      I think people living in similar environments have similar ideas. The difference between myths is from differences in cultures. So, the reason there are vastly different stories, supernatural beings, and moral opinions on The same Myth subjects.
      Is because, Europe, India, Africa, Australia, Pacific, Middle East, North and South America have a vast number of cultural groups and languages. But people tend to have similar questions about life but different life circumstances, different values, and different levels of possible scientific proof for beliefs. Plus, cultures of people in contact with each other share beliefs BUT when people of the same culture split up each groups form different beliefs forming new cultures.

    In 2013 I died. I was clinically dead (code black, no respiration or pulse) for 5 minutes. Thanks to an EMT who performed CPR on me despite the fact that I was a corpse, I'm here. I was in a coma for 2 weeks afterward. People always ask me if I saw the light or some other Jesusy nonsense. I was dead. I didnt see anything. I remember waking my wife up and telling her I thought I was about to die and the next thing I remember is waking up in intensive care. The only way I knew that something terrible had happened (other than waking up in ICU) was that I went to bed clean shaven and woke up with a beard. To this day I still have the occasional existential moment where I wonder if I'm actually alive. Maybe I'm still in a coma. Or, more likely since Trump is "president", I'm actually dead and I'm in hell... which means you are all in hell with me.

    I took a class in my Psychology undergrad program called "Fantasy vs. Reality" where we discussed and looked at research around how society and culture influence our understanding of mental illness. Basically, it is understood in the field that society and culture are what determine what is real or fantasy and therefore mental illness is subject to culture and dominant belief systems in that particular society.
    My point is that some of these so called "myths" might be accepted as truth by the majority of a particular culture. If you are wanting to be sensitive to different societal beliefs, then you should probably not criticize them by calling them "batshit crazy." It is likely that you have a belief in your culture that another group of people would consider absurd. So unless you are making the claim that your belief system and culture is superior to others, you may want to change your tone of voice and word choice to be more respectful even if you disagree.

Aside from the fact that everyone tends to see things through their own cultural lens (hard not to - we're sat in our culture), he is, like all true believers, certain that he is right and everyone else is therefore wrong. Only in this case, he believes in nothing.
      I use 'true believer' to mean level of faith, in this case (near?) total. Some true believers are able to discuss other people's beliefs politely, but on this occasion Simon decided not to. It's a little disappointing, honestly.

      History says differently on the second point. Books on many sciences are dated. Heck, when i was born they thought dinosaurs were slow moving lizards who were commonly depicted as dragging their tails around. Science or our understanding of it, changes constantly.

      Not really, it is the reverse: science is our understanding of the world, and thus it will constantly change because our understanding is imperfect. Religion caters to our deep cravings, fantasies, fears & emotions. So, it will largely remain unchanged.

    • @Ruby321123
      @Ruby321123 4 года назад +1

      I also disagree. While the details & specefics of religion vary greatly, most do share a variety of common themes & ideas; and while science is in theory based on observations of the natural world and calculations thereof, it has had a unique evolution giving rise to many ideas which in their own time seemed believable, yet now seem bizarre.
      I believe, in such a scenario, that both would appear recognisable to the people of today, yet both would also contain ideas we today would find strange - and it goes without saying that those ideas may or may not be correct.
      Also, this hypothetical has overlooked one of the most massively important aspects of religion & folklore - which in the absence of books, would become an important aspect of science, too, at least for a while: oral tradition. Many stories and ideas survive centuries or even millennia by word of mouth alone - as to their integrity after so many re-tellings, that appears to vary by culture, as some insist on word-for-word memorisation whilst others allow or even encourage embellishment.

    Honestly, that flood myths are common all over the world might have something to do with the fact that most ancient (and modern) cities tend to be close to the sea or a river. So flooding was a problem now and then. Figuring that it must mean there was a world wide flood because of that seems a bit sketchy to me.

