    as someone who's spent a lot of money and effort on treating the 'it's internal parasites' wasting disease signs, I would love to see a follow up video to this in a few months to show the treatment/changes had a long term positive effect. This is a real game-changer for me having tried to keep Victorians like Pundamillia with my Malawi fish before and had them suffer the wasting effect.

    I’m surprised the owner didn’t know those species needed very different water parameters . It’s normal for beginnners to make this mistake ( to mix species that require different water parameters in the same tank ) , but someone with a tank like that can’t be a beginner .

    Just as an aside; the larger fish shoppes in the San Jose and San Francisco Bay area, the different African lakes fishes have separate tanks. Of course, this shop may not have room for separate large aquariums for separate lake species. Which is too bad, since the fish live and thrive and grow so much better. Happy fish!

    Excellent work doc. But do we know for sure this is the reason? You would still need to come back after say a few months to see if these fish have put on weight. I have seen African Cichlids skinny like this numerous times and there is very little magnesium or calcium in the water.

    During my tenure as Technical Editor of the British Cichlid Association I remember dealing with many requests for help from people keeping cichlids from the 3 African great lakes together. Similar problems to the one presented here, but not always. One of the key pieces of advice I constantly gave was not to mix the species from the 3 lakes. They all have different water chemistry and the fishes have evolved to cope with the composition of their respective lakes. Wild caught fishes are sensitive to change and prone to stress when placed in conditions that are alien to their physiology.
    Another observation is that a few of the fishes had stringy faeces. This is not a normal occurrence and is indicative of either diet deficiency or intestinal parasites. Commonly found in mbuna, where too much animal protein was being fed in the diet triggered a disturbance in the gut flora. Feeding the community with medicated diet is useful but there is no way that every affected fish will ingest the amount of food required to deliver the correct therapeutic dose.
    Ideally, the 3 lake communities should be kept separately in tanks where the water parameters approximate to their native ion content, and to go even further, the different feeding guilds should be kept on their own too. Tropheus and mbuna (like Metriaclima) are vegetarians and should be fed accordingly; most Aulonocaras are insectivores, some are molluscivores, and need protein in their diet. Feeding the tank with a 'general' diet augmented by some variations does not meet the specific requirements of every species present in the tank. There are other issues going on in this tank besides the water chemistry.

      Very sound advice. Thank you for sharing. A good and correct diet is so important to fish health. This is especially so when feeding only the one kind or type of fish food. Aquatic communities mix need to consider water quality and diet, and whether they get along.

    Paul sounds as if he knows it all, yet perhaps he does not. Could Paul be willing to put the Victoria Lake fishes in a separate tank? Hopefully ;hat would not cause too much a a problem to do. Especially is he wants what is best for the fishes, which he seems to want to do. And have much happier fishes and less stressed out . Good luck!

    Interesting but makes sense..they were fed a variety of foods...but they can never get away from the wrong water. Haplochromis for me have been as bad as Discus. Bloat would get them after they grew fast for many months. So,I stopped long ago with them.
    How about Iron gluconate? It does a fantastic job for plants..but what's the medical on fish? I know iron is good for blood cells..makes people who are anemic...better if not peppy.
    I know anything in a very high dose is lethal..but what about doses used in planted aquariums?

    Was the problem solved, though, after having corrected the calcium/magnesium levels? Because, while the water chemistry could certainly have been the problem, mycobacteriosis has not been ruled out in this video.

    Again, I respectfully disagree. In this tank the issue appears to be stress, which is caused from aggression, which is triggering the illness. This is not a case of water conditions being outside the norm. As stated by the owner at the beginning of the video: "It tends to happen more when they get older & dominant & they start to fight a bit". If you watch from 2:58-3:20, the owner repeats that mantra, and points out an adult cobalt zebra, a Malawi cichlid, that clearly is also suffering from the exact same symptoms as the Victorians. I saw other Malawi fish in that tank as well, suffering from the same thing. Simply removing the fish being picked on, and placing them in a new environment, is most likely what created the clinical response that you witnessed. I post this in the hope to help, and I hope that it is accepted as same. Thanks

