a few bowls and I keep struggling with the same issue, my bowls look great, but I can’t seem to get them deep without them being more flared out instead of up and down. Could you please tell me what I may be doing wrong. Thanks
Thank you!! Happy New Year! It could be your rope, unless you pull on the rope as you’re sewing. Some ropes are floppy and not woven tight enough. I made a large basket with other rope, and it was so floppy I ended up throwing it away.
It’s leather, and I got it at JoAnn’s, but I’ve seen the same thing at Hobby Lobby cheaper. It comes in a piece around 4”x7”...that’s a total guess. It could be a different size.
Great tutorial! Thank you. I’m a beginner and would like to make a 3 bowl set. Do you think I’d be better, as my first project, to start with the smallest size first or the largest? TIA
I would probably start with the regular size...probably the medium size, then make the bases smaller and bigger for the other sizes. Hopefully that helps. Thank you!!
Hello everyone! These are awesome baskets! Thank you! May I ask, do you need a special machine to make the rope baskets or a plain house machine would do? TIA
What grabbed my attention to watch was your machine. I have a Bernina 1080 and I I've been wondering if it can hold up to a thick and sturdy project like this. You said a size 16 needle. Is it a top stitch needle or something like a jeans needle? Thank you for telling us the stitch length and width you used. Very helpful.I kinda giggled after you said "medium" speed and it looks and sounds like you are going really fast. LOL Great Tutorial.
It’s just a regular size 16 needle, which can be considered a Jean sized needle. I’m not pushing my petal all the way, even if it may look fast. It’s hard for the machine to do the zig zag if I go too fast. Thank you!!
Thank you so much. I really apreciate your lessons. I have a question. When I do something tall, like 16 inches or bigger the diameter gets smaller and smaller and I can’t help it. What I am doing wrong? Sorry for my english ... I just speak spanish 😁
I’m not sure. If you start out with a base (the bottom part) that is 7”, you should be fine. It also depends on how you hold the bowl as you sew. It’s hard to know without watching what you’re doing.
Donna Rich I actually have a video just for the handles... ruclips.net/video/s1Mnt-sjsj4/видео.html if that doesn’t give you a link, go to my channel and you should be able to find it.
Yes, I get it at Walmart. Which is a superstore that we have here. I’m not sure where you’d get it in Canada. Maybe a hardware store. This rope is tightly woven so that it is more stable. I show the details in the beginning of this video. I even share what the packaging looks like.
Thank you!! I use the entire package, which I think is 100 feet. The only one a cut a little off of is the one that I sew handles on...there is a separate video just for handles...also on my RUclips channel.
I used a Perma Core A&E polyester thread…that I use on my longarm quilting machine. Honestly, any good quality thread should work. The one I used is a 30 tex…which is the weight of the thread. I would also use Omni thread as well.
I longarm machine quilt, so I use thread that I can use on my quilting machine from a wholesale supplier. Superior Threads has great threads you could purchase. I suggest their Omni thread.
Sorry, I didn’t understand your previous comment. I know you can’t pick you zig zag size...but maybe having a shorter stitch length could help. I would think if they don’t let you adjust your zig zag size, that the zig zag would be at the biggest size possible. I would contact a brother dealer and ask them to help you. I’m not familiar with that machine brand. Good luck!
@@QuiltingIt I am using 100% cotton clothesline stretch resistant....I made a bowl tonight and it came out ok but it doesnt seem really firm..do you have a email i could email you a picture? Thank you for answering my question!
Wenona Tweeddale are you pushing the bowl through your machine or stopping and starting fast a lot? After I get going, the machine does the work, and I just hold it lightly. If you do the same, maybe it’s your machine. Either it has a hard time with the rope or it doesn’t do constant stitches. Sorry your struggling with that.
Hello ! Thank you very much for the tutorial. But when I try this I don't ever manage to have a 90° angle ! I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Even if I keep the basket straight, it's always ending with a 45° curve. Do you have any guess why ? Thank you !
