Talking/Talking About Philosophy

  • The main discussion begins around 4:30
The first four minutes is explaining why I am talking about this in the first place, which, understandably, will not be of interest to most here.
In this video, I discuss the difference between speaking about philosophy and speaking philosophy. We look at the history of ideas, history of philosophy, and philosophy of history within the context that is typical on this platform.

But what about historical philosophy and philosophical history? I'm just kidding. I wish we all had more time to film the videos we have planned out, even the ones listed out as hopeful ideas. Is there really any harm in accidentally "misleading" people if it produces thought and discussion? :)

    • @attention5638
      @attention5638  Год назад +1

I was actually just thinking this the other day, and it is an incredibly important point. If it generates discussion, it does ultimately shed further light on the subject. I approached the whole subject as though one doesn't look further, which I guess my pessimistic view got in the way. I will have to mention this in another video--thank you for pointing that out!

I usually maintain that if people want to know why I think a certain way in a video, they have to watch the one immediately proceeding it, and the one before that, and the one before that...

Thank you so much! And yes, the struggle is very real. More so in the book community as the amount of work outside the platform takes a lot of time. It is best to take one's time and not get too stressed about it. So I am told haha😅

I love your take on “philosophy”, and the more I was listening to this, the more I thought you would have a GRAND time with “The master and his emissary”, because it has a ton of philosophy for people who have studied it.
p.s. it especially touches on the limits of philosophical activity, often limited to our left brain, that’s why I found it fascinating

“Tree-ing” is my new favorite word-that captures the problem of “talking philosophy” so well. It’s why I have laptops of documents (heh, heh...). I laughed very hard at the “School of Life” jokes and the notion that society has developed efficient ways to shrink attention spans like some kind of science experiment…I also agree that fiction has a way of “binding” a philosophical discussion in interesting ways. Anyway, just wanted to let you know I’m going to try to use the word “tree-ing” in every conversation I can from now on. Pae for President.

Haha, it is a good word! When I start putting out all these series, I am just going to have to jump in and not worry about explaining every detail and the whole history. But! I can still be very detailed on where I got everything that will be discussed. So that is alright haha

@@attention5638 Indeed my friend, and I myself just imagine myself as trying to describe the top of a glacier. No, the top of the glacier isn't the whole of it, but it's also part of the whole. What is described is incomplete, yes but it is not misdirection. All models are wrong, but some can be useful, and all I've ever found on your channel are good, beautiful, and true models.

“Why?”Hahaha! Good sir, I am very glad to see a video like this! I would say that it’s an important introduction on the depths of philosophy (I say this knowing it barely hits anything, but you know what I mean). To those who are considering diving into philosophy, I recommend it and also don’t 😅 In the past year have lost an incredible amount of sleep, and I feel like I’m right where I started (even though that is not technically true, but it always feels like it). It is really great to be able to discuss ideas with others like on The Net, but the studying is often done alone. It is also nice to be able to watch a ten minute video on someone trying to explain what Heidegger means when he says “Be there” and say to myself “oh that’s bs” so I have certainly found good and bad in the last year. I have been humbled more times than I can count, but the journey is the fun part of it all! There are lots of ways that studying has helped me in my life. Though I cannot spend 20 hours a day working on it, the few hours I do get is helpful. 😊
As for fiction, i agree. I always think that is easier to bring philosophical elements about, or ways that fiction can relate to specifics in life, but in a very intrinsic way. It is by no means saying, here’s a concept and that’s totally what Heidegger meant. But I love exploring fiction.
As always, take care (and take vitamin D 😂) Looking forward to the new content! 😊😊
One last thing. I see what you are saying and yes I agree, but someone did just request me to write a response to Schopenhauer’s “on women” essay today sooooooo kind of really tempted to do that. 😂😂

This whole video was just the extra parts I cut out before getting into Descartes method haha which is why he comes up as the example through all of this 😅 I wasn't intending to put this out until I realized it may be a good introduction. Now I have no choice but to continue goin in this direction Haha. And the few hours you get are worth gold! They all add up, and things open more and more with every week that passes!
And yes! I saw you had a copy of "On the Suffering of the World" which is excerpts taken from Will and Representation. I am going to have to read those sections again, but it will be a good excuse to go back to Schopenhauer. 😎

I don't know whether Heidegger was an existentialist or not and don't really care, but he did suggest we visit graveyards from time to time to be aware of our own mortality. As to whether we have a soul or not, I am sitting on the agnostic fence. Good to see you putting something out.

Trees are dangerous...they branch way too much, lol. And this is the problem (or perhaps the good thing) about philosophy. Nothing stands alone and everything is complex and connected. Layers upon layers upon layers. It's why I struggle with philosophy even if I do enjoy it when I read it. It is just a lot because of all those layers, and how philosophers build on other philosophers.
