Great episode. Im a scientist, but i think the way you actually speak in laymens terms to the masses is more beneficial than using big terms or fancy verbiage. There are alot of doctors and scientists that are trying to teach/share but i know that their egos force them to make sure the viewer's and listeners ( podcast) make sure they think they are smart!! I think what you're doing so far is to take your ego out of the equation and just teach, and you learn , as you state, as well. No one knows everything, and obviously, you're smart, you know a lot, but you can't possibly know everything. Continue speaking to the people who weren't taught so many basics or what we assume are basics, and you'll keep making a huge impact. The amount of unhealthy humans in the world just because they lack some understanding of what they do in their lives with eating/ drinking, movement, stress, etc. And how THEY can make small changes over time and really impact their lives positively. Baby steps, as i always say! Oh, you should encourage people to really become their own advocates with their doctors, etc. we all need to take charge of our health/ life and research our symptoms, ask medical professionals questions, research their answers, get second opinions, etc. I know so many people who just let their doctor dictate their health without any question as to why that drug or that surgery, etc. We all need to stop letting others make our life decisions for us and put ourselves in charge. Thx as always. Hi to Doobie.

We all deserve to know where Dr's get their funding from! Dr's Egos LOL relying on a bunch of outdated undermined facts just to make them money and how about the rest of us? What I found screwy is in 2011 my Scientist friends told me to try to take 2000 units of Vitamin D3 for our immune system and still in Canada they don't want people to know this but it was shared in US. I figure lots of ppl are in a bad mood without this critical nutrient. Just mentioning we should have access and equity to share this back to all.

People should be encouraged to do their own research but it would be unfair to expect an 80 yr old patient barely able to move around (or a 40 yr old as it happens too) to fend for themselves regarding something as innocent as salt intake. A hospitalist is probably acutely aware of electrolyte flow which is probably monitored closely. A sports doctor looking after top sportsmen are probably acutely aware of electrolyte needs of their clients, but why is the regular patient only subjected to high blood pressure secondary to excessive salt intake . One fifth of the general population has experienced ibs issues at some point or another where diarrhea was the main symptom. That produces lots of electrolyte losses and yet how many Drs actually think about advising their patient on proper electrolyte replacement. Is this a shortcoming of the medical education or is it more like an inadequate preparation of the medical practitioners. The fact that Dr Goobie had to 'think' about the issue shows that he was not too familiar with the other side of the coin of too much salt intake. And I would say he's not unique in that respect. With such inadequcies in understanding the human physiology properly and putting it into practice, it will be very challenging for the average Dr to get down to the root causes of diseases. That's unfortunately one of the main issues of modern healthcare system.

I have tried to fix my microbiome with lifestyle medicine - diet, exercise, good sleep , stress reduction, decreased exposure to chemicals and toxins and good social connections, and thankfully, I have not relapsed for an entire year!!!! without steroids or DMTs/Immunosuppressants! it works! As someone battling stage 4 Ovarian Cancer the past 7 years and currently on my 5th line of treatment(more chemo), I feel desperate to heal. A few days ago I asked my primary Dr if he learned anything from his own mother dealing with breast cancer for 2 years and subsequently dying. More specifically, I asked if he would have had her change any way of her diet. I knew how he would answer, but I thought I’d give it a try. He simply said, no. Eat and live life as you enjoy and be grateful for each day you wake. I desired a much more in-depth answer than this and walked off feeling dejected, continuing to flounder alone in this journey, perhaps to the end of my life sooner than I desire. I’m not giving up though. I will add more veggies and fruits and all you mentioned, as I so greatly desire to attempt to heal High Grade Serous Carcinoma and newly dx Adenocarcinoma.

People are afraid of water fasting, they don't understand that all these unhealthy foods that we all eat these days are a major contributor to health problems. By having water fast or intermittent fasting you allow your immune system to take a break from the constant cleaning of unhealthy foods and give it time to focus on other areas of your body that may need healing and attention

i think what we forget about BIOAVAILABILITY of nutrients has to do with absorption, which has to do with MICROBIOME. so by disrupting microbiome (pesticides, food preservatives/additives), of course we're disrupting our own wellbeing.
about 2 weeks back i came across this video discussing raw milk vs pasteurised milk and how they're different. decided to try raw milk for ten days and see for myself coz where i am it's available. i thought "what's the worst that can happen? some bacteria might start growing".. so i add a pinch of turmeric in a glassful (coz turmeric is one of the, if not THE MOST potent antibacterial, and i get its amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits as well this way). and man!!
my body's microbiome has never been healthier. across all classes of food that earlier used to give me discomfort, i haven't been bothered AT ALL about my digestive issues past couple weeks. and not just this, the need to take mineral supplements is vastly reduced.

