I used that exact tool to pull this out. I used that demo screwdriver a lot its really handy. Can even get some channel locks on it if its really jammed
Thanks for the vid. I was havinga problem with the shower going cold, and it was the spool valve sticking. Side Note: To anyone doing this you may need to (should) replace the O rings.
I thought I finally fixed my problem with no cold water after removing and cleaning (boiled in vinegar) the balance spool and noting it rattled completely freely. But I'm still not getting cold (yes I reversed 180 degree the cartridge also, which is new). When I open the cold water screw, I do get water flowing into the balancing spool's housing, so it's the spool or after the spool. When I shine a light into the cartridge housing, the light does not shine through to the spool housing, or vice versa. Could the passage between the cartridge and spool housing (cylinders) be clogged? I bent up some bore brushes to reach into the passage, but got no apparent effect.
I believe you need to turn the hot and cold screws by 90°. You can confirm the shuts off any water flow by turning on the middle main control valve and making sure all water is shut off at this point. I think the screw slot might be up and down in the off position.
Milwaukee makes a new demolition screwdriver that is super wide at the tip but not excessively long. Loved the heat gun approach to get it going

Could you send a link for that screwdriver?
Thanks for the vid.

Helpful. Struggling with getting the balancing spool. I’ll try the heat gun method.
be carefully not to apply too much heat otherwise the o-rings might shrink in the hot/cold cartridge and dripping could occur

I think if you try a brand new spool you'll probably be fine. Perhaps one of the o-rings is getting smashed and not allowing the water to pass through
I cleaned mine in vinager. Seems to work for now !!
To turn the hot and cold water off, do you turn the screw to the vertical position?
