Love this vid! It totally answered a question I had, about using a different set of Ford wheels on the Lightning. The look of the F150 wheels, definitely sets you apart from every other Lightning out there! Diggin that new look!! Really happy that they are more efficient too!!
I came here looking to see positive news on switching wheels bc I want something different for my lightning but was afraid of losing range. Really like the platinum wheels over the others but to each his own. Figured range would improve some based on weight but thought it would be about equal bc of wind drag so was surprised you gained some range here!
Great video! Your results are exactly as expected. Large diameter rims with low profile tires are for "style" at the sacrifice of comfort and efficiency. For EVs, its really amazing that so many OEMs push the large rim/low profile tire look and kind of neglect to tell the customer how much this hurts range. Note that Lariats with 20" rims or XLTs with 18" have EPA 320 mile range on the window sticker Vs EPA 300 mile range for the Platinum with 22" rims (all extended range). You just proved why. I just bought a Pro ER with 18s and I love it!
Great video buddy, I’m near you in Greenback TN. I have the same truck and getting ready to film my personal review. I’m entertaining a Fox 2.0 coilovers with some 34.5s obviously eating some range but I want the look/ride. Thanks for the review!
I have a deposit on a Pro. I must admit I am a fan of the wheels and tires on it. The rest of the truck would not interest most platinum owners though I'm sure. Only problem in Canada is the wait period for a retail one, fleet might be shorter. Looks like it's going to be about a year or so.
The 18" wheel are why I bought the XLT ER I like them better. also cheaper to replace. you can use FORscan to fix the 2mpg diference. I am going to lower my truck a little also.. which will help little with range
Any concerns over the new tire and wheel set up not handling the additional weight of the Lightning and it’s payload? I’m wondering if the new set is dangerously too close to being maxed out if you loaded the truck up completely.
This is awesome content. I would try even lighter wheel and tire packages. It would be interesting to see how a larger diameter tire would affect the range.
My company Expedition has same wheels, i think they are basic XLT wheels. 22 lighting wheels are way more fancy. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder ..,.
I would take 18" over 20 or 22", because then you can hit an unplanned bump like a freeway pothole without worrying about a flat as much. And for going overlanding, can air down a lot better. But I would have got slightly larger tires, not smaller, for a little more ground clearance. Def more range/efficiency loss though. And, the Platinum wheels look like they were designed by dorks to encourage aftermarket wheel sales. The real truck wheels don't look embarrassing!
new wheels look great. i like the platinum wheels the best, of all the lightning choices, but i don't love em. i think the ones you picked look great. remind me of the king ranch wheels, which i really like (not the chrome package ones, the caribou painted pocket ones).
I’m not a big fan of the 22’s on my lightning and the tires are louder than I expected. But, I don’t think 18’s fill the well up enough. I think I may go with versteiners on a lighter set of 20’s.
The new wheels didnt have TPMS sensors in them. They do now but only because I took it to the dealer to have 4 new ones installed in the new wheels. Thanks for watching!
This is one of the main reasons why the extended range Lariat and XLT get 20 more miles of range than the Platinum. The other reason is the added weight from the massaging seats and other features from the Platinum.
@@JamesKlafehn are you planning on road tripping much, or will the vast majority of your recharges be done from home? 288 miles range at 70mph is REALLY good for the Platinum. You may not need to make any other changes.
@@kennyb123 I agree. I made a comment in the video about range not mattering. With the growing charging infrastructure range really doesnt matter. I know that is a hot take people might not agree with but its true. When I had my 2014 Rav4 EV it had 100 mile range. I loved the car but it couldnt get out of NYS because the closest fast charger was in State College PA about 250 miles away. But that is changing. As long as we have 200 mile range and fast chargers the EV market will be good.
The wheels that came on lightning are supposed to be more aerodynamic than regular F150 wheels. Not sure what's up with getting better ran v e with standard wheels. Doesn't make sense.
Very interesting! Variables: You said the second set was a little smaller, potentially better aero. The second was set was A/T whereas the first was (I believe) H/T, probably worse rolling resistance. 20lbs difference per wheel surprised me! Perhaps ford had to make them more hefty due to the added weight of the battery. Wouldn’t wheel weight be more significant during acceleration? I.E. city, stop and go driving. The improved ride you experienced could be due to more tire side wall absorbing bumps. Was the PSI the same for both? Thanks for the video!
I would love to see this too! I "upgraded" my Pro by replacing the 18" wheels (32" tires) with 22" wheels (33" tires), which is basically the opposite of this video. The stock combo was 70 lbs and the 22" combo was 87lbs. I didn't collect much "before" data, but my range and acceleration (0-60) seem to be about 10% less than others are reporting for their stock Pro trucks. Both of mine were HT tires.
Hey James, you video is pretty good, surprised to see so few views. Maybe try a different title, for example include truck name: Can I Extend EV range of my Ford F150 lightning with lighter wheels and tires.
I've always disliked the Platinum rims a lot. Just another thing the Pro has over the Platinum. So, any rims look better. I'm also a fan of more rubber and less giant wheel, so the new ones look great. Worth any range penalty. I predict the Platinum wheels will be more efficient, however.
All the guys that have those larger tires do say that they use more power. about 10%. A better test is on lower speed roads, but that is more difficult to measure since those roads are typically full of obstacles, stops and starts.. but yeah lower speed stuff is better because most of the 70MPH is aerodynamic drag. good wheels help with city driving. i hope you enjoy them.. they do look better. more tire, less wheel.
You certainly can extend the range with lighter wheels. However, the minute you hit a pot hole or railroad track at too high a speed, you are FINISHED! Your tire might survive but your cast wheel will be wiped out. So, make sure you have plenty of the green stuff for the repairs!

