Thank you so much man! Even after 12 years of posting this video is still relevant. Thank you for your hardwork. And my heartfelt thanks to whoever have developed testdisk software. I got back the stuffs I lost in an unfortunate event. May God bless both of you ❤️

Lifesaver!! I had to do a deep scan because I aborted a partition resize. After scanning about 2% testdisk found the original partition and restored the partition table. Note to self: never abort a partition resize. ;)

I almost never comment on videos, but I have to for this one:
Thank you so much! Was seconds away from reinstalling OSX when I came across your video, the instructions are almost identical for Mac, and I now have all the files I was sure I had lost.

Thank you my friend, let me tell you, you have just saved my life! I accidentally deleted my Windows partition which contained some VERY important files and photos that I hadn't had time to backup yet, and following your excellent instructions I managed to recover the partition absolutely intact. The moral of this story I suppose is, back up back up back up! Thank you very much.

This worked after I mistakenly wiped a Windows 7 install from my second hard drive (sdb/sdb1)..during a Windows 7 install from boot disk. Yeah..OOOPS!
Since My sda drive was running Ubuntu Studio 18.10 and i immediately rebooted back into the Ubuntu environment,
installed testdisk using 'sudo apt-get install testdisk' command at a terminal.
Then ran gparted as su launching 'command sudo gparted' from same console.
For some reason, Ubuntu Studio seems to disallow me any use of gparted unless i do this.
Then followed your steps from there. Results?
FULL RECOVERY. THANK YOU!!! Saved a very careless mistake on my part about 175GB of data.
10 years after your initial post, its on point my dude. Thank you!!!

I loaned a WD 1TB My Book to a friend and it came back w/o being able to access the files - over 350GB of music and 200GB of photos! The error stated that "the disk was not formatted do you want to format now?" I chose "No" and used TestDisk (on Win XP) to try to find the partition. It found the right one in a backup sector (the primary sector was bad) and rewrote it. Works great now, all files are accessible. Thanks! You might want to tell people where to download TestDisk.

I accidentally wiped my dual boot setup trying to put Ubuntu 14.04 over 12.04, and although most of it is stuff that doesn't matter, there is some importantish data, and I feel like I complete idiot. I haven't finished trying the steps here, but THE MUSIC, oh, god, I could have run over a small child and still felt good about myself, listening to the happy music, listening to a kind gentle understanding voice.

Hi, very good video. I'm using Linux Mint and I deleted accidently the unique hard disk partition. Next time I turned on the cumputer I had no access to the O.S. (underline blinking at the corner of the screen) so I boot from a Linux Live CD installation and follow this instructions. After that I rebooted it and still no O.S. found in hard drive so here I am in the Live CD again. The partition e showed as ntfs in g-parted (should it be ext?) but still can't find my stuff.

An OK tutorial if you have the simple, easy, problem of a simple freshly deleted partition. What about when you have a more complex situation such as when Linux has grabbed two NTFS partitions and converted them to Linux partitions - how do you recover from that? All the data is still there (I can see it with PhotoRec) but I want the partitions back so as to avoid a horrendus recovery job.

    • @TelecasterLPGTop
      @TelecasterLPGTop 9 лет назад

The secret is to not perform any actions on the lost partition such as create a new partition etc. I switched the HDD that was affected OFF as soon as I had realised that I had screwed up and TestDisk worked perfectly. Your situation sounds more complex. Good luck.

My disk had three partitions on it that was setup by Windows 7 as a boot drive. The first part was the boot part, the 2nd I thought was the main part, and the 3rd part I thought was the recovery part. I recovered the 2nd part and it turns out it was the wrong one. I tried to recover the 3rd part with no luck. Any suggestions?

Go to Ubuntu Software Center and search for Synaptic. Install it. Once it's done and you open it, click first on Reload (it's a must). After this, search for "testdisk" and when you find it, click on Mark to install, then Apply. It'll install Test Disk.

The ubuntu has taken up only 3GB on my 250GB HDD. So is it anyway possible to recover the data using this method? Cause it is not just partition delete, but an overwrite.