Camille Gandon glad you like the tutorial! When you start to raise the base, raise it higher than you think and maybe only go around twice before raising it higher. If your base is bigger and the angle that your raising isn’t sharp enough that might be the reason. It’s all in how it’s held. I’ve wanted to make some bowls with bigger bases and the sides just don’t work as great. I sure hope that helps! Wish I could be there in person to help you figure it out.
I love your tutorials. You have started me on a new hobby. I would like to know how you connect two pieces of cord together? I have tried several different ways but none seem to satisfy me. I have made 15 bowls so far and still going strong. Thank you again for such wonderful tutorials.
Bettie Hammock thank you!! You can zig zag two rope ends together, but then you’ll see those frayed ends, unless you cover it with fabric. The bowls I make are only one package of rope. Good luck!! Glad you found such a fun hobby.
Love your bowl, and the tutorial, new subscriber, I do have a question though, you said to go around 3-5 times to start your curve, how do you know where the start row is to start counting from there ? And do you do the 3-5 at each level Thank you.
Marina Sithideth they all took one thing of rope. The biggest one with the handles has a smaller base, and angled sides. I actually trimmed a little off before I finished so the handles are even. I did a separate video for the handles, it’s also on my channel.
I use the entire package of rope for one bowl. No matter the shape, I use the whole thing. If I add handles, like shown in my other video, I trim off a little rope towards the end to make the handles even. Look at my channel to find the video for the one with handles.
@@QuiltingIt thank you for getting back to me. I have ordered my rope and can't wait to start. I am in Scotland and we don't sell these packs of rope. Lobe your videos x
The rope thing is tricky. Been to local wal mart and did not see this. Checked Tru Value and all they had was stuff with a nylon core. Could you provide more details on this rope in terms of content, size, brand? Cotton poly - but not a poly core right? A blend of fibers that the rope is made out of? Very nice tips and video otherwise.
Mary Schatz... I just like the Walmart brands that I showed. Otherwise the rope is stretchy. I wonder if you should look in the laundry section of your Walmart. Sometimes they only stock 3-4 at ours and they are out a lot. If it’s still not available. You could request that they stock it. Everywhere else I looked, I found stretchy or nylon rope.
I love your tutorial. So much so that I had to try it for myself. I have to say that making these bowls is very addictive but I'm having problems with the base of the bowls. When my circle gets to around the 10 cm mark it starts to curve up and I end up having to make a smaller bowl that I want to. Do you have any tips on how to keep the base flat?
Thank you! When starting the curve on your bowl, start with only a slight lift of the base and go around a few more times, then start lifting it more and more to get the sides. There are some bowls that I’ve wanted to be bigger, and they end up being too big. Really it’s just playing with how high you lift it and how many times you go around at the same lift. I hope that helps. Glad you’re enjoying making them.
I’m sorry, I didn’t see this until now. It’s just a clothesline rope that I get from Walmart. I don’t currently have one to see the brand name. Their rope is the only tightly woven rope that I’ve found.
BeatlesFanSonia I’ve never made a lid. But you could just make a base of another rope bowl...to the size you need it and only round the corners a little bit, when it’s as big as the bowl. Then face it upside down, so the lip is facing down over the bowl. I don’t have a need for a lid for mine, so I wouldn’t make one. Hope that helps.
BeatlesFanSonia at minute 3:00 of the video, I show a trivet that I made...when I messed up. It has a little curve on the edges, which is what I would do if I were to make a lid. I wouldn’t finish the lid off with a loop. You could finish the end like the bowl, with the leather.
Se ve muy completo tu video, pero no entiendo porque no permites los subtítulos en español y la traducción de los comentarios, hay muchos más idiomas que el inglés, perdón pero me parece un gran error
I don’t know how to change that, and that it was even possible. RUclips should just allow it on all videos. Sorry I don’t know Spanish well enough to do any videos in Spanish.