    • @goodiesohhi
      @goodiesohhi 3 года назад +2

      It just means people lived in areas that were flooded. If the region you lived in was flooded, to an ancient persons with no idea how large the planet is, that may as well have bee their entire world.

    • @loke6664
      @loke6664 3 года назад +1

      @@goodiesohhi Certainly, and even if they didn't, when the story becomes and oral tradition it tends to get rather exaggerated.
      Even today, most larger cities are placed so a rather low increase in sea level would flood them and that makes them in danger of flooding.
      So just because most cultures have flood myths, I think it is a huge mistake to believe it is based on a single world wide event. Such event would leave traces in the archaeological record and it have not.

    The "Great Flood" is easy to explain. It rains almost everywhere at one time or another. Places where it never rains tend to be devoid of inhabitants. So, the bulk of humanity has always lived in places where it rains, hardly a brilliant observation. Sometimes it rains extraordinarily much in some localities, resulting in flooding. People did not get around as much in these old day as they do now, so people tended to see their locality as the "Whole World". Each such locality had, over the centuries, several large floods, which merged by retelling into the local "Great Flood". Of course, the "Great Flood" of Mesopotamia which spawned the story of Noah was different from various "Great Floods" of many other places such as Europe, China, Meso-America, and so forth.. Crackpots, whose knowledge of history could be printed onto a postage stamp, took the merging process one step further, identifying all of the various "Great Floods" of the various localities at various times (each itself the merger of several events) into a "World-Wide Great Flood". So here we are, with numerous crackpot books discussing the "World-Wide Great Flood".

    The Miracle of the Sun in Fátima was more prominently an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the "beautiful young woman". The angelic visitation connected to Fátima was actually the year before in 1916, and was not made public until later on. The angelic being, identified as the "Angel of Portugal" or "Angel of Peace", taught the three children prayers, and gave them Holy Communion as spiritual preparation for the miracles of the following year.

    The Thunderbird myth is present in some form in the culture of nearly every Native American tribe in north, central, and South America... and might be the story of Christ as translated into myth form from information gleaned form Polynesian, African, and Viking trade

    • @nevyen149
      @nevyen149 4 года назад +2

      Doubt the Thunderbird myth is related to anything Judeo-Christian, and I'm betting isn't as widespread as you make it out to be. If you look up the mythology, it only shows up in a few North American tribes, none that I can see in Central America, and none of which I'm familiar with in South America. There is no known Pre-Columbian New World contact with any African cultures, and Christianity didn't make it to Polynesia until after Europeans had visited North, Central and South America, and after the Polynesian contact with the New World had ceased. There is no evidence the Vikings had any trade with the North American natives, and none of the tribes with a Thunderbird myth are (necessarily) situated near the known Viking settlement area.

    Could the flood have been a racial memory of the end of the ice age? After the ice age a lot of land was lost like the land bridge in North America or Doggerland between France and Britain. Most of the early sites we have access to during the ice age were sparsely populated . I wonder what the lands flooded were like?

    • @rhov-anion
      @rhov-anion 4 года назад

      There's tons of geological and archeological evidence that this is precisely the case. I recall in anthropology class that there is one Native American flood myth with actual evidence, because when the flood happened (in this case, we know it was the waters from the melting glaciers suddenly bursting and sweeping through the area) the survivor and his family built a home on a location, which was spared and everything around it carved away. The family escaped the home, and signs of it still exist, in an area that a normal rock climber cannot access. You would have to be dropped down by helicopter, due to the way the water etched out the surrounding softer soil. It wasn't until the 20th century that an archeology team was able to get to the site. They found that it was indeed the home of a family, like in the myth, and pottery fragments had a similar style to the modern day tribe's artistic styles, linking that tribe's flood myth to a real family who survived what geologists already knew was a massive flooding.
      I wish I could remember the tribe or even which area of North America this happened in, but I learned about this 15 years ago. The details are fuzzy. It just stuck with me as proof that "flood myths" are based on real floods that happened over the course of a few hundred years.
