- On today's episode of Trippy Food, Val makes a pilgrimage to New Haven, Connecticut and the self-proclaimed birthplace of the hamburger, Louis' Lunch. Louis Lassen began putting a grilled beef patty on white toast back in 1900 - let's see if it can go toe-to-toe with your favorite!

I'm so jealous. I love how the meat is the main highlight and it's cooked medium rare. People bashing this place because of the simplicity and the bread etc just don't get. It's about the meat.
You get it. Solidarity, brother.
Cooking ground beef less than medium is risky. I’d pass
Thanks Doug, I’m really enjoying your tutorials on dry cleaning
You’re quite welcome, Stan. You have no idea how quickly and easily you can ruin an Armani suit.
@@TrippyFood those mustard stains are just murder to get out!
@@drycell183 wine is harder.
Man...I badly want to try this place. Those burger sandwiches look awesome and I appreciate the white toast instead of the omnipresent burger baps.
It's simple, which shows off the quality and flavor of their burger. It's definitely worth going out of your way for.
Delicious 🤤 Simple pleasures are the best!
@@HARLOWETV I was in New Haven back in 2009 and didn't know of this place. I have since lived in regret.
@@vinaymulukutla358 LOL Funny I was there around that time as well. Fortunately for me, the folks I was with were natives and took me there! I was blown away!
@@HARLOWETV Hahaha...That's crazy! I'm glad at least one of us didn't miss out on it at that time! You seized the advantage. I did go to the burger place The Educated Burgher though. Not Louis' Lunch by any means but it was pretty awesome.
Although Louis’ Lunch claiming to be the place that invented the hamburger is an argument that can go on forever, I do like the simplicity of their burgers. Nothing too fancy or unique aside from serving burgers on toast instead of buns. Burgers on toast sound like something I should try one day.
I doubt they invented the hamburger as a sandwich, but there's no denying that they are the oldest surviving restaurant to do so. One of my favorite burger joints in the country, and I've tried many. I think cooking them in a vertical gas grill makes a difference as well.
It's not *really* an argument though.
There are dated, published descriptions of grilled patties in sandwiches, bearing the name "hamburger", from before Louis' claim of invention.
I've been there many times. You can't argue with the simplicity of the burgers, or the menu. (The potato salad is okay. Haven't tried the pie.) If you find a formula that works, stick with it.
Yeah, I don't waste time with the sides there. One of my favorite burger joints in the country.
Great channel !! Subscribed 👌
Thanks, welcome aboard!
Cool! Always have wanted to go there.
You should go!
Not worth the price
Bob Felix I tend to disagree. This nearly half-pound, medium rare, high-quality burger with a legacy to boot was most assuredly worth around $6
@@TrippyFood to me it is no better than most restaurant burgers. It is just a big tourists trap so you can say you ate where the burger was invented.
Bob Felix fair enough; you do say “to me”. There’s something to be said for being able to say you’ve been to the place where the burger was invented, and the fact that it’s a good burger to boot. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try a place like Ted’s, especially where their double-burger is about the same price. Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it, too.
They are BOMB!!!!!
Right?
One word. YUM!
Old Guy In Colorado Yum indeed.
That looks good
kamdaddypurp it’s life changing in its simplicity
I'm here after Daym Drops review..., it's like night and day.
Don't know what to tell you. I call it like I taste it. I haven't seen his review, but I'm sure there's lots of shouting and dramatic pauses.
Are you from the New Haven area?
Bob Felix no, I grew up in New England but I’ve lived all over the country (I’ve been on the west coast for about 15 years)
@@TrippyFood when you were here in New Haven did you do any pizza reviews? I didn't see any on your channel. We do have 3 of the best in the country here.
Bob Felix yes, we visited Frank Pepe on a previous trip: ruclips.net/video/oQokPErMGlc/видео.html
Wow silver fox 😎 that 🍔 looked delicious 👅 💦 I'm salivating ! I love my breads & buns toasted ! Very interesting to see the OG way of making a delicious 🍔 I'm hungry now ! Another awesome video ! 💛
1WickedAngel1 if you get to New Haven, this is a “must-try”
Trippy Food Definitely ! Thank You ! Have an awesome weekend silver fox ! ❣
I understand that New Haven also has pizza that rivals even New York City pizza. Very underrated food scene there...
William Ellis yep. Check this out: ruclips.net/video/oQokPErMGlc/видео.html
Hey guys, I am at the place right now to see if those burgers are as good as they say they are. I'm waiting a bit longer because I like mine well done.
Cool. Let us know what you think.
@@TrippyFood The burger on toast? MMM! Delicious. Perhaps the best hamburger I've ever had. Really good. The Lassens weren't kidding around.
@@tyrese3745 Right? Keeping it that simple, you gotta have a good, quality burger. One of my favorites in the country. If you have time, head up to Meriden and try Ted's Restaurant's steamed cheeseburger. Completely different animal, but also outstanding.
@@TrippyFood I'll do that in the near future.
@@tyrese3745 Not sure if you saw it, but here's our recap from Ted's: ruclips.net/video/HpuQnfiH6Q8/видео.html
Go to Ted's in Meriden much better. Home of the steamed burger
Bob Felix a steamed burger is different; it’s a matter of personal opinion whether it’s better. I was at Louis’ Lunch from a historical standpoint, but the burger itself did not disappoint. You do, however, make a good suggestion and the next time we are in the area, we will visit Ted’s
Bob, we made it out to Ted's for the steamed cheeseburger, and while both were exceptional, I can't say the steamed one there was any better or worse than the gas-grilled one at Louis' Lunch. Two different animals; I'd recommend both. You can see the Ted's video here: ruclips.net/video/HpuQnfiH6Q8/видео.html
its good but i dont know if its worth almost 7 bucks for just the burger.Maybe once in a while
netrioter it’s at least worth once for the historical significance, but it’s also an excellent burger
$7 - $15 for a burger is a normal price if it’s not from a fast food chain or generic diner.
