Universal Studios full backlot tour (August 1989)

- Although the 'Back to the Future part II' was the highlight, there have been requests for the full tour. Lots of slow periods and white balance is screwed up during one part, so not recommended for general viewing. But you you get to see the iconic Uncle Buck mouse car! Also, the best part, during the Battlestar Galactica battle, the hero yells, "Get that tram out of here!".

im amazed to to see that someone captured the courthouse at 89 during production/post-production. thanks for the video
Wicked musical part of universal studios hollywood movies show years past few months
Thanks for posting this. It was fascinating to see what the studios looked like before I was born.
Glad you enjoyed watching it. Hard to believe it was that long ago.
I know it seems silly, but I LOVE that the sound stages haven't changed colors in the last 30+ years. That cream/taupe/grey aesthetic with the bold "STAGE XX" font really is timeless. Thank you so much for uploading this. The Backlot Tour is probably my FAVORITE theme park ride of all time.
I'd say the only one that has changed is earthquake, now it is all green inside not yellow with gray
@@kimberly11091 do you know my birthday it's 38th birthday years anniversary celebration party years 25th anniversary celebration of life live concert in person picture of the day away magic of universal studios hollywood movies on Netflix with the same place looks like a new album area
What a beautiful home video. Thank you for sharing your memories with us . This video is pure nostalgia gold.
Regular Guy reviews
You are welcome! I’ve been surprised by the interest in the video and comments, like how different crowds looked when no one had a cell phone. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the upload -- I'm old enough to where my parents brought me to Universal Studios as a kid around this same era (late 80's to early 90's), so this certainly brings back memories. I know the tram tour has changed quite a bit, but many of these attractions are still here today.
You are welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed watching it. When I filmed it, I would have never in a million years guessed I’d have so many people watching it.
I worked in the main mailroom on the lower lot at this time.I was just out of highschool. Thanks for sharing this! The Cabin was my favorite place to hang out in because it was real. You really got to learn more about the lot history here compared to today's tour. Really brought me back seeing all those familure roads I used to drive on ( the 480 building!) every day! RIP King Kong ride, The Collapsing Bridge, Jaws Fisherman (with blood), Burning House, Batlestar Galatica and arctic tunnel! :-)
I went about 4 years ago with my kids. It was... fine. Too digital.
We also went to the Warner Tour, which felt _so_ much like this one used to feel.
Some excellent footage on this one! The BTTF 2 set was easily the highlight. The old BSG play bit was super interesting. And seeing the actual Orca still on the lake in the Jaws set was super cool. Good times!
These people did not realize the iconic history they were looking at yet
Hey, I was really impressed! But, yeah, I was in the minority.
Absolutely Epic!!! Back when Universal was Awesome! Loved watching this video. I went 92 so some of these attractions were gone by then. Thank you such for sharing!🙏
Man brings back memories
this was recorded one year before universal studios florida opened
Really good to see the Back to the Future set as filming for part 2 was about to take place.
Wow! that brings back some great memories! I lived in CA USA for 2 1/2 years and got t visit the Studios a couple of times! Wonderful times! Thanks for sharing! 😀
You’re welcome, George. I’m glad I have a forum to share it with folks like you who were there.
This was fantastic! Thank you for sharing this. I took this tour in 1998 but we didn't go through some of the areas you did. Although I'm sure some of it changed as well.
Thanks for sharing, this is a great trip back in time!☺
M A Glad to hear that!
lovely trip back in time. I was in high school during this time and wish I had a camcorder. Thanks for this!!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I remember this version of the tour…was the best!!! Going to Universal was a different experience ….now its just another theme park w rides & a shorter & shorter version of the tour each year.
Thank you for the video. I started frequenting this place late 1994 (when I moved to LA for college -- I was still living in Georgia when this was filmed, and hadn't even moved to NorCal yet), and it's crazy to see it even 5 years earlier.
I _loved_ the old tram tour. Jimmy Fallon on the recent tour is terrible, and I miss the old King Kong so much (though I get why they couldn't rebuild him after her burned in 2008)
Just an insane trip to the "extra" past, and seeing the square while they were setting up for BTTF 2 is just insane (I got to see a lot of work they were doing for Jurassic Park 2 and Batman and Robin, as well as actually seeing the cast of Sliders)
You’re welcome! Glad it gave you a trip back in time. Great reading your experiences with the tour in later years.
She said Tom Cruise was going to be in Dick Tracey, although he never was. She also didn’t mention Al Pacino. I wonder if Cruise was originally cast to play Big Boy instead of Pacino.
I do miss the old tram tour.
Wow now it’s 2020 and everything is chaos
Yes, this is more my vintage
(14:35) The old Federal Express van. Haven’t seen it by that name or design in SO long! 😮
so classic. this is when i used to go so much. i remember when bttf2 was being filmed i tried to go so much because the set was so awesome. most don't even know how what a classic set they are actually looking at. annual passes were like 15 dollars extra after your single day admission. LOL after, we'd try to go watch Love Connection be filmed in Hollywood. haha
I loved that the annual passes used to give you quick access to the tram tour.
I was in college, so me and friends would grab a couple of beers and ride the tram at least once a visit.
I used to help a Friend of mine work on K.I.T.T. and I always dropped by the Battlestar Galactica Attraction whenever I went there as well Good Job of taking me back
Very interesting to see people standing up in the Studio Tour Tram when safety regulations were more laxed.
Memories 😢💔 makes me cry so much that these times are gone.
I love this thanks for the memory lane even tho I wasn’t born🙃
