Roy Williams career highlights with Cowboys. I do not own any of the audio or footage shown in this video. #DallasCowboys #NFL #NFLHighlights #RoyWilliams
People only remember the end of his career which is sad. I heard Darren Woodson say that Roy was the best defensive player he's ever seen. The league had to change the rules in the middle of his career to stop him.
@@llmfdoomf5127 And. When he was playing it was legal. It doesn't take away from how good he was in his prime. As a matter of fact ball carriers would of rathered been horse collared than get hit by him coming down hill. There's videos of receivers and tightends literally scared to go over the middle because of Roy's presence.
An underrated Cowboy. One that never does get any love when talking about former Cowboy players. A hard hitter. He could light you up and make you like it.
could of been a all pro for years and years... Then teams thru at him deep and he got exposed. I thought he would be the first player to kill someone on the field. Truly one of the most vivicious hitters that ive ever seen.
The problem was the rule changes and so coaching staffs trying to turn safeties into what they are today. Trying to make him what he is not, a modern day covering down field type safety. Roy had great coverage on tight ends, slots etc, in fact was probably the best at it. His only job when covering deep was just to help the corner, and he was a monster at reading the run and everything in front of him. A playmaker. That type of safety no longer exists, but back then, typically you would want a safety that excels in the things Williams excelled in. Unfortunately the ideal football safety is no longer allowed in the nfl. Which is why you have qbs like dak Prescott for instance, who passes tons of simple passes far in front of safeties. You couldn't make a career on those passes back then like you can today.
@@thecensoredmuscle563 yeah it’s like what’s happening to Jamal adams and Landon collins a bit. A coverage guy like Micah Hyde is way more valuable in the modern game.
Actually he didn't get exposed. In interviews over the years S Keith Davis has admitted that those plays that Roy was blamed for was actually his fault. He was the one that got burned. Both times Roy only tried to come help and they wouldn't have happened if he didn't allow the redskins to fool him and left his Moss open. Roy saw Davis screwed up and left his zone to help but he got there a little too late. In the Roy Williams documentary, Davis explains how Roy took the blame for Davis failure to read the play properly.
@Shawn Carter facts. He was such a team player that he took the blame for him and in the interview he still didn't want to say who's fault it really was.

I recall a game against the Lions where Roy came on a blitz. The RB picked him up, but I just remember the RB went flying backwards because Williams hit him so hard.
@@Supermanfan99 apologies, I was being a smart ass. I have never ever seen a soul flat out throttle him in the open field or in traffic and it be on a highlight reel, Barry was that damn good.

@@jeebs9 its not just the horse collar rule, its the hitting rules. Most of his plays are not allowed in the NFL anymore, the position he played no longer exists. Only in name only.
@Will Kelly I've heard Woodson say that Roy was the best/most impactful defensive player hes ever seen. If the nfl didn't change the rules to flag football in the middle of his career he would be in Canton already.
Roy and Sean T. were blasting everyone in the mid 2000s to the point where they had no choice but to change some rules lmfaoo people forget how vicious Roy used to be in his heyday
I remember when Roy Williams was drafted the biggest concern was how long he would play football. He wasn't shy about the fact he didnt see NFL career as something he wanted to do long term. His talent was so good teams over-looked that on draft night. Overall, I found Roy Williams career disappointing. His early NFL success has expectations high but I never felt he fully fulfilled those expectations.
Sean Taylor was a hard hitter, but Roy Williams made big tight ends and big runningbacks who lowered their shoulder head on with him go flying backwards consistently. Taylor was not able to do that, but if you were a wide receiver, Taylor would lay the wood.
Today, Roy Williams would be that new age linebacker. I remember Parcells mention the Williams was a biscuit shy of a linebacker. Maybe towards the end of his career, they should have tried him at LB. Although, I think they were still running a 3-4 then, so IDK how that would work.
Apparently Bill Parcells recommended Roy gain some weight to switch to LB when he started getting beat in coverage but he declined. Think with some hard work he could have picked up the switch and prolonged his career. Had a knack for homing in and blasting the ball carrier.
for the first 2-3 years he could run, hit, cover, tackle anyone. I remember an interview saying he found Jesus, and how he was tired of hurting himself and others. I respect that. He was my favorite player for a few years and was one of the last jerseys I asked for Christmas. During his last few years it felt like he didn't take care of his body as much as I would've liked to see and it was painful watching him play at a level lower than I remembered.
Thank you for doing these videos! I have never came in contact with ANYONE who has the knowledge of good football and Dallas Cowboys history. It would be so refreshing to actually talk to you though. Whare do you get all this footage?
Good ol #31. They ended his career keeping him out of position. Dallas should have made it a priority to get true FS after Woody retired so Roy could go back to his natural position of SS. Him and Barry Church would have been the best duo in the league.

I mean, damn...but Williams did beat out another safety in the vote totals, a pretty good rookie safety named Ed Reed...
Wilcox was the closest thing we had to Roy only when it came to toughness. Roy had a lot more stats. Man... if Roy wasnt so susceptible to coverage he wouldve been all time.
I'm surprised they didn't show him breaking Emmitt's shoulder after Emmitt made the comment that when he was in Dallas he was a diamond among garbage. Roy said he'd show him and he did.
In a generation of hard hitters the likes of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Brian Dawkins, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Brian Urlacher, and Sean Taylor....Roy Williams was the nastiest. Its sad his spiral at the end has left him forgotten to all but the hard cores.
Good player that just fell off quickly... some people say it was penalties, or not having Darren Woodson anymore, or changing defensive scheme... but he started out with such a flash and then fell off🤷🏻♂️ , he would take some horrible angles too. Always wanted him to move to outside linebacker towards the end of his career.. add a little weight.
I think he only had Woodson for 2 years. He made 5 pro bowls and was considered the best safety in the NFL for 5 years in a row. Really he should have made the pro bowl and gotten 1st team all pro his rookie year also, I mean 99 tackles, 5 ints, 2 defensive tds, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, and 4 tackle for losses.
