And that is so true, there is a lot of it. There are so many bloody forms of this because there are so many people who want to stand up and fight for something, or express themselves in a way that can benefit people on a larger scale. Who cares if there's a lot of it, it just means there is more people willing to fight for something, and this world needs as many of those people as it can get.

People sit back and say Rise Against is not a punk rock band. Yes they are. Punk is not a sound, its a mindset, an attitude, a love for humanity, seeing past the lies of the world and opening up. Rise Against is definitely a punk rock band. Yes their sound may be more the likes of Alternative rock which is fine. The power is in the message and this band has to be one of the best bands around anymore. They write real music that addresses real issues and that's what makes them great. :)
Found out about these from hearing their song Satelitte (which is one of my favorite songs from them) on my local radio station. I am mainly a heavy metal guy but thise group puts out some good tunes... And i grew up on Metallica, Slayer, and Pantera.....
Another point I would like to make is that people tend to say their sell-outs. How? The entire Endgame album deals with issues they would definitely not be talking about if they sold out. Do think a major mainstream band is going to be writing songs that are against homophobia? Do you think a mainstream band is going to be talking about any of the issues that are adressed in this album? Rise Against is a real band that actually stands for something. They are one of the best bands around.
Punk was a counterculture moviment, not only the music, there were a whole ideology behind it, and that made punk what it was, just like hippe back in the 60', not the screams, or the random words. It was an ideal, to break from a system that only used them. See Sex Pistol for an example, they didn't scream randomly, and they are one of the most punk bands i know.
Well sure, they don't use a lot of characteristics that have defined punk up until this point. But, they do have a point to what they sing about if you look deeper into their songs. They call for social change more effectively and creatively than a ton of punk bands. They use a different approach that's attacking problems from a different angle.

Here is why this argument is stupid: Alternative rock is a genre used to describe non-mainstream bands (of all types, including Punk) who receive mainstream attention, and in fact was actually stemmed from Punk Rock roots when Punk started to become popular as a way to categorize that type of music. Punk Rock is a style and certain mindset basically against conformity. So both sides are right, RA is both.
Why are some of you so obsessed with defining the genre of music that any band is playing? If you like the music and you find their lyrics awesome, why is it even important? The genres mix so much nowadays and you can find traces of so many in just one song... Besides, the point of music is to express your thoughts, feelings...yourself even in a way that you, as an artist, like. Try to just enjoy it and don't listen to it just because you think a certain genre is cool.
I'm not a punk elitist or anything, nor do i claim to know the entire history of punk, but it was around well before Nirvana :P bands like Black Flag, Bad Religion, The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, Descendants, Sex Pistols..idk I'm not an expert, I just named a few off the top of my head.
