  • Virginia Woolf was born in South Kensington, London. She was born into a prominent family that supported her academic endeavours, studying the Victorian novelists at a young age. Woolf published her first novel, The Voyage Out, in 1915. Apart from her novels she wrote extensive essays on many subjects and became one of the central figures in the women’s rights movements decades after her passing, in 1941. Virginia Woolf's works have been translated in over fifty languages.

I suppose that fits with what she says about how we should read. I am happy to be her accomplice even when it takes a bit of effort. I am still working my way through her works mind you. Great introduction as always!
    I want to get to some of Woolf’s fiction, but definitely from an enjoyment of reading perspective and not from an analytical perspective 😅

      Hahaha, most definitely! And even if one doesn't enjoy her particular style, the poetic prose are worth reading alone. 😊😊

    So informative man, well done! I've read some exerpts and poetry, but if I was going to just dive into a full book, where would I start?

      Oh! Great question! Though The Waves seems to be a lot of people's favorite, it is very experimental. Whereas a short novel like To The Lighthouse still has her experimental style and stream of consciousness, it is not as heavy and easier to get into for someone that is not as familiar with her work. In my opinion, To the Lighthouse is a perfect place to start. 😊

    I consistently forget that Mrs. Dalloway was Virginia Woolf.
    Is the embracing of Woolf's work in academia relatively new, or has it been a thing for a while and my schools merely behind the times?

      During my nine years of university, I don't think I went a year without reading something of hers. Haha. But maybe it is a location thing. 😅

    Awesome intro to Virginia Woolf! Kinda random, Alex just had a student write a paper on the movie The Hours and they didn't know Virginia Woolf was a real person 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 these kids these days haha. I'm going to listen to that interview! Great video! 🤗

    I am also an alumna of KCL - one of the campus buildings is named after her. But, even so, I’ve never read any Virginia Woolf! 🙈I’ve avoided her work because of her famous stream of consciousness style - a structure of writing that I have never really enjoyed! But is that all of her work or just specific novels? Is there a particular work you would recommend for me to try?

    • @attention5638
      @attention5638  2 года назад +1

      Sorry for such a late reply, I have fallen behind! But yes! Her novel Orlando is less of the stream of consciousness. It can still be complicated here and there, but most people agree it is her most accessible work. 😊

    Having only read one of her books and absolutely hating it, I read Virginia Woolf
    by Hermione Lee to see if I would at least like the author. That would be no. But Lee did a great job writing about Woolf. I try to give an author three tries, so I have two more books to read by Woolf. We'll see if my opinion changes about her writing. However, having read the biography, I have found out most of her writing wasn't creative, so much as just writing about her friends. 🤔

      You are for sure not alone in not liking her work. It really is a specific taste. And that is actually true--I never really thought about that--she did write a lot about the people she knew. 🤔