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  4 года назад +1

      I requested the owner of the tank to comment, and here's what he had to say -
      "Hi Richmond, Please feel free to publish my reply on my behalf. As you have heard by my explanation on the videos, I too was attributing the issue to stress as this is the common cause. This is not a new tank & has been running for 28 years now & is generally very successful. Previous investigations & treatment over the last couple of years have been exactly those used for treating all the usual suspects - levamisole, clout, metro, epsom salts, praziquantal octozin, tetra parasite guard etc., these have all been used in the past with very little positive effect. Microscopic examination of gut, skin & waste have all been performed with no signs of the usual pathogens. The difference with the current diagnosis has been results - since reducing the levels as recommended by Richmond the fish have responded. Hollow bellys were reduced & the single, most notable change was that we started to notice all the fish were producing healthy, dark waste & far more was obvious on the substrate. This positive result certainly confirmed the approach in my eyes."

      If you couple the high energy needs of breeding age fish with the high magnesium levels which is a laxitive that will cause digestive problems in fish species that aren't evolved to handle high magnesium levels the fish will be bound to loose weight. The chart Dr Loh shared indicated the Victorian cichlids are not from waters with high mag levels, so their digestive systems won't work right in those hi mag conditions, and they seemed the worst effected. If the tangs were also getting effected then I could see room for another theory but as it stands the diagnosis given in the video makes perfect logical sense.

    • @KamfaKing
      @KamfaKing 4 года назад +1

      This would seem logical, if the fish in question were say Altum angels. Having successfully kept all of the various Rift Lake species, for decades, in tap water that is high in calcium, and magnesium, and know many others with far higher levels in their tap, I'm quite certain that Paul's mineral levels weren't causing the skinny disease symptoms we saw in that vid. Excessive calcium & magnesium causing gastrointestinal issues in mbuna? Are you serious? lol Like I said previously, good luck to you & your fish, Paul. But if/when this begins surfacing again, I would look at Cryptobia. Not nearly as common in cichlids, nor as easy to diagnose, or treat successfully, which is probably why it has been missed over the years. Good luck.

    Hey
    what do you think about that Tropheus that is diet is not carnivor with fish from Malawi and Tanganyika that they are.
    second, Magnesium in lake Tanganyika is important to the cichlid from this lake, what will happen if there is low amount of it ?
    thank you very much

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  3 года назад

      Levels of magnesium excessively higher than what they're adapted to, would produce a diarrhoetic effect, regardless of dietary requirements.
      Tanganyikans are best kept in a separate tank of their own due to their specialised water requirements. We do not have data to explain what would happen to Tanganyikans kept in water with low magnesium.

    I bought 3 male guppies a few months ago. They are all different colour strains.
    One of them (the white guppy) has a thin stomache.
    I treated for internal worms with eSHa - NDX anti parasite treatment. But it hasn't had any effect of the fish. Its still the same. Other than being thin it acts normally. The other 2 guppies I purchased are still healthy looking.
    What should I do next?

      That's a very broad question, difficult to answer. A good filter will be able to convert all ammonia and nitrite, maintaining these at zero or very close to zero levels within less than 4 hours of heavy feeding.

    With all due respect to the Dr., simply feeding a mix of Metronidazole and Levamisole does NOT rule out intestinal parasites. In fact, I am quite certain that elevated levels of calcium and/or magnesium are not the cause of these fish illness, as our local tap water is high in both, and many rare Victorian cichlids have been successfully raised & bred in our water. This is especially true with specimens that are domestic strains, such as all of the fish shown in this video. AU has extremely strict import regulations for live fish and wild caught African cichlids are few and far between. I would suggest that the Doctor consider taking a smear from one of the sick fish and look for Cryptobia iubilans, which is somewhat less common parasite that is very similar to Hexamita aka Spironucleus, but is NOT treatable using metronidazole.

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  4 года назад

      You're quite right that we cannot exclude all endoparasitic causes. The conclusion was made based on the species affected and their clinical response to lower magnesium levels.