Won’t ever eat a burger without condiments. I mean seriously it’s just food you’ll shit it out anyway you eat it.
Nick H always try something for the first time “naked” so you can see how it tastes. After that, put whatever you want on it.
I never put condiments on anything, dry burgers and sandwiches. Any tiny amount of mustard and ketchup erases every single other flavor. I would get meat and bread if I went here, but I would go for the non rare version.
Nice video. I respect the hustle brother. greetings from Germany.
Thanks, Germany!
I really do get it “tradition”. 🍔 I always keep a condiment in my wallet just in case.😂😂😂
***rim shot***
Put it on at your own risk if you must but they'll probably ask you to leave if you get caught.
Vinay Mulukutla that’s ok as long as I am not banished from the restaurant forever.😂
@@Jimfromearthoo7 Yeah Man...don't think they're that bad. I suppose you can get your food to go and then put whatever you want in it at home or in the car.
Reminds of Conan, when he pulled out that little pack of Ketchup for his Steak in a fancy restaurant in Italy
A menace owner, horrific service and shockingly stomach turning hamburgers
You must have been to a different Louis' Lunch, or are pissed off that they don't have ketchup...
Didn't know coffee was a dessert?!
"Coffee dessert, yes, you know it's good news"
lyrics, "Savoy Truffle" (George Harrison)
Wouldn’t it be better if the bread slices were a bit think or is it just me
It would be nice on Texas toast, yes, but remember, they're doing it the way they did around 1905 with your garden variety white bread.
Deeeeeelish.
Yep.
Just don't ask for ketchup.
Fine by me, I never put it on a burger anyway.
i've seen this comment section praise this burger and i've seen others that see it and find it repulsive...i really have to go there and try it for myself at this point. im not one to complain at all about medium rare burgers so id probably enjoy it. greetings from the philippines
If you go, let us know what you think. I think many people's negative comments are due to the fact that they serve the burger on toast, and don't serve condiments (like ketchup). I don't think they're focused on the taste and the simplicity of the burger. Opinion I guess - let us know what yours is.
@@TrippyFood with what's going around us getting to CT is wishful thinking right now 😂 someday. it's on my bucket list of restaurants. the park's finest is probably still #1 tho
Obviously a tourist gimmick
What part, the "no ketchup" policy? Doesn't bother me, I don't put ketchup on my burger anyway.
Someone tell Jeff bezos just sell one item.😂😂😂😂😂
Jim Fromearth might not be so tasty being shipped across the country
Trippy Food laugh when you say that.lol! What about Whole Foods?😎
Jim Fromearth they’d have to use the same equipment
Trippy Food why not? And be located near universities like Yale.😎
This is not the first hamburger sandwich It was served at the World's Fair
I suggest you take it up with their marketing folks.
Soggy bread not impressed at all
That’s too bad that you had a bad experience there - I’ve been several times and it’s always been exceptional
@@TrippyFood perhaps I'll give it another try. Thanks 👍🏻
If the meat is leaking, take it home and put it on a spare slice of bread.
Watch daym Drop for an honest Review
How about you tell Daym Drop to watch this episode for an honest review?
Yes that drop guy can’t pronounce the name and claims the meat is steamed when it’s broiled but whatever
@@matthewtoddsr.6743 he’s probably thinking about Ted’s Restaurant in Meriden CT - they’re famous for their steamed cheeseburgers, but have only been around since the 50s. We also review Ted’s in another episode
Cash only? Who carries cash today? I hope they have an ATM inside.🤔
Jim Fromearth they do.
Smart people
Bih, I use bitcoinz
Can you barter?
Kenny Darkes in nyc you have to carry some cash in case you get held up.lol
Raw👎
Medium rare. The proper way to eat a burger.
@@TrippyFoodMore like the proper way to eat a steak, but not a burger, unless you want E. coli
I'm here after Daym Drops review..., it's like night and day.
Don't know what to tell you. I call it like I taste it. I haven't seen his review, but I'm sure there's lots of shouting and dramatic pauses.
that guy really doesnt know what the hell he is talking about, he seems to be more of a dated youtuber/ Fastfood junkie than serious food guy. He thought he was eating a steamed burger, but the Louis is famous for it's 100 year old vertical broiler. Anyone with eyes could tell thats not a steamed burger , worst part is he is from CT he should know better.
@@bev_buntu4674 how does anyone make the mistake of thinking Louis’ Lunch steams their burgers when they put them in the vertical gas grills right in front of you? Perhaps he’s confusing it with Ted’s in Meriden where they do steam their burgers…
@@TrippyFood yeah it's bad out of the gate. He screws up the name of the place, then for some odd reason misses all the visual cues of the 100 year old broiler, the actual finished burger, etc. Lastly if anyone has ever had a steamed hamburg , it's night and day in taste, texture, etc. If he was someone passing thru making a vid I could forgive the silly review, but he's from Conn, and I think does this as his profession. I was in Central CT last week, the roadstand I wanted to go to was closed so stopped off at Ted's grabbed a few burgers and ended up going down the youtube hamburger review rabbit hole and found your channel, good stuff👍 I plan on hitting Louis in the fall, it's been awhile.