I definitely like the look of the new tires compared to the platinum stock tires. I think/guess that you increased mileage.
Good guess! :)

Thanks, totally cool sir. I've been thinking of swapping those hideous 22" wheels too.
I've heard that a lot of wheels aren't rated for the weight of the lightning... Any idea what the load index of those wheels are?

Gotta program new tire sizes that’s why mileage was off. Forscan is a program for home use that can do this programming.

Hey James!!!!! Your RAV4 Prime charger video saved my life I couldn't get that shit out thank you thank you thank you 😍😇
What size of tires are the 18's if you said I miss it. It really looks good and I want to do the same to mine.
I like the new tires and rims better then the stock. Also I think you gained efficiency 😊
I think so too!

@@JamesKlafehndid you ever try Pro wheels?

I'm amazed at the size of wheels/tires put on these EVs. Out VW came with a staggered set up (WTF VW). Give me 18" wheels and tires please.
Useful test. Maybe a closer look of both sets next time? At this glance I'd go with the second set for looks alone.
I am going to do the same to my lightning Question How did you resent TMPS senors or did it fidn them and do it automatically ?
The new wheels dont have TPMS in them.

What about load range being lighter than OEM tires?
Any plans to connect the TRex? :)
Definitely better looking wheels. White letters out though?? Why not put a taller sidewall tire on to keep the overall diameter the same as OEM?

I like the 18's myself. The 22's just never grew on me. Both sets I have are for sale.
Would be interested in what the numbers would be on the oem Ford tremor set up. Down the RUclips rabbit hole I go.
Can the Odometer be calibrated with the new tires?
The replacement wheels definitely look better in my opinion.
Were you at the Bills game today sir?😢. Love to see a video of your thoughts on the disaster.
I wasnt. I dont live in NY anymore so it will be harder to attend games.
Like the new wheels better
The new UI seems to be more accurate with mileage.
Are your original OEM tires for sale?
They are on the wheels. They are included with the wheels.
TPMS sensors work fine? Guess they’re all the same.

You should do a 0-60 comparison. 18s being lighter will definitely be quicker.

add a tonneau cover and see what u can get
The wheel gap is too big with the 18's. Now you need to lower the truck.
Or get bigger tires lol
