    Hello Dr. Loh and others, today I’ve been searching the internet for any information on a certain physical feature that I’ve seen on a couple of koi. A little background information first: My town has a local park and in this park there is a spring that’s about 40-45 yards x 25-30 yards, with a waterfall outlet at one end of the spring. The spring/Park is also home to approximately 25-30 ducks.
    I visit the park on a regular basis, especially after I bought a camcorder. During my time at the park, I’ve noticed two different fish (one a grass carp and the other some type of koi) that have sizable bulges on one side of their body, right in the middle. There are approximately 50 koi/carp in the spring. I’m pretty sure that the same grass carp has had a bulge for over a year. I noticed the koi with the bulge just a couple of days ago.
    I wish I could say with certainty that a veterinarian makes regular visits to the spring, but I can’t. As far as I can tell, the koi seem to be healthy and happy. I certainly enjoy sitting by the water and observing these creatures. Any information about the big bulges, not lumps or bumps, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Fish Doctor. I have lost a number of fish over the last week. Sleeping fish sickness is what I am seeing the symptoms called. I have done large water changes daily, with Salting the pond. Salt dosage has been one table spoon to about ten gallons of water. I have been adding a wide spectrum Microbe lift as well. I took a sick fish to my local Koi expert. A sample was taken and put under a microscope. They did not find any parasites with 3 samples. I would greatly appreciate some helpful advise.

    Dear Dr Log. I have ten goldfish in a 100 litre tank. Nine of them are thriving but there's one little one who hasn't grown since I bought hir. The tank has had several water changes, has an abundance of plants and good filtration and airation. There are no signs of disease or parasites on this or any other of the fish. I'm considering checking hir mouth for one of those little shrimp looking things as one of them killed a fish of mine 35 odd years ago when I didn't know such a thing existed.
    Other than that I guess it's parasite treatment, a salt bath and physical inspection with very fine needle nose tweezers.
    It's quite odd. All the others are doing really well except for this little one.

    • @iAteTheRamen
      @iAteTheRamen 7 лет назад +2

      100 liters is WAY too small for 10 goldfish. You're overstocked!

    • @JaneRakali

      @iAteTheRamen 7 лет назад

      Sorry to hear about the 10th! If you intend for them to grow to their fullest potential, the general rule of thumb is about 40 liters per goldfish. I suggest checking out multiple sources online to find out more!

    Okay I need some help here. I've had a koi and a goldfish co habitating for sometime now and out of the blue the koi has started flashing and scraping itself against things in the tank (been trying to handle this situation for about a week almost two now). I've quarantined the koi away from the gold fish in a separate tank in order to properly treat him. I've attempted to salt bathe my fish and use fish amoxicillin to treat any potential bacterial infections he may have since he scratched off a scale or two now. I mean I am not sure what kind of parasites/diseases he has at this point because he doesn't present any of the prominent symptoms to any one specific illness. Under his neck on one side it is a little swollen and he may have a very slight opaque coloration to his slime coat in one or two small areas. I've dealt with fish my whole life and I clean my tanks on a regular basis, keeping an eye on the ph and build up of fecal matter. I know it is not ick, swim bladder, anchor worm, dropsy, mouth rot, fin rot, or fish lice. Please help me out here, everything I've done up to this point has kept him alive so far but he doesn't seem to be improving.

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  6 лет назад +1

      Dino Rawr you'll need to get proper diagnostics to know how to handle this situation, and before it gets worse. This is because many clinical signs of illness presented by fish are not specific to any particular disease. I'd also refrain from unnecessary use of antimicrobial drugs. There is a global concerted effort in preventing antimicrobial resistance.

    Hi Doc, My fish are behaving really strangely. I keep finding them in the morning in the skimmer basket. I first thought they were hiding for safety, but now I think they are going in there and cannot find their way out. The bigger one goes and sits on the bottom of the pond when I get him out. I worry he won't make it if he keeps getting "stuck" in the basket. This is new behavior for the group of them. What do you think? Thanks.

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  5 лет назад +1

      Check they're not hiding from predators. May be safer to replace basket with something they can't get stuck in. Or perhaps they're too weak from some kind of illness, that they get drawn into the basket by the water current. If it's the latter, best get them vet-checked.

    Hi! A few weeks ago weve introduced 2 kois to our fairly new pond. There were already some goldfish and a few gold ides in there, but in a 8000litres pond we thought we could definitly introduce some more fish.
    Theyve been doing great so far, eating and growing a lot, although still a little shy.
    However today inoticed both of them flashing, ive only caught each of them doing it once, and the water levels seem fine. Should I be concerned? The other fish are also doing good, and itd be a pain to get those little fish out of there to examen them, what should I do?

