  • In this video Fish Veterinarian Dr Loh investigates a Lake Malawi cichlid tank to find out what is causing newly introduced fish to die within 12 hours of introduction.
It's important to realise that just because your resident fish are doing OK, if you do not monitor your water conditions closely, it could over time shift to a point outside of the normal comfort zone for most fish, and beyond the normal tolerance levels of what newly introduced fish can handle. So it's critical that before adding new fish, you careful check all water parameters including the temperature to ensure your newly introduced fish are entering a hospitable environment.
Dr Loh also shares with you a simple way on how to check if your thermometer is working accurately.

As soon as I saw the thermometer in the video.. Yep. I had the same one. It broke after only about a month. It slowly over time kept reading lower and lower. Luckily, my Fluval heater has it's own temp display so I knew one was off.

  • @AaronSmith1
    @AaronSmith1 4 года назад +18

Geez...even when I had a 25gal tank I always kept two temp sensors in the tank (one passive, one active) just to make sure if one was reading off I'd know right away. Not doing that for a tank this size is like buying a Ferrari but skipping the insurance.

Eheim heaters are also not reliable at the set temperature. Even after much calibration, it wouldn't run at the set temperature. For my 680L tank, I set the heater at 28c but the actual temperature ( measured with two separate thermometers) was at 30c. So it's best to have two thermometer to counter check each other and the heater.

I use an Inkbird temperature controller (About £25 on Amazon) on all my tanks for that reason. Then just set the heaters a couple of degrees higher, but still within a safe range for double protection. They have a high or low temp alarm as well so you'll get a warning if your heater fails.

Hi Doctor Loh, I was wondering if you would be interested in making a video about fish obesity? I was watching one of your past videos where you dissected a goldfish and showed the fat deposits. I think overfeeding is very common in pet fish and was curious about the direct effects it could have on fish health (not in terms of water quality) and if overweight fish can have heart problems and decreased fitness like we do. I know goldfish and koi will eat forever and can get huge but do they get obese? And does excess fat increase their morbidity? Kinda weird question but it's stuck with me.

I had an Angel Fish start to swim nose up..it got to the point it was nearly vertical. After one vid of yours I tried deflating the swim bladder...didn't hurt the fish...but did not cure it. I did notice doctor that this male Angel only ate only one food- flakes. Ignored all others. As last resort I bought dried krill at the local Asian market. After soaking them soft..I put them in. Both he and the mate seemed to slowly get used to the taste..then took them in regularly. That male seems to have 90% recovered. Malnutrition might have been the cause. I feed a wide variety to various fish in a 240 gallon aquarium..but no live foods. Only that male Angel would only eat one food exclusively. " Angelfish nose up" might be caused by several problems, malnutrition just one?
Malnutrition might make for a video?

Hi Dr Loh, I have a new pond setup without a proper nitrogen cycle established and I have to put 20 of my Koi fish. I have 1 pressurized pond filter pump and 1 canister filter running and yet I still have Ammonia and Nitrite record at 0.25ppm with pH8.5. My pond is running for 3 weeks now and I have reduce feeding to once every 2 days and perform water change daily at 20%. I have also added beneficial bacteria on every water change as well stress coats for Koi fish. Is there anyway to increase the nitrogen cycle for bacteria to take care of these Ammonia and Nitrite? Many Thanks

There IS some controversy over whether or not you ACTUALLY need a heater, but you certainly do if you live in in cold climates. I personally, don't trust heaters even one that is proved working if i don't actually need or it or the benefit isn't significant enough for me. I live in a very hot area, and room temp is fine. You are of course setting something up that is electronic with heat inside you tank, this can be an obvious nightmare, for one it relies on electricity so fluctuations could be deadly if it somehow malfunctioned or didn't work as intended/ fried/overheat your fish. Fish def prefer certain temps though.. it's more ideal but again it's a trade off, as you are relying on this device to not function as if it ever did could be catastrophic. Another time I'd certainly use a heater is if fish is sick, to help boost it's immune system while also helping any digestion problems that may be present. While filters, box filters, and alike rely on electricity, if they ever failed they would not harm your fish provided that the power doesn't stay off for a prolonged period. It's for this reason, I am cautious and hesitant with heaters. If you do get one, make sure it is reliable, accurate, and have more than one way of measuring the temperature, at least a stick on thermometer, and ideally have a way of alerting you if things go wrong, cause it definitely is possibility. proactive approach is the best way.

Key bases for not killing your fish:
    1) correct liters + companionship (or none) depending on the FULL GROWN fish and it's needs
    2) water conditioner + filter + heater/cooler (if necessary)
    3) CYCLING the tank
    4) nitrates, nitrates and ammonia: keep them in check!! Nitrites should ALWAYS be at 0 AFTER the tank cycles
    5) the water surface needs to be moved by the pump to oxygenate the tank
    6) QUARANTINE EVERY ADDITION!
If you have any questions, fellow viewers, just ask :)

you need a step filter bed. pump the water from the creek into progressively finer filters, pouring down from one to the next.
at the end, before it goes into your tank, you can have it pass through a diatom filter or a heavy UV irradiated box if you really want to make sure nothing gets through.
of course, this is hardly "all natural", but it's the only way to avoid microbial contamination, if that is something you are concerned about. You would still have the advantage of a well balanced mineral content in the creek water supply. probably. make sure you also source the creek water so you know what it passes through before it gets to where you want to pump the water from. just because it's natural, doesn't mean it's really good for fish.
That said, I have had many flow through aquarium systems both fresh and salt water, and have never had a problem with parasites. just basic rough filtration (water is pumped through standard filter materials like "aquarium wool" to make sure any debris is removed while it is heated/cooled to the proper temp before entering the aquarium proper.

I have a question for anyone who’s had this experience. In the past, whenever I added new fish to an established tank, my fish die. Not the new fish, but my older ones. It’s been years since I tried, but it always happened despite my being careful where I bought the new fish. My fish will usually die within 3-7 days. Here’s the big issue. I currently have a Cosmo goldfish. I’ve had him for almost 10 years now. I would love to add 1-2 goldfish to his 20 gallon tank, but am so scared to lose him, yet it makes me sad to have him spend his life alone. Especially since he can live for many more years. He’s been alone now for about 5 years. Has anyone experienced this or have any advice I can try. Thank you in advance. I asked my local pet store and they said they never heard of this happening.

I've noticed that too. New fish..somehow seem never these days to be 100% healthy..and its only days later years old fish come down with something. Didn't used to be like that. Modern times. Keep some kind of all purpose medications on hand. Like Kordon Ich gone...with formaldehyde and methylene blue seems to help a great deal. Wont harm plants also is a big plus.

@Cunning Stunts I only have one aquarium set up. I'm usually good at spotting an unhealthy dealer tank. But,when you do go weeks or months with no new fish? All it takes is for one new fish to sneeze...ugh.

What I do to maintain a stable ph in my guppy tank I added a big snail shell it doesn't let the ph drop even if I add soft/acidic water it keeps it stable. I'm not an expert and only have a few month of experience keeping fish but I do a lot of research and it helped me my guppies looked off and didn't know what was wrong then I tested the water and kh, gh and ph were low. You have to add buffer to the water or something like cuttlebone crushed coral in my case I added a big snail shell and it made such a big difference it only took a few days for my guppies to recover they were more active and looked much healthier.
