It’s time to get Mat’s in-depth review of the new Genesis GV70!
What’s Genesis? In much the same way that Lexus is a premium, up-market version of Toyota, Genesis is a premium, up-market offering from Hyundai.
The latest car from this relatively new brand is this GV70 SUV. It’s an alternative to the likes of the many German SUVs you’ll see (almost without fail) on your morning commute or school run, including the Audi Q54, the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLC.
You won’t mistake the GV70 for any of those cars, though. It looks completely different from every angle thanks to plenty of Genesis’ signature design details including stacked two-piece headlights and tail lights, a broad, angular front grille and a steeply raked window pillar at the side.
Things get even more eye-catching inside. Genesis has really pushed the boat out for the GV70’s interior and you’ll find loads of posh-looking trims and plenty of plush materials.
It’s just a shame that unlike in most premium SUVs, you still need a cable to connect your phone to the otherwise decent infotainment system.
Another area where the GV70 differs from its alternatives is when you come to pick the engine you want. Unusually, you can choose from petrol, diesel AND electric options. The last of which Genesis claims will return up to 282 miles according to the combined WLTP test.
So, how does this new Genesis SUV stack up against better-known and much-loved alternatives from BMW, Audi and Mercedes? Watch this review to find out…

The thing you can’t see is how deep the engineering goes. It’s really easy to hide value engineering out of sight and have everything you see and touch high quality. I’m not saying that’s happened here, but you’d have to see the total bill of materials and engineering specs to confirm what you are saying. Deep, deep engineering, may only be apparent after 10+ years…..

@@final_mile_music9713 there is no "deep engineering" behind Volkswagen slapping an Audi badge on a Golf and calling it a Q3 and charging twice the price. (Yes these details aren't exactly true and I'm oversimplifying, but it's the basic gist)
"Deep engineering" is a terrible excuse for premium manufacturers simply knowing the fact that they can produce a piece of crap, charge a fortune for it, and people will still flock to it for no reason other than the badge.

While I do love my German SUVs, something about the GV70 just does it right. Here in the US, we get a 3.5 liter V6 model with 375 horsepower which is enough to have a little fun with. It may not be as agile and performance-oriented as its German rivals, but it does so well in other areas. Not to mention that the GV70 along with every other Genesis model looks stunning. Simply put, the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis groups have come a long way.

My Audi does that everytime when wet), Gear vs Screen Selection Knobs have never bothered me (unless you are a lazy or sleeping driver, which in case you shouldn't even be driving). There I vented :P The reason I comment is cos I have had the BMW X3M for 2 yrs and about 3 months ago switched to GV70 and GV70 gives soooo much more not just in-terms of value for money and benefits of powertrain warranty, just the driving experience on normal roads from point a to point b has been simply amazing on the Genesis! The only place I miss my BMW is on interstates/highways when you wanna zoom! (And that is where my Audi S5 comes - I noticed the same one you were taking over when you were driving). Sorry Matt but this one is a ding for you. I live in Vancouver, Canada and just had the GV70 w/ 3.5TT overnight and totally fell in luv with it.
Its a Luxury CrossOver that has plenty of power. It won't outperform the more sportier Benz GLC 63S AMG power & torque nor the X3 M 40i, or the Macan Turbo but the LUXURY (quieter & smoother ride) and the VALUE Proposition will have you thinking a few times over if the German options are really worth it for the extra cost. GV70 has the edge in my books b/c of the Ext & Int styling PLUS high level of materials used in the Int as top notch. I like to invest my money whenever possible and change out my daily every 5-10 yrs.
This GV 70 has many Luxury features, new updated interior, that ext styling and enough power (less than 5 seconds 0-60) to have tons of fun with. Its exceptionally quiet in the cabin and in Comfort mode it really is a smooth ride.
If ur comparing the GV70 to the Germans you will be blown away with all the luxury standard features (Drivers side massaging seats, front heated & cooled seats, that massive center screen, the move forward & back option on the key fob, massive sunroof & moon roof, AWESOME sound system, all the safety features, etc...) It really does offer an AWESOME VALUE vs the Germans. PLUS the scheduled maintenance for 5 yrs is INCLUDED!!!
The price in Canada for a full load with the interior CF trim, 360 camera, quilted leather, etc is $75,500 including F&PDI. Just pay taxes and doc fee.
    I'm VERY Very impressed:-)
Now, do I choose the electrified version or just get the gas powered one now?
I like the electrified version b/c it has the sunroof where as the GV60 does not.
    Fantastic VALUE options either way.
    Cheers from Vancouver.

Example I can think of is driving the 2018 BMW 540i with its adaptive suspension. In comfort, it absolutely took away those minor imperfections and THAT to me is extremely important in a luxury vehicle. It would be the difference between going with one brand over the other as I drive on highway quite a lot and having a smooth supple ride is #1 importance. Thanks for going into such detail about ride quality as most reviewers do not talk about these little but IMPORTANT details.

    Matt,
We have now had this car for five months and here are some findings: initially the gas mileage was mediocre but now on road trips over an hour the darn thing is getting 30 mpg (US). Around town driving remains around 22 - not stellar but as expected. Premium gas is “recommended” but I pass on that expensive button at the pump. My one gripe and not really fair as I did buy the car is back seat comfort (legroom) is definitely compromised. Not a deal breaker but suggest potential buyers take notice. Gabbing the rotary dial for the infotainment system instead of gear selector becomes a complete non-issue after a couple of weeks. Ideally the two dials would be reversed but one quickly adapts. Finally, we have had zero issues with the dealer as they seem to have been well trained to differentiate between their Genesis and Hyundai customers.
All in all, very well pleased with the vehicle. Does everything I ask of it very, very well.

The exterior design at the rear to me just screams 1st gen Macan, and they’ve even pinched the tailgate-opening method with the wiper. Apart from that, I quite like it. The interior in particular is ace 👌

Do you reset the mpg when you test them? I reckon the owners could definitely rag them so it’s not as accurate haha