    • @MarkyPlaysPH
      @MarkyPlaysPH 5 лет назад

      llama lady you should definately look further into that... They could have a parasite... Ask your local pet store for some pond medication and you can consult a fish vet like this guy... Also.. Do you add rock salt to your pond every now and then? It helps to some extent..
      I already lost 20 kois... T_T also.. You may want to redo your filter...

    • @llamalady
      @llamalady 5 лет назад

      Mark Aparri thanks for the response! Theyre still alive, And ive only caught them doing it a few times since, im afraid to throw of the biosystem with medication... especially since its an outdoor pond with plants in it (for both oxygen and filtration)
      Also our filter is fine, it filters 8000l/hour, and all the values are great, pond is clear, no amonia buildup, no algae buildup, all other fish are fine as well...
      Asking a local specialist might be my best bet :) thanks!

      llama lady you mentioned that you have an outside pond? Ahm... I've been consulting with a lot of koi breeders that the pond should not be rained on... As they said rain could contiain harmful bacteria.. Glad to know your kois are doing fine... Btw... Since im from the ph, we usually have DIYs as an alternative. For instance... Instead of carbon.. We put charcoal inside a net bag in our filter. We washed it first though until it does not darken the water. Also a friend of mine helped me setup the filter and even put oyster shells. Just thought you might need some diy tips.. Happy fish keeping

      @@MarkyPlaysPH strange that it wouldnt be allowed to be rained on, where kois are bred (in japan) they live in mudpools that are definitely outside. Also I know many places where they are outside, including where we bought them (they are specialized in kois, travel to japan yearly to go buy them), so that seems strange.
      Thanks for recomending your diy channel :)
      Update on the koi: theyve completely stopped flashing, theyve about doubled in size, have great vibrant colours, eat well and are nice and active :) theyre also getting really used to humans and come eat out of my hand :)

      You need biological filtration (lava rock, porous ceramic tubes, bio home media) this enables (good) bacteria to form and keep a clear tank, although not fully essential as ive not always used bio media only sponge filter once and had crystal water, but its normal for new or recently cleaned out tanks to become cloudy for a short while, no matter how many water changes, mine has basically taken two weeks to become fully clear thats with two water changes, don’t over feed as this can result in cloudy water, also any rocks,stones,gravel will need to be thoroughly cleaned before putting in tank, use tank water in a bucket to clean anything out of the tank as straight tap water kills the healthy bacteria, only take around half water out max each water change hope some of this is helpful 👍

    Hello, I have a 500 gallon pond with many goldfish and 2 Koi. The goldfish have started dying (so far 25), they look like they can't breathe, they stop eating and eventually swim irregularly, like they pass out and come to. We have treated the pond, isolated the sick fish and treating them only to have them die. The gills look swollen and red, but i dont know if that is normal. We have changed the water, and included salt and beneficial bacteria. Any ideas before we lose all of our fish?

    How much formalin do you use my pond is 1500 gallons

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  Год назад +1

      There are several factors to consider when using formalin such as the fish species, severity of illness, the dissolved oxygen level, water temperature, the presence of organics, salt concentration and the parasites you're treating against. For a 5678L pond, the dose rate would range between 70-140ml. Remember this has to be pre-diluted and them distributed evenly over the entire pond. For more detailed information, we have provided in our newly developed and launched Fish Vet Masterclass available at fishvetmasterclass.mykajabi.com

    Hello, doc! Good evening. I am owning 3 kois in my reftub. 1 blue skin, 1 kohako, and 1 doitsu. My doitsu has reds on his "skin" (coz he has no scales), and it's making an opening wound on it. I'm suspecting it as a parasite. I tried removing it but I couldn't coz doitsu's skin is so slippery and he keeps on moving whenever i try to remove it. He swims fine. He eats fine, too. But these red spots on his skin bothers me. I'm afraid it would infect my other 2 kois coz i'm trying to treat it for 2weeks already and still no improvement at all. What should I do? I badly need your help to cure my koi, Doc. I hope you notice this. Thank you!

    Hi We have koi and gold fish and have been treating them with salt and Flavine. It’s two weeks now and their still flashing and some scales have fallen due to scratching them selves . The place that did a scrape said they have Costia . What should we do now.l?

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  3 года назад +1

      Costia tends to attack the most debilitated fish, and so difficult to treat. A salt bath of affected individuals, followed by prolonged immersion of formalin of the entire system may work.
