Yes and no. He was versatile but he got beat over the top a ton. Loved him, but teams that could knew where he was so they could go after him in the pass game. Amazing tackler, great player.
Still there's no better safety duo then Roy Williams and Darren Woodson..... those were two bone breaking, concussion making hard hitting safeties!! Loved watching those two on the field !!!
Yeah, I had forgotten how devastating those two were when both were on the field. Those were consistently bone-jarring hits. Let's also not forget another favorite Madden player in the Cowboys backfield and special teams.....Bill Bates. Little guy........but a f$#%ing animal.
An argument can be made for 'The Soul Patrol'....George "The Hitman" Atkinson and Jack "The Assassin" Tatum at Safety positions for the Raiders in the '70s
Hines ward is my favorite receiver of all time. He gets speared after dropping the ball right in the back, looks behind him, probably smiles and pats roy on the helmet. They don't make em like they used to. I have a Hines ward card and he's catching the ball while diving completely horizontal. Full arm extension and he is historically laughing as he caught it. Him and Larry Fitz were different like that. Roy Williams was an intimidator. He'd pull off a handful of picks each season too.
That hit would've laid 99% of wide receivers out cold. Helmet to helmet, back of the head... Hines Ward looks back and does as you say. What an absolute legend. Respect from a Cowboys fan.
This the man the NFL changed and had to put rules in place for. His style of play was his own and once they made the league into a powder puff league Williams play on the field was less and less impactful. Williams in my eyes is and was the first player to suffer from not being able to play his style of football because of the rules. He never was the same player after and when he was a Bengal it showed.
Saw him hit Jerry Rice along the sideline in Seattle. Thought it broke Jerry in half. Jerry got up like it wasn’t a big deal. One of the loudest hits ever.
stumbled on to this video..... and, thank goodness for the new rules. Everyone of his 'hits' are helmut to helmut. I have watched the NFL for years and never realized what was going on. Maybe 15 years from now, our numbers will be down on CTE. A 2023 report found CTE in 345 out of 373 NFL deceased players. Roy was great and played under the rules of the day.... it's safer now.
I've never seen a collection of hits this hard from one player before. Some look like a torpedo being fired at a dinghy. You'll never seen a grown-ass man running full speed being instantly reversed in direction like in these hits. Regarding coverage, I do remember Williams being burned on deep balls quite a few times. The intimidation of knowing he was back there though had to be huge. I know that Madden loved him.
Yeah today NFL sucks they cry about the concussions not to sound none symphonic but I don’t care cause they get money and choose to play the game it’s a risk so bring back the mans game. I had to play it when I was a kid hard ass tackles and live with the consequences
I got three concussion and a back injury just from watching the slow motion videos that they couldn't show at regular speed because they would have to find and reinstate him just to kick him out of the NFL !!!!!
No we tried him in that role in 2007 and 08 and he failed miserably. I thought it would be a match made in heaven just like Keanu Neal but both bombed pretty bad. Takeaway... Sometimes oversized slower physical safties suck as undersized LB's. Sameway some slower CB's can't make the transition to safety.
If I had to play against this dude I’m sitting out that week. No way. Just no. I mean he’s not letting nothing go. He’s throwing his entire body into everything he gets a chance to.
I never saw anyone absorb a hit from Roy and fall forward, he always stopped them where the contact occurred and often separated the player from the ball. Played back in the day when hard hits were allowed, he'd be too violent for today's powder puff rules.
Almost every one of those hits would draw a flag today. I understand the league cracking down on excessive hits, but at the end of the day football is a violent sport.
He was just awesome to watch play the game his hard hitting style was unmatched and the powder puffs in the league's front office got scared and changed the rules so we can't see these type of hits anymore which sucks. They left out one of his best hits in college football called the superman play against Texas.
I wish there was a highlight reel of receivers dropping passes when Roy Williams was just in the vicinity. Did he get beat over the top? Sure, but not a lot of yards were given up by the Dallas Cowboys' defense over the middle during Williams' years on the roster. So many times receivers flinched from hits that never even came...
Roy was a walking highlight reel for big hits. It's like he had the fkn cheat for jacking people up. Unarguably one of the most vicious hitters of all time. #31 DC4L
I always admired Roy growing up, but damn, brodie was always leading with the crown of his head. That's mad dangerous. And many of these were on defenseless players
I honestly thought he was going to be one of the best defensive players in NFL history but when he lost a step and started getting beat on the long ball he was done! But #31 was the hammer and the nails though! Great music to this video!
@@RockwellJunya true.. but early on, especially when Woodson was still there, he actually had some nice interceptions.. but for the most part, coverage wasn’t good
RW made watching defense more exciting than watching the offense. Thise receivers got alligator arms when he was on the field because they knew there was a big price to pay.
You could tell the impact he had just being on the field with how many of the receivers dropped passes right in their hands they were afraid to get hit by him
I just don’t understand why as the game evolved, why they didn’t explore Roy as a linebacker? He had the body and the strength to make that type of transition.
Im a Cowboy fan & Roy was just one of a Handful of Hard Hitters. You had Dick "Night train" Lane, Steve Atwater, John Lynch, Ronnie Lott, Sean Taylor, Kam Chancellor, Brian Dawkins, & Rodney Harrison, but the Hardest Hitter of them all & His nickname is Mr. Death or Dr. Death or The Assassin aka JACK TATUM. All of The above are good but then You have Jack Tatum who was in a class by Himself.
EVERY ONE OF ROY'S HITS IS "HELMET TO HELMET"...THE CROWN OF THE HELMET AT THAT 👌🏿. HITTING FACE UP IS ONE THING (THAT'S ALL I DID) LEADING WITH THE TOP OF YOUR "HAT" IS SOME OTHER SHIT.
ahhh i remember roy williams. he is the reason why the nfl is so soft now. because of him the league has so many rules towards hitting and protecting players
@@adamgonzales5649 It may be a little unfair to call Williams one of the most disappointing Cowboys ever, but in terms of expectations and production, he completely fell off the map. He was boxed because of his inability to effectively cover the pass,-or more specifically, the deep ball-
I'm so f**ked up by the "new" NFL.. that while watching this in full; I was expecting to see a flag on every hit!!! I love some Roy Williams, now-a-days he wouldn't have any amount of paycheck left after the fines
Roy was one of the last of the great hitters, Other teams had to know where he was at at all times.
Yes and no. He was versatile but he got beat over the top a ton. Loved him, but teams that could knew where he was so they could go after him in the pass game. Amazing tackler, great player.
BEST SAFETY EVER IN HISTORY😤
Still there's no better safety duo then Roy Williams and Darren Woodson..... those were two bone breaking, concussion making hard hitting safeties!! Loved watching those two on the field !!!
Number 1 defense when they were both there
It's hard to believe I grew up watching that safety duo and we haven't even had a good safety since.
Yeah, I had forgotten how devastating those two were when both were on the field. Those were consistently bone-jarring hits. Let's also not forget another favorite Madden player in the Cowboys backfield and special teams.....Bill Bates. Little guy........but a f$#%ing animal.