I love the metaphor you came up with! Interestingly, a couple episodes ago, you mentioned wondering how early Greeks realized that hot water soaks could be helpful for maintaining health. Well, you essentially just hit on it with your own paradigm shift. This concept of balance and flow, as opposed to focusing on numbers to either strive for or avoid, is core to every major herbal medicine system. What you refer to as a build up of sodium, Western herbal medicine (which originated in ancient Greece) calls a buildup of canker, which eventually results in chronic inflammatory disease. Ayurvedic herbal medicine (from India) calls the same stagnation a buildup of ama, and traditional Chinese medicine calls a blockage of qi.
It's very exciting watching you develop clarity with regard to what you want to do in the world!

Consistently following this series! I am 27 year old female but have quickly been overweight within 2 years due to some life changes. My appearance wasn't the main concern about the weight change but all the associated health issues that as a woman get ignored easily due to poorer medical recognition. I've currently been doing a diet program from a chinese traditional medicine doctor which she calls cellular restoration. Overhauled my diet completely with no red meat, fewer carbs, more complex carbs, no processed foods, etc assisted with some kind of detoxing vegetable shake or juice. Have never felt better more than when I take medicine or with my previous lifestyle. I find that many, if not all, of the things she said have been validated by you with science and it makes me more relieved to know what is happening in my body. It is easier to make healthier food choices knowing what it can do to my body. Keep doing what you're doing! You are good at it.

Thank you Dr. Goobie. I'm not a health care professional, but I've been studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for a little over a year, purely out of interest. I've been following the Help Your Body Heal series and everything you said resonates so much with me. What you said about the whole picture was really interesting, because when a good TCM doctor sees a patient, they often would ask about the patient's life first (e.g. type of work, exercise level, how's the poo/pee, emotional wellbeing) prior to giving them diagnosis, treatments and lifestyle suggestions, for the exact reasons you said in this video. We all have different genetics, live at different places, do different jobs, have different lifestyles and relationships with others, they all matter a significant amount to our body and our health.
I also have a personal example of that 😊. After listening to your Ep 1 on carbs, I switched to eating whole grain rice (brown & black) for more nutrients. However, it gave me some acid reflux symptoms after a week, and it just felt rougher on my stomach after each meal. As soon as I switched back to white rice, the problem went away. Now, this is because I've abused my digestive system by eating really unhealthy for many years. I used to have chronic acid reflux but now it's mostly gone away. However, my digestive system is still a bit weak compared to a healthy person's, so I should still take it easy. I'm also positive that it will slowly recover and get back to normal, and by then I should be able to eat more whole grains.
I'm bringing up this example just to show how much variation there still is to the official health guidelines that were given to us. I really think the most important thing is to listen to our body - really pay attention to how we feel after eating certain type of food, doing certain type of work/sport, or meeting certain people. Our body really knows what it needs, but sadly, many of us have lost the connection with it in the modern days.

10 years ago, when I started my health science degree, the first epidemiological case study we looked into was anti-biotic abuse. Sometimes something as simple as not finishing a dosage, or like in many countries around the world, having it easily accessible and people using it for anything and everything, even sometimes a headache.
We also at some point even looked into the gut and mind relationship.
I always try to explain it to people who look at me like Im crazy when I tell them that what they eat might be contributing to their depression/ bad feelings.

@@GoobieAndDoobie I was a vegetarian since about 13 or 14. I am now a mixed vegetarian due to cooking for my family and my own iron needs due to an issue in my 40s, but I prefer being a vegetarian. In my teens in the 1980s, there were so many good books out there about healthy food, ie the Julie Stafford recipe books she made when her husband was ill (Australian woman) or Leslie Kenton raw food books or Diet For a Small Planet, etc re vegetarian food, health and the environment, but medical people would turn their noses up and think you're a hippy nut job if you told them about that perspective in the 1980s or 90s. The Seventh Day Adventists are thought to the one of the healthiest communities and are vegetarian I think. It's good if doctors get away from their training and go down the vegetarian route! I hope your mental health and fitness have improved since leaving your job, the soul/spirit needs to live too! I'd recommend a Greek/Egyptian food intake, a vegetarian one of those cuisines, very healthy and very yummy, the old style of those cuisines, plus Lebanese/Turkish, so yummy, lots of great vegetarian food there. I just came across your channel and listened to your intro video about quitting your job. I felt so bad to see you so sad because that was a heart wrenching decision to make, but to be sad for 20 years really does mean you are doing something wrong. Im 77 years old and retired from my business at 75. I loved my work which is why i retired so late, but when i made that decision i was ready. I locked the office door and that was that. When you said you were happy because you didn't have to do anything each day, but go for a walk. I related to you when you talked about it being so freeing. I agree. It made me realize that we were meant to live a much simpler life, not a stressful one. You really lived a stressful one for a long time. School was very intense and so was your job. Quitting has given you time to think about that. It is very nice to see these newer videosand you look like you might be in your element, still a doctor, just a different type of one. Very cool to see. Be happy.