Beautiful bowls. I was able to get the rope online at Walmart. 😊
That is awesome!
I love the look of these bowls.💕 I can't wait to get some roping and try this.

JoAnns, but I’ve seen it cheaper at Hobby Lobby.
Can you please comment on the hypertough rope. Is it all polyester? How does it sew? Thank you
If I remember right, it is 100% polyester. It sews great!!
I just saw at the beginning of the video I said that the rope is a cotton poly blend. Sorry, I didn’t have a thing of rope to look at.
How do you join the rope if you run out please?
Brenda Haugen you can zig zag the two ends and keep sewing. I’ve never done that with my bowls. When I run out, I’m done.
Thank you so much. I was thinking more of making a larger tote bag with it as well and I think it might require more than one spool of it.
Excellent video.Thank you.
Thank you so much!!!
Jan F Are these bowls washable?
I’m not sure, I have never washed one. I would think that you’d lose the shape of the bowl.
One of my other favorite RUclips crafters, Karen of Just Get it Done Quilts recommends cutting each end at a 45 degree angle. I’m going to try that.
Love your bowl, and the tutorial, new subscriber, I do have a question though, you said to go around 3-5 times to start your curve, how do you know where the start row is to start counting from there ? And do you do the 3-5 at each level Thank you.
Terry smith you can use a pin to mark the bowl, if you’d like. I just guess. Three is plenty, just keep it steady as you sew.
Thank you for such a quick response.
@@QuiltingIt is it 3 more rows each time when changing the angle of the tilt ?
@@sewbeeit88092 to 3 times. I don’t mark it to know the exact number of times I went around.
Hi...nice job. How many feet did it take to make the biggest basket? Thanks.
Marina Sithideth they all took one thing of rope. The biggest one with the handles has a smaller base, and angled sides. I actually trimmed a little off before I finished so the handles are even. I did a separate video for the handles, it’s also on my channel.
Thanks for the reply. It took me 2 Wal-Marts to find the rope. So excited to get started.
Can you tell me roughly how much rope you used to make your basket. Thank you x
It is in the hardware section with other ropes. "Diamond Braid Clothesline" Item # 695768070095 it does have a poly blend inside. The greatest to use.
🤩👏👏⚘
Glad you’re enjoying making them.
make sure you're not pulling on the rope or lifting the circle that you start with...keep it flat until you want to do the sides. hth
Can you also tell me the name of the rope as it's hard to read the first word on the top one Please :)
I’m sorry, I didn’t see this until now. It’s just a clothesline rope that I get from Walmart. I don’t currently have one to see the brand name. Their rope is the only tightly woven rope that I’ve found.
What kind of thread do you use for this rope ?
I use a Perma Core thread, but really most threads should work unless they are too thin. Mine is 30 tex in weight.
Thickness of the rope u r using?
It’s a little less than a 1/4”.
Where do you buy your leather.
Lulynn Foster Joann’s...but my sister has found the same leather for cheaper at Hobby Lobby.
How to put handles on a basket?
Here is a link to my video where I show how to add handles to the bowls.
ruclips.net/video/s1Mnt-sjsj4/видео.htmlsi=YNPl53_rFY2w47BY
How thick is the material?
About 1/4”.
I would like to know how to make a lid.
Walmart has gone up to $4.84 in price now.
Type of rope plz is it macrami
No, it’s not. Watch the video, I share which rope I used.
Quelle est le prix de la machine en dh
!!!!!!!!!!
I just returned 4 packages to Walmart as the label said it contained a carcinogen called Benzine. I didn't want to sew this so close to my face.
This rope is made from natural cotton fibers!! How could it have any carcigenic chemicals in it??
@@wendywilson1736 Read the labels yourself.
Thanks for reading the labels & posting your findings. I got cancer due to overexposure from those Benzine-like chemicals. 👍