Memories. I used to work at Universal Ampetheater 1989-1992 as security.
Very cool!
thanks for posting. I was a season ticket holder in 89 (and a few years after as well). Great memories
That was a lot of wood panel Dodge Caravans or Plymouth Voyagers!
Nothing more classy than making your vehicle look like it was made of wood.
wow great 1989 they didnt know what was yet to come amazing love this video dig back into archives do you have more videos like this
The original King Kong attraction was so good. RIP.
This was when Back to the Future was just *ONE MOVIE!*
The first I heard there would be a Back to the Future 3 is when I visited Universal Studios Hollywood in August 1989. I knew there would be a Part 2 as the VHS tape for Part 1 said "to be continued..." I saw Part 2 in the theater later that year.
I miss the Smell Of KingKong & ET 😮💨
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
Glad that you enjoyed it!
Ty for this . If u have the mummy returns maze that I was in and can’t find anything anywhere
I only went the once, Carl, but glad you liked the video.
Can't wait for Pontiac to come back... does that happen in 2032, or somewhat before? Either way, excited for sure!
If you notice in this video, there's one area that got overlooked & that was Colonial Street, I mean it did get a mention, but that was it, so to miss all the well known sets along the way, what a drag, but, then again, it has been mentioned in other videos so that makes up for it, too bad the tour now isn't like the tour then because that's all the fun stuff I remember
That’s interesting, James. I never knew we missed out on that.
I believe it could have been because the Burbs was being film then. What month was this. I was there in July of 89.
August 1989
I've been Orlando universal many times but really wanna do L.A. 1 n to c the bk 2 the future 2 set is gr8 n also liked hearing they'd recently wrapped up production of sick Tracey as too the wizard specially coz I was a Nintendo freak
Not bad footage. Still no glimpses of "Backlot Bruce(s)", or the spare animatronic shark for the Jaws part, often seen above ground hidden among other props.
The Phantom of the Opera sound-stage was torn down for the park.
I would give a 'thumbs up' on your comment, but that would indicate I was in favour of tearing down the sound stage. Great trivia!
16:35 I was there in August 25, 1989. The Back to the Future II clock was missing then too. Where was it?
That's really cool! We were there about August 20th, give or take a day, but that's really close to when you were there. I'm sure they had taken the clock to shoot the old west scenes of it for Back to the Future III.
Btw people look so happy without social media and that’s a good thing
Thanks :)
Back when the tour was good. Not a mobile phone in sight. Back then people had people had proper cameras.
@@mayshack because its awesome nowadays that you can't see the tour without having cell phones all over your face or people screaming while taking selfies. So classy. OOF.
P.S. At least its not Disneys level where the tour guide was replaced with a video telling ¨jokes¨ SMH.
@@mayshack 'k boomer, too much text. Boring.
P.s. "we're living in the Best time to ever exist" if you could control your ass, delete all those ad hominem and just use that single quote, You would be totally right.
But instead you sound like an old guy with ego problems.
@@mayshack So many words, again. And a explanation i didn't ask on top of it. TBH you must be very fun in RL, dude.
Shakespeare wrote on Hamlet, in the second act, “brevity is the soul of wit“. Maybe he didn't like to read idiots, too. IDK.
Go back to troll social media comments or whatever you do to fulfil your macho man fantasy. I dont judge.
@@michellefernandez3155 You might be the biggest idiot I’ve seen on the internet today. Outstanding.
@@profile2047 your original response was way more polite.
Indeed, some people are twat magnets, like you two.
Also answering a 6 month old comment just to call idiot some random 23 yo...
Yeah. Nice way of spending your sad excuse of life.
When I went to Hollywood, I didn't go to every single studio! You, know not all studios have theme parks. I went to both, Disneyland, and universal studios. And in Minnesota, I went to nickelodeon universe theme park!
Do you have any footage from this time where City Walk is located? Back when the only thing there was the Movie theaters. Awesome video👍
Thanks very much. I don't have any footage of CityWalk. I don't remember it to be honest. We went on to see the Spruce Goose and Queen Mary and a Second City performance, which I was allowed to film because my cousin was living with one of the players. Very fun trip!
@@65scribe here is a quick glimpse I found 1 week ago. All i could do is picture stories my friends would tell me. I first went to City Walk in 2008. Theatres opened in 1987.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Wow look at the people at the park.. not all foreign people
I love 25th years
So... I assume this was recorded back when Back to the Future Part II hasn’t finished filming yet?
They were probably done filming but maintaining the set for possible reshoots.
I seem to remember they finished filming Part II in early August, but now I can't find the source. According to Wikipedia, filming began February 1989.
is there any video of the actual park itself this was so cool
Thanks Jennifer, but no we didn't go in the park that I remember. I don't know if there was even much to it at that time.
Please put it out on the floor of the tram 😂☠️🚬

Are there clips on the tv show Coach? If so what are the timestamps.
Esmeralda Hernandez
No, I don’t recall Coach clips, but they did reference the show being taped there.

WTF Happened at 40:21?!
Good question :) Someone dropped something out of the tram and the guide had to run and pick it up. We figure it was film for his/her camera.
@@65scribe Oh ok! Thank you!
here's another true story about someone dropping an item from the tram. a tourist from vietnam accidentally dropped his camera into the red sea while the tram was crossing it. he got up from his seat, dove into the red sea and retrieved his camera. security interviewed him and asked why he would do such a thing. the man stated he knew his camera was most likely ruined, but the memory card with all his pictures of his vacation in america were on the card.
on a side note: the red sea is no longer there. it's been cemented over, and that lake in this video is only about half the size now.