Didn't they have Terence Newman at corner also...?? He was lock tight on receivers..!
Different breed back then.
A thing of beauty.
My favorite player. Madden said if you want to know how to tackle, watch Roy
Or ask T.O
That was just about the time football ended. Wish they still played like that
The game changed single handedly because of this man. Nobody.. and I mean nobody hit harder.

He and Sean Taylor RIP. Changed the game into what it is today.
I'm a niner fan but loved watching this monster. Very underrated imo. This a long video with alot of clean hits
So aggressive in every tackle he made, and it was infectious...made his teammates feel the urge come on with it just the same intensity as #31 and #28
Watching him lay out Shegals players was my favorite.
Die Shegals Die

To be fair the horse collar tackle is dangerous lol
He was in the NFL just a few years too early.
Yep, horse collar became illegal because of him. He hurt TO and McNabb in the same game with horse collars.
I honestly think he's one of the best box safety/linebackers in the league if he plays today. The NFL learned he can't cover after Woodson got hurt.
@@td31g if your a wuss. Football is dangerous that’s why your parents had to sign a release. Quit being a wuss
The best to do it
He is One very underated player's.
Modeled my hs game after him. Cost me a broken jaw, hand, And I don’t remember a year of geometry but it sure was fun
Roy was one of the hardest hitting safeties we ever had but in the league now he would get so many flags
Football has gotten so soft ,now. Before too long defense won't be able to tackle anymore
Miss that kind of smash mouth football !🤬
Nightmare walking 🚶♂️ 😳

It hurt my soul to see him in a bengals jersey!
Roy was so badass he even knocked dudes out at the Pro Bowl... They prolly hated him... 🤣🤣🤣

The Hitman...

I miss this dude
Dude clearly should've been at LB and it would've prolonged his talents and career
He was like the size of a linebacker too. You could tell guys were afraid of him there were so many dropped passes in this video
He would of been ejected from about 90% of these games today

THE HIT AGAINST EMMITT CLASSIC 😆 MADE HIM RETIRE 🤠
If he was playing with Dallas today and playing the role that kearse is playing he would be a perennial pro bowler
Yeah but he would get flagged like crazy, with the rules today.
Facts. He’d be a phenomenal big nickel linebacker and sam linebacker
No we tried him in that role in 2007 and 08 and he failed miserably. I thought it would be a match made in heaven just like Keanu Neal but both bombed pretty bad.

Background music should be a little known, obscure R&B song from the early 1980's, "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward.
Best a cowboy of all time at least one of the best

They don't want players to end up with CTE. Almost every hit in the highlight is him going helmet to helmet, that's no good for the brain.
Ricky Williams was the only one I saw falling forward after meeting roy.
Almost every one of those hits would draw a flag today. I understand the league cracking down on excessive hits, but at the end of the day football is a violent sport.
Roy was fined so many times that he had to change his tackling style, and that ended his career.
The Roy Williams tackle AKA The Horse collar
there was also the michael irving rule, and the erik williams rule.
If Roy dont have CTE, its a myth. What a legend.
CTE is a myth. It's just an excuse for bad behavior.
Exactly

The king of helmet to helmet contact. About 3 quaters of these hits are illegal now. Lot of guys dealing with CTE because of RW.

a work of art if played at quarter speed

He was elite as a SS but once he got moved to FS he was mediocre, didn’t quite have the coverage skills needed to be a great FS
Yep.. he’ll of a hitter.. but when he started slowing down & had to cover, that was it
He was really like a Linebacker playing Safety. He had no Coverage skills.
@@RockwellJunya true.. but early on, especially when Woodson was still there, he actually had some nice interceptions.. but for the most part, coverage wasn’t good

TRRW as we knew him in Norman
The Real Roy Williams, aka Superman!
When he be hitting them it's like a car crash...He wasn't playing with them
The only thing missing from this video was the hit roy put on marshawn lynch back on 2007 on MNF. Overall wonderful video man😁

Worse back in the 70s. They flat out punched each other lol

The One Hit Wonder
I believe the hit on Emmitt Smith at 2:00 was so hard it broke Emmitt’s shoulder blade. Even though Roy hit him in the front.

I just don’t understand why as the game evolved, why they didn’t explore Roy as a linebacker? He had the body and the strength to make that type of transition.
I have his cowboys jersey
I have one, too. I purchased it at the old Texas stadium.
Playing with D.woodson probably helped.
